  • In Focus: The Breakfast celebrate the 80’s during Halloween return to Albany

    Billed as a ‘Fonghoulish Freakout at The Hollow,’ The Breakfast reunited for a rare show in their 20th anniversary year to celebrate Halloween with a variety of 80’s songs in tow. If you ever wanted to hear The Breakfast play “Don’t You Forget About Me” from The Breakfast Club, then you were in for a treat. “Let’s Dance,” “White Wedding” and Toto’s “Africa” were standouts among fan favorites, including originals “Hard Luck Harry” and “Honey Butter,” as well as jams on “Thriller” and “Axel F.”

    An encore of “Synergy” had Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” lyrics modified slightly as Tim Palmiere sang ‘You Can Call Me Albany,‘ to the delight of the crowd.

    Opening the night was Albany’s Wurliday, with frontman Justin Henricks dressed as John Lennon c. 1974, and aptly played “Come Together” as part of the band’s musical costume.

    The Breakfast is in Colorado this weekend for two shows at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple, then play in late November in New Hampshire and Connecticut.

  • Ripe Rolls Down onto Pearl Street Pub

    Pearl Street Pub in downtown Albany is generally a home to college students, Albany natives, and ‘out of towners’ alike. On Friday, however, the patrons all had something in common. They all shared a love of funk, and they all loved Ripe.

    The night began with a set from the Australian-based group Castlecomer. The quartet got the collective blood flowing just as the packed room began to cut loose. A roar came over the crowd when the headliners later took the stage. Lead singer Robbie Wulfsohn welcomed the band and belted out the beginning to “Pretty Dirty.” “A Little Lighter” followed and the band went into a night-long serenade to the vibrant fans.

    The group is taking their tour south later this month as they head to Hulaween, and then head out to the midwest. They will return to the Northeast with shows in Burlington, VT; Syracuse, NY; Northampton, MA; and Norwalk CT in mid-November.

  • In Focus: Marco Benevento at Cohoes Music Hall

    Marco Benevento threw a party in Cohoes and the audience came prepared to get down and dance. As he always does, the Mad Hatter of the jam scene brings a show full of non stop fun to the Capital Region, and for the first time, at historic Cohoes Music Hall. Energy was in no short supply with bassist Karina Rykman jumping for joy and happily bouncing around the stage throughout the groovy, disco-tinted set.

    Opener Mikaela Davis was equally impressive, playing harp with a full band, and driving the songs home collectively. The pairing of Davis and Benevento is wonderful and one we hope to see more in the future.

  • In Focus: Vulfpeck Funks Up The Garden

    Madison Square Garden was given a heavy dose of uptempo funk on Saturday September 28 as the entire arena was surging with energy as Fearless Flyers and Vulfpeck brought their A-game to a sold out MSG.

    Fearless Flyers, one of Vulfpeck’s many side projects, opened the night. Right out of the gate they came out swinging with heavy bass lines at an incredibly quick pace. All dressed in fighter pilot jumpers, the band was cool and clean as they ripped through each song.

    Vulfpeck came out to a roaring arena, its members being announced one by one. They started the set with their incredibly upbeat “Animal Spirits” and went quickly into “Cory Wong.” After each song, the band moved seamlessly around the stage, changing instruments and showing off their incredible versatility.

    After several songs, Antwaun Stanley joined the band on stage for “1612” which sent the fans into a frenzy, and appeared to be the climax of the night until the band got the crowd singing the chorus to “Back Pocket,” the intensity roared on for the rest of the night.

  • Stone Temple Pilots Leave Upstate Concert Hall Dead and Bloated

    The Stone Temple Pilots have been playing since the late 80’s, and even with a new face on the mic, they don’t seem to be slowing down. Droves of fans packed the wide room of Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park, NY on Tuesday September 10th. The crowd was a sea of late 40’s dads and also a young crowd that will keep these memories alive.

    The quartet came out to a massive roar as they took the stage. They started off strong, working through “Coma,” “Wicked Garden” and “Vasoline.” After a few classics they moved into their newer songs. They did an incredible job weaving through their repertoire, at one point playing two of their most memorable songs sandwiching their newest singles.

  • Griz Reigns as King of Palace Theatre in Albany

    The Palace Theatre in Albany, NY played host to Griz and his Ride the Waves tour on Wednesday, May 8.

    Openers, Dwilly and Yung Bae opened the night and got the adrenaline pumping early. The front rows were packed with a high energy, young crowd and they were soon ready for one of Colorado’s best.

    The lights dimmed, and the bass began to rumble. Griz emerged and began to throw out some incredible lyrics, not usual for past tours. The show continued to bring out surprises including two different singers and two artists on trombone and trumpet.

    The energy, production, and bass lines, were all at full capacity all night. You can catch this energy yourself as Griz continues his tour west and is a headliner at many festivals this summer.

  • Hearing Aide: Kris Yunker ‘Biocoastal Waves’

    Kris Yunker has been around the scene for many years, coming to the Northeast with his good friend and fellow On the Spot Trio bandmate, Danny Mayer. His long road has brought him to Iron Wax Studios, the brain child of soul-man extraordinaire, Alan Evans. Here Kris, Al, and guest singer, Kelly Burr laid down an incredibly funky and upbeat new album, Bicoastal Waves.

    Bicoastal Waves blends surf funk, space rock, and organ jazz to create a unique sound driven by Yunker’s left-handed bass lines. The whaling Hammond organ is the beauty, while Evans’ beats are the soul. This album has a little bit of it all with fat and funky whalers to heavy rock bangers.

  • Photo Gallery: Lettuce at Upstate Concert Hall

    Funk all-stars Lettuce continued their Vibe Up Tour at Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park, NY on Saturday January 12. Snarky Puppy side project, Ghost Note, opened the show with an incredibly energetic set.

    After nearly 27 years together, Lettuce still brings an amazing amount of energy and life to their shows. Playing classics like “Lettsanity,” “Fly,” and “Sounds Like a Party To Me,” they played well into Sunday morning, leaving the fans still craving more. You can catch them down the East Coast and then across the country on this tour. And expect new material later this year.
