  • STS9 Lights Up NYC with Empire State Rooftop Performances

If a band is going to perform on the rooftop of a building to nearly 3,000 people, and that rooftop is in Manhattan, then the show should feel larger than the sprawling metropolis itself. That’s exactly what jamtronica heavyweights Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) did on their two-night run this weekend at new music venue Rooftop at Pier 17 NYC.

An aerial view of Pier 17 during the show, taken by photographer Bill Bernal aboard a FlyNyon helicopter.

The Seaport on South Street has seen an artistic resurgence in recent times, and part of that has been the harbor’s opening of a brand new live entertainment venue in August, Pier 17. The venue sits on the rooftop and commands breathtaking views in all directions. Musicians from Sting and Shaggy to Kings of Leon, as well as Comedians like Amy Schumer have graced this rooftop gem. But even with those big-name acts, the venue featured one of its most anticipated events so far in Sound Tribe’s two night run this weekend.

    Night One

Peaceblaster’s “Metameme” kicked things off in comfortable and colorful style, as Tribe’s lights began to illuminate the New York City night in similarly cosmic, mind-bending style. Night one overall would be a well-appreciated offering of old school-style Tribe, not only in the songs making the setlist but also in the spirited feel the band found again and again through the evening, harkening back some of their best days of live performance over the past many years. Such night one gems as “Ramone and Emigilio” even with its relatively new style, and a first-set “When The Dust Settles Reprise” instilled some spontaneous joy in the die hard percentage of the audience.

Following the opener was “Out of This World,” and its segue into “March” really helped the night launch proper. By the end of this nicely extended two-hit segment, around seven o’clock and barely twenty-five minutes into the show, the playing from the band was reaching top-notch and the energy on the rooftop reaching towards the sky. Over the last many shows this year, Tribe has been working in more drum and bass grooves into their live mix. Whenever the building energy of a particular song seemed to call for it, bassist Alana Rocklin and the twin percussion killers of Zach Velmer and Jeffree Lerner were given the floor to launch into energetic drum and bass sections.

Several times over, the night saw Rocklin meticulously weave her bass lines into the percussive wall that helped to charge some of the great night one jams. On one such drum and bass segment at the end of a fantastic version of “Reemergence,” Velmer saw a furious moment across the drum kit, and made for arguably the most exhilarating segment of night one.

Sound Tribe offered a banger of an encore for this first of two shows, with a “Water Song” that blended perfectly with “Kaya” to wrap it all up. As angelic white beams of light beaconed into the dark New York City sky, a gorgeous, liquefied, stretch of space linked the two songs seamlessly, with David Phipps leading on his pristine synth work.

    Night Two

As the band took the stage again on night two, the iconic Brooklyn Bridge loomed behind, and a colorful sunset transitioned across the sky. The mood was incredible. Set one, which began with “Menacer”, felt like a jam filled donut, with the band seamlessly weaving new and old songs together. The high energy and sprinkled rap samples got the crowd going.

“Menacer” segued into Peaceblaster’s “Shock Doctrine,” and the heavy, dark undertones and electric riffs from guitarist Hunter Brown set the tone for the night. “A03,” a new, airy tune, came next, and was an exciting one for the crowd to hear, because STS9 had debuted this song at their Red Rocks Run only three weeks ago in Colorado.

“A03” segued into several classic Tribe tunes sandwiched together, starting with “Frequences 3.” This was not an ordinary Frequencies rendition, as the high energy Frequencies 3 was played first. The band smoothly moved into another older favorite, “Squares and Cubes.” The colorful light rig above the stage was dominated by illuminated squares and cubes, perfectly complimenting this song. Without stopping, the band continued into the mellower dance tune “Frequencies 2,” and eventually found their way back into “Squares and Cubes.” The band created a reverse “Frequences” “Scubes” sandwich, and the crowd was energized to a maximum level.

Next up was “ABCees,” another older STS9 song mixing dark undertones and reggae samples, and included another drum and bass section. “Strange Games,” was next, and utilized both Outkast lyrics and melodies from their own song “Get Loud.” The band closed the first set by transitioning into “When The Dust Settles,” which included lyrics from “Games”.

After a short break, the band returned with another newer song “Spending Time,” which they debuted at their recent New Years show. This segued into Peaceblaster’s “Beyond Right Now,” and also included a crowd-pleasing drum and bass section.  The quintessential “Moonsocket” followed, and has evolved significantly since the Interplanetary Escape Vehicle release in 1998. “Moonsocket” included a longer jam that did not disappoint. The band changed gears with three new songs, “Dragon City,” “New Dawn, New Day”, and “Seed.” “Seed” segued into the fan favorite “Rent,” teasing “When the Dust Settles.”

STS9 ended their two-night run at Pier 17 on a high note, before returning to play one more song before the 10 pm curfew. They sent their fans home happy with an energetic version of yet another classic offering, “Be Nice.”

  • NYC Brazilian/American Alt-Rock Band, Added Color Release New EP ‘Mr. Industry’

Brooklyn-based Brazilian/American rock band Added Color have released a their second EP Mr. Industry, featuring a unique blend of funk-infused alternative rock. The five-track release pulls on their Brazilian roots with pulsating energy and blend together a myriad of sounds, genres and inspiration into the album.

Based in Brooklyn, Dan (drums/vocals) and Kiko Freiberg (guitar/vocals), are brothers hailing from São Paulo, Brazil, and joined forces with Tim Haggerty and Danny Dahan, for a fusion of backgrounds to form the band’s unique chemistry. Embracing and celebrating their widespread connections, the band has toured across the U.S. and toured internationally in Canada, Morocco and Brazil.

Mr. Industry comes as a reflection and personification of the current state of the music and arts industry. “The character (Mr. Industry) represents the corporate mentality that has taken over the industry in a time where it is going through a crisis,” said Added Color. “Mr. Industry cares only about putting artists in a creative box and marketing them. Basically, if you sound like everyone else, it’s easier to associate you to other acts and sell you. The idea behind the EP connects with our overall message, which is about being yourself at all times no matter what. Mr. Industry is the force that we are fighting against as we live for honest and original music.”  Mr. Industry was recorded at state of the art Silver Cord Studios in Brooklyn, NY by Jamie Uertz (Blind Melon) and Grammy nominated Johann Meyer (Gojira/Roadrunner Records).

The video for “‘Same Place’ documents their 2017 Spring Tour of Morocco, during which they played seven shows in seven different cities. The video’s trippy feel matches the theme of the song, which is about a dream in a dystopia where people conform to social norms and obligations as they get older.

  • New York, The Silk City: Governors Ball 2018

Premier northeast music festival The Governors Ball returns to Randall’s Island in New York City in just a few weeks, taking place from Friday, June 1 through Sunday, June 3, 2018. GA weekend and single day tickets for each day are still available, but maybe not for long as various ticket packages, such as Sunday and Saturday GA tickets, are very close to being sold out. In just seven years running, Governors Ball has made a fast ascension to becoming one of New York City’s most anticipated annual music events, featuring a more savory lineup of artists with each passing summer. NYS Music will be there to bring you coverage of the 2018 festival.

The biggest news surrounds the festival’s heavy headliners. Rock virtuoso Jack White will be making a return to the event, having not played there since 2014. Last time White graced the Gov Ball stage, they matched his set with a same time performance from Skrillex. This year the tossup is with James Blake, the pianist, producer and soul singer who’s won the hearts of everybody, from Beyonce to Rick Rubin. If you haven’t heard, Blake just released a collaboration with Andre3000. Get on it.

Saturday night, in turn, will be capped off by a real rock gem. As a celebration of the ten-year anniversary of their second studio release, The 59 Sound, The Gaslight Anthem will be performing the record in its entirety. Full performances of albums are a live music treat that fans should experience if the opportunity presents itself.

Then there’s the act we’re all probably buzzing about, Silk City. Diplo, reigning favorite of the electronic dance music world, and Mark Ronson, the producer that can do no wrong, have teamed up to make a new collaborative disco album. Governors Ball is your chance to see the duo make their first ever live performance. Travis Scott, who has collaborated with Diplo’s project Major Lazer and also shared the stage with Ronson at last year’s Gov Ball, will be dropping his set immediately after Silk City—so this is keying up to be a weekend for Governor’s fans to remember.

But if there’s anyone that’s truly taking over the festival spotlight, it’s Eminem. Boston Calling, Bonnaroo, Firefly, and of course Gov Ball — the famed rapper is headlining them all. The last occurring slot time on Sunday night is reserved solely for him, so you can bet pretty much all eyes at the Ball will be on Slim.

As in past years, Gov Ball will be showcasing some of the most buzz-worthy, up-and-coming bands currently making noise across the indie, pop, rock and hip hop circuits. Across each of these mainstream genres, artists can go from fresh on the scene to topping the charts in no time. And on the way there, many of them seem to pass through Randall’s Island with dynamite festival sets. At this year’s Gov Ball, artists rocking this category are the likes of alt rockers Wolf Alice, country sensation Margo Price, breakout singer Billie Ellish and more. Special mention here: Belly. If you want to talk about a comeback, the Rhode Island-based alt punk band reunited in 2016 and, this month, just released their first album in twenty years, Dove, and it rocks.

That doesn’t even cover all of the musical goodness flooding Randall’s Island in three weeks. Hip hop supergroup N.E.R.D and NYC’s own Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are two other highly anticipated sets, given that they both have made huge reunions in the past year, while most others might be excited for the recently announced special set by Shawn Mendes.

The party will keep going for some after-hours concerts as part of The Governors Ball After Dark. Comprised mostly of the acts performing at the festival, this series of shows kicks off Thursday, May 30 and goes through the weekend at venues throughout the boroughs. While a handful of the shows are sold out, some tickets are still available. Check out the full lineup for After Dark here.

Aside from the music, Gov Ball is once again featuring close to 60 NYC-area food vendors with plenty of delicious tastes for everybody, including gluten-free and vegan options. More “deats” on the eats can be found here.

Tickets are nearly sold out for Saturday and Sunday, with some available for Friday here (it will sell out). Plenty of info on how to get to the festival and FAQs on how to have the best Gov Ball experience can be found on their website.

The 7th Annual Wintercourse was held at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on Saturday, January 20, 2018 on a warm and wonderful winter night filled with smiles, hugs, and good music.

wintercourse 2018Space Carnival brought the heat early, showcasing their dance laden jams as well as their heavier prog side, ending on a high note of their newly released single “Queen of Cups.” Six year Wintercourse veterans Cousin Earth played a set stacked full of high energy originals and unique covers including a throwback to Saturday Night Live’s “Natalie Portman Rap” and the Disney after school classic, “Tale Spin.” Headliner Bella’s Bartok puts on a show like no other, with a high energy dance party of klesmer and punk that was absolutely magnificent.

Teddy Midnight took the stage as the final act of Wintercourse 2018, delivering a set filled with surprises. • Electric Love Machine at American Beauty on New Year’s Eve

To round out 2017 with an electroerotica groove-bang, Baltimore’s resident livetronica band, Electric Love Machine, played a mix of old classics off Xeonofonex and Love Deluxe, with a few off their upcoming third release, Future Creatures.
