  • Free NYC post-Phish shows you don’t want to miss

    There is no shortage of after shows to hit up when Phish come to NYC for their New Years Eve run, and for those feeling the pinch of the holidays in the Big Apple, Sounds Good To Steve and the Offside Tavern have you covered.

    On December 28th and 29th, FREE after shows will get started at 11pm and stretch until to 3am, with the music going late and live painting both nights. Not far from Madison Square Garden, Offside Tavern is located at 137 w 14th Street between 7th avenue and Avenue of the Americas.

    On Friday the 28th, The Mike O’Donnell Band will be playing all night with live painting by James McNulty of The Uncommon Culture. For this new project, guitarist Mike O’Donnell called on some friends from various Long Island based bands and things took off. Michael Mirino, who plays bass with O’Donnell in the band Sofus is joined by Ben Pinnola from the band GeoTribe on keys. Julian Sarabia Maultsby from Medicine Fish teams up with Danny Roman for duel drumming and percussion duties. O’Donnell and Roman also play together in the up and coming band and winners of the 2018 Long Island Blues Challenge, Carrie and the Cats.

    Sunday, December 30th finds Brooklyn based Jazzjam band International Orange (iO) teaming up with rising ragers, Ronald Reggae for a long long crazy crazy night. Featuring former members of the Mike Gordon and Steve Kimock bands, and a current member of Peter Apfelbaum’s NY Hieroglyphics, iO pulls some serious grooves out of their deep pockets.

    Speaking of groove, sitting in with iO will be some special friends from the Easy Star All-Stars. If that’s not enough, undoubtedly still riding the high from jamming with Twiddle front man Mihali during one of their back to back Twiddle pre-shows at Garcia’s, you can count on the energy from Ronald Reggae to keep you going late. The bands provide the tunes, live painter GalaxyGus creates the eye candy and all you need to do is stroll on in.

  • LANY Celebrates ‘Malibu Nights’ With Sold Out Shows at Terminal 5

    Los Angeles trio LANY brought their SoCal indie pop sound from LA to NYC to celebrate the release of their second studio album, Malibu Nights, for two sold out nights at Terminal 5 on Nov. 4 and 5. Opening the evening as the crowd continued to roll in was Anna of the North, stage name for Norwegian singer-songwriter Anna Lotterud and her band.

    LANY hit the stage with the same energy seen on the 2018 Governors Ball main stage, condensed into the three-tier music club in midtown Manhattan. Frontman Paul Jason Klein’s charismatic stage presence gripped the ebullient audience throughout the entire show, navigating the dynamic between the effervescence of their pop sound and mellifluous melodies of their other songs.

    Malibu Nights was released a month prior on October 5 and met some quick success reaching #3 on Billboard’s Alternative Albums Chart and even bumped the band up to #11 on Billboard’s Emerging Artist chart.

    LANY’s brief 8-stop North American tour concluded at Terminal 5, but after a short break, the band began an aggressive tour of Europe which returns to the US in April and continues through Summer 2019. They’ll be back in NYC at the Hammerstein Ballroom on May 17.

  • Dave Matthews Band Opens NYC Run With Rarities and Special Guest

    Dave Matthews Band returned to the world’s most famous arena for back-to-back sold-out shows as part of their 10-city fall tour on Nov. 29 and 30.

    Having the opportunity of a summer tour to spotlight songs from the band’s 2018 release Come Tomorrow, DMB shied away from making that the focus with one four songs from the album in their set. Instead, they took the opportunity to mix the show up a bit with some rarities and older songs not often seen in their touring set lists.

    Highlighting the latter part of the nearly three-hour single set was a special appearance by the talented Eric Krasno, a NYC native and founding member of Soulive (alongside Alan and Neal Evans) and Lettuce. Krasno joined the band for a fiery solo on “Lie In Our Graves.” (DMB’s second night featured Warren Haynes as a special guest).

    With the early 2018 departure of the band’s long-time violinist Boyd Tinsley, whose parts were a defining part of their live sound, the band found keyboardist Buddy Strong to fill the spot. Strong is a talent behind the keys, touring or performing with majors acts like Usher, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and others. He brought a different dynamic to the performance than we are used to, adding a bit of funk and soul to the overall sound and crafting a new feel to some of the improvised moments of the show such as his solo on “Funny The Way It Is.”

    A few familiar songs anchored the setlist to keep the less-seasoned DMB fans engaged such as “#41” and “Satellite,” though night two’s set was a little bit more mainstream in the tunes. Closing the encore was one of DMB’s more commercially popular songs, “Ants Marching,” featuring some extended jamming and Beauford riffing around an a drum intro that slowly teased the song.

  • Monster Energy Outbreak Tour Announces first tour of 2019 featuring A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie

    The Monster Energy Outbreak Tour is coming out of the gates strong in 2019.   • RPI Celebrates Launch of New Music Degree with the Rensselaer Orchestra at Carnegie Hall

    A small yet well-known engineering school in Upstate NY isn’t somewhere that would be expected to produce the talent to perform at a world class concert hall. However, that’s what happened at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 24 when Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) celebrated the launch of a new Bachelor of Science degree program in music with a debut performance by the Rensselaer Orchestra.

    Produced by DCINY (Distinguished Concerts International New York), the show brought together friends, family and classmates of the performers along with NYC locals for an enjoyable night of classical music.

    Under the direction of Nicholas DeMaison, the Rensselaer Orchestra presented two pieces beginning with River Rouge Transfiguration composed by Missy Mazzoli (commissioned by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2013) and continuing with Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82, composed during the years of World War 1.

    RPI President Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson began the show with some opening remarks about the new music degree and program. “…the degree is a means of preparing today’s contemporary musician for fluency in the arts as well as in the sciences…We all have recognized the degree to which the arts can spark innovation and the value connected with the arts, science, and technology.” Dr. Jackson continues, “our new Bachelor of Science in Music will enable us to further incorporate the arts throughout our research, curriculum, and student life experience…The theme of our musical program this evening is also about transformation that celebrates the work of two innovative and inspiring composers, Missy Mazzoli and Jean Sibelius.”

  • Cousin Earth Says Goodbye to Tara Lawton

    Cousin Earth said an emotional goodbye to singer, percussionist and keyboardist Tara Lawton last Thursday at the Mercury Lounge. The band filled the room with high energy jams, to the audiences’ delight. Lawton jumped around on stage as she took in her final performance, while delivering vibrant vocals and funky keyboard riffs. At the end of the set, the band members took turns embracing with Lawton.

    Formula 5 followed this memorable performance with a delicious set of flawless jam rock. From the first song, the Capital Region band dove into a groove, and did not stop. Guitarist Joe Davis and Keyboardist Matt Richards were often jamming together, creating electric and cohesive improvisation.

  • Continental Closing Its Doors

    East Village bar Continental is closing its doors on Dec. 15. In its heyday from 1991-2006, the bar featured live music and hosted some of the greatest icons of the era: Iggy Pop, Guns N’ Roses, and The Ramones. The historic midtown Manhattan building that has been home to the bar for 27 years is being torn down for redevelopment.

    It is with heavy heart that I have to inform everyone that Continental’s days are numbered. Sometime late this year, this entire corner will be knocked down and developed. It’s truly heartbreaking that we and so many Old Skool places are falling by the wayside… This Bar has been my life. First as a Rock Club and then as a Dive Bar and I’ve loved every minute of it (mostly speaking). – Trigger Smith, Owner

  • Lotus Plays Games With Playstation Theater

    Lotus has been on top of their game this year, bringing their heavy bass-line jams across the country and on Saturday, November 24, the quintet came to NYC and played to a packed show at the Playstation Theater in Times Square.

  • Chelsea Music Hall Opens Doors

    There’s a new venue in Manhattan’s lower west side. Chelsea Music Hall is now open, and will host a variety of performances – from music and dance to comedy and immersive theater. The 250-capacity space with a state-of-the-art sound system offers an intimate space for art and music. Located at 407 W 15th Street in the basement of Chelsea Market, the food bar menu will be provided by celebrity Chef Eyal Shani of Chelsea Market’s Mizon restaurant.

  • New York Funeral Pop Duo MXMS Share New Single “Gravedigger”

    Looking for a new genre of music? Try Funeral Pop, and the sounds of New York based duo MXMS who have recently released their new single “Gravedigger.” The self-produced duo from New York City and small-town Oklahoma have created their own genre, which fuses classic melodic songwriting with dark, unfiltered chaos, driven by a thousand forms of fear. Just in time for the holidays. They’ll perform in Hollywood, CA at underground nightclub Cloak & Dagger on October 30.

    MXMS is short for “Me and My Shadow” and brings together singer Ariel Levitan and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Dawson. MXMS’ debut untitled album will be released on We Are:The Guard/Kobalt Records in early 2019.
