  • The DAB Sessions, an Allstar Exploration of Music to debut in January

    Adam Chase of Jazz is PHSH embarks on a new allstar exploration of music with The DAB Sessions, premiering on January 10 at Brooklyn Bowl. Joining Chase are Aron Magner of The Disco Biscuits and Jacob Bergson of Nerve, two keyboardists from leading exploratory electro-jazz live bands, as well as bass prodigy Felix Pastorius and Antibalas saxophonist Morgan Price. The evening is presented by Instrument Find and will mark the debut of The DAB Sessions.

    Get to know the players in The DAB Sessions:

    Jacob Bergson is the multi talented keyboardist and producer for the world renown electronic band, NERVE. NERVE is a band led by famed masterful drummer JoJo Mayer that formed out of underground parties hosted by JoJo Mayer that led the way for electronic music to be performed on live instruments.

    Aron Magner has been on the forefront of the electronic music scene since it first began to grow. As the keyboardist and founding member of The Disco Biscuits, Magner has been instrumental in the growing popularity of electronic music being performed by highly proficient live musicians.

    When many people hear Felix Pastorius perform there are reasonable and obvious preconceived notions and expectations being that he is playing the same instrument as his legendary bass playing father, Jaco Pastorius. While the appreciation of the seemingly genetic talent is obvious, it is also obvious that Felix has put the time in to achieve his own voice on the instrument.

    Adam Chase is a drummer that is multi-faceted and the visionary behind The DAB Sessions. Chase is a multi instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriting music director that entered the world of drums in the 1st grade when he had the opportunity to see a young Tony Royster Jr. make mastering the drums look easy.

    Morgan Price is a multi-instrumentalist that found his way into the Dap Tones world with his saxophone, flute, and keyboard skills. His skills on tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone have led him to steady gigs with Antibalas and The Duke Ellington Orchestra.

  • The Cityfox Odyssey Celebrating New Year’s With 27 Hour Music Marathon

    The Cityfox Experience is pushing the envelope of nightlife productions with The Cityfox Odyssey: 27 hours of house and techno acts from 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 to midnight on Jan. 1. This New Year’s Eve festival will encompass four stages across multiple rooms at Brooklyn’s Avant Gardner and feature more than 20 world-class artists, including Andhim, Adriatique, Brian Cid, Heidi, Honey Dijon, Jamie Jones, Lee Burridge, Tale Of Us, WhoMadeWho (Hybrid Set).

    Avant Gardner will be transformed into an indoor festival space, with dazzling lights, crystalline KV2 audio sound system and visual projections. Event goers on New Year’s Eve will enjoy a special countdown to the New Year.

    Re-entry is permitted, so ticket holders can come and go throughout the 27-hour long marathon. But for those who want to stick it out, there will be food available from local vendors and an ambient lounge for taking breaks.

  • Tea Leaf Green Brings The Heat To The Northeast

    Tea Leaf Green recently celebrated 20 years as a band and was greeted with an exceptionally warm Northeast welcome. This run was special because the San Francisco-based jam quartet hasn’t visited the area in two years. These shows notably mark the second time bass player Eric DiBerardino played with Tea Leaf Green in the New York City Metro region. DiBerardino replaced bass superstar Reed Mathis in 2016. Fans are excited to be more acquainted with his style.

    StageOne in Fairfield, CT (11/16/2018)

    Described as a “coffee shop stage,” StageOne in Fairfield, CT offered fans a chance to see the band up close with great acoustics. The venue has a 225 person capacity, with seating on both sides of the stage. Tea Leaf Green rewarded those in attendance with a classic set of favorites.

    The set began with “5000 Acres” and “Ride Together,” which got the crowd on their feet and grooving. Next up were “Make a Connection,” “Innocence” and the electro-funk jam “Germinating Seed,” featuring notable guitar segments from guitarist Josh Clark. The set wrapped up on a high note with the perennial hit “If It Wasn’t For the Money,” featuring outstanding vocals and smooth solos by keyboardist Trevor Garrod.

    Set II picked up where Set I left off, starting with the funky “These Two Chairs“ and an electrified “Don’t Curse the Night.” The high energy “One Reason“ got the crowd ready for the first jam of the night, “Gasaholic.” Garrod’s soulful vocals and funky keyboard execution combined with Clark’s guitar improvisation made this an unforgettable rendition.

    “All Of Your Cigarettes“ brought a few chill moments before Jordan Giangreco of The Breakfast joined Tea Leaf Green on stage, playing organ next to Garrod for the high energy favorites “Give Me One More Chance“ and “Incandescent Devil.” Musical nirvana between all five musicians was reached during the second jam of the night and closed the second set on a high note.

    The encore brought the energy down to earth for the melodic Garrod classic, “Earth and Sky.”

    Brooklyn Bowl in Brooklyn, NY (11/17/2018)

    Tea Leaf Green has a rich history of high energy jamming at the Brooklyn Bowl, which features a bowling alley adjacent to the stage. Gadadu and Greg Humphrey’s Electric Trio opened and got the crowd on their feet.

    The band was ready to rock and roll from the very first song, “Devil’s Pay,” including eloquent vocals from Garrod and mind-numbing guitar solos by Clark. The harmonica-fueled “Let Us Go“ was the perfect precursor for the jam of the night, “Red Ribbons” > “Garden III.” Both are classic Tea Leaf Green songs, and “Garden” included a unique rock infused jam, which delighted longtime fans.

    Garrod’s vocals and keyboard skills shined in “Been So Long“ and “Cops Took My Weed“ followed by a Clark electric guitar clinic in “Space Hero“ and “Hot Dog.” There is no question how talented this band is.

    The soulful Garrod tune “Kali Yuga” closed out the set, and included celebration confetti from the audience. The encore began with “Carter Hotel,” an inspiring ballad sung by Clark. The show ended on a high note with the electric “Vote on Tuesday,” including more audience confetti to close this memorable night.

    The Northeast was jubilant after two fantastic Tea Leaf Green shows and awaits their return for more soulful, funky improvisational rock and roll.

  • Iron Maiden bringing the Legacy of the Beast Tour to North America next summer

    Iron Maiden makes its return to North America next summer with the Legacy of the Beast Tour. The band, known for elaborate stage shows, is calling this tour its biggest production yet.

    Legacy of the BeastThe tour will kick off July 18 in Sunrise, FL and visit arenas and amphitheaters throughout the U.S. and Canada next summer. The itinerary includes a July 26 stop at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and an Aug. 13 visit to Buffalo’s KeyBank Center.

    Bassist Steve Harris said of the tour:

    We gave a lot of thought to the set list for this Tour as the songs needed to follow the narrative of the changing worlds of the stage show. We feel we ended up with a very strong and well balanced set mixing songs we haven’t played in many years like ‘Flight of Icarus,’ ‘Sign of The Cross’ and ‘The Clansman’ with songs we know the fans want to hear like ‘The Trooper,’ ‘2 Minutes to Midnight,’ ‘The Number of The Beast,’ ‘Fear of The Dark,’ ‘Run to The Hills,’ ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ and others, reflecting the journey through the different themes of the show.

    Tickets for most shows go on sale Nov. 16 at 10:00 a.m. local time. British band The Raven Age, which includes Harris’s son, George on guitar, will be the opener with Fozzy opening the Los Angeles show.

    The North American leg is continuing the tour that sold out venues across Europe last year and included props such as a full-scale WWII-era Spitfire plane flying above the stage during the Powerslave track, “Aces High.”

    The production is based around the Legacy of the Beast mobile game that takes the band’s mascot Eddie through various adventures though Iron Maiden’s history.

  • Lettuce Announces Busy January Tour

    Lettuce launches the far-reaching and fast-paced Vibe Up 2019 tour in Rochester on Jan.10. The funk group will return to New York later for performances at the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park on Jan. 12 and at Brooklyn Steel on Jan. 19.

    The band’s legendary career spans two decades. Their sound has matured and “stewed” to perfection over time as evidenced on their latest album Witches Stew. The new album is contemporary jazz fusion inspired by and in tribute to Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew. It would be an oversight to ignore that music like Davis’ was what influenced and initially drew the group together at Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 1992.

  • Ariana Grande Begins Her Sweetener World Tour in Albany

    Singer-songwriter Ariana Grande will return to the Capital Region for the first time since her Honeymoon Avenue World Tour in 2015, and kicks off her 4th World Tour, featuring her new album Sweetener, at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY on March 18, 2019. Ticket pre-sale for the Sweetener World Tour begins November 1st through November 3rd via American Express.

    The pop princess revealed on Wednesday October 24 via Twitter that she would soon announce the world tour dates for her latest album, released in August earlier this year. Not one to disappoint, the next day Grande shared her initial U.S. performances on arianagrande.com as well as posting them on her Twitter. The singer has promised that fans abroad can expect international tour dates to be announced.

    Former Victorious actress is also planning on making three other appearances in New York during the course of her tour, one in Western NY followed up by hitting two major performance venues in NYC. Falling soon after her Albany concert, Grande’s third Sweetener performance brings her to the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NY on March 22, 2019. The last two dates announced for the U.S.-portion of the Sweetener tour are June 14 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the famous Madison Square Garden on June 18, 2019.

  • Aqueous Shares 2018 Halloween Concert Theme

    Buffalo-based, rock-quartet Aqueous is celebrating the launch of their latest LP, Color Wheel, with one of their most extensive tours to date starting on October 24th in Hamden, CT. This year Aqueous will be bringing their notorious improvisational style to the legendary Knitting Factory in Brooklyn for Halloween 2018. “We take Halloween pretty seriously over at camp AQ. In previous years we’ve done some wild themes where we’ll incorporate all the music and the whole vibe of whatever the theme is,” shares Aqueous guitarist, Mike Gantzer. Previous Halloween themes have included Wizard of Oz, Back To The Future and Super Mario Brothers.

    Attendees of this year’s Halloween special can expect a one-of-a-kind, Nicktoons influenced performance from the group backed with support from Chicago-based band Mungion (pronounced mung-yin). Gantzer spoke further regarding the excitement and motivation behind their upcoming event by stating,

    We wanted to pay tribute to a golden era of cartoon history: Nicktoons! We all grew up loving shows like Doug, Rocko’s Modern Life, Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Hey Arnold, Spongebob Squarepants, and the list goes on and on. The music from a lot of these shows is so awesome, and it’s gonna be a blast diving down this rabbit hole of nostalgia and blending the whole Nickelodeon vibe within the AQ sound. Add Mungion as support to the mix, and you’ve got a pretty bombastic show going down for Halloween this year.

  • Brooklyn’s Phony Ppl share funky new tune ‘Something About Your Love’

    Brooklyn-based quintet Phony Ppl have shared their funky new song, “Something About Your Love”, off their forthcoming album, mō’zā-ik, due out Oct. 19. Phony Ppl blend soul, funk, and R&B and are not limited to just one genre, as evidenced by this track mixed by Grammy Award winner Qmillion. Complex premiered the song, who said “Although this track details the experience of heartache and pondering the right time to leave a toxic situation, the band creates a balance with the instrumentation that mirrors the good moments we tend to focus on when ignoring all the red flags.”

    Explaining the track, frontman Elbee Thrie noted, “It’s a song about staying in a relationship you know is poisonous. We recorded it at a Universal Audio session in Santa Cruz, CA then finished back in NYC at ‘The Cabin’ at The Manhattan Center” Phony Ppl also earned cosigns from heavyweights Childish Gambino and Tyler The Creator, who named “End of the Night” one of his favorite tracks that year.

    Phony Ppl have performed with Erykah Badu and The Roots, along with opening for 2017 breakout star Kali Uchis on her nationwide tour, and individual members have shared their talents on projects from Snake Hips, Princess Nokia, Mac Miller and Odd Future.

    All five members of Phony Ppl come from a long line of musical families which helped cultivate their own love for the artform. Each member attended music classes and schools across the country, including Juilliard and the School of Rock, before finding each other in 2009. Those early after-school jam sessions evolved into the band’s current lineup, featuring Elbee Thrie on vocals, Elijah Rawk on lead guitar, Matt “Maffyuu” Byas on drums, Aja Grant on keys and Bari Bass on bass guitar.

  • Hearing Aide: Doug Berns Band ‘Outlier’

    Doug Berns Band release debut albumBrooklyn trio, the Doug Berns Band, are quietly meshing together key elements of rock to create a sound that is both accessible and flashy. The group is fronted by bassist, singer and songwriter Doug Berns (EMEFE, The YeahTones), and features Sean Salant (AwakenTheShadow, Nova Lantern) on guitar and Coleman Bartels on drums. The group is releasing their debut album, Outlier, on October 18th, the same night as their release party at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. In light of the upcoming release, NYS Music had the pleasure of checking the album out early. At the bottom of this review, the group is premiering their newest music video for their single, “Outlier”, the title track of the album. The nine track album is high octane from start to finish. It meshes the stylings of heavier groups like Metallica, lighter grunge like Alice in Chains, and an element of prog rock with soaring vocals and ripping guitar solos. The group demonstrates their technical ability in a slew of tight performances that highlight each member’s grasp on their intended sound.

    While the Doug Berns Band describes themselves as impressionistic rockers, it is tough to label them in this way. The album doesn’t take too many risks in terms of mood and timbre, but rather leans on catchy instrumental hooks and sticky vocal lines laid over heavy, well-executed instrumentals. Berns’ vocals float over top of thick distorted guitars in a way similar to how LaBrie’s (Dream Theater) vocals are the cherry on top of his band’s instrumental as opposed to being the main focal point. In the second track, “It Gets To You”, Berns shows off his falsetto, and establishes his presence in the mix without standing out too much. The melody is written well, and does a good job of leaving room for the guitar to fill space between phrases. This is especially potent in the fifth song “Mainline”, where the lyrics drive the narrative a bit more and the guitar provides great support to the song as a whole instead of pushing to stand out.

    The bass’ presence in the album deserves a big shout out, as Berns keeps a solid foundation when needed and doubles up with the guitar to add weight to certain lines. The guitar often runs off on its own to great success. The blazing and technically proficient solos are a big stand out. While Salant’s guitar is coated in dirt more often than not, there are a few points (namely in “Hell”) where the clean tones stand out just as much as the gritty lead tones- a nod to Salant’s ability to navigate modes within a key and color the solos so they stand out melodically from the rest of the backing instrumentals. The eighth song, “Ready Player One” features a specifically heavy solo, and covers a ton of harmonic ground. The drums remain pretty true to the genre and breathe an air of familiarity into each song. This might entail keeping the pulse while the guitar plays more complex rhythmic, palm muted riffs (like in the second track “It Gets To You”) or just holding the line on the odd-time parts of songs (like in “Meet Me”). This isn’t to take away the energy Bartels adds with his lightning fills. He shows flashes of his chops, but tends more frequently towards servicing the song as a whole which adds to the flow of the entire work.

    This album offers a good look at a band who is taking pieces from their predecessors and melding them to create a unique amalgamation of elements. In a way, this is impressionistic in itself without having to reach too far into the avant-garde. While the instrumentations are more traditional, the compositions and well-crafted structures allow the band to show their experimental side and give the listener some music theory fodder. Outlier is an accessible and exciting listen, a nice treat to hear for fans of heavier rock.

  • Hearing Aide: The Upstart Crows ‘The Upstart Crows’

    The Upstart CrowsMoving out from a small college town music scene into one of the world’s largest and most diverse arts cities is daunting. For The Upstart Crows, fitting in means being different. So, when they moved from a small college town in New Hampshire into the Big Apple, they were able to settle right in. Late in August the band released their first album; a combination of punk, honkey tonk, and a vaudeville styled theatrical influence. The self-titled album, The Upstart Crows, is a grab bag of these various influences that the band draws from. The two piece group, comprised of Jon Adams (vocals/guitar) and Forest DeCoste (drums/bass), recorded at Proper Pop Studios in Brooklyn, NY. The band seized the opportunity to layer on elements that their two-member setup has handcuffed them from doing; the band plays as a guitar and drum duo typically. The addition of bass and some other backing instruments gives every song more dimension and enabled the group to hash out the ideas a bit more. Despite this, the album does feel a little meandering, focusing on the lyrical theme of sadness but not staying true in terms of genre and flow. The album remains an interesting listen despite the scattershot and shows how well the duo can formulate a song with consistently catchy melodies and tight performances.

    The album opens a little heavier with “Bad Medicine”, the first single The Upstart Crows put out in anticipation of the album. The song feels similar to an early 2000’s era emo tune, without the over-saturated production. The bass line fits well with the drum beat and provides a solid foundation for the rich guitar chords to lay out the progressions. The guitar ultimately leads the bass, with both instruments locking together in such a way you’d expect to hear in a song written by a smaller crew of people. The song is fun, heavy, and not overbearing. Adam’s vocals immediately stand out as theatrical and exciting. A few songs follow this formula of heavier instrumentals and grittier vocals. One vocal performance, from “Lying and Crying”, has Adam’s singing with a distortion on his vocals. This works really well with his higher tenor voice, commanding the listener’s attention. The end of this song also has an octave-matched guitar solo that adds some meat and more development to the melody.

    While the heavier songs provide good energy to the album, The Upstart Crows do really well in their more pop-oriented songs. Adam’s vocals shine in track 7, “Heart to California”. A more bubbly song with an indie/alt vibe, the band takes a catchy hook and layers on a lot of fun percussive parts and some group vocal refrains. Similar to a song you’d hear from The Dear Hunter, this offers a view of the band that would be interesting to hear more of. “What Did I Say” gives a similar vibe, keeping the song fresh with catchy hooks and a honkey-tonk feel. Adam’s vocals float above the instrumental like Ben Folds or Tom Chaplin (Keane). The mix gives the song a heavier feel without pumping the distortion of muddying the vocals. Like a few other songs on the album, this one had a seamless transition from the previous track. The band makes portions of the album feel like they were recorded one after the other without break, which yields a cool effect.

    From the heavy distorted wash of instruments, to a more jangly and organic songs, this album does not get boring. While the rocky flow and genre mixing can be a drawback at points, the ability to write consistently catchy hooks and execute performances that are tight make this album fun to listen to. The Upstart Crows cover a wide spectrum of genres in this album, and it’d be interesting to hear an album (or two) that focus on a steadier narrative and true genre. With this first release, the band has started to establish a theatrical alt-rock sound that can be refined to great effect. Check out the album, and if you’re in the NYC area don’t hesitate to catch a live set! You’ll get something a little different than the album, and that’s a great reason to catch a live set.
