  • Lespecial: A Power-Rock Trio, Where They’ve Been, and What’s Coming Next

    About three quarters through the Fall/Winter 2018 tour, power-rock trio lespecial brought their unique style of genre bending jams to Putnam Place and joined me for a conversation about who they are, where they’ve been, and what’s coming up next.

    The show at Putnam Place was a much-anticipated stop for the region since their set at Adirondack Independence Festival this past summer where lespecial played a high energy set that enraptured the audience and grew the regional fan base significantly. The heavy grooving trio is composed of Luke Bemand (Bass/Synth/Percussion/Vocals), Jonathan Grusauskas (Guitar/Synth/Sampler/Percussion/Vocals), and Rory Dolan (Drums/Sampler/Percussion/Vocals.) The three childhood friends, who grew up in Connecticut and are now based in New York and Boston, have a lifetime of experiences to draw on in their creative process. Individually they are musical powerhouses, and together they won’t be stopped.

    Emily VanderWiel: This fall/winter tour has been quite extensive so far and you’ve covered a lot of ground since September. What have been some highlights of the tour so far?

    Luke Bemand: The Lespectacle show we do every year is usually a highlight for us, it’s our Halloween show, we collaborate with our friends at The Reliquarium and do an interactive art space. This year we did it at their space in Rhode Island where we had two stages.  Some of our favorite producers and bands were there; Freddy Todd, Bella’s Bartok, we collaborated with our friends Supersillyus and that for us is our big yearly event. It’s the eighth year we’ve done it… so that’s always fun. It’s stressful and insane but it’s fun and we’ve done it in Brooklyn the last five years so being closer to Boston, Rhode Island and Connecticut is cool for us.

    EV: I saw some video from Lespectacle, there were a lot of nice pro shot videos.

    LB: Yeah! That was all this guy!! (pointing to his brother and lespecial road warrior Sean Bemand)

    LB: Another fun one was Jacksonville with Moon Hooch, and we just announced a show in Burlington, VT with them on December 29 at Higher Ground. Looking forward to that, those guys are really cool, with our friend Honeycomb too.

    LB: Honeycomb is a beatboxer from Northampton and we’ve collaborated with him for a couple years, playing festivals in the Northeast but we hope to collab a lot more.

    EV: There’s been a lot of new material popping up at shows, do you guys have a new album in the works?

    LB: We have a ton of new material, we have enough for a new EP or a new album. We’ve been putting out a lot of live clips of our newer stuff. We have a new track with Zion I that we’ve been working on and playing out at shows. We have a lot of different things in the works, but the focus has been on touring and with playing out so much it’s hard to get in the studio, but we’ve been rehearsing, together a lot more and writing a lot. The easiest place for people to hear our new stuff is to come out to a show. Definitely within the next year we’d like to put out a new EP or a full-length album.

    EV: The tour has been covering a lot of ground, so there is certainly a lot of opportunity for fans to get out and see the new material at shows… it looks like you guys are busy straight through New Year’s?

    LB: Yeah! Next week we are in Baltimore with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, at Rams Head Live… that’ll be cool and then we are back up to Hartford for more of a hometown show in Connecticut at Arch Street Tavern and then our New Year’s run is going to be Pacific Standard Tavern in New Haven, The Snow Barn in West Dover, VT…which is an awesome place, we did it last year, played two sets and it was a lot of fun, and then Aqueous on New Year’s Eve in Buffalo. Now with Moon Hooch show in Burlington added, it will be four shows in a row.

    EV: You guys will probably be ready for a break after that?

    LB: (Laughs) There’s no breaks!

    EV: What a great way to ring in a New Year though, that many exciting shows back to back…

    LB: Totally, those are really exciting. It’s fun because it’s a couple headlining shows and then a couple supporting shows for bands that we like and that we enjoy playing with. Then January we are going to be headed out to Colorado and we are going to be announcing a whole bunch of other January dates, so there’s no real breaks. People will say “how was the tour?” and it’s like, wait? It’s not over yet! It’s just never stopping, which is both good and bad. We don’t do a full on two-month tour but we will play for a couple weeks and be off for a week and play for a couple weeks so it’s cycles that kinda keep going. It keeps the wheels going, we keep writing on the road.

    EV: As far as the song writing goes, do you all write? How does your creative process work?

    LB: It’s definitely a collaborative process, one of us could come up with an idea for a song, like maybe Jon will have a riff for a song or something like that and we take it to practice and then we kinda add our parts. There’s never anybody that says here’s a song and this is your part, and this is your part, etc. The whole writing process is very much that somebody can bring an idea to the table and then everyone… it’s the ideas that build. So there’s that give and pull when there’s no band leader and we write our music as a trio.

    EV: The show you guys have booked for tomorrow night is a cool concept. Can you tell me a little about that?

    LB: So, it’s at the Brighton Music Hall and it also happens to be Jon’s birthday. What’s cool about it is that we are doing one set of originals and one special 90’s “Headbangers Ball” set. Balkun Brothers are playing with us and doing a Nirvana set… pretty excited about this show because we all grew up listening to this music.

    EV: You’re finishing the year out strong, ending one hell of a tour with a show with Aqueous in Buffalo!

    LB: Yes, we are for sure looking forward to that, love those guys. It should be a good time! It’s not the end of the tour though, we will be announcing some dates out west soon so people should definitely keep an eye out for that.

  • Sirius XM Octane Announces First Ever ‘Accelerator Tour’

    Sirius XM Octane, the leader in playing todays hard rock and heavy metal, has announced its first ever curated tour titled the “Accelerator Tour,” named after what the radio station calls their newest, hottest charting hit singles, usually by new up-and-coming artists.

    Octane’s first attempt at a tour will feature all artists who have made the Accelerator List, including headliners Like A Storm, and special guest Royal Tusk, and Afterlife.

    The 19-city tour will makes its debut in Anaheim on Jan. 23 and make a brief stop in New York on Feb. 12 at The Gramercy Theatre. XM subscribers can take part in a special pre-sale, with general public tickets going on sale Dec. 14.

    Since establishing themselves as the best hard rock and radio station available in the U.S., several of today’s best in hard rock and meta luse Octane as their preferred platform when releasing world premieres of new music.   • Cannibal Corpse Guitarist Arrested on Multiple Charges

    Death metal guitarist Pat O’Brien of Cannibal Corpse was arrested after a wild series of events at his home in Northdale, FL.

    Authorities were called to O’Brien’s home after it caught fire while he was not at home. The fire set off ammunition that was inside the metal shredder’s house, adding another element of danger to the situation while firefighters battled the blaze, forcing them to retreat.

    While the house was burning, O’Brien was allegedly committing a robbery at a nearby family member’s residence. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office was dispatched to the home after a burglary call from the residence after the 53-year-old entered his relative’s home without permission and refused to leave when the owners of the home pleaded with him to go.

    O’Brien eventually left the house, but not before pushing a woman down who was at the scene before fleeing into the backyard where police found him hiding behind a nearby fence. The guitarist then ignored commands by the police and charged them with a knife, prompting the authorities to use their taser guns on him. The home owner stated that O’Brien broke into the house and talked to him about “the rapture,” and that “someone was after him.” The owner believed that O’Brien was hallucinating and even hid inside a closet in the house.

    No one was hurt during the fire or burglary, and authorities have not stated how the fire started. There were also military-style flamethrowers found in O’Brien’s home.

    O’Brien appeared in court wearing nothing but an anti-suicide vest and shackles around his hands and feet. The Hillsborough County judge hearing the case set bail at $50,000, pending passage of a court-ordered drug test.

    If convicted of both charges, O’Brien could land him some serious jail time. The burglary of an occupied dwelling with assault charge could result in a potential $10,000 fine and a possible lifetime prison sentence. The second charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer could carry a 30-year prison term. So far, no charges have been made regarding the house fire.

    Cannibal Corpse was recently announced as one of the openers for Slayer’s continuing farewell tour in spring of 2019. The band has not commented on its lead guitarist’s situation.

  • Sonic Temple Begins Where Rock on the Range Left Off

    Sonic Temple, the new art and music festival that has replaced one of rock, and metal’s biggest annual festivals in Rock on the Range in 2019, has announced the weekend lineup for their inaugural event May 17-19, 2019 in Columbus, OH.

    Since it’s debut in 2007, Rock on the Range’s fan base grew bigger with each passing year, along with the star studded headliners and supporting bands that helped make the festival feel special and unique every year. Sonic Temple continues that trend.

    Foo Fighters, Disturbed, and System of a Down are the scheduled headliners for each night of the festival.

    Also included in the three day lineup are Bring Me the Horizon, The Prodigy, Ghost, Halestorm, Lamb of God, Chevelle, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Cult, In This Moment, Gojira, Meshuggah, Killswitch Engage, Parkway Drive, Black Label Society, Beartooth, Avatar, Pussy Riot, Bad Wolves, Fever 333, Badflower, the Glorious Sons, Issues, Yungblud, H09909, the Black Dahlia Murder, Don Broco, Wage War, Hands Like Houses, While She Sleeps, Palaye Royale and several more.

    Andrew Dice Clay, Henry Rollins, and Pauly Shore will headline the Sirius/XM Comedy and Spoken Word Tent.

    Rock on the Range co-founder, Danny Wimmer, and his promotion/production company Danny Wimmer Presents, have now turned their attention to Sonic Temple. Wimmer stated:

  • Hearing Aide: Jigsaw Youth ‘Sorry For The Distortion’

    jigsaw youthJigsaw Youth came out swinging with their sophomore album, Sorry for the Distortion. The biggest change this time around is the production value. Their style, attitude and sound is similar to their first collection but great production value, layering and adventurous blending of genres breathes new life into the group. New York natives Nastacha Beck, (guitar) Julia Mannarino (drums) and Maria Alvarez (bass/vocals) have obviously poured their heart and soul into this one and created a highly polished album. 

    Punk is all about fuzzy guitar, relentless drums, powerful lyrics and-chant worthy choruses, but when an album is under-produced, it can make it indigestible. I’m all for dirty and washy punk-ish sounds, but if instrumentation isn’t balanced then the group can come off as illegitimate. Jigsaw Youth overcame this, striking gold with producer Gary Nieves Jr. of Cobra Sun Studio. This is not to say Jigsaw’s song writing and talent doesn’t deserve any attention, because they have created some fiery and energetic songs.

    Hit play and “Stillborn Black” blasts out with a quintessential punk sound. Alvarez’s vocals are an instant hit. They’re baritone, atonal and at times, loud and crackly – she’s a perfect fit for this genre with her talents shining throughout the album. This one has a catchy chorus, a good harmonic break mid track and is a fantastic prelude to what the rest of the album has to bring. It also features an exciting solo from Beck – great choice in guitar tone as well.

    After listening to “Stillborn Black” and “Don’t Make Me Freak,” it’s obvious this group’s source of inspiration is powerful female punk groups. Instrumentally, there’s a lot of similarities to L7 and Bikini Kill but the group is really separated by Alvarez’s aggressive vocals. What I’m loving about this group is their ability to give the songs more depth by jumping into different sounds mid track. Instead of a constant barrage of punk, “Freak” jumps into a ballad with acoustic guitar work and ethereal singing from the group. We also hear how versatile Alvarez can be when she goes sultry before turning savage towards the end of the song.

    “Flirts of Fire” is a nice change of pace from a latter, dark tone. We still hear influences of popular female punk groups though. It showcases an upbeat and major sound and we get to hear the talents of Mannario on drums. She’s clean, precise and gets to flaunt her ferocious speed with her wild single stroke rolls.

    This group really checks all the boxes in the punk genre. “Serotonin” is a sluggish but powerful track with Nirvana’s slimy, grunge sound that made them so popular. “Serotonin” may be slow and lazy but it’s layered with airy backup vocals throughout that give it some more depth as well as valley and peaks of tempo changes and attitude. Did I mention Alvarez’s voice is really good?

    “Surf Rock Song” is another key track. It’s a great blend of classic punk and (believe it or not) surf rock. It’s not something that’s been heard too often and it’s just fun to listen to. “All Around (Fucked Up)” is a great cap off for the album – it’s the best summary of the groups unique sound. This song perfectly blends their influences together and gives Alvarez a chance to show off both her sultry and intense side of her vocals that make this group stand out from the rest.

    This album is going to yield a great deal of recognition from their community and in a live setting, will definitely rake in some new fans. So far, the only place to see them is on Saturday, December 1st in The Loft at City Winery. Tickets are $10 online, $12 day on the day of show. Stay tuned to their Facebook page for more info.

  • Dino Skatepark unveil “Boogeyman” video

    This past Halloween, Long Island based prog rockers Dino Skatepark has released the music video for “Boogeyman.” The punk band gets heavy in “Boogeyman,” with eleven different time changes, and style changes from punk to jazz and metal. The video was filmed by local videographer Sean Johnson with direction inspired by Dino Skatepark vocalist Dylan Belpanno and drummer Joe Quinn.

    Dino Skatepark has released four singles, including “East Quogue” released in June 2018 and are in the process of releasing four new songs throughout the course of the next few months accompanied by music and lyric videos.   • No music falls on deaf ears at Palaye Royale Las Vegas performance

    Music is one of the most inclusive interests humans are able to appreciate and share. Genres expand to any identity or personality you could think of and easy accessibility make it available for any to enjoy. But what if you couldn’t hear? How do the deaf listen to music? Unfortunately some would say they simply don’t. However, this September those barriers were broken and deaf fans got to experience music on a level like never before. A collaboration between music group Palaye Royale and Music: Not Impossible Technology led to a test launch at their Las Vegas show.

    The four year long technological advancement has been described as a five-piece device consisting of a vibro harness, two wristbands and two ankle bands. The device syncs with the live performance accordingly and each of the five areas vibrate along with it. The vibes have several settings which can be adjusted from low, medium or strong vibes and immerses the listener in a “surround body” sensation. In addition, a sign language interpreter was also involved on stage for the convenience of other hearing impaired attendees.

  • Iron Maiden bringing the Legacy of the Beast Tour to North America next summer

    Iron Maiden makes its return to North America next summer with the Legacy of the Beast Tour. The band, known for elaborate stage shows, is calling this tour its biggest production yet.

    Legacy of the BeastThe tour will kick off July 18 in Sunrise, FL and visit arenas and amphitheaters throughout the U.S. and Canada next summer. The itinerary includes a July 26 stop at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and an Aug. 13 visit to Buffalo’s KeyBank Center.

    Bassist Steve Harris said of the tour:

    We gave a lot of thought to the set list for this Tour as the songs needed to follow the narrative of the changing worlds of the stage show. We feel we ended up with a very strong and well balanced set mixing songs we haven’t played in many years like ‘Flight of Icarus,’ ‘Sign of The Cross’ and ‘The Clansman’ with songs we know the fans want to hear like ‘The Trooper,’ ‘2 Minutes to Midnight,’ ‘The Number of The Beast,’ ‘Fear of The Dark,’ ‘Run to The Hills,’ ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ and others, reflecting the journey through the different themes of the show.

    Tickets for most shows go on sale Nov. 16 at 10:00 a.m. local time. British band The Raven Age, which includes Harris’s son, George on guitar, will be the opener with Fozzy opening the Los Angeles show.

    The North American leg is continuing the tour that sold out venues across Europe last year and included props such as a full-scale WWII-era Spitfire plane flying above the stage during the Powerslave track, “Aces High.”

    The production is based around the Legacy of the Beast mobile game that takes the band’s mascot Eddie through various adventures though Iron Maiden’s history.

  • Photo Gallery: Phish dresses up as Kasvot Växt, Faceplants Las Vegas into Rock

    Phish fans got a trick, and a treat on Halloween. For their Halloween show, Phish didn’t cover a classic rock album like fans hoped, but instead did something far scarier – they performed brand new music as Kasvot Växt to a sold out MGM Garden Grand Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

    kazvot vaxtCombining their 2013 (Wingsuit) and 2014 (Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House) costumes, Phish created something completely different, brand new and unique, to say the least – they invented a band, backstory and full album to cover, performing as Kasvot Växt, a Scandinavian prog rock outfit dressed all in white and bringing an incredibly fresh sound to Phish’s legacy of Halloween runs.

    kasvot vaxtWearing all white suits on an all white stage and playing all white instruments, Phish performed i rokk, which when combined with Kasvot Växt translates as ‘Faceplant into rock.’ All 10 songs were brand new Phish, or Kasvot Växt, depending on how you look at it.

    What was most amazing about the show is the level of secrecy that kept this set so under wraps that no one knew what would really happen until the first notes of the set. Performing a new album has been done before in 2013 with Wingsuit, and again in 2014 in Las Vegas with Chilling Thrilling, but combining those two efforts and writing 10 songs in a prog rock/metal-ish style AND the Kazvot Växt persona to go along with it is a level up, even for Phish.

  • Slipknot delivers Halloween treat

    The masked Iowans of Slipknot unleashed a surprise new video on fans Wednesday for Halloween. The video for “All Out Life” from their upcoming, yet-to-be-named album was produced by band member M. Shawn Crahan — aka “Clown.” Apple Music’s Beats 1 debuted the single with frontman Corey Taylor in studio.

    Taylor told host Zane Lowe, “Everybody talks about toxic masculinity and toxic fandom these days. For me, it’s more about this toxic idea that unless something came out 10 minutes ago, it’s not any good, and that bothers me.”

    The single, the first new music from the band since 2014’s .5:The Gray Chapter,  is a rallying cry according to Taylor, “Let’s not talk about old. Let’s not talk about new. Let’s talk about what’s good, what’s real, and get behind that and start embracing things that matter.”

    Taylor calls the upcoming album, “One of the darkest chapters in Slipknot’s history.” Get a glance of what’s upcoming with the video for the new single below.
