On the first day of summer, June 21, Albany’s Alive at Five summer concert series was fortunate to have Matisyahu perform to a packed crowd at Jennings Landing. Matisyahu had just wrapped up his 16-stop Strength to Strength Tour with Stephen Marley, and if you weren’t able to see him this past Thursday, he has a full schedule of shows through September, including 6 stops across New York State in July and August. Matisyahu was joined by Upstate NY natives Mirk, a 6-piece powerhouse band that got the party started with originals and familiar covers.

Rockin’ on the River in Troy hosted Albany’s Wurliday on June 20 for some lively funk and soul, with guest vocals by Tyrone Hartzog and Ilana Morris, and led by Justin Henricks on guitar. Super Doppler followed with their brand of country rock and roll from Norfolk, VA, who perform later this year at The Sloss Music Festival in Birmingham, AL.

Syracuse is ‘Still Into You,’ Paramore
It is nothing but awe inspiring seeing Paramore go from performing on a tiny pink bus on the Shiragirl side stage on Warped Tour in 2005, to seeing lead vocalist Hayley Williams having pink hair and wearing a pink jacket, performing in front of thousands of fans at the Lakeview Amphitheater on June 17 who were still into you.
Kicking off the show with “Grudges,” Williams couldn’t help but have a huge smile on her face as she sang. Williams kept her performance fun, kicking her stylish yellow boots in the air, yet still letting her raw emotions shine through as she knelt to get closer to their fans.
Williams dedicated their hit “Still Into You” to Paramore, which was a cheeky nod to all the trials and tribulations that the band has dealt with throughout its career.
Halfway through Paramore’s set, the band took a quick break to allow their crew to set up the stage for an acoustic mini set. They came back out to perform a cover of “Passionfruit,” “Misguided Ghosts” and “26.” This was a very intimate and personal portion of the set with Williams sharing some insight on how she felt now as opposed to when she initially wrote “Misguided Ghosts” and even teased about the audience giving her a therapy session.Dialing the energy back up with “Caught In The Middle,” the band continued to give their all for their fans. Another highlight was when Williams picked three fans named Jessy, Cameron and Danielle to come onto the stage and help the band finish “Misery Business.”
After seeing Paramore’s performance, it is safe to say that their fans will forever “still be into you.”

Photo Gallery: DadFest in Albany brings together classic cars and Rock ‘n’ Roll
Sunday, June 17, was Albany’s annual DadFest held in Washington Park. This year’s event featured a custom and classic car show by Capital Car Shows, with cars parked all around the concert field. DadFest also featured food and art vendors, along with Sly Fox and the Hustlers, Hartley’s Encore and Grand Central Station. A very hot day in the park with great music introduced by Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan also had activities such as free rock climbing wall and a bounce house and other activities for the kids.

Augie Haas Releases New Single ‘Have You Met Miss Jones’
Trumpeter Augie Haas has released “Have You Met Miss Jones,” the second single from his forthcoming album Have We Met, due to be released on July 20. Augie is one of the most in-demand trumpet players in New York, having worked with artists such as Harry Connick, Jr., The Maria Schneider Orchestra and The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and is currently a regular member of the orchestra for Aladdin on Broadway.
Augie says of the album, “I am excited, not just for the new single ‘Have You Met Miss Jones,’ but for the entire record. With time moving faster than ever, we wanted to create music that encourages people to pour a cocktail, close their eyes, and forget about life’s troubles. I’m Augie Haas; have we met?”
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Augie earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of the Performing Arts. After Chicago, he attended The University of Miami’s Frost School of Music Conservatory for a Masters in Studio Music in Jazz and a Doctorate in Musical Arts.
Augie has released four albums under his co-founded label Playtime Music: The Llama, Doing it Augie Style, Baby Jazz, and his latest album Endless, featuring all original compositions. Most recently he published his first book entitled Build Your Range.

Listen: Idan Raichel’s latest single ‘Beresheet (In the Beginning)’
Israel’s Idan Raichel, a singer-songwriter combining elements of Hebrew, Arab and Ethiopian music with 21st century electronic instruments, has released his latest song, “Beresheet (In the Beginning).” The song was written during his travels and inspired by several unexpected encounters with people from Africa and India.
The song is accompanied by a beautiful video created by the sand artist Ilana Yahav, who brings her visual interpretation of the song in a sensitive and moving way. Listen to “Beresheet (In the Beginning)” on iTunes, and learn more about the Idan Raichel Project here.

The Bowling Alley Sound release new single “The Highway State”
Post-rock band The Bowling Alley Sound have released “The Highway State,” their latest single off their label 46 West. The nine and a half minute track draws inspiration from the suburban New Jersey roots of the band and the sometimes overwhelming experience of driving on the highway in New Jersey.
On the growing highways of the Garden State, The band says “The cars are going fast, the lanes are tight, and many highways cross over each other. There is grit, and when you exit into a suburban town there is more space, verdant greenery, and places to reflect. That’s what life can be like in America: craziness and hustling around on a chaotic highway, then reflecting and relaxing after exiting that highway. This is what the band wanted to convey with this song, structurally and emotionally.”
The Bowling Alley Sound is a five piece instrumental band consisting of guitar (Mike Basil), drums (Nick Looney), bass (Andrew Capuano), violin (Isaac Rubins), and trumpet (Danny Molloy). The band was originally formed in order to bring Mike Basil’s songwriting to life in their debut record and has since been active in the northern New Jersey music scene. The Bowling Alley Sound was named a “Fresh Find” by Spotify for 2017.

Interview: A Conversation With Drum Extraordinaire Nikki Glaspie
NYS Music was blessed to sit down for a candid conversation with Nikki Glaspie, spokesperson and drummer for The Nth Power. Nikki first gained national attention drumming for Beyonce for five years. She has since worked with New Orleans powerhouse Ivan Neville in Dumpstaphunk and now has her own project, The Nth Power.
