NYS Music Presents: Live Music for December

It’s the season of giving and not only is NYS Music spotlighting a few can’t-miss shows all month long, we’re here to give you the entire run-down as well.

Syracuse – Funk ‘N Waffles

December 5 – Eliza Neals & The Narcotics will be lighting up Syracuse and it is sure to be a show you cannot miss. Eliza’s highly-praised, velvety and dynamic vocals will be accompanied by her powerhouse band for an incredible night of music. Event link.

December 6 – It’s Funk ‘N Waffles‘ 4th Anniversary and who better to celebrate this special occasion than Root Shock with the special guest Strange to Look At? These Syracuse-local acts will provide a healthy mix of reggae, soul, blues, hip hop, and ska inspired music for a night that is sure to have something for everybody. Event link.

December 8 – The celebration does not stop there, however, and the birthday party continues with the mesmerizing songwriter, guitarist and vocalist, Mihali, with special guest Chris Merkley. Event link.

December 14 – More Syracuse-native acts, Sundrop Rise and Bad Mama’s Blues Band, will be bringing soulful groove and dirty blues for the night. Event link.

December 15 – Come hang out with Miller & The Other Sinners and treat yourself to their bluesy, soulful Indie rock that will leave you wanting more. Event link.

December 16 – ExMag wants you to discover their extraordinary magnitude through the soulful, futuristic sounds they will be performing for Syracuse, joined by the funk rock experience, Skunk City. Event link.

December 20 – Mushroom Cloud is known for their explosive and organic funk-rock sound and will be bringing the energy with rap rock act, Buggin’ Out.  Event link.

December 21 – Sterling Stage Solstice Party will be packed with incredible acts including Big Sexy and The Scrambled Eggs, Old Deer Ensemble, and Moe Michnick. There will be door prizes, discount Sterling Stage ticket sales, and most important, a plethora of holiday cheer and music with energy to match.  Event link.

December 22 – The power-duo of brothers known as Balkun Brothers will be hitting the stage in Syracuse with their heavy new-age psychedelic rock and blues with “desert/stoner” rock band known as Stone Giant.  Event link.

December 28 – The West African-inspired, funky, dubbed-out psychedelic band known as Barika will be performing with indie rock group, Vintage Pretty.  Event link.

December 31st – There is no better way to ring in the new year than to kick it off with the incredible stylings of Sophistafunk at the Funk ‘N Waffles New Years Eve Party.  Event link.

Plattsburgh

December 21 – Plattsburgh Blues and Jazz has a very special holiday present for those in the area on the 21st. Award-winning Canadian artist, Angel Forrest, otherwise known as the blues goddess, or the reincarnation of Janis Joplin, will be coming with her full six piece band. NYS Presents: A November Full of Live Music

This November, we are thankful for all the incredible artists that will be rolling through the lovely state of New York and would like nothing more than to share all these shows with you. Continue reading for your monthly breakdown of all can’t-miss live music near you.

Rochester – Funk ‘N Waffles

Funk ‘N Waffles will be closing for the second half of the month of November, but before they say their short farewell, they will be packing the beginning of the month full of incredible performances.

November 7th – “Orgone delivers dirty, organic, California soul with heart music that grabs you by the collar, pulls you to your feel and shoves you wantingly onto the dance floor,” and they will performing with The English Project on the 7th. If that description does not send you running towards Funk ‘N Waffles to see them play, then I don’t know what will. Be sure to check them out! Event link.

November 9th – Hayley Jane & The Primates will be providing a soulful rock & roll music performance with vibrant stage presence that is sure to have Rochester captivated. Event link.

November 10th – Alternative country and folk artist, Todd Snider, will be taking the stage with indie swamp artist, Kevin Gordon, on the 10th. Event link.

Syracuse – Funk ‘N Waffles

November 8th – Before they hit Rochester on the 10th, come through Funk ‘N Waffles in Syracuse to see Hayley Jane & The Primates the night before for the Bob Weir After Party. Event link.

November 9th – Kuf Knotz will be bringing the hip- hop, soul and reggae sounds along with special guests, Christine Elise and Red Beard Samurai. Event link.

November 10th – As dynamic as they sound, Dynamo, the R&B, funk and jazz band will be performing with special guest Chris Eves & The New Normal. Event link.

November 11th – Sean Rowe will be bringing his alternative folk stylings and stunning voice to Syracuse along with with Mike Powell and Dana Sipos for a very special night of music. Event link.

November 13th – Zach Deputy mixes hip-hop, funk and folk, with soca and calypso, inspired by his Puerto Rican and Cruzan roots, and makes a beautiful, sunny new sound. Don’t miss this evening with him in Syracuse. Event link.

November 15th – Come feel the electricity that is the jazz rock sounds of Lil Ed & The Blue Imperials with Erin Harpe Trio when they come to Funk ‘N Waffles on the 15th. Event link.

November 17th – Big Sexy & The Scrambled Eggs will be bringing yet another night of high energy music to Syracuse, but in the stylings of psychedelic jam music. Don’t miss them as they swing through with special guest, Cypher. Event link.

November 20th – Bob Lanzetti of Snarky Puppy will be performing his mesmerizing guitar stylings with the singer-songwriter, Jean Rohe.  Event link.

November 23rd – Bendetti Band will be taking over with their rock music along with special guest, Ben Bluju.  Event link.

November 24th – The progressive Americana string band local to Central New York, Floodwood, will be joined by Pearly Baker’s Best to supply the needed dose of Grateful Dead tributes. Event link.

November 28th – G-Nome Project is what they would call, “livetronica, electro-funk, organic electronica, grilled cheese funk.” Come on out and find out for yourself! Event link.

November 30th – Project/Object’s mission is to keep the magic of Frank Zappa’s music alive through their incredible recreations. Make sure to come out and see them live. Event link.

And EVERY MONDAY NIGHT, come out for Dead Night with Pearly Baker’s Best! Music starts at 8:30 pm. And on November 26th, Dead Night will be hosting a Jam for Tots night where attendees are encouraged to bring a gift, in light of the holiday season, which will be collected by Marines to give to children around the holiday. Come out and see some great music and take the opportunity to pay it forward.

Albany

November 9th – The Ghost of Paul Revere have perfected their own genre they call “holler-folk” that is characterized by call-and-response melodies, sing-along hooks and filled to the brim with harmonies. To come see them do what they do best with special guest, Charlie Parr, come our the The Hollow Bar + Kitchen on the 9th.  Event link.

November 10th – Albany-local group Wurliday will be taking over The Hollow on the 10th and is sure to be bringing the most lively and dynamic delivery of funk, soul, and stellar songwriting. Don’t miss their performance with special guest, Dark Honey. Event link.

November 17th – Dark Star Orchestra takes on classic Grateful Dead sets but put their own twist on it with their interpretation of the musical era and improvisation. Don’t miss their performance at The Hollow on the 17th.  Event link.

November 23rd – At the Pearl St. Pub, J.E.D.I., or Jazz Electronic Dance Improvisation, and their ever-revolving band of incredible musicians will be taking the stage. Nothing says Happy Thanksgiving like some deep beats and sonic grooves. Event link.November 30th – A returning favorite group, The Lizards will be playing all the Phish music your heart could desire. Cohoes

November 14th – John Medeski’s Mad Skillet will be bringing the jazz, blues, and R&B sounds that will teleport you straight to New Orleans. Come experience their, “vast musical universe with limitless potential,” as they plan at Cohoes Music Hall.  Event link.November 23rd – Bluegrass, country and rock inspired group, Eastbound Jesus, will be returning be playing at Cohoes Music Hall for a show full of infectious energy and incredible music. NYS Music Presents: Music All October Long

As Upstate New York has officially welcomed fall and we prepare ourselves for the cold months ahead, NYS Music is preparing to keep you occupied all month long as per usual with our run down of all the can’t-miss live music for October.

Syracuse – Funk ‘N Waffles

As always, Funk ‘N Waffles will be the go-to place for music 7 days a week for Rochester and Syracuse. The calendar above outlines what can be expected this month in Syracuse. The schedule includes a healthy mix of weekly regulars, such as Pearly Baker’s Best’s Dead Nights every Monday, as well as tour performances from some of the best performers both within and outside New York State, album release parties, and of course, a Halloween celebration. October 4th – The unique strand of Americana Them Coulee Boys has created includes music for every occasion ranging from excitement and dancing to quiet thought. For a heartfelt and genuine performance, make sure to come out as they are joined by Boots ‘n Shorts.  Event link.

October 6th – Gratefully Yours’ dream team of musicians and stellar setlists make their shows a can’t miss for all Grateful Dead fans. If you need your fix, make sure to come out for their show on the 6th. Event link.

October 10th – All the way from San Diego, the psychedelic rock and world beat group, Elektric Voodoo, will be playing along with special guest and soul musician Raquel Rodriquez. Event link.

October 11th – Orlando-native, blues and jazz-inspired rock band, The Groove Orient, will be taking the stage with local favorite and psychedelic band, Astro Collective.  Event link.

October 13th – Brutal By Design Presents will be treating Syracuse to a very special tribute night. 2Pac vs. Biggie which will feature live bands playing their renditions of two of the biggest hip-hop/rap artists of all time.  Event link.

October 17th – It is sure to an incredible night full of music from New York State as Syracuse-native, and guitarist and vocalist of Root Shock, Phil Grajko performs at Funk ‘N Waffles and will be bringing along Charley Orlando for a dose of Americana, folk, and organica groove sounds. Event link.

October 18th – Enter the sonic earth of Late Earth through this performance of their indie rock and pop sound as they are joined by special guest Lucy.  Event link.

October 20th – Soulful groove and reggae rock, Syracuse-native music collective, Sundrop Rise, will be having their EP release party at Funk ‘N Waffles. Come join the group in celebrating their new music with what is sure to be an incredible performance.  Event link.

October 25th – For jazz that will speak to your soul and put a smile on your face, come out to Sammy Miller & The Congregation as they take over Funk ‘N Waffles with Major Player.  Event link.

October 26th – A Syracuse favorite and local group, Sophistafunk will be performing their funk and hip-hop sound at their 90’s Hip-Hop Halloween Party with special guest The Big Takeover. Event link.

October 27th – It’s all about the psychedelic jam bands and funky sounds as Big Sexy & The Scrambled Eggs with The Phryg and Ampevene Event link.

October 31th – It is sure to be an energized and entertaining celebration for Halloween as reggae/soul group, Root Shock, brings the Halloween Party on the 31st. Event link.

Rochester – Funk ‘N Waffles

Rochester’s Funk ‘N Waffles also will be hosting a wide variety of shows throughout October. The calendar above maps out the month and our highlights are below:

October 4th – Fresh off the release of their album “Shapeshifter II: Outbreak”, the heavy rock fusion band TAUK will be playing with psychedelic rock group, Flux Capacitor. Event link.

October 5th – Before the Grateful Dead tribute band, Gratefully Yours, makes their way to Syracuse, they will be stopping in Rochester for all the Dead Heads in the area. Event link.

October 9th – Another band that will be swinging through Rochester before they hit Syracuse will be Elektric Voodoo with Raquel Rodriquez on the 9th. Event link.

October 19th – The tribute and revival of Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black, entitled back to BACK to BLACK, will feature an opening set of originals from Remember Jones, followed by a performance of one of Amy Winehouse’s most celebrated albums alongside a 12-piece orchestra. Event link.

October 26th – Following their performance in Syracuse, Sammy Miller & The Congregation will be moving onto Rochester joined by the Gospel, blues and jam band group, Campbell Brothers.  Event link.

October 31st – Finally, the grand event for Halloween is sure to not disappoint. The show will feature southern-powerhouse and funky-soul band, ROXY ROCA, as well as Swampcandy, and Shaba Duza. Event link.

Saratoga – Putnam Place

October 4th – Putnam Place will be hosting the Enigma Festival Pre-Party at 10 PM on the 4th. Entry is 18+ and the night will feature a multitude of DJs including Evac Protocol, Kill Rex, Leila, ValDee, MurMur, Send Help, and more.  Event link.

October 6th – Power funk group, Turkuaz will be taking over Putnam Place with Butcher Brown at 9 PM. Make sure to get your tickets ahead of time and secure your spot at this full of funk night. Event link.

The Hollow Bar + Kitchen

NYS Music Presents: Live Music of September

Summer may be on its way out, but that doesn’t mean all the fun has to go with it. NYS Music is here to ensure you start off the fall months with great live music and continue it all throughout the month of September.

Salem

September 7th & 8th – The two day grassroots festival Eastbound Throwdown, presented by Eastbound Jesus, Guthrie Bell Productions and the Irwin Family will take place in Salem at the Irwin Farm on the 7th and 8th. The event will feature activities for kids, local food and beverage vendors, and a stellar lineup including Kitchen Dwellers, Girl Blue, Saints & Liars, Grassroots Rebels and two nights of Eastbound Jesus. Saratoga – Putnam Place

September 14th – To get your Phish fix, come out on the 14th to Putnam Place to see the Lizards recreate all of the classic songs of their iconic catalog.  Event link.

September 21st – Bringing another fantastic tribute to Saratoga, Start Making Sense will be recreating the full Talking Heads experience that is sure to have you strapping on your dancing shoes. Event link.

September 22nd – Singer-songwriter Ryan Montbleau will be bringing a very special full band performance to Saratoga featuring songs from his latest album I Was Just Leaving. The performance is sure to be full of the emotive and raw energy the album has been highly acclaimed for. Event link.

September 8th – Donny Frauenhofer and NYS Music are bringing you the Psychedelic Disco Party featuring the original jazz-fusion supergroup themselves, Donny Frauenhofer Band, the funk-based and indie-inspired group Witty Tarbox, and the groovy stylings of Our Friends Band.  Event link.

NYS Presents: Live Music For Your August

As with every year, the beautiful summer months have flown by so far and here at New York State Music, we are determined to make sure you make the most out of the sunshine left. If you are looking to pack the whole month of August with unforgettable live music performance at great venues throughout New York, look no further than this cheat-sheet of all the upcoming action.

Buffalo – Nietzche’s

Nietzche’s has been beating those Monday blues all summer long by making Happy Hour a lot more jazzy for Buffalo. If you have not made your way to Jazz Happy Hour this summer, be sure to get there before August is over.

August 6th – Well-rounded vocalist Kristen Smigielski will be treating the crowd at the first Happy Hour of the month to her true forte: jazz. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to see one of Buffalo’s best. Event link.

August 13th – No strangers to the New York State jazz scene, Dejesus and Warne Trio will be bringing their bluesy jazz style on the second Monday of the month.  Event link.

August 8th – For a night full of smiles and good vibes, Kendall Street Company will be stopping by on their Summer Tour at Funk ‘N Waffles along with Vintage Pretty. For fans of psychedelic, alternative and jam rock music and beyond, this show is sure to be a can’t miss event.  Event link.

August 9th – Handmade Moments will be bringing their rich, musical flavor of alternative folk music, paired with the diversely beautiful, “no rules,” sounds of the up and coming duo, Dizzy Heart. Event link.

August 14th – The New Daze is reuniting for one night and one night only to revive their “organic psychedelic rage,’ for all those who have missed it so much. Make sure to make it out for this electrified performance as they are joined by Kansas Wine. Event link.

August 16th – Delivering the sounds of the South right to your friendly neighborhood Upstate New York venue is just what The Prestage Brothers Band will be doing on the 16th of August. Event link.

August 23rd – It is bound to be a packed night of out of this world music as alternative blues group, Late Earth, performs accompanied by the experimental sounds of The U.S. Americans, as well as Cosmonaut Radio.Event link.

August 25th – Brownskin Band and Joe Driscoll will be taking over Syracuse’s Funk ‘N Waffles for a night that honors American folk in the funkiest way possible. Event link.

August 29th – Mungo’s List covers it all and is sure to have a sound that will please fans of every genre from jam, to jazz, to soul, to maybe more niche interests such as “spacey,” music as well as, “spooky,” music. 6-piece funk band, Butter, will also be coming along to ensure that the funk is spread as much as possible to attendees of this sure to be memorable show. August 22nd – Joe Marcinek All Star Super Jam is every last bit of fun that it sounds like it will be. As every one of their performances features different artists, this Rochester show will include Alan Evans of Soulive, Steve Molitz of Particle and members Freekbass. Event link.

August 28th – To bring a healthy dose of reggae and blues for the month, Aaron Kamm and the One Drops will be performing with special guest Delilah Jones. Event link.

July 13th – A lot of exciting things are happening with one of our favorite Upstate New York-local bands, Formula 5, and included on this list is the fact that they will be hosting the second annual Rock the Dock Festival in Lake George. The festival will be held on the dock of the Lake George Steamboat Company and will host a multitude of other great acts including Soule Monde, Strange Machines and Let’s Be Leonard. Saranac Lake – The Waterhole

The historic Waterhole in Saranac Lake welcomes West End Blend for ‘The Blender’ – a two night affair with Bella’s Bartok as special guest on Friday, July 13, and a tribute to Prince with WEB on Saturday, July 14. Hearing Aide: The Sea the Sea ‘From The Light’

A lot has changed for The Sea the Sea since the release of their first album, Love We Are We Love in 2014. The debut album received high praise for its folk-acoustic basis that allowed the beautiful vocals of the original duo, what Huffington Post refers to as, “two of the loveliest male-female voices you might ever hear this or any other year,” to truly shine. The same praise is just as easily applicable to their sophomore album, From The Light, which certainly does not disappoint on the vocals. The band, originally an acoustic-folk duo act featuring Chuck and Mira Costa, has grown to now include Cara May Gorman on vocals and synthesizer, and Stephen Struss on drums and percussion.

This album stays true to their folk roots, but shows how their sound has matured by adding a whole new spectacular layer of production and instrumentation that serves not to hide, but compliments their stunning vocals even more. With the group’s introduction of reverb-heavy electric guitars, the dream-like production done by Troy Pohl, and by lacing almost every line with their signature harmonies, making every coming one as chillingly beautiful as the last, this album is a piece of art through and through, and is certainly a display of their musical growth as a group.

The opening track, “Everybody,” is the perfect invitation for the listener to enter this album. Opening with mesmerizing swirling sounds, as soon as the vocals join this dream sequence in stunning harmony, the song practically extends a hand connecting the musicians with the listener. The lyrics immediately dive into the album’s themes of the duality of human nature, accepting our differences, and fostering positivity times amidst hard times that the group explores. It addresses the inescapable human fallibility we all face as somebody in this population of “everybody.” The hypnotizing simplicity of the piece transforms as the sound thickens. Percussion is layered onto a quicker beat, and an electric guitar takes center stage before the song strips back down to it’s original simplicity. Without a hiccup, it then leads right into the next song, one of the notable singles off the album, “Bang Bang Bang.” “Everybody” is a stunning opener and preview of what is to come from the album. It shares the driving questions, has the dreamy production highlighted in other songs such as “All Go Right,” and hints at more upbeat songs like “Phototrophic.”

The title track, “From the Light,” takes it’s time building up, layering sound on top of sound, with the reverb allowing each to swim between your ears in anticipation for the next addition. Starting off with simple percussion and working it’s way into an explosion of instrumentation and vocals. The repeating lyrics circle back, creating a beautiful push and pull dynamic between good and bad, mimicking the tendency to sway back and forth between the two within human nature.

The ballad “Good for Something,” was inspired by Chuck’s grandfather’s often repeated mantra stated in the above quote, which is now immortalized within the lyrics of the song. The echoing melodic guitar and lyrics make this track a stand out song on the album and a happy ending to the story the album tells: focusing on the positive even in trying and confusing circumstances.

For as much as the sound itself is a breath of fresh air, so is the obvious social commentary throughout From the Light and the optimistic outlook it takes on recognizing that we are all human, but ultimately choosing to focus on the good in that.

The Upstate New York-local band will be kicking off their summer tour by giving New York State the pleasure of hosting their album release party. NYS Music Presents: Live Shows to Occupy Your April

April is finally here, and as Upstate New York finally begins to thaw, the live music scene across the state is certainly heating up. If you are looking for live music to keep you entertained throughout the entire upcoming month, look no further. Just like every other month, NYS is here to give you a run-down on every can’t-miss show in New York State.

Syracuse – Funk N’ Waffles

April 12th – The trio that makes up The Last Revel has somehow found the magic combination that produces natural and delicate folk music but still delivers rocking “bombastic” performances. April 13th – At the Music Hall at Funk ‘N Waffles, Martin Sexton will be doing a special performance sure to draw emotions from the crowd with the use of his tenor voice or flawless displays of his falsetto, as well as an energetic response through his raspy and blues-inspired vocalization.
