  • Hearing Aide: Lakecia Benjamin “Rise Up”

Lakecia BenjaminLakecia Benjamin is a funk, jazz, and R&B artist from New York City. She is best known for her own recorded saxophone work and her group Soul Squad. She has also performed with other great names including Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Clark Terry, and many more.

Her latest album titled, Rise Up, comes to us from the New York label Ropeadope. The LP features 13 tracks of a funk and jazz fusion led by Lakecia’s voice and her Alto Saxophone. The lyrics span a variety of topics but there is a clear focus on social justice and particularly the issues facing the African American community.

In opening jam, “March On,” Lakecia’s vocals and instrumentation command your attention and set a poignant tone for what is to come. Track two, “On The One” keeps up the momentum, but adds smooth male vocals for a different flavor; of course Lakecia continues to flourish with her evocative saxophone. After a thoughtful and meaningful lull in the middle, the album turns it back on with the song “Little Children.”

The powerful record not only calls people to arms, but it also offers encouragement to those who have already joined the fight. It’s tracks like “Takeback” that Lakecia is able to say so much, without actually “saying” very much at all; her saxophone screaming at the top of its lungs, heavy undulating bass and drums marching forward, and a complete atmosphere of power holding it all together. Perhaps the most urgent and evocative track from the album is “Little Children,” which harkens back to the blistering pace and utter catharsis of “Sinnerman” from Nina Simone.

Lakecia’s saxophone playing has intensity and poise. Benjamin manages to sew together lead riffs that bring the songs a strong cohesiveness, while also taking the audience on a more personal journey during her improvisations. The instrumentation is akin to the work of Kamasi Washington and the work he did with Kendrick Lamar on To Pimp a Butterfly, but with Lakecia’s own unmistakable style.

For all things Lakecia Benjamin, find your way to her website. The album will be available on bandcamp, and iTunes come March 23.

  • YACHT Docks at The Great Scott in Boston

On January 15, dace-pop trio YACHT took the stage in front of an uncharacteristically enthusiastic crowd of Monday-nighters at The Great Scott in Boston, MA. The show began with an ominous tome from a synthesizer and a short recorded monologue before lead singer Claire L. Evans shot across the stage and smashed any early expectations of a quiet evening to pieces.

However, before YACHT got down with everybody, local R&B man Ed Balloon and his band got the small bar up to speed with a buoyant and athletic performance. Before his final number, Ed taught the audience some crowd harmonies, “she’ll be poppin’ it, poppin’ it,” that got most everyone moving and singing along.

YACHT’s opening number of the evening, “Night Crawler,” was a distinctive and undulating track that seemed to also be a crowd favorite. The track had danceability, but it had clear punk roots, especially sung in Claire’s sassy and dramatic vocals. With the second track, “Trap Karaoke,” Claire took a step down from the stage to join the crowd on their level and even offered the microphone to some of the hardcore fans who were singing along with every word.

The rest of YACHT’s performance bounded up and down with strong synth leads, consistent four to the floor beats and a powerful vocal performance from Claire. Jona Becholt, the groups founder, spent most of his time behind the synthesizer and trigger pads with Rob Kieswetter, but he made the occasional dive to the front with a microphone in hand to back up Claire. At times the songs blended together, but overall, there was a a consistent ebb and flow to the performance.

What the music lacked in variability, Claire made up for with her wild performance, theatrics with the band, and her powerful comments including calls of, “Femininity is a a prison and we all know it!” and “The apocalypse is coming, it’s not a question of if at this point, it’s only a question of when!” to which the crowd shouted back their approval. The show proved to be a point of true levity for the fans to begin their weeks with.

  • YACHT Does The Great Scott on January 15

On Monday, January 15, Los Angeles based dance-pop trio YACHT will be hitting The Great Scott in Allston, MA with their rhythmic and focused tunes. The concert is an 18+ event, tickets are $15 at Great Scott Boston and the doors open at 8:30 pm. The group is kicking off 2018 with as twelve-date tour in support of their most recent EP, Strawberry Moon.

YACHT The Great ScottYACHT began as the solo project of Jona Bechtolt, a musician and multimedia artist who dropped out of high school in the 90s to play drums in a touring punk band. In the early 2000s, he brought his DIY sensibility to laptop production, partnering with vocalist Khaela Maricich to release two albums with The Blow, a wonky pop group that gained a loyal following after 2006’s breakout Paper Television.

YACHT transformed from a solo project to a duo with the addition of writer Claire L. Evans, who was on board for their critically-acclaimed album See Mystery Lights, named “Best New Music” by Pitchfork and a “Critic’s Choice” by the New York Times in 2009. The pair have collaborated closely since, forming the nucleus of a nervy and experimental live band which has expanded and contracted on tours with LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Vampire Weekend, M83 and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

You can check out their music here and follow them on their journey via Twitter. If you do not get the chance to see them in Boston, check out one of these other shows:
