While her talent was called \u201cunfair\u201d by Blake Shelton and she\u2019s currently being mentored by Miley Cyrus<\/a> on NBC\u2019s \u201cThe Voice,\u201d her fifth grade music teacher, Camille Wing remembers Moriah Formica before she became the rock star she is today.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was very quiet,\u201d Wing said.<\/p>\n

Her talents on guitar were a secret until the chorus was preparing for a concert. Some of Formica\u2019s friends mentioned to Wing that Formica could play \u201cEye of the Tiger,\u201d a song they were rehearsing, on the guitar.<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked her if she would be willing to bring her guitar in and play it for us,\u201d Wing said. \u201cHer dad brought it in before school and she played it perfectly. She definitely knew what she was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"Wing asked Formica to lend her ability at many points after that. Formica accompanied her sixth grade chorus in \u201cStray Cat Strut,\u201d and then sang a \u201cbeautiful\u201d rendition of Alicia Keys\u2019 \u201cFallin\u2019.\u201d Formica was even asked to sing a solo at her eighth grade graduation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t asked many people to [sing solos],\u201d Wing said.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to now, and Formica is a strong contender on season 13 of \u201cThe Voice.\u201d Her blind audition performance of \u201cCrazy on You\u201d by Heart got the attention of all four judges, ultimately earning her a coveted spot on Team Miley Cyrus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose to play Heart because it is classic rock,\u201d Formica said. \u201cOne of the reasons why I decided to go on to \u2018The Voice\u2019 is because of the lack of true rock singers. Ann Wilson is one of my favorite vocalists.\u201d<\/p>\n

Formica has powered through each week of \u201cThe Voice\u201d so far, impressing the judges with her range and vocal control. Despite the success, she\u2019s still at Shaker High School, taking classes and moving on with her education.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cI\u2019m truly enjoying all of this, but it\u2019s so much work,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u00a0have school all day, but then I come home and there are so many opportunities that I have to address. I don\u2019t like ignoring anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her father and manager, Josh Formica, agrees with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes it\u2019s hard for her. She gets home from school and I have to ask the typical dad questions\u2014\u2018how was your day,\u2019 \u2018did you learn anything,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cBut then I have to follow up with things like \u2018you have 120 really nice comments that you should probably check out,\u2019 or \u2018we have received an opportunity from here, what would you like to do?\u2019 I then have to transition back into dad mode and make sure she\u2019s getting her homework done and keeping up with school stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luckily, Formica said that the school has been supportive of this journey since the beginning. They have helped the tutors get whatever material they needed and made sure that Formica\u2019s education stays as steady as possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cSchool definitely gets in the way sometimes, but I could not be more grateful for the support of Shaker and what they\u2019ve done for me since the beginning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

North Colonie Central School District Superintendent Joseph Corr said Formica\u2019s work ethic is indicative of what the district hopes to instill in its students.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile Moriah has such tremendous natural talent, I don\u2019t think people realize the amount of time and work that goes on behind the scenes. She works so hard and we are very proud of her,\u201d Corr said. \u201cWe watch \u2018The Voice\u2019 every week and root her on. She\u2019s our hometown hero. Watching her perform with such power at only 16-years-old is so inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaker High School Principal Richard Murphy said Shaker has felt the craze around Formica\u2019s newfound fame.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoriah has always been known for her voice, so it wasn\u2019t a surprise to see this happen,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cShe is a humble, polite young lady and it\u2019s nice to see her get attention. It\u2019s created a buzz in our school and it\u2019s wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Formica said her musical influences include Aerosmith, Evanescence, Halestorm and In This Moment. She has met Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, who Formica said was supportive. While she\u2019s met a few members of Evanescence, she has yet to meet lead singer Amy Lee. She hopes to meet Steven Tyler someday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAerosmith was my first true love,\u201d she said. \u201cMy room is called Aeroville because of how many posters I have around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although she won\u2019t know the results of \u201cThe Voice\u201d until the rest of the world does in November, Formica said that a loss will not deter her from making music.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will continue doing what I\u2019m doing; I want to make music, perform, release albums,\u201d she said. \u201c\u2018The Voice\u2019 has given me the exposure that I need to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the proudest people of all? The ones who have coached her along the way.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoriah comes alive when she performs,\u201d Wing said. \u201cShe has that special something that I believe will carry her far and make her dreams come true.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I am thoroughly enjoying seeing it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her father agrees.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s been performing, and I\u2019ve been managing her, since she was 12,\u201d he said. \u201cSeeing her have this huge stage is incredibly validating and rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n
