  • Hearing Aide: Chris Eves and The New Normal ‘Find Your Way’

    Chris Eves and The New Normal debut their album Find Your Way this Friday night, December 22 at Funk n Waffles in downtown Syracuse, and on a busy night of Christmas parties and shows, its a must-see show given the prowess shown on this release. Recorded, produced and mastered at More Sound Studios in Syracuse by The New Normal and Andrew Greacen, this homegrown album and band sound ready to deliver in a live setting.

    Opening tracks “Remember to Forget” and “Green and Blue” show off the guitar work of Jay Lock, with the latter a stand out track on the album, truly soaring to height after height. “Walking on a Wire” is light and poppy in a Dave Matthews/Dispatch way, down to the built in crowd sing along. “Find Your Way” – all eight minutes of it – is a journey of a song, with peaks and valleys with an Assembly of Dust vibe throughout, down to Mike D’Ambrosio’s keys, which shine even more on “On Rainy Days.”

    The album doesn’t have a lull or soft spot, and halfway through there’s a steady rock groove that gets harder with “The Chains You Wear,” with an early Soundgarden vibe.  “Fall” is the hardest rocking track, bringing to mind moe.’s “McBain” and “George” amid an accelerated raging first half and a mellow reflective second one that turns up with Bayliss/Cinninger-esque guitar licks. Eves’ vocals are a treat throughout the album – like a diamond in the rough of jam band vocalists – notably, on the soul-extending “New Normal” and song of longing that closes the album, “Flown Away.”

    Most tracks clock in between 4-6 minutes, giving a sign that these songs will stretch out much further in a live setting. After a few listens to the album, two things are apparent: Find Your Way is a debut album with shine and depth, and The New Normal might be the best new band out of Syracuse.

  • Dana Fuchs Perseveres Because Love Lives On

    Dana Fuchs has built a loyal following in central New York, based on her energetic performances at the New York State Blues Festival and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que over the past half decade. That made her a popular choice for a NYS Blues Festival fundraiser appearance Friday, December 1 at Funk N Waffles in downtown Syracuse.

    Her most loyal fans are familiar with Fuchs’ songbook and a few of their requests were granted during the evening. This included a rarely played tune as a tribute to an unnamed member of the Syracuse music community unable to attend due to serious illness. The notion of overcoming hardship or loss is a common theme in Fuchs’ songs as well as in the title of her upcoming release, Love Lives On. Throughout the set, she revealed details about herself and her family’s lives. While doing so in the club setting, it felt as though she was connecting to both old and new fans in a manner that other performers don’t often achieve. During one intro, she spoke of her own astonishing personal loss of both parents and three siblings over a short span, and how that loss was a basis for the captivating “Calling Angels.” This song featured Craig Dreyer on saxophone, in addition to his usual keyboard duties, and was one of the highlights of a memorable night of music.

    While Fuchs displayed elements of many different styles, from blues to soul to gospel and even R&B at times, she is most decidedly known for her powerful voice and commanding stage presence during dynamic rock songs. Still, perhaps her best moments this particular evening were during the somewhat quieter pieces, including a poignant duet with her longtime songwriting collaborator Jon Diamond on guitar, “Keep On Rollin,” and the heartfelt “Faithful Sinner.” She and Diamond also displayed resilience in working around some technical difficulties in order to deliver the country blues tune “Nothing On My Mind.” Fuchs will return to touring next year in support of her pending 2018 release, Love Lives On, which can be pre-ordered here.

    Fuchs mentioned that the drummer, Santo Rizzolo, was playing his very first show with the band and that the bass player, Brian Gearty, was fairly new to the ensemble as well. She made a point to thank them for stepping in and stepping up in order to help keep things rolling for her and the rest of the band. And roll they did, as Fuchs closed the show with some thunderous vocals on her own “Keep On Walking” and a blistering version of The Beatles’ “Helter Skelter,” much to the appreciation of an attentive and enthusiastic crowd.

    Fuchs will return to Syracuse next summer when she and her band perform at the New York State Blues Festival, held in Syracuse’s Clinton Square July 12-14, 2018. You’d be wise to make plans to see Dana Fuchs and her band, whether it be again or for the very first time.

  • Cait Devin Returns to Funk n Waffles

    Cait Devin will once again grace the stage of Funk ‘n Waffles Downtown on Friday, Dec. 8 from 6-8 p.m. The 16-year-old singer/songwriter from Westmoreland got her start at open mikes, like the one at Funk ‘n Waffles. Now she’s playing shows throughout the Central New York region, performing a mix of indie pop originals and classic rock covers. You can also catch Cait solo on Dec. 9 at the Villa Verona Vineyard and Bistro in Verona and with her band Triple Threat at Copper City Brewing Company in Rome on Dec. 28.

  • Doctor Pocket to Celebrate Reunion at Funk ‘n Waffles with Band of Heroes and James Adamo

    Doctor Pocket will celebrate their 15 year reunion show at Funk n Waffles in Syracuse on July 22, joined by James Adamo and Band of Heroes. In their 90s heyday, Doctor Pocket was one of the loudest and tightest rock bands in Central New York, with a solid following and the timeless live release Live at the Legendary Hungry Charley’s.

    Doctor Pocket draws on a variety of influences, including Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Queen, The Allman Brothers, The Black Crowes and many more, and with these influences they melded together a deep sound with layered melodies that engage the audience fully; when they get into a pocket, they stay dialed in and keep rocking.

    Guitarists Jim Adamo and Tom Binasco are rock guitarists in sync as they create grooves and have the powerful rhythm section of drummer Matt Belardinelli and bassist Brett Hobin (Syracuse bass veteran Steve Winston served as original bassist for DP). Combined, they are a mature rock band with Josh Farrell leading the charge on vocals with an inviting, resonating voice that brings the listener on a rock trip. The July 22 reunion show at Funk n Waffles starts at 9pm (doors at 8) and admission is $10 or $15 under 21. Don’t miss this show Syracuse!

  • Funk n Waffles is Coming to Rochester, Closing Original SU Hill Location

    Update: The original location of Funk ‘N Waffles, located on the SU Hill in the original home of Hungry Charlie’s, will be closing on Wednesday, February 22. The downtown location will remain open. In a statement on the venue’s Facebook page, owner Adam Gold said:

    It is with a heavy heart that after 10 years of great food, delicious coffees, wonderful people, fun times, hard work, ups and downs, (and a few open mic nights thrown into the mix), Funk ‘n Waffles owner Adam Gold announces the closing of the restaurant’s original location on the SU Hill (727 S Crouse Ave). This has been difficult for us as a staff, however we are left with no choice as the building block is being torn down.

    Funk ‘N Waffles is heading west on I-90 this spring. The Syracuse business has leased the former Water Street Music Hall, bringing their delicious menu and concert calendar with them.

    Owner Adam Gold, also of Sophistafunk, posted the following message on Facebook this morning:

    Hello Rochester! If you haven’t already heard, I’m really proud to announce that we are opening Funk ‘n Waffles 3 in Rochester very soon at the old Water Street Music Hall!!! We’ll be open all day every day serving up the same funky menu, and there will be live music 7 days a week! We are really excited to be a part of Rochester’s growing St. Paul Quarter!

    Rochester has a few venues for up and coming bands – 3 Heads Brewing, Flour City Station and Montage Music Hall – but the closing of Water Street Music Hall in the past few years last left a void in the Rochester scene, as local bands cannot move directly into the 900 capacity Anthology without stepping up into a mid-sized venue the size of the Funk ‘N Waffles at the old Water Street Music Hall. The musical history of the building and central location would serve the area well as a future Funk ‘N Waffles.

  • Hearing Aide: Phantom Chemistry “Everything’s Great!”

    Local Syracuse, NY group Phantom Chemistry release their fourth full-length album, “Everything’s Great!” on Friday, January 13. This rock band stays true to their genre with the prominent use of electrical guitar and drums in most every song. The 13-track album includes songs such as “Waste” and “Hospital” that build on the very real subject matter the band tackles in previous albums.

    The album opens with “Dream in the Dark” portraying a darker tone seen in some of the latter songs on the album. It ends with “Come Watch TV,” a noticeably longer song that carries a melodious feel.

    Scattered throughout the album are songs including “Extension 23” being an interesting and upbeat take sung from the perspective of a male prostitute as well as an “Ode to Die Hard” – yes, the movie. It also features “Shades of Blue,” a song that carries a different mood from the others. The audible harmonies at the beginning of this song in addition to its lighter feel help to juxtapose the heavy material expressed lyrically.

    Throughout this album, Phantom Chemistry takes their listeners on a musical journey that reflects day-to-day realities as they embrace even the ugly bumps in the road we ca
    ll life. The band is excited to showcase their new music at their upcoming album release show this Friday, January 13 at Funk N Waffles (Clinton St).

  • Marco Benevento Kickstarts the New Year with Album and Show Announcements

    Marco Benevento is set to blastoff in 2017 with a new album and tour on tap. The multi-instrumentalist dubbed the Mad Hatter will start the year spinning forty-fives for an intimate hometown get down at the Catskill Mountain Pizza Company in Woodstock, NY on January 7. Teaming up with music journalist Brian Turk, the event is called Brian Turk and Mr. D present “I’m a DJ Too,” and will feature tasty pizza and beer from the Catskill Brewery, not to mention a set of fresh cuts straight from Marco’s head to the floor.     Later in the month, Benevento will launch a tour in support of the Feb. 17 release of The Woodstock Sessions, a new live album recorded last September at Applehead Studios. The first show will take place on Jan. 30 at Funk ‘n Waffles Downtown in Syracuse. Local Grateful Dead tribute act, Pearly Baker’s Best, will open.
