  • Lespectacle VII: Happy Hallo-CHEEN…

    For the past six years during the Autumnal Equinox in late September, what has been described by hosing band Lespecial as a “Pagan inspired multi-media mini-fest” has taken place.  After making its rounds at various venues in both Boston and New York, Lespectacle VII landed at one of the top music clubs in the country, Brooklyn Bowl, which Rolling Stone ranked the venue 20th in the nation in 2013.

    lespectacle VIIThis year the “psychedelic, haunted circus” not only featured stage design provided by The Reliquarium, a multi-media light and visual show from Vin Pugliese, and was boasting the best lineup of musical acts the mini-fest has seen yet, it was also moved to be held on October, 31… Halloween night. Oh, and did I mention Lespecial would be taking the opportunity to release their second studio album, Cheen? Trick or Treat Lespecialists… Happy Hallo-CHEEN!

    Supporting acts included Dallas’s “The Funky Knuckles,” New York’s own Horizon Wireless, as well as a set from Oakland California’s legendary hip-hop act Zion I with non other than your hosts Lespecial as the backing band. That collaboration first came about with a set at The Great North Music Festival. After working with Zion I, Lespecial decided to feature the MC on the 4th track of the new album titled “Sound That We Do.”  The set at Lespectacle 7 was the second time the cross-genre on-stage collaboration took place. Luke Bemand’s heavy bass and Jonathan Grusauskas’ sampled sounds and synth-scapes lend themselves well to the prolific word flow Zion I has been bringing to the stage since the early 2000’s.

    As for the new sophomore studio album, Cheen, we find a band unafraid to challenge the concepts of traditional genres. They have taken a step further in refining their style by not adhering to the preconceived notions of what that style should be. In fact there is hardly a genre this album doesn’t touch. They have become known for their metal/funk mash up sound on tracks like “Skull Kid” featuring samples of Jack Nicholson as the  Joker in the Tim Burton’s 1989 film Batman, and the Primus-esque “American Apocalypse”  However the track “Stolen Land” brings in a roots-rock/dub sound, and tracks like “Sounds That We Do” and “Donut Ghost House I” and “Donut Ghost House II” bring a hip-hop sound to the album. It’s as if someone said “It’s all been done before” and Lepecial said “Then let’s just do it all.” Spotify player below.

  • With This Album I Thee Wed: Hayley Jane and the Primates Album Release Show

    It was an evening of milestones and memories on a Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Brooklyn Bowl. Before Hayley Jane and the Primates took to the stage to celebrate the release of their new studio album We’re Here Now, Primates bassist Josh Carter married his fiancé Kristen Detroia under a Stealie-style chuppah in front of family, friends, fans and Brooklyn bowlers alike. “She’s a summer love in the spring, fall and winter. She can make happy any man alive…” venue owner Pete Shapiro echoed the words of Robert Hunter and Bob Weir before inviting Dopapod front man and longtime friend of the couple Rob Compa to share the story of how the two met some ten years ago.

    Hayley Jane And The Primates Following the off the cuff and personal tails of Compa, Shapiro oversaw the vows and pronounced the couple husband and wife. Josh and Kristen Carter kissed, broke glass, and then remembered to exchange rings at the end. The crowed cheered at the completion of the nontraditional, public, and yet adequately personal, Brooklyn Bowl wedding ceremony. Shapiro encouraged the crowd as he and the wedding party walked off the stage, “Now lets rock!” And just like that, the world was introduced to the opening act for the evening, The Brooklyn Bowl Wedding All-stars. Keeping up with the friends and family feeling of the evening Dopapod’s Eli Winderman and Rob Compa, Pink Talking Fish’s Richard James, and Kung Fu’s Adrian Tramontano and Chris DeAngelis madeup the wedding band to end all wedding bands. They formed a funk fueled five-some covering everything from Stevie Wonder to The Rolling Stones, and even invited Primates guitarist Justin Hancock to join them for The Allman Brothers Band’s “Blue Sky.”

    With the night already full of high points the stage had yet to be graced with its evening’s headliner. Hayley Jane and the Primates were welcomed by the Brooklyn City crowd with great excitement and anticipation. The set highlighted the bands new album and spanned their versatility. Along with soaring guitar solos, intricate bass lines, and steady drumbeats Hayley Jane’s soulful voice and colorful lyrics filled the room. The Interstellar Dancers added an interpretative dance flare backing up the front woman’s signature choreography.

    Of course the evening would not be complete without a series of on stage collaborations. Rob Compa was first to join adding his stylings to the sixth track off of the album”We’re here Now” titled “You Gotta Move.” Up next were two of Hayley’s friends from the band’s hometown of Boston on steel drums and percussion. They added to the reggae sounds of  “Man Acrylic.” Eli Winderman jumped back on the organ and surprise guest Elise Testone stood along side Hayley Jane for a vocal jam on the track “Make It Alright.” A few songs later another appearance by Richard James on the last two songs “Hey Mister” and “Hurricane Jane” would close out the set.

    As Hayley Jane and the Primates walked off, the city that never sleeps met the empty stage with chants for one more song. They would acquiesce and then some. The first of the two song encore “To the Moon” was a slower ballad brought to life by Jane’s glowing personality and glowing moon prop she held in hand throughout the song. The second song of the encore, and final song of the night, featured every guest the stage had featured for the event.  It amounted to a sixteen person (including dancers) “I Can Do It (Poo Jam).” The audience chanted along “I know that I can do it…” as the wedding/friends and family reunion/album release show came to its end. It was truly a special and unique night at Brooklyn Bowl summed up best by the words of Hayley Jane herself, “What a lucky bunch of creatures who can run around and dance if we want.”

  • JRAD Performs Full Terrapin Suite at Fall Ball, Welcomes Stuart Bogie

    Capping off the third show of their first weekend at Brooklyn Bowl this October, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (JRAD) dialed into their interpretation of the music of the Grateful Dead, with a full “Terrapin Station” suite, and welcomed multi-instrumentalist Stuart Bogie to the stage for a good chunk of the show.

    JRAD terrapinA first set that started out with an “I Need a Miracle” > “New Speedway Boogie” > “Playin’ in the Band” sequence that took the band on a 45 minute rockin’ ride, with a spacey jazz odyssey inside PITB. “Eyes of the World” featured Stuart Bogie on saxophone, aptly filling the role of Branford Marsalis on the live version found on Without a Net. Marco Benevento, Dave Dreiwitz, Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger all took a turn at the helm, everyone steering the ship in their own way, before settling back into safe harbor. “Dancing in the Street” and “Brown Eyed Woman” closed out the set, the latter with a brief “Eyes of the World” reprise and a “Stella Blue” tease/jam at the end.

    “Uncle John’s Band” kicked off a 4-song second set with Bogie on flute, later switching to sax for “The Other One” which included jams on “Cryptical Envelopment,” “Roadhouse Blues” and “How Many More Times” before a long segue into the full Terrapin Station suite which found Bogie on clarinet for the lengthy composition. An encore of “Samson and Delilah” with Bogie once again closed out a warm, full night and enticed fans heading to this weekend’s 3-night run at Brooklyn Bowl.

  • Space Carnival to Headline Brooklyn Bowl in October

    One of our own 87/90 bands Space Carnival is headlining Brooklyn Bowl on Tuesday, October 24!

    Space Carnival blends high-energy disco, funk, and progressive rock into an interplanetary performance. Formed in Spring 2013, Space Carnival consists of Jeremy Kraus on Guitar, Cameron Fitch on Keys and Vocals, Chris Meier on Bass, and Nick Tassinari on drums. The quartet began honing their live sound when they launched into the Oneonta music scene in Fall of 2013. Space Carnival keeps a consistent, fun, and fresh energy by rotating set lists, adding covers and confidently debuting original material. This four piece is sure to have you dancing with their form of loose funk and relentless slippery disco.

  • JRAD Announces Extensive Fall Tour, Including 10+ East Coast Dates

    During an absolute barrage of topnotch shows and tours coming up this fall, one revelation proves to be the most stirring.  Joe Russo’s Almost Dead have carved more than a niche for themselves in the current jam rock landscape, and it’s reflected in their unbelievable ticket sales and current momentum.  Joe and the boys gained some real notoriety over the summer, playing and arranging the Dead’s music in a genuinely awe inspiring style at several festival dates including Peach Festival and two nights of Lockn, as well as a sold out two-night run at the Capitol Theater.  Beginning in October, the RADness will continue with six sold out dates at the Brooklyn Bowl, with the first run being Oct. 5-7 and the second weekend being the 12-14.  Following later that month will be a pre-party for Hulaween Festival down at Suwannee in Florida.  After a brief west coast sabbatical, JRAD will be back in late November for several more sold out bangers in Philadelphia and Boston.     Having already seen over 10 JRAD shows this year, nothing excites me more than a proper tour just over the horizon.  Call ’em a cover band all you want; they’re playing the Dead’s music better than any touring band in the scene is playing their own music currently.  The quartet is beyond a force to be reckoned with.

  • The Brooklyn Bowl and Brewery in Contract for $37.4 Million

    The Atlas Capital Group is looking to ‘strike’ a deal with the Williamsburg Building owners which houses the Brooklyn Bowl and Brewery. According to The Real Deal, ACG’s intentions are not entirely clear, but they are likely to,  “eventually reposition it.”

    The real estate group will not make a move until at least 2021- that is when the lease for the Brooklyn Bowl expires and the brewery adjacent to it is set until 2025. It is unclear as of now, but ACG will likely want both parts of the property and will not take action until the latter date. More information is still to come.

    Jam Base spoke with co-owner Peter Shapiro who said, “In terms of the story nothing changes for us. We hope to be 61 Wythe Avenue [the current location] for a long time.”

    The Bowl has been a hot spot for fans and bands of all sizes since 2009. It’s held acts such as Guns N’ Roses, Elvis Costello, the Roots to just recently, the auction of Jerry Garcia’s famed guitar, ‘Wolf’.

  • Jerry Garcia’s ‘Wolf’ Crosses Auction Block for $1.6 Million

    Any Dead fanatic would recognize this guitar – Wolf was built by Doug Irwin in 1972, played by Jerry Garcia on and off until 1993, was sold to philanthropist Daniel Pritzker in 2002, who just let it roll through an auction at the Brooklyn Bowl for almost $2 million.

    jerry wolfThe guitar sold for $1.6 million with a buyer’s premium of $300,000 on top of a dollar for dollar match from an anonymous organization, meaning the Southern Poverty Law Center received $3.2 million form the auction. The SPLC is an organization, “dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to [seek] justice for the most vulnerable members of our society.”

    Pritzker said, “I’ve been a fan of the Dead since I was a kid, and playing this iconic guitar over the past 15 years has been a privilege. But the time is right for Wolf to do some good.”

    jerry wolfWolf saw action across the globe in the hands of Jerry Garcia, from New York to the Great Pyramids of Egypt. It was recognized for Garcia’s love of the instrument, the devilish cartoon-like wolf engraved below the bridge and the effort that went into making it.

  • Breaking Biscuits in the Bowl

    Brooklyn Bowl, the iconic music haven in the heart of Williamsburg, served up some delicious sounds last weekend, courtesy of a mashup of two giants in the jamtronica world.  Breaking Biscuits is the name of this super group which is comprised of Aron Magner (keys) and Marc Brownstein (bass) of Disco Biscuits fame alongside renowned drummer Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee (keys) who together form Break Science, an emerging force all their own.  As a sparse crowd of people took their hacks on the bowling lines on the other side of the room, the dance floor was full of attentive listeners and dancers enjoying everything this uber talented side project had to offer.

    Breaking Biscuits in the BowlThe show featured two opening acts in Upright Man, a relatively new act formed in the halls of NYU’s music school, and Space Bacon.  The latter of which was an ideal choice for an opener as the Disco Biscuits influence was palpable in some impressive jamming that saw virtual hat tips to Bisco staples like “Morph Dusseldorf” and “Basis for a Day” with a noticeable “Funkytown” tease thrown in for good measure at some point.  But the main course was served via two sets of precise and enthralling electronica orchestrated by some of the best in the business.

    With Deitch and Brownstein setting much of the rhythmic foundation, Lee and Magner seemed to go back and forth, trading incendiary leads and emptying out all the tricks their respective keyboard rigs carried.  While it didn’t quite have the raging intensity of a Bisco show, both sets featured constant downtempo grooves that were more than easy to move along to as well as selective covers of some of the genre’s finest like Air’s “La Femme D’Argent” and RJD2’s “The Horror.”  This was only the second night of a short three show tour, after playing only once before that, but it seems as if these artists have formed a collective that yields a unique sound that also pays respect to its forefathers in the electronica scene.

  • Dopapod Wraps 3-Night Run at Brooklyn Bowl Leaving Fans Happily Ever After

    Capping off back-to-back explosive nights at Brooklyn Bowl, Saturday, March 25, brought the third and final Dopapod show of the run, closing one chapter and marking the beginning stages of their 26-date Spring 2017 tour.

    The last gig of the trifecta came in hot, feeding off of the energy from their two previous performances which broke out Chuck Berry tribute covers, birthday celebrations and fresh, unheard material from the prog-jam quartet, who recently reunited with their original drummer, Neal “Fro” Evans. As if an original lineup, a newly mapped out tour and debuting fresh grooves to their fans wasn’t enough of a natural high, a smiley Rob Compa, guitarist of Dopapod, dropped the news that he got engaged that very same day—giving a tight-knit Brooklyn Bowl crowd a handful of reasons to celebrate.

    Paris_monster opened up the show for Dopapod faithfuls and while they seemed to be an alternative indie group to the naked eye, it became apparent the Brooklyn-based duo thrives in the midst of synth-pop, garage genres.

    From the second the music began, all eyes were drawn to the pig-tailed singer who exemplified an arsenal of talents by singing, playing the keys with one hand and impressively, the drums with the other. The two took the stage and while the bassist seemed mainly focused on the tunes, the singer’s vocals took command of the entire room, assumingly well-trained and practiced. The vocals shaped up to be that of a hypnotic and spiritual performance with a voice to be heard, climbing to the loudest crescendos and back down to minute whispers.

    Their sound in its entirety had the capability of transforming and layering the noises of two men, into what sounded like a room of beaming musicians. Their experimental ties definitely drew to the Dopafans through their naturally unique tastes, although remaining incomparable to the headliner—something the crowd was more than willing to embrace. Once you get past the initial shock value of their arena-like sound and switchboard of genres, you come to realize the extreme talent and precision it must take to juggle vocals and keys while playing the drum with one hand, all while doing so with a picture of ease. Even if the music isn’t your style, you can appreciate the theatrical, confident and encapsulating performance the duo let loose.

    Ready to close out a glorified 3-night run at Brooklyn Bowl, Eli, Rob, Chuck and Neal walked to their respective instruments and while most were taken by the lingering moment ahead of hearing their favorite tunes, my eyes couldn’t be peeled away from analyzing and chuckling over Chuck’s Led Zeppelin t-shirt, which most certainly was adorned with the members of KISS—a solid wardrobe choice with a clear indication the Boston-born group was ready to rock. The first set rolled out with fan-favorite hits like 2014’s Never Odd or Even tracks,“Picture in a Picture” and “Hey Zues! (Que Tal?)” with an abundance of covers and teases peppered throughout the introductory set. The first tease came upon Rob’s elated engagement announcement. While some heard the news via Facebook, others were delighted with the announcement from the beginning notes of “Here Comes the Bride.”

    Shortly after sharing the joyous milestone, the group delivered treat number two, which came in the form of a brand new song titled “Mucho.” Bringing their rock roots to the forefront of the famed Brooklyn venue, the group launched into a gratifying cover of Black Sabbath’s “The Wizard” with help from Paris_monster’s vocalist Josh and Jackson from Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds on harmonica before closing set 1 with “Blast.” High energy was maintained throughout, as both the band and audience were able to feed off of one another’s positive energy and uncontrollable excitement. Compa specifically had an extra spring in his step, demonstrating impressive vocals throughout the night and absolutely manhandling his guitar. Who can say if it can be attributed to his engagement, raw talent or both- but Compa’s performance easily soared high over a Brooklyn audience.

    The second set welcomed an enticing Chuck and Fro jam session and although some may be torn about the decision to replace Scotty Zwang with their original drummer,  it was evident his skill on the drum kit was appreciated by most. Next came “Weird Charlie,” taking things back a few years to their Redivider days with “Bubblebrain,” complete with FABA teases, and “Vol. 3 #86” paired with top-notch technicolor lighting and teases of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” and Nirvana anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (which it most certainly did, with appropriately described, stagnant air in a venue that offers live music, bowling, plentiful food and drinks).

    Dopapod’s lighting designer Luke Stratton never fails to disappoint—even when Fro manages leaves his haze fluid in Colorado. Eli grabbed the reigns during “Vol. 3 #86, ” as abundantly enthusiastic and rhythmic head nods ensued from his seat as his hands flew back and forth across the keys. “Indian Grits” unwrapped gifts like a “Watermelon Man” tease and “Stand By Me” jam—one that was unexpected. The 3-night stint came to a close with a “Psycho Nature” encore which left all in attendance chanting “eat, drink, breathe, sleep,” four essentials every fan must remember when left in amazement from Dopapod performances.

    The quartet will continue to embark on their 2017 tour just ahead of the anticipated festival season. Compa and company will be riding the wave of excitement this year will continue to bring them—engagements, new music and touring, oh my!
