  • Hearing Aide: Pigeons Playing Ping Pong ‘PIZAZZ’

Once you fall down the rabbit hole and begin obsessively following the “Jam Scene” you quickly take note of which bands are the real deal and which ones will soon become another fourth-tier festival causality. Since their birth in 2009, Baltimore natives Pigeons Playing Ping Pong have quickly pulled themselves up the ropes and show no signs of slowing down. Progressing from simply a name you saw on the line-up of nearly a dozen festivals and hearing about them for Phish after-shows to headlining their own two-set shows and establishing an obsessive fan-base of their own (often referred to as “The Flock”), PPPP has secured a spot in the rank of bands you absolutely must see if they are within driving distance (eight hours is driving distance… right?). With the release of their new album PIZAZZ on October 20, the band solidifies that they are here to stay and only getting better with age.

PIZAZZIf you’ve ever been fortunate enough to catch a show, then you already know how much energy this band has at all times. For the right person, a PPPP show is the equivalent of running a 5K on acid. Prior to your first show I would recommend going to the gym three times that week to prepare for the number of funk-driven convulsions your body will encounter. While it is often difficult to translate what a band can achieve in a live setting to a studio album, PIZAZZ is about as close as it gets. This is the essential “dancing your ass off in the kitchen while cooking dinner and you’re so into it you don’t even notice your roast has burnt” kind of album. It is genuinely fun, with each track offering a different form of exhilaration to keep the listener engaged. It is often difficult to choose music that satisfies every guest’s tastes when throwing a party, but with PIZAZZ you are guaranteed a bridge that will keep everyone satisfied and may even inspire a few hallway dance circles.

The album starts off hot with its first single “Fun in Funk” which epitomizes what the band and album is all about. The lyrics are playful and self-aware, but musically it is clear that they are not messing around. While “Fun in Funk” has already debuted live, like many other tracks from the album, the studio version is cleaned up and polished, while not at all overproduced. The second single “Something for Ya” follows keeping the energy going, but after listening through the album a couple of times you realize that they could have release almost any other song as their second single and it would fit. The album flows like a well-thought out 11-song set. As you reach the end of the final track, the mystical “Poseidon,” you have the urge to let out a little yell and clap for a couple of minutes until they come out for an encore. While we will have to wait a bit for the encore, this album is certainly one you will listen to over and over until it comes.

Key Tracks: Fun in Funk, Something for Ya, Poseidon

  • Phish’s ‘A Live One’ Gets a Vinyl Box Set Treatment

The recent vinyl revival has brought the re-release of Phish’s first live album, A Live One, available Oct. 27 via preorder.

The track selection, famously, wasn’t from just a single show but was a collection of some of Phish’s best work throughout their 1994 summer, fall and holiday tours. Phans can choose between four different pre-order options, all of which yield a pretty big bang for their buck.

The options range from just the four vinyl box set for a modest $94.00 to $135.00 for the Stash Bundle which includes: A Live One 4-LP Vinyl Box, a 3X Fishman tee shirt on Heathered Stone and A Live One Lithograph Print and a full color lithograph featuring the original photograph from the cover of A Live One by photographer Danny Clinch (Measures apprx 12”x24”.) The Phish website says, “Each LP is pressed onto 180g split red/blue vinyl and includes a full color extensive photo booklet and a free MP3 download of the box set, transferred from vinyl.”

It’s unclear if these sets are in limited supply but it is safe to assume that they will sell fast. Boxes are available now for preorder with a $3.99 shipping fee.

  • Hearing Aide: Talking Under Water ‘Talking Under Water’

Talking Under Water takes us on a journey that some of us know too well: the winding path to recovering a broken heart. At times achingly candid, the overall tone of the album is triumphant, featuring big choruses and soulful vocals that stir the intricate songwriting. Talking Under Water is a five-piece outfit hailing from Rochester. Their namesake debut LP is a great premise for what we can expect from this promising group.

After Dave Chisholm received his Doctorate of Musical Arts from Eastman School of Music for jazz trumpet in 2013, he found himself returning to his roots of singer-songwriter. The project began to take on life when he decided to put together a band. He elicited help from fellow former Eastman students Elise Hughey (cello), Alex Patrick (guitar) and Joe Parker (drums).

“I really think cello lends itself well to the type of songs I tend to write–these reflective, melancholy, lyrical things–so I asked Elise to play,” Chisholm told NYS Music. “She has both her Bachelors and Master’s Degrees from Eastman, as well. In any project she’s a part of, Elise really puts everything she has into it.”

While Parker and Patrick’s contributions live on with this LP, Talking Under Water now features Colin Gordon (piano), Matt Bevan-Perkins (drums) and Samantha Thomas (vocals). According to Chisholm, there are plans in stow to record this summer with the current line-up.

The group recorded in December of 2015 at Temperamental Studios in Geneseo, NY. A large portion of the LP was recorded live; and Grammy Award winner Stephen Roessner produced and mixed the record. Violinists Marja Alanen and Molly Werts McDonald, and violinist Ben Magruder joined them in the recording studio, along with jazz trombonist Brendan Lanighan and Matthew Sieber-Ford on tenor saxophone.

One of the driving forces of this record is to give people a guiding path in times of trouble. “I just think about the hard times I’ve had, the struggles I’ve faced with regards to my own mental health–it seems like sad songs really serve such a strong purpose for those times in our lives,” Chisholm wrote. “So often the overwhelming feeling during dark times is one of isolation, and sad songs tell me that I’m not alone. The message is ultimately one of empathy. I hope listeners find this music cathartic when times are hard, and point the way for a more hopeful tomorrow, even on just a personal level.”

The album begins with an alluring piano tune, and Chisholm’s voice quickly follows in the first track, “Lost,” which has the first big chorus that could be seen as the band’s signature sound. The interplay of instruments and artistic melody exhibits the diligence the band poured forth while producing the record. The second track, “We Used to Dream,” blends the horn section seamlessly into their sound. “Days Like Today” shows Beatles inspiration, while the piano certainly adds a wonderful element to the building melody. Finally, the track “Gravity” is an acoustic melody, eventually backed by Hughey with stirring cello, where Chisholm once again displays his wide vocal range.

The album will be released on Friday, April 28, 2017. To pre-order your copy today, visit here. Talking Under Water will hold an album release show on April 29 at The Little Theater in Rochester. For more information, go here.

  • Hearing Aide: Gordon St. ‘Gordon St.’

From Schenectady comes Gordon St., a rock and roll band known for their unique music and diverse cover songs in concert. The band is made up of four members including Dan Noonan as the lead vocalist and bassist, Ritch Harrigan on the guitar, keyboardist Mark Bertini, and drummer Jason Nowak. The group’s upcoming debut, self-titled album will be released in its entirety on April 29.

Gordon St. features either original tracks including two singles on their album – “Right as Rain,” a song that seemingly begins as an acoustic number right before the electric sound kicks in with an ear-pleasing groove. “King of Hearts” has the listener following the infectious sounds of the drummer throughout the piece. Another featured song, “Until We Meet Again,” had me hooked from the beginning as it starts with a stripped down vocal accompanied by the organic sounds of snapping fingers.

Other tracks that accentuate the raw musical talent of these musicians are “Peppermint Chamber” and “The Equation,” both consisting of instrumental intros. “Paranoid Jones” is yet another example of a song with a musical outro and exciting guitar riffs, which are commonly heard in the group’s music.

Although the band’s genre is generally classified as rock and roll, Gordon St. draws from their many influencers to create an original sound. A number of their tracks experiment with different styles of music and subtly cross over into other genres as well. Take a listen for yourselves on their album release!

Key Tracks: Peppermint Chamber, Right as Rain, Until We Meet Again

  • Phish to Release ‘St. Louis ’93’

Phish has announced the release of St. Louis ’93, an archival collection of two shows from consecutive tours recorded at St. Louis’ American Theatre, as a 6-CD boxed set.

In 1993, Phish went on tour in support of their fourth studio album, Rift, and, at the same time were, hitting up larger venues, like theaters and colleges. The first part of St. Louis ’93 finds the band on April 14, 1993 in the midst of an extensive winter and spring tour. The show is dubbed the “Roger’s Proposal” show as Trey Anastasio’s childhood friend, Roger Holloway proposed to his girlfriend on stage at the start of the second set. The show features a memorable “AC/DC Bag” > “My Sweet One” for Holloway and his fiancée, a creative “Stash” > “Kung” > “The Horse” mashup and a fantastic “Harpua” > “Runaway Jim.”

The second half of St. Louis ’93 sees the band’s return to the American Theatre on August 16, 1993 in the middle of their summer tour. The tour saw the band taking greater risks and digging deep into their repertoire. From the press release:

Unique interstitial jams connected many of the songs, adding an extra element of mystery to the proceedings. Highlights include a non-stop opening sequence of “Axilla” > “Possum” > “Horn” > “Reba” > “Sparkle” and the only “Mike’s Song” > “Faht” > “Weekapaug Groove” combination ever played. The show finished with an unexpected quartet of classic Phish covers, including Duke Ellington’s “Take The ‘A’ Train,” Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times,” “Amazing Grace,” and Felice & Boudleaux Bryant’s country standard, “Rocky Top.”

St. Louis ’93 will be released on March 31. Several pre-order packages are available through the Phish website.

Phish will play a 13-night run at New York City’s Madison Square Garden starting July 21 and concluding Aug. 6. Tickets for those shows go on sale today at noon.
