  • The Aptly Named Finger Lakes Live Open For Business in Geneva

    The Finger Lakes region, Rochester included, is bursting with live music lately. Dan Smalls Presents has a handle on things on the south side of Cayuga Lake. On the north side of the lakes, The Smith hosts medium-sized shows at the theater and occasionally puts on some club-sized shows in smaller spaces around Geneva. But there hasn’t been a venue hosting live music consistently on a weekly basis in Geneva for a long time. Until now…

    flx liveFinger Lakes Live – FLX Live – a near 300 capacity space, opened this past August and has been holding shows every Thursday through Saturday (and sometimes Wednesdays) ever since. The venue is drawing in both national talent like Billy Strings or Molly Tuttle Band (who played the night we visited), regional acts from Syracuse, Rochester or Buffalo and bands from their own backyard.

    Finger Lakes Live FLX LiveOwner Ian Pattison, General Manager Nicholas LaChance and Musical Director Matthew Elkin met at Hobart and William Smith College and watched as the landscape of Geneva changed throughout their time in school. The city has recently undergone a renaissance linked closely to the boom of wine and beer tourism in the area. With that success came a bunch of great restaurants and bars. But the friends spotted a need for a music venue.

    Part of the beauty of FLX Live is that it is first and foremost a live music venue, and a bar second. The sound and sight lines throughout the place speak to this, with improvements still in the works. It’s a warm and welcoming place, with wood accents throughout. A long and easily accessible bar is backed by beautifully lit wooden cask bottle displays. The beer list spans all tastes with something to satisfy the snobbiest of drinkers as well as those preferring something that advertises on sports broadcasts. There is also plenty of wine and alcohol available as well. Within the next couple of weeks, they will begin offering pizza and other finger foods.

    Patrons can view the show from hightop tables and chairs in an elevated area at the back of the room, which for some shows will be available for reservation, with bottle service possibly in the near future. There is also a large floor immediately in front of the stage, for those wishing to get closer to the band and dance. They will be hosting live bands of all kinds, everything from rock to folk to salsa to funk and everything in between, with DJs spinning dance music after many shows. Just a 45 minute drive from Rochester, Syracuse or Ithaca, FLX Live is well situated to draw people from out of town to downtown Geneva for live music. So look at their upcoming schedule and make a plan to check it out.

  • Music, Craft Beer, Food: A “Finger Lakin’ Good” Time

    Who is ready for a “Finger Lakin’ Good” Time full of music and craft beer? If you answered yes, maybe, or even “huh?”,  NYS Music encourages you to come down to the Inaugural Lincoln Hills “Finger Lakin’ Good” Fall Fest in Canandaigua, NY, on Saturday, October 14. 

    For the humble ticket price of $15, you’ll gain access to more than seven live bands, craft beer, food vendors and a beautiful autumn breeze. The lineup will include The Eric Krasno Band, Floodwood, Dirty Blanket, Pearly Baker’s Best, Aaron Lipp & Yarms, Workingman’s Dead, Badfeet and more to be announced! Music will run from 12am until 8pm. Get your tickets .

    The Eric Krasno Band will headline the event. Eric Krasno is the guitarist, songwriter and co-founder of the world famous bands Soulive and Lettuce. He is also respected as a producer and songwriter, working with everyone from Norah Jones, The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Talib Kweli, 50 Cent, Pretty Lights, Aaron Neville, Allen Stone and beyond. In promotion of his latest solo album, Blood From a Stone, Eric Krasno is touring extensively this fall with his hand selected band. The Lincoln Hills “Finger Lakin’ Good” Fall Fest will be a prime opportunity for locals to catch a live performance of Eric Krasno’s self titled band.

  • Get Ready for Second Annual IT Fest with Intrepid Travelers!

    Founded on friendship, fun and a sense of freedom. Intrepid Travelers are a quartet based in Buffalo that defines itself through boundless improvisation and eclectic evolution. 2017 has been a huge year for the band. Touring relentlessly around the United States from coast to coast, the fellas in IT have been redefining the limitations of improvisational music, and have their own fest. Be sure to check them out at Summer Camp if you are there this weekend.

    A little bit about IT:   Two days and two nights including Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10. Entrance to the festival will cost you just $20. The festival is held on the beautiful private property of Josh Skowronski in Alden, NY. Enter at the green gate on South Blossom Lea Drive. This is an all weather event. Parking and camping are included upon entry. The Land itself is 14 gorgeous acres with hiking trails and the beautiful Cayuga Creek. There will be an array of food and drink vendors on site. Intrepid Travelers will play three sets over the two days. One on Friday and two on Saturday. Saturday night’s set will feature live painting from various Buffalo artists. Music ends at 10pm each night.

    IT Fest’s mission is to showcase local talent across Western New York. This year will feature fire performer Asha Ashwell on Friday and Saturday night. Saturday morning will feature a yoga class with Ashley Strazzella. Saturday afternoon will also feature a Kan Jam tournament, a hoop class, a workshop on mysticism, spirituality, public health and tarot card readings! Their goal for the weekend is to create a temporary community in which the arts are brought to the forefront in unison with nature. After the music ends each night there will be a massive campfire.     And then there were 4….

    Two weeks ago, we started with 64 artists from across New York State, now we’re here. Four bands from Binghamton, Buffalo, and a pair from Syracuse remain representing genres of prog rock, jam, reggae and drum fusion, bringing us into the Final 4 and home stretch of NYS Music’s March Madness 2017 friendly competition with these rising bands from across New York State.

    Raibred (Nietzsche’s Region) vs Intrepid Travelers (Castle Studio Region)

    Raibred is a progressive/psychedelic rock band from the Binghamton, NY area. Formed in 2011, we have played over 100 shows all across New York and Pennsylvania. Raibred’s setlist is changing constantly at every show which makes each performance unique and one of a kind. With a growing list of originals and covers from the Dead, Phish, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, moe., Little Feat, etc. you can hear all of your favorites mixed in with our original work to make your night out one to remember.     Intrepid Travelers were founded on friendship, fun, and a sense of freedom, Intrepid Travelers is a musical quartet from Buffalo, NY that defines itself through boundless improvisation and eclectic evolution. Blending roots reggae, dancehall, heavy drum & bass and soulful vocals with conscious lyrics into positive dance music will make you want to move! Root SHOCK has been surprising and delighting crowds across the Central New York region, bringing their unique high-energy style spearheaded by the stunning vocals of Jessica Brown to a wide range of settings. The band’s dedication to spreading music with a positive message has paid off in entertaining, elevating, and energizing music lovers of all walks of life! The band released their latest video “Sunlight” this past week.

    Boogie Low recently released their latest album this month at The Westcott Theater. This four piece band originating out of Syracuse, NY includes Loudon Smith, Matthew West, Brandon Au, and Tommy Dennis delivers an organic sound created by each member’s individual style. With musical inspiration taken from a wide spectrum of music, Boogie Low produces a fusion of intricate melodies accompanied by an unconventional drum style.
