  • Hearing Aide: Escaper ‘Skeleton Key’

Brooklyn-based band Escaper recently released their debut album, Skeleton Key. Escaper consists of Will Hanza on guitar and vocals, Johnny Butler on saxophone, Adam Ahuja on keys, Jay Giacomazzo on bass and Andrew Nesbitt on drums. This seven track album takes listeners on an unpredictable stroll through exploratory tones, multicolored rhythms and colorful melodies full of airy notes that leave songs wide open for improvised jams to be interjected during live performances. A unique element to this record is that the band laid down all the tracks in one day, with one take each, at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn, NY. Each musician simultaneously played in separate rooms, beautifully capturing the raw essence of a live performance.

The first track, “Skeleton Key, Pt. 1,” eases listeners into the album by playfully winding back and forth between light, jazzy beats and kaleidoscopic intonations. Picking up the energy, “Mutiny” lays out the vibes with heavy drums, deep bass and extended guitar notes that wrap around jazz infused keys and saxophone tones that linger on the edges of euphoric spaces, creating a relaxed mood for the listener.

“Lighthouse” throws out crunchier funkadelic rhythms, begging the listener to sway back and forth to the beat. Punchy keys start out this refreshing track before flowing into a combination of jazzed out saxophone and trippy guitar. Once again, deep bass and tight drums keep the musicians in line throughout the melody. The fusion of so many genres puts Escaper into a unique category, blurring the lines between the jazz and jam scenes.

A slow building “Night Crawler” is fully stocked with short bursts of brisk notes that tap dance their way through the tune, picking up varying musical elements that effortlessly move around the sweet-sounding melody. “Narwhal” glides around smooth jazz beats that flow on the edge of picturesque tones merged by the guitar, sax, and keyboard.

The album wraps up with “Skeleton Key, Pt. 2” in a way that highlights breathy sax and a splashy guitar/key combo before an energetic “Castles” brings the music to a close. Overall, this debut album is filled with fluid compositions that will come alive during live performances due to the spacious range left open for improvisational play. A solid package of laid back, uncomplicated tunes that seamlessly run the gamut from jazz to jam with  touches of psychedelic grooves that will ease any listener into a relaxed mood.

  • Dead and Company Play Perfect Sets During Return to Citi Field in New York City

Dead and Company’s third tour made its way to Citi Field on June 24 while the Mets were away in San Fransisco, defeating the Giants by a score of 5 – 2. The summer evening weather made for a spectacular night of music with a packed stadium.

The long-standing game of guessing the show opener was on the tongues of many before the 7:30 downbeat and, regardless of incorrect guesses, “Dancing In The Streets” (which debuted earlier this tour) got the Queens crowd moving to the pace of the night. The relaxed but fun set continued on with the likes of “Jack Straw,” Tennesse Jed” and “Cold Rain and Snow” among others. Dead and Company jumped the gun by capping off the set with the party-rousing “One More Saturday Night,” more often seen in the second set of a Dead show.

As the second set rolled onward from the beautiful “Scarlet Begonias” opener, they let Oteil sing, as some t-shirts have said. Burbridge has been making more of a vocal appearance on this tour and took the lead on singing “Comes a Time,” making for a spectacular performance of the song coupled with Mayer’s atmospheric noodling on Dead and Company’s debut of that song. Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzman put on a unique rhythmic soundscape for the drums/space break which was integrative of acoustic and electronic sounds and instruments including Hart’s multi-string, one-note Beam.

The encore was truly something special for the New York crowd. The familiar opening riff of “Touch of Grey” rang through the crowd noise as the projection faded to the b-roll live footage of the synchronized light show atop the Empire State Building across the East River in Manhattan. Without much of a skip the happy feels were capped off in a rock-and-roll fashion with “Johnny B. Goode.”

Dead and Company’s two night run at Citi Field last June was a good showcase of the chops of a Grateful Dead family lineup who had only been on tour for about one and a half years at that point. In this year’s single show at Citi Field, Dead and Company showed an ever-flourishing presence of musicianship on stage miles ahead of the band’s debut shows in Albany and NYC in the fall of 2015, which even then were noteworthy.

    Setlist:

Set 1: Dancing In The Streets > Jack Straw, Here Comes Sunshine, Tennessee Jed, Cold Rain and Snow, Bird Song > One More Saturday Night

Set 2: Scarlet Begonias > Viola Lee Blues, Estimated Prophet > Comes A Time > Eyes Of The World > Drums/Space > The Other One > Morning Dew

Encore: Touch Of Grey > Johnny B. Goode

  • Hearing Aide: Powerflo ‘Powerflo’

There seems to be a growing trend in metal music of rap-metal making a comeback since Prophets Of Rage emerged last year.  You could argue that bands like Body Count have been around for a long time, but now the genre seems to be in the spotlight again. And with any sub-genre of metal, you get the flash in the pan bands or the goofy sounding bands that don’t last, however, Powerflo has landed and makes a statement.

Consisting of powerhouse members of Biohazard, Fear Factory, Downset, and fronted by Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog, their self titled debut album makes you stop and say, “Hey, we got something here.”  You always get a feeling with super groups that they could not work or blend well or just seem to be an odd fit.  This is not the case.  Powerflo is tight, has chemistry and contains killer hooks and a hard sound that grabs you by the collar and makes you listen.

The opening track “My M.O.” opens with a crushing guitar riff and dope rhymes straight from Sen Dog with a fantastic rhythm and beat from bassist Christen Olde Wolbers and drummer Fernando Schaefer. Its perfect to get you hyped up or that necessary kick you need to listen to while you’re at the gym.  The next track “Resistance” is heavily vocal, driven with sick drums.  But the song that stands out most is “Less Than a Human” because of how motivating it is.  The track that highlights the band the best is the single “Victim of Circumstance.”  If you want to get someone hooked on this band, show them this track.  It’s a perfect sports anthem.  I would expect to hear this band at sporting and fight events.  Book it.

Some of the Biohazard fans may be let down because they’re expecting to hear the kick ass break downs and guitar solos from a band that made them so iconic.  Poweflo isn’t driven by break downs and solos, it’s driven by catchy hooks.  The hooks punch HARD.  And Sen Dog really shines because he’s front and center.   This is a band with a bold move by guitarist Billy Graziadei, because everyone is used to him being front and center anchoring for Biohazard, but he has a different role in Powerflo. But it works.  This album is a must have for any hip hop, hardcore or metal fan.  Keep an eye out for Powerflo.  It’s easily the best debut metal album of this year.

Key Tracks: “My M.O.”, “Less Than A Human”, “Victim Of Circumstance”

  • Empire State Building and Dead & Company Teaming Up for Citi Field Synchronized Light Show

Saturday’s Dead & Company show at Citi Field will have a special sit-in for the encore. Empire State Reality Trust, owners of the iconic Empire State Building, has teamed up with Dead & Company and New York’s classic rock station Q104.3 to provide a synchronized LED light show to illuminate the famed tower as the band performs its encore at Citi Field.

The Empire State Building’s light show will be designed by Marc Brickman and begins at approximately 11:00 p.m. Those not at Citi Field can still enjoy the music through the iHeartRadio app or over the air on New York’s classic rock station Q104.3.

Once the show is over, it will be available for viewing on the Empire State Building’s Facebook and YouTube channels as well as the Dead & Company YouTube channel.

Dead & Company recently performed at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. You can read the NYS Music review of that show here and video from SPAC below.

  • Top 5 Reasons to Attend Electric Zoo

Festival season for 2017 has begun and is in full swing! There are more and more festivals popping up every year, but a solid returning fest worth mentioning is taking place over Labor Day weekend in NYC. Electric Zoo is in its ninth year and takes place on Randall’s Island in the East River. It’s NYC’s largest electronic music festival and that’s saying something!

electric zooThis iconic music and arts festival is known for it’s zoo theme and for bringing in the heaviest hitters in the EDM scene. There are countless reasons why this festival is one to check out so we’ve compiled the top five reasons for attending this year.

    NYC’s Own Festival

This event is perfect for New Yorkers because it takes place right in your backyard. Being able to sleep in your own bed at the end of a long day of dancing is something every festival goer dreams of. Located in the heart of New York City, the views from EZoo are what makes it so unique.

There are many different ways to get to the event: bus, train, subway, ferry ride, or walk over one of the bridges connecting Randall’s Island to Manhattan. The idea of a festival placed in a park in the middle of a major city is so unique that there are very few venues who can achieve this perfect storm of a location.

    Epic Lineup

EZoo always manages to draw in big names and a diverse lineup, so there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re a bass-head, or more into melodies, every genre of EDM is represented at this festival. The headliners for Friday are DJ Snake, the Trap legend, and Galantis the House gods.

On Saturday the House vibes will be coming in hot with Above & Beyond and Zedd. Finally, Sunday will close out the fest bringing the GOAT Deadmau5 back and better than ever. This return will bring out a crowd because he hasn’t been performing recently. He will be going back-to-back with Eric Prydz and then Armin Van Buuren to close.

    Cashless Payment System

The anxiety of carrying around cash all weekend while trying to unplug and let loose is eliminated by this cashless system. Many festivals have shifted from using cash and cards to make the payment process more enjoyable for festival goers. The wristband is activated before you enter the grounds so that you can purchase any event merch, epic rave glasses, food & beverages, and other products with the flick of the wrist.

    Diverse Crowd

NYC is considered the melting pot of the world, and couple that with a diverse lineup of artists, and you’ll be sure to encounter people from all over the world! Much like a normal zoo has a variety of animals on display, so will Electric Zoo. Don’t forget to bring your candies to speak the universal language of PLUR.

    On-Call Medical Care

They say anything is fine as long as it’s in moderation, but some people get a little carried away. For anyone in danger of hurting themselves or others, there are medical tents placed throughout the fest. They are fully staffed with experienced New York medical personnel who can offer you anything from a bottle of water or band-aid to pump you full of an iv to rehydrate your body. Since the event is in September, it can get pretty hot out there so the medical staff tries to help everyone who walks, stumbles, or gets carried in.

    Final Thoughts

Re-entry is not allowed so once you finally leave the zoo, be sure you don’t leave anything but footprints behind. This festival is unlike anything you’ve ever seen and so purchase your tickets before they sell out! You can buy single day tickets, or splurge a little and go for the whole weekend!

  • Hearing Aide: Suffocation ‘…Of The Dark Light’

We all have heard of the many wonders of New York City. From the beautiful architecture of the towering skyscrapers to the world famous restaurants for those who desire nothing but the best in taste bud stimulation. But beneath the beauty of this majestic place lurks something ugly, distorted, and heavy; death metal! N.Y. has always been a generator of some of the best death metal bands since the birth of the genre. From bands like Immolation and Mortician, this city bleeds for it’s death metal community.  Now with the release of Suffocation’s latest blistering piece, ….of The Dark Light, it shows NYDM will never die!

Suffocation Of The Dark Light…Of The Dark Light (via Nuclear Blast is the eighth studio album from the NYDM legends. This is a long awaited follow-up from the band’s crushing 2013’s album Pinnacle of Bedlam (via Nuclear Records). Recorded at Full Force Studio with the expertise of Joe Cinecotta, you can bet those walls were rattling like a crazy mother from those devastating sonic assaults. Just by looking at the magnificent artwork cover by Collin Mark, the design will catch your attention. It features a beautiful humanoid in a dark blacken blue abyss, slowly becoming one with the unknown. You can just feel the hairs stand on end when you look at this artwork, knowing it will be one hell of a journey. The album starts off on a highly aggressive and technical foot with the track “Clarity Through Deprivation.” You can hear the quick precision from both Terrance Hobbs and Charlie Errigo finger work all across this sonic barrage!  It proves the young bands still can learn a few things from their death metal ancestors in perfect timing and song construction.
Like most old-school death metal fans, I need some deadly grooves to get my rotten corpse moving in the pit. Lucky for us, groove is not forgotten on this little gem! We have the track ‘Return To The Abyss’ to have you breaking some bones. This song is powered by the blood, sweat, and sacrifices of Eric Morotti (drums) and Derek Boyer (Bass) with their enriched flavor of rhythmic sauce! From the very start to the dreadful end, the track will make your neck muscles spasm and will cause one hell of a head rush. Prepare that icepack after blasting this beast!
Frank Mullen’s vocals are still more intense and demonic than any singer I know in the death metal genre. His vocals all over this album are perfectly executed with so much testosterone and energy, especially on the tracks “…Of The Dark Light” and “Return To The Abyss,”  it will melt your face so much that even Leatherface will need a backup!
With the legends in extreme metal going strong like Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, and Dying Fetus still vomitting out great albums, death metal will never die! I give this album 5 tombstones out of 5. Check out the band on tour right now and pick up this album at your local store or buy it through the official band site and to check out the tour dates for a show by you!
Key Tracks: Clarity Through Deprivation, Your Last Breaths, …Of The Dark Light

The Clearwater Festival, more formally known as Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival, is returning this weekend on June 17 and 18 to Croton Point Park in the lower Hudson Valley.

Founded by the late Pete Seeger, the festival took a brief one-year hiatus in 2016 while the organization focused on fundraising efforts for repairs to sloop Clearwater. As they promised, the festival is back and this year features familiar faces and venerable musicians in the lineup.

At the top of the bill are Arlo Guthrie, Lake Street Dive, Joan Osborne, Tommy Emmanuel, Los Lobos, Josh Ritter, Lucky Chops and many Clearwater favorites including Toshi Reagon & Big Lovely, Guy Davis, Tom Chapin, and many others. Check out the full list and stage schedule of performers here.

    Matt Turk

Aside from a full lineup of music going from 11am until just after sunset the Clearwater Festival features many other attractions. Kim and Reggie Harris

The festival site at Croton Point Park is a short shuttle ride or nice walk from the Croton-Harmon Metro North/Amtrak station. Single-day and two-day passes for the festival are available here along with options for camping at Croton Point Park. Special rail fair/festival admission packages are available for those traveling via Metro North.

  • Metallica Hits Nassau Coliseum for the Only Hardwired Tour Arena Show

Metallica brought their Hardwired World Tour for the second of two stops in the New York Metro area on May 17 at the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.

Volbeat kicked the night off with several of their new songs from Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie along with a few of their previously released tunes. This wasn’t Volbeat’s first time supporting Metallica on tour either and their set was a treat for those who beat the Long Island rush hour traffic to get to the Barn before Metallica’s set.

Metallica Nassau ColiseumMetallica’s Hardwired World Tour is entirely at large stadiums, except for the Nassau Coliseum show. While the stadiums certainly have their appeal for a monster show, nothing compares to catching one of the world’s biggest metal bands at a comparatively small indoor area (although their private fan club show at the 1,500-seat Webster Hall this past September might have this beat).

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BUOT4toFdv1/?taken-by=spm222photo

The setlist had a tasty mix of what could be fit in a nearly two and a half hour show with just enough to tease their latest release Hardwired…To Self-Destruct and to satisfy the palate of the old school fans. Not to mention that the pick of songs was somewhat different than the MetLife Stadium show just a few nights prior.

Metallica has been playing together for 36 years now, which is a well-seasoned career mark not every band sees. After the last sustained note of “Enter Sandman” and some stage banter, Hetfield noted that it was the eleventh time Metallica had played the Nassau Coliseum…and won’t be the last.

Hardwired Tour – Metallica w/s/g Volbeat, Nassau Coliseum, May 17, 2017

    Setlists:

Volbeat: The Devil’s Bleeding Crown, Seal the Deal, Heaven nor Hell, Sad Man’s Tongue, Black Rose, Let It Burn, 16 Dollars, Hallelujah Goat, Lola Montez, Dead but Rising, Still Counting

Metallica: Hardwired, Atlas, Rise!, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Ride the Lightning, The Unforgiven, Now That We’re Dead, Moth Into Flame, Harvester Of Sorrow, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Kirk/Rob Guitar/Bass solos, The Four Horsemen. Sad But True, One, Master of Puppets, Fade to Black, Seek and Destroy, Blackened

Encore: Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman
