  • Sub Rosa Recording Sessions Offer Unique Experience

Every third Sunday of each month since 2013, SubCat Music Studios in Syracuse hosts their Sub Rosa Sessions. Session #41 on July 16, 2017 was hosted by Amanda Rogers, who invited Mike Powell to perform as the featured artist. These evenings consist of thirty or so people joining the performers in Studio A at SubCat. The entire session is recorded, attendees have a meet and greet afterward and enjoy drinks and snacks before they head home with an exclusive CD copy of the performance. The intimate setting in a first class recording/production studio provides a unique experience for the listeners and the musicians as well. Much of the stage banter was cut to allow for as many songs as possible to make it to the final disc, but it was that banter that helped connect the audience to Rogers and Powell.

Amanda Rogers performed original songs on a singularly decorated Yamaha keyboard. Her vocals ranged from whispered words to powerful jabs at her lyrics. The setting was perfect for Rogers, as her songwriting deserves to be carefully heard, not ignored as background music, as other solo artists sometimes experience in local clubs and taverns. Rogers began with “Bag of Bones” and “Blue,” the latter from her upcoming release Heavy Blue, currently being mastered at SubCat. She joked that her on the spot setlist might end up in alphabetical order. Rogers made that idea more difficult when she followed up with “Walking,” from her most recent recording, the 2014 double album Wild. A highlight of her set was “Stranger Days,” in which Rogers croons, “I’ve got scary visions, I’ve got deep, dark decisions, I’ve got stranger days up ahead. And I ain’t no gypsy rambler, ain’t no homecoming queen, I’ve still got aching for my twenties, I could’ve been stuck there in between. I want to face these stranger days I got coming, but…my mind’s still running.”

Mike Powell took the stage in front of about three dozen fans, friends, family members, and studio employees who were treated to the first ever Sub Rosa Sessions pre-show parking lot tailgate party, hosted by the ubiquitous Sue and Larry Powell. Powell appeared with his familiar right-hand man, guitarist John Hanus, also a member of Powell’s recently formed full band project The Black River, whose debut album is expected to be released later this year from Rising Feather. Hanus supplemented Powell’s songs with melodic riffs, accent notes, and slide guitar stylings on his well-worn Fender Telecaster. Powell began the evening playing an enormous orange Gretsch guitar with Bigsby vibrato, later switching to a resonator guitar, before finishing his set with a red, white, and blue Harmony Buck Owens American model acoustic guitar that seemed fitting for Powell’s masterpiece tribute to a fallen serviceman, “21 Rounds.” It is easily Powell’s best known song, and those in attendance are now the only ones who have that song recorded on CD.

Powell spoke of the tendency as a songwriter to like your latest songs the best, offering one of his newest tunes, “Poison Diamond,” written during a recent sound check after a conversation with a man who said his relationship troubles were because a woman “loves me too much.” It depicts Powell’s willingness and capability to find inspiration in a single phrase or moment, and nurture those small embers until they grow into the full flame of a song. He also expressed some unfounded trepidation that a live recording could go wrong if the audience en masse booed at the conclusion of a tune. However, as mentioned, Mike Powell is not an individual who chooses to pass up many opportunities. Thus, he implored the audience to agree to boo lustily at the conclusion of “I Wanna Go Back,” creating a hilarious moment that later caused raucous laughter when Powell and Hanus, (as well as this reviewer,) listened to the live CD on the drive home. Powell’s remarkable songwriting, engaging stage banter and audience rapport came through during the session, and are reflected in the crystal clear quality of the instantly produced CD from SubCat Music Studios.

  • Doctor Pocket to Celebrate Reunion at Funk ‘n Waffles with Band of Heroes and James Adamo

Doctor Pocket will celebrate their 15 year reunion show at Funk n Waffles in Syracuse on July 22, joined by James Adamo and Band of Heroes. In their 90s heyday, Doctor Pocket was one of the loudest and tightest rock bands in Central New York, with a solid following and the timeless live release Live at the Legendary Hungry Charley’s.

Doctor Pocket draws on a variety of influences, including Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Queen, The Allman Brothers, The Black Crowes and many more, and with these influences they melded together a deep sound with layered melodies that engage the audience fully; when they get into a pocket, they stay dialed in and keep rocking.

Guitarists Jim Adamo and Tom Binasco are rock guitarists in sync as they create grooves and have the powerful rhythm section of drummer Matt Belardinelli and bassist Brett Hobin (Syracuse bass veteran Steve Winston served as original bassist for DP). Combined, they are a mature rock band with Josh Farrell leading the charge on vocals with an inviting, resonating voice that brings the listener on a rock trip. The July 22 reunion show at Funk n Waffles starts at 9pm (doors at 8) and admission is $10 or $15 under 21. Don’t miss this show Syracuse!

  • Christian Lopez Band Brings Syracuse Fans Outside for Perfect Night of Music

Under the perfect evening sky, with the most gentle of breezes blowing through the amphitheater-like backyard venue, Syracuse music lovers welcomed Christian Lopez to New York.  Being introduced to his music for the first time, house party attendees were in for a treat from this 21 year old musician and his bandmates Jason Navo on bass and Cameron McClaren on drums.

Despite his age, this young man is a seasoned musician with more than 6 years on the road experience, playing in front of audiences of all sizes, winning them over one by one.  Raised in West Virginia, music was always a part of his family as his mother is a music teacher.  Encouraged by his parents and subjected to many country music greats  including Waylon, Willie, Johnny and Kris, the flavor of those influences as well as his personal favorites blend to become this eclectic mix in his songwriting and playing. Whether it’s a rock-a-billy tune, a slower ballad or an all out rock and roll number, audiences can’t get enough of him from the minute he starts playing and singing.

Listening to him, his voice had a smooth John Denver-ish tone with the ballads, however, as he played his rock numbers I felt him channeling Jerry Lee Lewis’s energy and Elvis’s prowess. Moving around the back yard to capture new angles, I constantly overheard the awe and appreciation from everyone in attendance.  I would be remiss not to mention his songwriting skills were top notch as well.  His setlist was riddled with these numbers, each as well written as the next.  Two covers were sung (“Hurricane”-Levon Helms and “Use Me” – Bill Withers), however, they were sung more like tributes than as covers as you can see below.

    https://youtu.be/GQQLwTcMf0g

Treating us to many numbers off the new upcoming album Red Arrow, produced by Marshall Altman, it’s hard to believe this 21 year old has already accumulated the skill set necessary to become a household name. One can only anticipate, as time goes on, the musical genius to come from this talented young man. Mark my words, he is an artist to remember.  Catching the eye of Rolling Stone at the American Music Fest in 2015, and artists such as Amy Helm at Cayamo in 2017, it’s apparent those in the business have already taken heed.  Booked already to partake in Rock Boat 2018, that would be one heck of a vacation and a way to be introduced to the talents of this young man, don’t ya think?

Setlist: 1972, Man I Was , Finish What You Started , Someday , Hurricane (Levon Helm cover) , All The Time, Between Us , Morning Rise, Swim, Silver Line , Don’t Wanna Say Goodnight , Use Me (Bill Withers cover) , Caramel, Say Goodbye , Will I See You Again, Steel On The Water

  • House Party with the Christian Lopez Band

The acclaimed Christian Lopez Band will make their Upstate New York debut on Saturday July 8 in Syracuse.

Lopez, 22 years old from West Virginia, was named best new artist by Rolling Stone Magazine at Americana Fest in 2015 and was a finalist on American Idol in 2013.

Christian Lopez Band shows are legendary because of high energy and a range of music which includes a mix of music from his debut album Onward, material from a forthcoming new album and covers of fun material. The band performs an amazing cover of the Bill Withers tune “Use Me Up,” The Beatles song “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” and Levon Helm’s “Hurricane” which he performed with Levon’s daughter Amy Helm on the 2017 Cayamo Cruise.

Because the Boilermaker Road Race is on Sunday morning, the show starts early at 5 PM.

Tickets are just $20 and include food and beverages. This is an all-ages show.

Stay up to do date and like the show on Facebook.

This will be a special evening and one of the best shows this year, don’t miss out.

  • Celtic Woman Voices of Angels Tour Lifts Central New York To a New High

Voices of Angels was a fitting title for the Celtic Woman tour that recently stopped in Syracuse at the Oncenter on June 21.

The three angelic vocalists on the tour were Susan McFadden, Mairéad Carlin, and Eabha McMahon, and together with the multi talented newcomer Tara McNeill on violin and harp, they melodically painted a picture of their homeland. This production once again outdid themselves putting together a show that highlighted the amazing harmonies of Celtic Woman and the phenomenal musicianship of the band and choir.  Playing many crowd favorites, their mix of traditional and popular music brought the crowd to their feet.

They now are winding down and heading home from their North American tour which included 90 cities and 94 performances.  I would like to leave you with one of my favorite numbers from the show, a sean dos song, “Sadhbh ní Bhruinneallaigh.”  Eabha McMahon’s performance of the this traditional tune brings you to the musical experience of the Irish culture in its truest form, the trad session.

Setlist: Mo Ghile Mear, My Heart Will Go On, Dúlman, Isle of Hope, Amazing Grace, Across the World, As She Moved Through the Fair, The Kesh Inn, Danny Boy, Nil Sén La, Téir Abhaile Riú, Orinoco Flow, For the Love of a Princess, Ave Maria, Walk Beside Me, Óro Sé Do Bheatha ‘Bhaile, Percussion Solo, The Voice, Sean Nos Song, Westering Home, Time to Say Goodbye, You Raise me Up and Parting Glass

  • Hearing Aide: Suffocation ‘…Of The Dark Light’

We all have heard of the many wonders of New York City. From the beautiful architecture of the towering skyscrapers to the world famous restaurants for those who desire nothing but the best in taste bud stimulation. But beneath the beauty of this majestic place lurks something ugly, distorted, and heavy; death metal! N.Y. has always been a generator of some of the best death metal bands since the birth of the genre. From bands like Immolation and Mortician, this city bleeds for it’s death metal community.  Now with the release of Suffocation’s latest blistering piece, ….of The Dark Light, it shows NYDM will never die!

Suffocation Of The Dark Light…Of The Dark Light (via Nuclear Blast is the eighth studio album from the NYDM legends. This is a long awaited follow-up from the band’s crushing 2013’s album Pinnacle of Bedlam (via Nuclear Records). Recorded at Full Force Studio with the expertise of Joe Cinecotta, you can bet those walls were rattling like a crazy mother from those devastating sonic assaults. Just by looking at the magnificent artwork cover by Collin Mark, the design will catch your attention. It features a beautiful humanoid in a dark blacken blue abyss, slowly becoming one with the unknown. You can just feel the hairs stand on end when you look at this artwork, knowing it will be one hell of a journey. The album starts off on a highly aggressive and technical foot with the track “Clarity Through Deprivation.” You can hear the quick precision from both Terrance Hobbs and Charlie Errigo finger work all across this sonic barrage!  It proves the young bands still can learn a few things from their death metal ancestors in perfect timing and song construction.
Like most old-school death metal fans, I need some deadly grooves to get my rotten corpse moving in the pit. Lucky for us, groove is not forgotten on this little gem! We have the track ‘Return To The Abyss’ to have you breaking some bones. This song is powered by the blood, sweat, and sacrifices of Eric Morotti (drums) and Derek Boyer (Bass) with their enriched flavor of rhythmic sauce! From the very start to the dreadful end, the track will make your neck muscles spasm and will cause one hell of a head rush. Prepare that icepack after blasting this beast!
Frank Mullen’s vocals are still more intense and demonic than any singer I know in the death metal genre. His vocals all over this album are perfectly executed with so much testosterone and energy, especially on the tracks “…Of The Dark Light” and “Return To The Abyss,”  it will melt your face so much that even Leatherface will need a backup!
With the legends in extreme metal going strong like Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, and Dying Fetus still vomitting out great albums, death metal will never die! I give this album 5 tombstones out of 5. Check out the band on tour right now and pick up this album at your local store or buy it through the official band site and to check out the tour dates for a show by you!
Key Tracks: Clarity Through Deprivation, Your Last Breaths, …Of The Dark Light

  • The Record Company Rocks the Westcott

“We’re the Record Company, and we play rock and roll.” This is how the Record Company’s lead vocalist/guitarist/harpist Chris Vos often introduces his band at the start of a performance. While said in an understated fashion, it is no understatement.

Throughout the nearly hour and a half performance at Syracuse’s Westcott Theater May 20, The Record Company proved time and again that they do indeed play rock and roll. Steeped in a blues tradition but still maintaining a contemporary rock sound, the Record Company is out to prove that rock is not dead.

Before The Record Company hit the stage, opening act, Nashville-based duo Smooth Hound Smith, won over the crowd early with some self-deprecating humor and foot stomping blues. The husband and wife duo, Zack and Caitlin Smith had a great stage presence and could easily have passed as the headliner on this night.

Zack Smith plays guitar, harmonica and foot drum as well as handling the majority of the vocals, a virtual one-man band. He has a country-blues feel with a touch of rockabilly. Caitlin Smith adds percussion and lush vocals with a bit of a Nashville touch and the occasional Janis Joplin wail to round out the Smooth Hound Smith sound.

The Record Company, Vos, Alex Stiff on bass/vocals and Elmira native Marc Cazorla on drums/keys are as cohesive a unit as you’ll find in music today. The rhythm section is tight and Vos is a multi-instrumental maestro. Vos’s bluesy vocal style was perfectly complemented by Stiff and Carzola’s harmonies all night.

One can derive many influences in the music of The Record Company – Delta and Chicago blues, gospel, mid-70s stadium rock and even hip hop. The latter was exhibited in a spirited, bluesy cover of the Beastie Boys “So What’cha Want” that had the near capacity crowd happily bouncing along.

Vos leans heavily on his weathered Fender lap steel at shows and for good reason, he made that thing sing, especially on the greasy blues dirge “Rita Mae Young.” His harmonica style, especially in the band’s single “Hard Day Comin’ Down” beckons Bob Dylan.

Speaking of Dylan, midway through the show, the band worked in a three-song acoustic mini-set, anchored by a scorching version of “Subterranean Homesick Blues.”

The set closed with Vos lying his acoustic guitar across his lap for lesson in the slide. Stiff and Cazorla kept the back beat while Vos furiously worked the guitar and later the harmonica on the appropriately titled, “The Burner.” Cazorla was often pulling double duty on his bass, sometimes playing it as a lead instrument as well as using a slide.

The show closed with a one-song encore, a new one from the band’s latest album. “In the Mood” is a blues, via Mod era Who, romp that ended the night on a high note, including crowd participation on the chorus. The band took a collective bow with appreciative smiles, the audience reciprocated, another audience won over. This is a band that is on to bigger things, dragging honest rock and roll along with it.

The Record Company Setlist: On the Move, Baby I’m Broken, Hard Day Coming Down, Night Games, Rita Mae Young, Feels So Good, Crooked City (acoustic), I’m Changing (acoustic), Subterranean Homesick Blues (acoustic) (Bob Dylan cover), Don’t Let Me Get Lonely, So What’cha Want (Beastie Boys cover), Turn Me Loose, Off the Ground, The Burner
    E: In the Mood
