Remember those glory days of rock n roll when such bands like Kansas, Bad Company, Blue Oyster Cult, and many more classic giants reigned supreme? Something about that sound and tone of those bands really made an impact on music history. So many active audiophiles know you can never appreciate the modern sounds we have now, without paying homage to the ones that set the classic rock standard. Yet, we keep on forgetting that type of sound still carries a large fan base. Even to this day we have radio stations, podcasts, and concerts all dedicated to that chapter of rock. Let me tell you though brother, that sound is still kicking and screaming! This proves to be the very case with a band hailing from the snowy land of Syracuse, Darkroom, whose textbook rock vibe will bring back that sound of the past and bring it to new light!
The album, Darkroom foundation is created by the hands of David Manzano (drums), David DiNiro (guitar/vocals), Jeff Brown (bass/vocals), Ronnie Dark (guitar/keyboards/vocals) and Steve Kratz (vocals). This motley group of guys know how to package something old and to make it as if it was brand new. The album presents itself with so many classic rock influences from all across the rock realm spectrum. With tracks like “Trouble” and “The Hunted,” the energy of that rebel rock hits you hard like a brass knuckled punch. The fact that “The Hunted” is actually about a famous serial killer in our area really gives it that nice tongue in cheek play with the lyrics. Manazo really can show you how he can make his kit come alive keeping that nice jazz and blues infused playing on the tracks. Let us not forget Brown’s bass playing pretty much hits in the same ball park paving the way with some hints of funk aspired basslines, keeping that rampant energy striving.
The guitar work from both DiNiro and Dark really gives the album a clean guitar style, which in this day in age is extremely missed in the modern rock era with great melodies with huge hints of progressive influences if you listen closely enough. With Kratz on main vocals, you really can hear the passion this guy has while presenting the final product. Sometimes I feel like listening to these tracks he could give some classic rock heavyweights some run for their money. If you enjoy groups like Bad Company, you will find these two tracks to be your gateway drug to something simply incredible.
If you are like me, a man who likes to enjoy a nice cold beer, sometimes you just gotta have the perfect tunes to enjoy that said beer. The band possesses many diverse elements which come alive on this album. They are able to create a very calming and at peace vibe on some tracks. Tracks like “Fly” and “Reflections” really carry that bar rock sound with great approach from the guys. “Reflections” has strong presence of The Eagles as it presents some great catchy lyricism and fabulous groovy sections. “Fly” has that type of energy that makes you just kinda want to put a quarter in the jukebox, order yourself a beer, and relax a bit after a tough day at work. The slow and steady style really makes this track one hell of a great song and with some of the most intriguing keyboard playing I heard in the last couple years from Dark. The keys shaping that ambient background really helps amp up that idea of just taking it easy.
In the end, it looks like that rebel rock attitude and perfected sound will continue to beat in the hearts of the fans. With Darkroom always finding new ways to make the material of the past interesting and relevant, I have no doubt these guys will not give up with that strong of a drive to keep on exploring new and old territory. Key Tracks: The Hunted, Fly, Trouble
The first single off the album, “Legs,” sets the alluring tone and foundation for the piece. It compounds a very dark and melancholy setting which is created by Cash’s mental state and musical influences. The melody really resonates inside the listener. You feel like you are being seduced by something wicked, but the temptation is very much there with the need to explore deeper into that realm. The sound of the drums sounds like your very heart is about to give out with each passing second. The bass plays with that idea well as it creates a very soothing, yet uncomfortable tone. I feel what really gives this track the passion and drive the most is the guitar combined with Cash’s vocals. The high screams are vicious and the more calming vocals really do play on that high emotional factor. It does feel as if you are fighting to be both good and evil at the same time with some inner demon. It is both a demon and an angel that you will find yourself becoming with “Legs” as the puppet master.
Deadrider is a heavy metal and thrash inspired group containing the talents of John V Bustos (lead singer/lead guitar), Antonio Labbe (drums), Michael V Visconti (guitar and backing vocals) and Mike Losert (bass). If you go to the local shows in the area, I bet you will meet these rocking dudes! With so many great influences on the album from the late 80s and early 90s, the best track that encompasses these elements would be the track. “Heavy Metal Deadride.” With amazing guitar work with searing guitar solos from both Bustos and Visconti , your ear will pick up the how the track is deeply rooted into bands like Anvil and early Iron Maiden days. With a dangerous cocktail of power and aggression, this jam becomes a whiplash worthy type of track; prepare for bangovers! The melodies are infused with g-force speed and allows this piece to come alive. It will eat you up! The vocals will create a fire in your blood as if it was your last ride. Ready for their last ride and hot damn it makes it addicting. With such speed you can see this element on other tracks on the release like “Brainwashed” to keep you windmilling for days.
After The Storm is a studio project shaped by the hands of Matt Swistak and Pat McFeely. Both are very talented guitar players in their own right. Seeing how two great minds can create such a monstrous beast of a sonic attack, you will get lost in the music as much as I did! The album has such powerful influences drawn from many melodic death metal acts like Soilwork and Solution .45, to name a few inspiring groups. The track “The Awakening” goes for the kill right out of the gate. The finger work of both guitar players are displayed with such beauty and malice. It has the right amount of melody and sheer relentlessness power. For me it is hard to get into modern melodic death metal bands because they focus mostly on either more of the harmony driven riffs and forget about the more destructive fueled constructs. The boys although, have done a wonderful job balancing the two sides that make melodic death metal amazing. You see this in other tracks on the EP like “Rise as They Fall” and “Stand Unified.” These guys really know how to produce a great sound with perfect form!
Of course the influences on the band’s bandcamp does state they have an appreciation for Beherit’s Drawning Down the Moon LP. The many influences they bring from good old dirty sludge riffs melded with black metal tremolo picking, and sludge hammer like drumming just make this EP stand out among the other contenders in 2017. With Neil Jameson on vocals and the main lyrical writer and Jenks Miller on basically everything else (guitar, bass, drums, keys, synth), this duo has found a great way to come together on this piece of material. The opening song, “The Scourge And The Gestalt,” is rich in that crusty yet groovy type of guitar playing and you will find yourself lost in its splendor. The lo-fi quality of the track and album brings back the raw power of distortion, which I feel is where metal still dominates being the best genre for this type of approach when it comes to production style.
Profane Nexus is the follow up from 2014’s Dirges of Elysium ( released via Listenable Records). With this latest release mixed and mastered by Dan Swano at Unisound Studios, most known for helping the Swedish death metal scene with such groups like Entombed, you can bet already the album will have that filthy muddied sound we love to drown ourselves in. The album starts with the blistering guitar works from McEntee and Lombardozzi on the opening track “Muse.” With the familiar down tuned style of the band, it contains both groove orientated soundscape combined with clearly mastered technical skills of both guitar players. You can feel the riffs gorge on your remnants with each passing second!
Back in January 2017, Wintersun announced they were finished recording the newest album and you can bet the metal community was set on fire. Through every metal forum I was on to my Facebook feed, the flavor that everyone wanted to taste the most this year was Wintersun. Upon them releasing this album, you bet metalheads world wide were eating this up like the mead from Thors goblet! The first track of the album, “Awaken From The Dark Slumber (Spring),” opens up with such galloping force, it will overtake you in mere seconds. Jari Mäenpää (vocals/guitar) has the perfect mold for beauty and relentless attitude with both his clean vocals and growls. Mäntysaari joins Mäenpää on guitar to help propel the song on an ever ending journey of soaring guitar riffs as well as very delicate yet masculine precision. Much like many great progressive metal bands, such as Dream Theater and Symphony X, you will find the guitar work is mesmerizing as much as the lyrical content. The visual of dreams fading and life not returning back to the lands, this track will take you on a brand new journey of rebirth and darkness.
They started casting evil incantations with their debut album, Beg Upon The Light (released 2012 via Occulture), the band was eagerly accepted in the doom underground. Now it has been two years since their last spellbound of a record Firewalker (released 2015 via Shadow Kingdom Records). They came back from the crypt to cast one more feverishly dangerous of an album, No Warning (released via Shadow Kingdom Records), the doom rockers have once again unleashed hell and we love it!
The first track off this album “Better Living Through Hennessy” goes from 0-60 in less than 2 seconds into the album. The guitar styles of Helmer and Coffey will take you by storm. Their funky yet hardcore approach for this track is nothing but full of life! You will have yourself singing along with the lyrics while moving those two left feet of yours. Let me tell ya, nothing beats a good old fashioned song you can find yourself singing to in the car. This song is one of those jams I can see the whole venue singing along to with a couple drinks in hand!
