The penultimate gig kept up with tradition of openers from both the 28th and 29th, \u00a0kicking off with an acapella rendition of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cCarolina,\u201d leaving a sardine-packed and immensely energetic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegarden.com\/\">MSG<\/a> crowd silent and still. Following the <a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/site\/2016\/12\/29\/weve-only-just-begun-a-phish-night-one-recap\/\">28th\u2019s acapella opener of \u201cThe Star Spangled Banner\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/site\/2016\/12\/30\/we-keep-it-rollin-night-two-of-phish-at-msg\/\">the 29th\u2019s \u00a0\u201cSweet Adeline,\u201d<\/a> \u201cCarolina\u201d found Trey, Mike, Page and Jon digging deep in their archives and offering their first bust out of the night&#8211;having not played the tune since 2003 at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greensboro Coliseum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phish.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-267945 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Olker_Phish_MSG-12_30_2016-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"phish december 30 2016\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-wp-pid=\"267945\" \/>Phish<\/a> \u201cBlazed On,\u2019 through the second set with crowd-favorite \u201cThe Moma Dance,\u201d \u201cGumbo\u201d and a fitting choice of \u201cCities\u201d which had the whole building hypnotized on foot. \u2018The Old Home Place,\u201d eased into a \u201cBathtub Gin\u201d \u00a0scorcher, complete with arena rock vibes, dense jams and enchanting licks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-267943 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Olker_Phish_MSG-12_30_2016-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"phish december 30 2016\" width=\"1125\" height=\"900\" data-wp-pid=\"267943\" \/>\u201cThings People Do\u201d served as the first \u201cBig Boat\u201d performance of the run, before launching into \u201cMy Friend, My Friend.\u201d The first in a triad of <em>Joy<\/em> tracks sprinkled throughout the night, came fully equipped with face-melting jams and moody red and black lighting. The next track found every phan in the house shouting \u201cWilson\u201d across a sea of wide eyes and color spectrum donut lights. A light-hearted \u201cSugar Shack\u201d delighted the audience as the night\u2019s second track hailing from <em>Joy<\/em>, before a fully-welcomed \u201cYou Enjoy Myself.\u201d Complete with trampoline bounces and all, YEM closed out a magnificent first set for a thankful MSG crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-267947 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Olker_Phish_MSG-12_30_2016-2.jpg\" alt=\"phish december 30 2016\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-wp-pid=\"267947\" \/>The second set magic quickly rolled out with a funky take on \u201cTweezer\u201d which led into The Who\u2019s 1969 Tommy track, \u201cSparks.\u201d A crowd sing-a-long was incited on \u201cGhost,\u201d until the <em>Joy<\/em> trifecta came to an end with \u201cLight,\u201d as things dove into a lengthy, swampy \u201cParty Time\u201d jam. \u00a0Ease washed over the crowd with a soft take on \u201cWading in the Velvet Sea\u201d just ahead of closing out the second set with another cover, The Osborne Brother\u2019s \u201cRocky Top.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Played last time in New York for a SPAC crowd, Phish encored with The Velvet Underground\u2019s \u201cRock n\u2019 Roll.\u201d It felt more appropriately placed this time, however, in the city that front man Lou Reed often based his music on. A transcendent segue led into a fiercely received \u201cTweezer Reprise,\u201d which closed night three with energy spiking through the roof.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-267944 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Olker_Phish_MSG-12_30_2016-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-wp-pid=\"267944\" \/>Between page\u2019s keyboard kinetics, phishman\u2019s double down drumming, gordon bumpin\u2019 bass slaps and trey\u2019s fireworks across the fretboard, phish left little to the imagination.
