{"id":245,"date":"2016-03-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-11T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/2016\/2016\/03\/11\/hearing-aide-howardian-a-smurf-at-lands-end\/"},"modified":"2016-03-11T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-11T00:00:00","slug":"hearing-aide-howardian-a-smurf-at-lands-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/2016\/2016\/03\/11\/hearing-aide-howardian-a-smurf-at-lands-end\/","title":{"rendered":"Hearing Aide: Howardian &#8216;A Smurf At Land&#8217;s End&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-104173 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Howardian-Cover-500x500.jpg\" alt=\"Howardian Cover\" width=\"311\" height=\"311\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooklyn-based band Howardian has released <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their sophomore album,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Smurf At Land\u2019s End. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group records and operates under the name Howardian, but the band is fronted by and more commonly identified by Ian Vanek. \u00a0It\u2019s seemingly more common for artists to brand themselves with the musicians they work with, even when the bulk of the recognition and creative distinction stems from that lead singer or performer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Howardian has labeled themselves as an \u201ca<a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/2024\/04\/30\/the-driver-era-rock-out-in-port-chester\/\">rt rock<\/a>\u201d band, and that genre is defined by noticeable influences from classical music and\/or music that features experimental avant-garde styles. \u00a0One listen through the album and the unique, experimental nature of the compilation is quite evident. This is a prime example of genre bending: pop, hip-hop, punk, and rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samples of pre-recorded voices of short monologues give the tracks more meaning and allow listeners to identify any potential significance for the inclusion. \u00a0It\u2019s hard to pinpoint who is speaking in these voiceovers;\u00a0they could be from noteworthy individuals or events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In \u201cOver the Laptop,\u201d you can clearly hear Vanek\u2019s vocals doubled with two separate takes. This technique gives the track a fuller sound, but also gives it an indie flair with the vocal pitches not 100% congruent with each other. \u00a0The indie-esque sound is reinforced with the percussion; the snare sounds authentic and not of the best quality. \u00a0\u201cFront Street\u201d uses a video game power-up sound every two measures which is a unique timbre that nicely juxtaposes the heavily distorted power chords throughout. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m The Ocean\u201d is quite repetitive in nature and it\u2019s important to note that it&#8217;s purely instrumental. \u00a0The repetitive melodic lines make listeners feel like they are sifting through a monotonous flow of ocean waves. \u00a0\u201cCap\u2019n Such n\u2019 Such\u201d is interesting because the instruments are playing a pretty standard of a rock groove, but the syncopated hook spelling out the band\u2019s name is a bit hip-hop eqsue. \u201cFulton Mall\u201d is the song that is closest to a standard pop song due to its immensely repetitive nature and backing vocals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There doesn\u2019t seem to be one central theme in terms of album\u2019s subject matter, but there is a distinct flow in terms of style that makes the album work. \u00a0The instrumental parts of the tracks are not overwhelmingly challenging. \u00a0The musicianship is evident, but each song is quite simply outlined with basic beats and chord progressions. \u00a0The synth is a crucial element in almost all of the tracks as it breaks up the streams of vocal phrases with a simple top line.
