  • Just the Tip is Night 1 of the 3 Day Halloween Indoor Fest at Anthology

    Just the Tip is the start of a three day Halloween event at Anthology in Rochester, NY. Kicking off on Thursday, October 27, this ALL AGES show, featuring regional bands and headliners each night for a sensational music experience.

    On Thursday, Level 7, Joe Driscoll, Funknut and Subsoil perform sets throughout the night, performing from 8:30 PM until 2 AM. Save money by purchasing the three-night ‘megaticket’ and enjoy PBR specials at Just the Tip.

    Friday, October 28 features Thunder Body, Danielle Ponder and the Tomorrow People, with Saturday night performances from The Blind Owl Band, The Honey Smugglers, and Mulberry Soul. Friday tickets are $20 and Saturday tickets are $16.

    Known for their high-energy live shows, Subsoil is lyric-driven live Hip-Hop music. Subsoil’s performance wields a keen edge of razor-sharp lyricism, with equal emphasis on tight grooves and furious improvisations within a funky dance aesthetic.

    Funknut formed in 2006 when Tony Gallicchio and Tristan Greene started playing together as a key and drum duo. Since then, Funknut has expanded and has been blessed to play with a rotating cast of talented musicians with Tristan and Tony as the core. In 2009, Sean McLay became a permanent member of the band holding down the low end and making things even funkier than before. In 2010, good friend Paul McArdle joined in on the guitar. Fans of improvisation, each Funknut show is different from the next.

    Joe Driscoll was born in Syracuse, New York. He performs solo, and uses recorded loops of his own beatboxing and live looping using a sampler to fuse hip-hop, reggae, soul, folk and roots rock. During 2007 and 2008, Driscoll has toured with Dirty Pretty Things, Regina Spektor, Coldcut, and The Sugar Hill Gang at events in the US and Europe.

    Level 7 (Skribe & DJ 2way) are a hip-hop duo who have been blessed to share the stage with bands such as Mosaic Foundation, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Thunderbody, Subsoil, Sophistafunk, Danielle Ponder and TheTomorrow People, and Cha Cha & the Ndor Band.

  • Eastbound Throwdown Music Festival Coming to Salem, NY in September

    Eastbound Jesus has announced the 2016 Eastbound Throwdown music festival in Salem, NY. Featuring a lineup of Americana, Bluegrass and Northern Rock bands from around the state, the first year of this festival looks to be a hollerin’ good time.

    Eastbound Jesus, complete with shredding banjo, sweet vocal harmonies, ballads and fast paced rocking tunes, comes home grown from the small town of Greenwich, NY. The EBJ sound is well known to the Upstate region with their distinctive “Northern Rock” sound.

    Alt-country rockers the Mallett Brothers Band, Saranac Lake’s Blind Owl Band, folk rockers Driftwood, the North & South Dakotas and the Spectacular Average Boys round out the two day event held just during a gorgeous close to the summer.

  • Sterling Stage Folkfest Brought in the Crowd, 12th Annual Event

    This year’s 12th annual Folkfest took place at Sterling Stage Kampitheater in Sterling over Memorial Day Weekend and brought in more than a 1,000 attendees. Featuring many great bands, vendors and artists, the location and crowd made for a fantastic weekend in the sun.

  • Fridays in April at Parish Public House, Presented by NYS Music

    NYS Music is proud to announce the lineup for Fridays in April at Parish Public House, one of Albany’s premier music venues with a taste of New Orleans infused throughout the beer selection, decor and menu.

    April 8 – The Deadbeats

    Playing the music of The Grateful Dead, Phish, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin and so much more! The Deadbeats are based in New Paltz/Albany, NY, and have been one of the hardest working bands in the Northeast since their inception in 1993.  In all the years of playing together, they have amassed a large and loyal following of fans who appreciate the open ended, participatory nature of their performances. Along with a virtually inexhaustible repertoire of cover tunes, they have a considerable amount of original material. The Deadbeats are actually able to please most of the people most of the time. The Deadbeats play the first Friday of every month at the Parish Public House and every Wednesday night at The Low Beat.

    April 15 – Blind Owl Band

    Hailing from Saranac Lake, NY, in the heart of the Adirondack mountains, The Blind Owl Band has been creating what they call Freight Train String Music since 2010. And a freight train it truly is. Although the quartet’s sound is rooted in traditional stringed instruments (guitar, basses, banjo and mandolin), their music surges forward with the strength and power of a hundred-ton diesel locomotive. Songs barrel down the tracks with momentum and intensity normally found in much heavier, heavily amplified music. They’ve played on almost every festival east of the Mississippi and shared the stage with countless artists across all genres of the musical spectrum. Looking ahead into 2016, the band will begin recording their as-yet-untitled third full length album in early spring, with an eye toward a mid-summer release. This freight train has no one conductor but four shovel boys pushing the limits of their engine night after night, so climb aboard and get ready for a one-of-a-kind ride.

    April 22 – MOVE Music Festival

    The MOVE Music Festival is a Indian ledge Music Group production. The festival will consist of approximately 100 acts performing at venues across Albany, New York on April 22-24 2016. The main purpose of this event is to give exposure to regional talent through live performances at select venues and provide musicians with insight on how to conduct their careers in today’s independent music scene. Music starts at 6pm on Friday, April 22 with multiple bands performing throughout the evening. Check back for updates when the schedule is released.

    April 29 – Lord Electro

    Hailing from Albany, NY Lord Electro quickly emerged on the scene in 2015 with their organic high energy Live-Electro/trance music. This has proven to generate quite the dance party! After making a name for themselves with their first show at Bellstock 21 LE played a run of Summer and Fall dates in markets across NY and New England including opening for The New Deal in Saratoga, NY this past November. With experienced musicians Dan Gerken (Timbre Coup, Groovestick) and Steve Mink (Digital Dharma) behind the tones and the addition of Jordan “George” LeFleur on the drumkit this trio is a force to be reckoned with and a magnificent display of organic improv on the dance floor.

  • Anthology Will Host the Rochester Revival

    In early March, the new venue in the East End of Rochester, Anthology, will host a two-day celebration of roots and Americana music called Rochester Revival 2016.

    Pennsylvania’s emergent jam-grass heroes Cabinet will return to Rochester to headline the first evening of music on Friday, March 4. Also on the bill that night are fellow ‘grass and dust-kickers The Blind Owl Band from Saranac Lake and The Prickers from Naples.

    The party continues early Saturday afternoon for a full day and night of ear-pleasing, foot-stomping fun. Oyster Bay’s electro-prog instrumental powerhouse TAUK will provide a massive sonic cleanse when they close out the mini-festival late Saturday night.

    Leading up to the grand finale will include the introduction of two new Rochester groups and one of the oldest and most beloved bands of Rochester. Aaron Lipp, who has played keys for Robert Randolph, Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad and the Campbell Brothers, has assembled a new band which will play their premiere performance at this event. Another Dub Squad player, guitarist Dylan Savage, will also introduce a new band with Wil McKenna of RootsCollider called the Medicinals. Rochester’s very own gospel legends The Campbell Brothers are slated to bring their classic sacred steel style that is tried, true and always a great time. Other announced bands include Josh Rollins, Personal Blend and the Honey Smugglers, with more to be announced soon.

    Mark March 4 and 5 down in your calendars. It’s a weekend that will showcase music from all across New York state including a dip into our neighbor Pennsylvania, so make plans now to come and show your support. Tickets are on sale now at the Anthology website. Admission is $12 for Friday and $24 for Saturday, or $32 gets you in for the whole weekend. A great deal for a great deal of music!

  • The Blind Owl Band Coming to The Westcott Theater February 6

    The Blind Owl Band, hailing from Saranac Lake, a small town nestled in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, are coming to The Westcott Theater on February 6, with local musicians Chris James, Mama G and the Spittin’ Sirens from Syracuse, NY.

    The Blind Owl Band will be bringing their four stringed freight train to Central NY as they kick off their 2016 tour taking them all over the East Coast. With Arthur Buezo (guitar, vocals), Christian Cardiello (double bass/fretless bass), Eric Munley (mandolin, vocals) and James Ford (banjo, vocals).

    Opening artists Chris James and Mama G shared the spotlight with The Blind Owl Band at Sterling Stage Kampitheater, in Sterling NY at the String Fling Festival 2015. The Spittin’ Sirens are sure bring a new energy to the stage and get the crowd dancing with Chris James (aka Davey Jonesin’, guitar/vocals), Mama G (aka Silva Tooth, mandolin/vocals), Foxy Rutkowski (aka Shipwreck, percussion/vocals) and Heidi Jane Kessel (aka The Kraken, one string bass banjo).

  • Update: Thunder Body to Replace GPGDS for Waterhole Reopening Party

    Update 2/11/2016: Due to a member being sick, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad canceled their performance scheduled for the Waterhole’s reopening party Friday night. But never fear, Thunder Body is here!

    The eight-piece Thunder Body, from Rochester, features founding members of Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad Matt and Rachel and will headline the Friday night show in place of GPGDS. According to Thunder Body’s Facebook page, the band “dabbles in American roots, funk, soul, dub, afro beat, and more.”

    Local group Painted Sol and Rochester funk/soul four-piece Funknut are still scheduled to open the evening. Doors are at 8 p.m. and the show is scheduled to begin at 9.

    The ‘hole opens at noon Friday, and they’re hinting at some sort of live music surprise at 1 p.m., likely a little taste of Blind Owl! Don’t miss it! It’s gonna be a great Saranac Lake Winter Carnival weekend!

    Update 2/4/2016: The Waterhole has announced that funk/soul group West End Blend will play upstairs directly after the parade. The 10-piece band from Hartford, Connecticut, will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, directly after the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Gala Parade wraps up.

    A local musician plans to revive the currently closed Waterhole for the legendary Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

    This year’s Saranac Lake Winter Carnival runs Feb. 5-14, and it just wouldn’t be Carnival without music at the Waterhole.

    Luckily, Eric Munley of the Blind Owl Band, along with girlfriend Kiki Sarko, has taken over operations at the hallowed venue, and it will open temporarily Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12 and 13. The Blind Owl Band will headline a show at 10 p.m. that Saturday, which is Parade Day – the biggest day of the Carnival. Everyone comes out for the Winter Carnival Gala Parade, then hits the town and celebrates for the rest of the day.

    The upstairs will be open for free directly after the parade, and Munley is still working on finding an act for that time slot. But later on that day, Maryland-based two-piece band Swampcandy will open for The Blind Owl Band in a show that is set to begin at 10 p.m. and will cost $10.

    On Friday, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad will headline. Funknut and Painted Sol will join them.

    Munley and Sarko will operate the two days during Carnival on a temporary liquor license, then apply for a full one after the Carnival madness subsides. They expect to open the establishment in full sometime in March.

    Due to the temporary license, only the upstairs bar will be operating during Winter Carnival, though the downstairs will be open to customers sans bar.

    The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival began as a one-day event in 1897, put together by patients who had come to the Adirondack village to cure from tuberculosis. It was intended to get a break from the winter’s chill and to promote outdoor sports and games. Today, it’s grown to a 10-day festival that includes sports, games for kids, an ice palace and lots of live music. The whole town comes together and celebrates in one of the best weeks of the year.

    The Winter Carnival theme for 2016 is “Superheroes and Villains,” so start working on your costumes now!
