    Hearing Aide: Childish Gambino ‘Awaken, My Love!’

    It’s a cultivation of everything interesting about music. There’s no other way to describe it because there are so many influences, some that the majority of his followers probably don’t know exist. But if it were to be described in a genre, it’d be something along the lines of this tongue twister: Psychedelic funk, rock and R&B with hints of new-age rap and electronic undertones. Unfortunately, he hasn’t created something revolutionary, he’s recreated the sound of the most beloved musicians of all time, and missed the mark on a track or two, but nonetheless has brought back one of the great forgotten sounds of music.

    It’s nothing like his older works which were heavily influenced by modern rap. But it makes for the perfect platform on which to build a fun, but very familiar sound. This is not to say his prior albums were simple, but they lacked instrumental color and were driven lyrically. Before the song-by-song analysis begins, some background knowledge is needed to understand how talented Donald Glover really is.

    He is not a stranger to the arts: He had two full albums and a few single releases prior to this one, he appears as Troy Barnes on Community as well as a starring role in Atlanta, a series which he created. He will also soon star as a young Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars movie. Point is, the guy knows what he’s doing and he does it pretty well. But of course, such a drastic change in his falsetto will result in a few quirks, because as stated before, this album is nothing close to what he released in 2013-14.

    Almost every track has the funky hooks of the classic 70’s funk bands but with the unpredictable musical direction of Zappa and even the ones that lack a little bit of complexity can still have some value to them.

    The first track is a bit misleading, especially if a listener reads this review first. It’s called “Me and Your Mama” and it can be interpreted as a transition into this genre. It starts with a simple, spacey trap modern rap beat, similar to his former albums, that suddenly drops into a completely different genre. It’s dramatic enough that it may sound like the next song on a shuffled Spotify playlist. The second part of the song is synonymous to that of Pink Floyd, with a slow, swaying groove, a female chorus ringing out in the background and some wailing guitar, that all fades out into something like Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain” with echoing drums, and droning keys in the back. It’s an intense and perfect introduction to this album.

    “Have Some Love” and “Boogieman” have strong funk influences, with some tricky drumming, catchy breakdowns and that angelic chorus, all garnished with the perfect amount of spaciness. As stated before though, the sound is eerily similar to the funk Gods of the 70’s. This is not to say that he’s not a creative person, he just hasn’t created anything revolutionary here, but his mind is in the right place.

    “Zombies” is one of the tracks that may have “missed the mark.” It’s just weird. There isn’t a lot of musical complexity to it making the lyrics stand out more. But they’re not about anything deep or inspirational. It’s about zombies. “All I see is zombies, feeding all around us, all they eat are people… We’re eating you for profit… there is no safe place to hide.” He’s most likely not talking about The Walking Dead type of creature, but the lack of lyrical eloquence kind of ruins this song. That and it sound like he has a stuffy nose when he’s singing. But they can’t all be winners, as the saying goes.

    “Riot” comes next and brings back the technical funk heard at the beginning of the album, but isn’t necessarily a rioting song. It is still fantastic and fun to listen to though. “Redbone” was one of the singles released before the full album and was the most listened to track on the album according to Spotify. This is a fairly unique one, a little low on energy but it is also a love song, and pretty good one at that. It builds up nicely and has very colorful instrumentation making this a key track.

    As if there weren’t enough hard left turns, “California” pops up next and again gives the impression that the listener hit the shuffle button by accident. It’s a pretty adorable track that sounds like Jason Mraz, Sublime and Glover had a kid…. A really weird kid. It’s a tight sound with a strange association of instruments, including what sounds like glass bottles being blown into. It’s a key track not because everyone will love it, but it just further shows how Glover is taking a totally new direction with his music.

    Glover has got the nail into the board, but he isn’t striking it on the head just yet. At least he’s on the right board though. This must have been a fun project for him, and it’s very obvious that he’s not through with rap, but he’s moving onto more complex projects. Unfortunately, his old audience may not follow him, but he will undoubtedly gain some more attention with this collection.

  • Nitro Fest, featuring Beats Antique, Ignites Longmont, CO

    In retrospect, I am a bit surprised there was no carnival barker in candy cane-striped pants with a handlebar mustache shouting, “Step Right Up, Ladies and Gentlemen!” There was the obvious, the circus tent. And the carnie stilt walkers, acrobats and aerialists. But it wasn’t a circus. It was a beer festival. Or was it?

    Last week, local Colorado brewers, Left Hand Brewing Company, sponsored their annual Nitro Beer festival on the lawn of an open park in Longmont. There were long lines of people holding shot glasses of nitrogen infused craft beers from several craft brewers around the country. But that is where the resemblance to typical beer fests ended. Left Hand instead threw a vaudevillesque party in which every participant was in formal masquerade/steampunk attire. There were fire performers, jugglers, hoopers, and acrobats hanging from fabric attached to the high tent ceiling. And there was Beats Antique.  Their unique blend of Old World gypsy electronica, along with the dizzying visuals from fire and acrobat performances by Lunar Fire and Fractal Tribe, transformed a beer promotional event into a bewitching evening of stylish costumes, art and music.

    Beats Antique closed out the evening on an intimately-sized stage while celebrating the birthday of their percussionist, Tommy Cappel.

    Punctuated with a belly dancing stage show and throbbing gypsy beats, the stage shuddered with gale-force energy from inspired performers and rabid fans, jumping and clawing at the stage. Needless to say, I didn’t spend much time in beer lines for refills. The circus was in town, and I sure didn’t want to miss any of the razzle and dazzle. The Nitro Fest last week was the greatest show on earth of beer festivals.

  • Formula 5 was ‘The Band That Could’ at Owsley’s Golden Road in Boulder, CO

    For a while on Saturday, October 8, the four intrepid members of the Albany based jamband Formula 5, in the middle of their first tour of Western states, thought they’d be trapped in a “The Little Engine That Couldn’t” scenario with their trademark 70’s tour van that may well have driven off the set of the disco-era cop show, Starsky and Hutch.  The trouble began about 40 miles south of Boulder as they headed from a tour stop in Taos, New Mexico. The van engine sputtered to stop. From that moment, the engine stopped repeatedly in ever shortening distances. But they chugged and chugged until finally, at the last stoplight, the band was able to safely push their ride into a parking space in front of their intended destination, the aptly named Owsley’s Golden Road, named after the Grateful Dead’s longtime tour manager and longtime acid expert par excellance.

    Quickly, Formula 5 became “The Little Band That Could, and Did.” Despite the vehicle trouble, the band wasted no time ripping into a collection of original melodies that spun into robust jams laced with the occasional harmonizing lyrics. Even with extended improvisations, Formula 5 didn’t waste notes as they chewed their way out of a paper bag of vinyl musical traditions including funk, jazz, and psychedelic rock. They weren’t just the little band that could. They were the band that did. And then some.

    Their tour rolls into Columbus, OH on Thursday, October 14, Athens, OH on Friday, October 15 and Scranton, PA on October 16.

  • Chris Duffy Returns to New York with The Magic Beans

    Chris Duffy, bassist for The Magic Beans out of Nederland, CO, returns home to New York this weekend for three shows – Thursday in Albany at The Hollow, Friday in NYC at American Beauty and Saturday late night at Catskill Chill Music Festival. And Duffy is quite excited to be back home.

    “It’s been a treat to come back and see East Coast family and friends. That’s the great thing about touring around; it’s a great time to reconnect with people, those who you miss a lot. Albany was so kind and welcoming to Dirty Paris’ music, so I can’t wait until The Magic Beans can have that kind of relationship with the area and in the Northeast.”

    Brooklyn born and a graduate of Guilderland High School, Duffy formed Dirty Paris in 2008 with Dmitriy Bolotny, Thomas Lafond and Rob Morrison, performing throughout the greater Northeast into 2013. Dirty Paris developed a strong following in the region, drawn by the progressive and psychedelic elements in their modern jamband sound.

    An Albany native until early 2015, Chris worked in production and lightning design work, getting to experience another side of the music industry, gaining insight towards the bigger picture, while working towards a music degree. Then in 2015, Duffy headed west to Los Angeles, working as a concert tech at The Greek Theater and Hollywood Bowl, and living with Dmitriy of Dirty Paris.

    Then, in Duffy learned The Magic Beans, a jamband out of Nederland, CO, were auditioning bassists. He would join them for his first show on bass in Boulder, CO, in January of this year, capping a cross country journey in pursuit of music.

    Duffy knew of The Magic Beans prior to joining them, thanks to his time in Dirty Paris. “I’d been on festival lineups with The Beans, but never saw them. They’re a touring jamband in the scene that I really liked, and it seemed there was some energy growing, and I felt that I could hop in on that and contribute.

    It’s one thing to start a group from scratch from Day One like Dirty Paris, and having done that, it was nice to jump into a band that already had some momentum. For me to be traveling the country playing funky jam music is just want I want to be doing. And being based out of Colorado, given that I wanted to move there in the next few years, I knew it was exactly what I needed to do.”

    Duffy classifies himself as a “funk/groove player who loves to get out there and explore in improvisation, where we don’t really know whats going to happen.” It was for this reason that Duffy knew The Magic Beans were a perfect fit. ” When I auditioned, and went to the one and only Beans show I went to before I was a member of the band, the crowd was buzzing and so supportive of the band, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. The music is fun and danceable, and there is an element, the lyrics, that come from the heart.

    In addition to joining The Magic Beans comes the bonus of your own festival, Beanstalk. Held since 2013, Beanstalk is a The Beans own festival, and attracts a growing crowd each yeah, thanks in part to their fans support and an attractive lineup. Duffy recalls his first Beanstalk, “Looking at the past and this year’s lineup, we had Electron and The New Deal and bands that I had been looking up to for years, so it was a chance to jump in and surreal to see what was going to happen while being closely involved with a festival that has your band’s namesake; it’s an incredible thing and we’re excited about next year.”

    The Magic Beans perform Thursday night at The Hollow with Space Carnival, then head to New York City to perform at American Beauty on Friday with The US Americans and Red Velvet. They’ll then perform late night at 2:30am in Club Chill at Catskill Chill Music Festival.

  • Hearing Aide: Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda ‘All the Little Things’

    Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda’s latest album All the Little Things, recorded at Applehead Studios in Woodstock, NY, is one of the most diverse albums to hit the record stores in some time. Covering styles ranging from ‘80s rock, to bluegrass, to jazz, to Broadway musical, to Bing Crosby/Frank Sinatra era music, listening to this album is a bit like listening to a playlist on shuffle. Able to switch effectively from its dreamy start with “I Stayed Home,” to the big band brass sounds on “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You,” to the traditional folk style of “But It Don’t Worry Me,” the band showcases its brilliant versatility.

    Made up of a core group of extremely talented and hard-working Colorado-based musicians, including Pete Pidgeon himself on lead vocals and guitar, Glenn Patcha on a variety of keyboards and the accordion, Justin Guip on drums, Catherine Popper on upright and electric bass, these musicians are brilliant enough to have been able to attract and collaborate with some pretty impressive guests on their latest effort. In fact, on the album’s third track “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You,” none other than Levon Helm is featured during one of his last studio performances! (You have to be darn good to be able to put that on your resumé!) On the tracks featuring guest musicians, the band really allowed the influences from their guests’ respective bands to come through, with “Tonight I’ll Be Staying With You” sounding particularly reminiscent of The Band, “The Ways We Change” featuring a more twangy sound most likely influenced by Chris Pandolfi of The Infamous Stringdusters, and the funkier style present on “The Wind and the Lover” in great part due to the help of Ryan Zoidis from Lettuce.

    Pete Pidgeon has an amazing vocal range, both in terms of notes he can hit and styles he covers. His voice sounds like a cross between Ryan Adams, Jackie Greene, and Toy Caldwell, lead singer of Marshall Tucker Band, if you can imagine that.  Joined by his bandmates’ singing on several of the tunes, as well as guest female vocalist Sarah Perrotta (who hails from right here in the Hudson Valley), the harmonies are uncomplicated yet gorgeous. Glenn Patcha deserves a round of applause for the incredible range of sounds and styles that come out of his keyboards, taking the listener on a musical journey effectively changing the mood from song to song during its constant changes of style, providing a solid foundation for the rest of the band to build upon. To top it all off, Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda were joined by the incredible brass sounds of The Two Dolla Crack Horns.

    On Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda’s latest album All the Little Things, no two songs sounded at all the same, yet they all seemed to fit together extremely well. It will appeal to people from across the musical spectrum, and give listeners the chance to effortlessly give other genres a chance. And you wouldn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to hear Levon Helm during one of his last studio performances now, would you?!

  • Chris Brown Taken Into Custody After Home Gun Incident, Posts Bail

    Chris Brown just can’t help himself, as he finds himself in trouble again. NBC News reports that the Hip Hop and R&B singer was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department after law enforcement showed up to Browns house with a warrant. An unidentified woman claimed that Brown had threatened her with a gun.

    The early morning incident happened when the unidentified woman claimed that Brown had pointed a gun at her before she left his gated estate in Tarzana. Police received a phone call around 3:00 a.m., sending several patrol cars to Brown’s home early Tuesday.

    Lt. Chris Ramirez told reporters that, “Mr. Brown is going to be transported where he will be arrested for ADW (Assault with a Deadly Weapon).” Police stated “Brown will be formally booked sometime Tuesday night, or early Wednesday morning.”

    As of this afternoon, Lt. Ramirez stated that people were removed from the residence, and interviews would take place following a “protective sweep” of Brown’s home. Ramirez also told reporters that the investigation is still ongoing, and the search still being conducted and evidence collected. He would not comment on whether a gun or any other weapons were found on the premises due to the investigation still being on-going.

    Sources also reported to NBC that witnesses say Brown, who has recently pleaded guilty to a felony assault for another crime, refused to come out of his home when officers arrived. Some witnesses on the scene were uncooperative.

    Brown released a video on his official Instagram account. The profanity laced video has Brown saying that he is fed up with police showing up to his house. Brown stated “Every three months, y’all come up with something, bro. What is it? What’s going to be next?” he asked, adding, “At the same time, when I call police for stalker people … they don’t come until the next day.”

    Brown’s most famous dust up with the law is when he assaulted his then girlfriend singer Rihanna, after a night out on the town in 2009.

    According to the Associated Press, Brown was released late Tuesday after posting bail of $250,000.

    At the foot of 14,197 foot Mount Princeton, under the warm Rocky Mountain sun, amidst a cool river and lake, Vertex Festival was born. This festival was beautiful in every direction you looked – from the blue mountains in the distance, to the dancing cottonwood forest, to the colorful interactive art installations placed all over the venue. And of course, the music! Such a great variety of artists, old and new, with plenty of different genres and sounds to suit everyone’s ears.

  • Arise Festival Stands Tall Among Giants

    There is an ancient Eastern ritual cycle known as Jo-Ha-Kyu which has been applied to tea ceremonies, martial arts rituals, and even theater performances. The cycle was created to create intention and awareness to the different stages of life. From August 5-7 outside Loveland, Colorado, a family-run, independent music festival, called Arise, enacted the spirit of that intentional cycle through its three-day event. The festivities opened with a beautiful opening ceremony that included a series of “Jo”-like songs, chants, and prayers aimed at infusing festival-goers with an air of respect and care not often found at music festivals.

    The ritual “Ha” concept emphasizing the activity of becoming, often referred to “the swirl of days,” spun its way through the Arise weekend with a constant parade of live and electronic music acts including Jurassic 5, Colorado’s own, Elephant Revival, the Hard Working Americans, and Papadasio. The Area 51 stage hosted a bevy of bass-thumping EDM acts throughout the weekend. Still, mixed into the swirl were a number of self-reflective activities including yoga, philosophical discussion groups, and environmentalist workshops, including one led by the world-renowned activist, Julia Butterfly.

    Arise Fest

    Certainly there are other festivals attempting to infuse self-reflective elements of artistic expression with art structures, live painting, play spaces, and spiritual growth workshops into the music scene. However, it is a testament to Arise organizers that they continue to grow as a family-run event in a saturated festival market that is increasingly being dominated by large-corporately-funded events. Arise grew this year even as a new festival, backed by a music industry giant, sprung up in a nearby location the same weekend.

    The Arise weekend closed with rousing performances by the likes of Ziggy Marley, the New Mastersounds, and the Old World beats of Dirtwire, an EDM project founded by members of Beats Antique. A final ceremony closed the festival early Monday morning. “Kyu” rituals are designed to acknowledge the collections of communal experiences with the hope that participants have created a singular experience that is more than just another multi-day party. As the sun peaked over the rust-colored hills, and festival-goers slowly gathered in a circle to join hands, the sight was enough make one’s heart grow three sizes too large.

  • The Jauntee Announce Second Leg of Summer Tour, Phish After-Parties in Denver

    The Jauntee has announced the second leg of their Summer Tour, extending out to Colorado for a series of post-shows during the Phish run at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

    Hailing from Boston, The Jauntee have solidified a dedicated following through a focus on live improvisation, setlist variety, and musical exploration that makes every show different from the last. Among tour highlights include an all-improv set at Laniakea Fest in Ohio, Phish after-parties in Denver at Quixote’s True Blue on Friday and Saturday of Labor Day, a stop at Funk n Waffles in Syracuse on September 15, and a performance at Catskill Chill on September 23.

    Drawing influence from a wide variety of acts, The Jauntee’s improvisational landscape spans multiple genres, including funk, rock, jazz, progressive, bluegrass, psychedelic and ambient music. Their willingness to explore genres, abandon all song structure, and dive into ‘the weird’ sets them apart from your average upcoming jam band. They aim to push the boundaries of improvisation, embrace the moment and engage the audience. With a quickly growing loyal fanbase, an ever-expanding song catalog and an inclination for open ended improvisation, every show promises to be a unique experience.
