  • Let the Hoppy Hour Hero Flow with moe. at Saranac Brewery

    This weekend, moe. returns to Utica, NY for another glorious two-night stay at Saranac Brewery and prepare to bring Hoppy Hour Hero to the masses. The Utica staple will welcome Ryan Montbleau supporting on Friday, July 29 and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong opening on Saturday, July 30.

    hoppy hour heroAs fans already know, Saranac will be serving up some of their moe.st special brew, Hoppy Hour Hero, for the double event along with many other summer favorites.  Fans can also stay tuned for a special taping of “Vinnie’s Kitchen” featuring a recipe that includes the band’s namesake beer, which will be taped at the Brewery with some lucky contest winners.  Gates open at 5 p.m. both days.

    The Buffalo-based jammers have been taking a short break to prep for this weekend as well as select Summer appearances and their Fall tour which includes a Red Rocks performance paired with Gov’t Mule,  a Pink Floyd theme late-night set at The Peach Fest, and another 2-night run at the Town Ballroom in Buffalo.

  • Jane’s Addiction Partner with Dinosaur Jr at the Capitol Theatre

    Alt-rock founding fathers Janes’ Addiction’s Sterling Spoon Tour is celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversaries of both the band’s sophomore studio LP Ritual de lo Habitual and Lollapalooza, the eclectic festival co-owned and directed by Jane’s frontman Perry Farrell. The tour will stop at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on Sunday, July 17, with support from jangle-noise rockers Dinosaur Jr. The appearance will constitute the third consecutive night of NYC-metro area performances, following on the heels of tour stops at Coney Island and Asbury Park, NJ.

    Playing in or near New York City is always a sort of homecoming for Perry Farrell, who left his hometown of Queens after high school to pursue dreams of surfing the California coast. The band’s only live album aside from their 1987 self-titled debut was recorded in NYC in 2013.

    Jane’s and Dinosaur Jr both hail from the broad mid-80s world of independent, do-it-yourself music, but they represent opposite coasts and distinct stylistic leanings. Jane’s Addiction blazed a trail by combining heavy metal and post-punk sensibilities into an art-rock fusion music that retained its integrity even after being picked up by a major label. Dinosaur Jr made a name for themselves as the first notable indie band to infuse their songs with soaring guitar solos reminiscent of the seventies rock music that the punk movement had rebelled against. Thirty-plus years on from their formation, this pairing of bands offers audiences a chance to see two highly influential acts who are alike in having historically had difficulty staying together over the course of their respective careers but have recently been enjoying periods of stability and creative fruitfulness.

    The string of eight shows that Dino Jr is set to play with Jane’s Addiction comes just weeks in advance of the August 8 release of their eleventh studio album Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not. See Dinosaur Jr playing “Tiny” from the forthcoming album on The Late Show with Jools Holland:

    The Capitol Theatre, famous as a venue for classic rock acts and performers who follow closely in their footsteps, is an apt place for Jane’s Addiction and Dinosaur Jr to prove that they too are part of the unified history of rock and roll.

  • PhanArt Announces Lineup for San Francisco, Burlington Shows

    Trapped in time and don’t know what to do about scoring that next only-found-on-lot shirt to add to the collection? Relax, and seek out a PhanArt show coming to a tour near you this summer, including debuts in San Francisco, California and the Green Mountain State. If you’re heading west to see the Phish from Vermont’s two-day Bill Graham arena run, stop by the aptly dubbed San PhranArt Show on Tues., July 19 at Mezzanine in San Francisco. And later on this month, PhanArt will host A Country Crisp Sunlight on July 30 at Club Metronome in Burlington, VT, as part of Twiddle’s Tumble Down festival.

Think a one-stop shop for all things music: special edition tour shirts, posters, pins, stickers, photography, Henrietta’s Secret bikinis and more in one location. Hand-selected for this exhibition are artisans like Ryan Kerrigan, Super Rad Cape Co., TRiPPs Prints, Isadora Bullock, Ant Pharms Tour Pins and Designs, Fred Sutter, Level 42, Drivenpunk Glass and Terry O’Brien. The Mockingbird Foundation will also be on hand selling The Phish Companion 3. And stick around for the Pink Talking Phish after-party at Mezzanine from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. with Will Magid’s Alligator Spacewalk.

    PhanArt‘s A Country Crisp Sunlight at Club Metronome coincides with Twiddle’s Tumble Down, a weekend music experience at the Waterfront Park in Burlington. This showcase will feature some of the finest fan-based creations from White Light Foundation, the Phactory, the Shakedown Shop, Burns Designs Art by Joshua Letourneau, Pin Me Down, YEMshades, Dirty Birdz Goods, JEMagination, Sneaky Pig Productions, the Eden’s Rose Foundation and Greg Horowitz Photography. Holly Bowling will provide the soundtrack for the day — Grateful Dead and Phish piano interpretations — with a noon performance at the historic Nectar’s, which is located below the art-show venue.

    Since 2013, PhanArt exhibitions have been hosted in Atlantic City, Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami and Philadelphia, and the events, produced by Pete Mason of PhanArt and NYS Music, continue to promote unique artisan goods, while strengthening the music community and raising funds for charitable arts causes. And as always, PhanArt shows are free to the public, and both upcoming exhibits will be held from 12 to 5 p.m.

  • Disturbed and Breaking Benjamin to Play Lakeview Amphitheater

    Disturbed and Breaking Benjamin will kick off their co-headlining summer tour at the Lakeview Amphitheater in Syracuse, NY, on July 9. The tour will include stops in more than 20 cities across North America. Alter Bridge and Saint Asonia will join as special guests.

    Disturbed and Breaking BenjaminDisturbed, who recently kicked off their first tour following a four-year hiatus, is enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to their cover of the Simon and Garfunkel song “The Sound of Silence” off their 2015 album Immortalized. “The Sound of Silence” is the band’s second single to go platinum. “Down with the Sickness” was the band’s first from their four-time platinum debut album The Sickness.

    Co-headliner Breaking Benjamin also released a new album in 2015, Dark Before Dawn. The album reached number one on both the Billboard 200 and the alternative and rock charts. The album proves that the newly formed Breaking Benjamin lineup is still strong and can produce hit singles with “Failure” and “Angels Fall.”

    Fans in New York City were treated to a preview of the tour at a Breaking Benjamin acoustic performance in February where Disturbed frontman David Draiman jumped onstage to perform the Queen and David Bowie cover of “Under Pressure.” If this is any indication of what to expect on this tour, you won’t want to miss it.

  • NYS Music Presents Saturday Nights in July at Funk ‘N Waffles Downtown

    Beginning this Saturday, July 2, NYS Music will present a diverse lineup of artists at Funk ‘N Waffles in Downtown Syracuse. Cory Henry, the Blind Spots, Calliope Musical and the Zen Rites kick off the new summer series this weekend.

He dabbles in a variety of genres with artists such as Yolanda Adams, Sara Bareilles, P. Diddy, Kirk Franklin, Kenny Garrett, Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge, Shaun Kingston, Donald Lawrence and Michael McDonald. Yet, it’s his upbeat, jazzy tunes and captivating R&B performances that have caught the eyes of fans, while playing as a member of Snarky Puppy.     July Funk 'N WafflesThe Blind Spots are sure to get your hands in the air and your feet moving along to a pop-indie beat. This female-fronted, Ithaca-based band offers solid rhythm, an array of eclectic keyboard sounds and inventive electric guitar stylings.

    If there has ever been a folk band that made you feel like you were at a psychedelic party, Calliope Musical is the one. This group’s high-energy performance engages the crowd to create a beautiful interaction between the dance floor and the stage.

    The Zen Rites are an alternative folk duo from Ithaca who perform in hopes to spread positivity and consciousness. This couple began making music in 2015, with plans of releasing their first EP of lyrically driven songs full of passion and depth in the near future.

    7/9 Hippie Ball II w/Pearly Baker’s Best, Solar Garlic, Two Hour Delay @ 8 p.m.

    The authentic Grateful Dead tribute band, Pearly Baker’s Best, never plays the same show twice. Covering songs that span more than 50 years of timeless lyrics and jams, any fan would enjoy their performance.

    Solar Garlic — another tribute band, but this time it’s Phish, coming right out of Syracuse. Driven by the improvisational thrills that make Phish jams such an epic live performance, these four members pay proper tribute to their favorite band.

    Syracuse natives, Two Hour Delay, are an Americana rock jam band that has opened for Rusted Root, Donna the Buffalo, Floodwood, New Riders of the Purple Sage and Enter the Haggis. Influenced by rock and roll, blues, folk, country and bluegrass, they play a mix of tasteful original songs and covers.

    7/16 Funknut, Danille Ponder and The Tomorrow People @ 10 p.m.

    Funknut plays as a rotating cast of funk, soul and rock and roll. Funknut and its members have opened for and played with the Temptations, Bernie Worrell of Parliament Funkadelic and Talking Heads, Robert Randolph, John Medeski, the Four Tops, Soulive, KRS-One, Particle, Alan Evans and Break Science.

    Titled one of the “Top Ten Bands to Watch” by CityPaper, Danielle Ponder and the Tomorrow People transcends musical genres with a blast of deep, powerful groove and soul. Danielle’s style and charismatic vocals has landed them with powerhouses such as George Clinton, Ledisi and the Roots. The Rochester native states, “Soul music is something you feel,” she says. “It gives you goosebumps.” In combination with her groovy band, their performance is both enchanting and seductive — this honest stage presence is sure to make you melt.

     7/23 Rabbit in the Rye w/special guest Savannah and the Kings, Jackson Cavalier and The Fevertones @ 9 p.m.

    Joseph Mettler on guitar and harmonica, Alexander Lavon on bass and Brendan O’Connor on percussion and mandolin make up a progressive folk rock trio from Hamilton, NY. Rabbit in the Rye’s fables and unique way of storytelling combined with a bittersweet, poetic sound reminds listeners of a forgotten American image with fantastic realism.

    At a young age, Savannah began telling stories through lyrics exploding with imagery and passion that was well beyond her years. Her deep, expressive songs have caught the attention of artists such as Emmylou Harris, 10,000 Maniacs, Harpeth Rising, Field Report and award-winning Canadian country music singer-songwriter Ryan Cook and landed her opportunities to play with Buffalos Philharmonic Orchestra. After two brilliant solo tours, she extended her success as a harmony vocalist and rhythm guitarist with 10,000 Maniancs. In April, she recorded her latest album Bold and Unsteady with her new band, Savannah and the Kings, and is ready to share her passions with new and old fans alike.

    Jackson Cavalier and the Fevertones has been voted Rochester’s Best Busker(s) for the past two years and holds the title of house band at The Daily Refresher. Starting up as street performers, they experimented with horns, strings, percussion and harmony and have now played over one hundred gigs since their formation in 2013. Their consistency has paid off as they now have two studio albums and a high demand trailing after their Indie Folk sound.

    7/30 Castle Creek w/special guest SimpleLife @ 9 p.m.

    Local barnyard burners Kim Monroe and Chris Eves of Castle Creek are a powerful duo out of Syracuse. Using lyrically powerful ballads and a blues/jam influenced musicianship to captivate audiences throughout upstate New York all while maintaining their roots of familiar classic rock artists such as Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd.

    Starting as a trio of acoustic artists in 2001, this group has evolved from three part harmonies into a critically acclaimed band. You can catch them performing in different numbers, but they will always leave you wanting more. Two of the original members, Mike Frisina and Ben Lucas, have opened up 2 Bros. Studios where they write and record music consistently. Simple Life’s third album will be released this summer.

  • Brewery Ommegang to Host the String Cheese Incident and Twiddle

    Cooperstown, NY, is setting up to be a hot spot this summer for concert-goers as Brewery Ommegang and Dan Smalls Presents will host their short but sweet annual Summer Concert Series.  The concert season kicked off in May with Lake Street Dive and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. The next show coming up on July 8, is Colorado-based folk-jam band the String Cheese Incident and Vermont’s Twiddle.

    string cheese ommegangKnown for their diverse catalog of bluegrass-rock music with energized jams, the String Cheese Incident thrive on live performances and the fans that push them to rock harder every night. Kings of the festival scene, SCI have been touring for more than 20 years with countless studio and live recordings available as well as DVD’s of recent shows courtesy of Tour Gigs. In May 2015, while building their new studio in Colorado, the group chiseled a week out of their schedules to rent a house in Arizona and construct some new material, while bonding like a good band should. Appearing on their website is a free download of a few songs from that recording, titled  SCI Sound Lab Volume 1.

    Twiddle, the four-piece groove machine that many people are warming up to, recently just sold-out the stunning Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY, and are in full work mode with an intriguing list of tour dates this summer, including appearances at North Coast Music Festival, the Peach Fest and Lockn’ Music Festival.

    While on the road at this very moment, you can catch the String Cheese Incident at some of the major festivals and venues across the states which include Red Rocks, The Peach Fest and Big Sky Brewing Company before returning to New York to pump up the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.

  • Paramount Hudson Valley Kicks Off 86th Anniversary With Michael McDonald June 25

    The historic Paramount Hudson Valley theater in Peekskill celebrates its 86th year this Saturday June 25 with a special fundraising anniversary event featuring multi-Grammy award winning artist Michael McDonald. This year marks the third year of the theater’s stewardship by Red House Entertainment, who brought the venue back to life after it took a brief hiatus in 2012.

    The evening starts at 8 p.m. with the Hudson Valley’s own Marc Von Em of the Rob Thomas Band. As a regular at clubs throughout NYC and the northeast, Von Em’s dynamic performance on both vocals and acoustic guitar round out a complete sound for a one-man show. Following Von Em’s set Michael McDonald’s son Dylan McDonald takes the stage with his band Dylan McDonald and the Avians for a set.

    The evening’s headliner has made a name for himself apart from the bands he has worked with – Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers – along with many other musicians he has collaborated with after his time with those two bands. His work has won five Grammy Awards throughout his career. At the Paramount, McDonald will bring a collection of songs from his years with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers along with his solo hits.

    The 86th anniversary fundraising celebration at the Paramount will include giveaways and merchandise auctions. The theater asks for support “to assure [they] provide world-class entertainment to the Hudson Valley all year-round.”

  • Phish Embarks on Summer Tour 2016

    Phish embarks on their 2016 summer tour tomorrow when they take the stage at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota for their first show of the year on American soil since January 2. Phans across the country will rejoice as the Vermont quartet plays a series of shows at some of their most beloved venues, including the Gorge, the Mann, SPAC, Bill Graham and Dick’s; as well as making some notable debuts at Wrigley Field and the Lockn’ Music and Arts Festival.

    As if the type II jams and deep collective musical voyages aren’t enough, there’s tons of fun stuff to check out beyond when Phish is on stage. In Chicago, Galerie F will be showcasing Jim Pollock’s art – including never before seen sketches, posters and other original pieces. Similarly, Masthay Studios will open their doors in Hartford prior to the Phish show to show fans where the magic happens.

    There will be a series of strong after parties including Pink Talking Phish at the Mezzanine in San Francisco, Assembly of Dust at Martyr’s in Chicago, Jazz Is Phish at the House of Blues Chicago, and an abundance of musical happenings at Nanola Malta, just 10 minutes from SPAC, including pre-show festivities with Hayley Jane and the Primates, and a Sunday brunch with Holly Bowling and appearances from Mister F, The McLovins and more. Additionally there will be a James Brown Dance Party aftershow in Philly. PhanArt will be hosting a series of art shows in Chicago and San Francisco as well, bringing together a rapidly expanding fan base of art aficionados.

    One thing that’s for certain, is there are a lot of moving parts to Phish tour and it’s not all about the music the Vermont quartet makes on stage. It’s about a umbrella of a community where you’ll find so much love and excitement. It’s about exploring new places, trying new things, stepping outside of your comfort zone and reuniting with old friends that you may only see once a year while simultaneously making new connections. There are a lot of exciting things coming out of the band’s camp, including the free sampler Live Bait 12 where every single track clocks in at double digits and the recent release of the third edition of The Phish Companion benefiting the Mockingbird Foundation, available at the PhanArt show this Saturday in Chicago.

    As for the band, things couldn’t look more promising before hitting the road; especially since they’ve presumably finished recording a new album with Bob Ezrin in Nashville. Armed with a fresh stable of new material, it’s safe to say we can expect some debuts and several new launching pads for deep improvisation.

    2016 has been a rough year so far with the losses of musical icons such as David Bowie, Merle Haggard and Prince so it will be interesting to see if Phish takes a swing at any of their musical catalogs. In recent years Phish has come more into their element than ever before in the 3.0 era. Now that all of the members are in their early 50s, they seem to have a grasp on the intrinsic connection they all share after being friends for all of these years. They seem more comfortable, happy, appreciative and healthy than ever before and it is certainly reflected in their music. Chris Kuroda is also rumored to be working with a new light rig that’s unlike anything he’s ever used in the past. There is a multi-panel design that will be suspended above the band and there appears to be three large LED panels encapsulating the members on stage. It looks like the perfect stepping stone to some extensive and deep psychedelic visual experiences.

    One thing to be expected is the unexpected. Phish hates being predictable and if everything goes off without a hitch this could be one of the best tours in the post-Hampton era. The build up certainly makes it seem that this tour will be a success right out of the gates. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty, lets get this show on the road.

  • Joywave Returns To Rochester With Some Familiar Faces Saturday Night

    Joywave, Rochester own indie-rock darlings, will make a stop in their hometown of Rochester at Anthology on Saturday night. The band is continuing on their rise to stardom with a lengthy headlining tour before a mostly quiet summer ahead, save for a smattering of festival dates. Their infectious and creative dance-happy music has graced the stages of Coachella, Lollapaloozas both domestic and abroad, X Games, Summerstage in Central Park, Jimmy Kimmel and the list goes on.

    Joywave will be bringing three bands with strong Rochester ties with them. KOPPS, an electro-dance group from the Flour City, has been working together with Joywave since their inception, sharing members and guesting on each other’s albums, shows and even in their merchandising. Maybird, psychedelic rockers fronted by Josh Netsky, are currently working out of Brooklyn, but originally, and until recently, hail from Rochester. And lastly, Transviolet, a fresh pop band making waves out in Los Angeles (and beyond), features three members from Rochester.

    It’s an incredible four-part Rochester-centric bill, featuring bands that are all on their way up. While it isn’t quite sold out, it certainly will, so it’s best to get tickets in advance. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Saturday night with the music getting going around 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance ($25 day of show) and are available at the Anthology website or in person at House of Guitars, Aaron’s Alley and Record Archive.

  • Nanola Announces Schedule for Phish SPAC Pre and Post-Parties

    Looking for your pre- and post-show plans during Phish’s run at Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) July 1 through 3? NYS Music and Nanola have you fully covered.

    The Capital Region’s own Mister F will host three nights of pre-shows and after-parties at Nanola in Malta to keep the fun going long after the lots have cleared after Phish each night. You can even take a shuttle to and from SPAC, just a short 10-minute ride from Nanola to SPAC.

    Friday’s after-party starts with Mister F at 12 a.m. and Lespecial at 2:15 a.m. Saturday’s pre-party features Hayley Jane and the Primates at 4 p.m., and Mister F is on again at 12 a.m. following the show, with Strange Machines hitting the stage at 2:15 a.m. Sunday’s pre-party has Mister F on at 4 p.m. and The McLovins closing out the weekend with an after-party beginning at 12 a.m.

    In addition to these pre- and post-shows, Nanola will be offering a $13 brunch buffet on Sunday, July 3, for Holly Bowling‘s performance. Reservations are recommended for table service and can be made by calling 518-587-1300.

    All pre-parties are free, with each nightly show costing $10. Shuttles are also $10, and a combo pass including all shuttles and after-shows is $50. You can pick up tickets here.
