  • Dopapod Reunites with Former Drummer

    Berklee-born, Brooklyn-based improv specialists Dopapod are going with the Fro. The band announced a reunion with drummer Neal “Fro” Evans Wednesday. Evans stepped away from the band in 2013 for personal reasons and was replaced by Scotty Zwang.

    Speaking to Evans’ homecoming, a statement released by the band said, “As we count our blessings for every moment we’ve experienced while surrounded by a wonderfully supportive family of fans, we’ve also found ourselves recounting the original chemistry that undeniably forged the path that we’re grateful to be walking.”

    Zwang appears to be exiting the band under cordial circumstances and is working on other projects.

    Evans’ first shows back behind the kit will be at the Resonance Festival in Thornville, OH and Catskill Chill festival in Lakewood, PA at the end of September.

    Dopapod recently announced an extensive fall tour with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong.The tour kicks off in Jacksonville, FL on Oct. 5 and includes several New York stops throughout the trek. The Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs, Syracuse’s Westcott Theater and Buffalo Iron Works will all get an upstate taste of the “DopaPong” fall tour, while Irving Plaza is paid a visit later in the tour.

  • Mike Gordon Announces Fall 2016 Tour Dates

    Mike Gordon dropped 15 dates today for his 2016 fall tour. He’s playing with frequent collaborators Scott Murawski and Craig Myers along with organist Robert Walter and drummer John Kimock for the tour that hits locations in the east and midwest throughout November and early December.

    mike gordon fall 2016The tour kicks off on Nov. 18 at the Delmar Hall in St. Louis, MO, and completes with a three-night run at The Sinclair, in Cambridge, MA. 

    New York dates on the tour include stops at the Town Ballroom in Buffalo on Nov. 23 and the Egg in Albany on Nov. 26.

    A limited number of pre-sale tickets are available now through Thursday Sept. 8 at 5:00 p.m. After that, tickets will then go on sale to the general public beginning Friday Sept. 9. For more ticket information, visit Mike Gordon’s website.

  • Chris Brown Taken Into Custody After Home Gun Incident, Posts Bail

    Chris Brown just can’t help himself, as he finds himself in trouble again. NBC News reports that the Hip Hop and R&B singer was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department after law enforcement showed up to Browns house with a warrant. An unidentified woman claimed that Brown had threatened her with a gun.

    The early morning incident happened when the unidentified woman claimed that Brown had pointed a gun at her before she left his gated estate in Tarzana. Police received a phone call around 3:00 a.m., sending several patrol cars to Brown’s home early Tuesday.

    Lt. Chris Ramirez told reporters that, “Mr. Brown is going to be transported where he will be arrested for ADW (Assault with a Deadly Weapon).” Police stated “Brown will be formally booked sometime Tuesday night, or early Wednesday morning.”

    As of this afternoon, Lt. Ramirez stated that people were removed from the residence, and interviews would take place following a “protective sweep” of Brown’s home. Ramirez also told reporters that the investigation is still ongoing, and the search still being conducted and evidence collected. He would not comment on whether a gun or any other weapons were found on the premises due to the investigation still being on-going.

    Sources also reported to NBC that witnesses say Brown, who has recently pleaded guilty to a felony assault for another crime, refused to come out of his home when officers arrived. Some witnesses on the scene were uncooperative.

    Brown released a video on his official Instagram account. The profanity laced video has Brown saying that he is fed up with police showing up to his house. Brown stated “Every three months, y’all come up with something, bro. What is it? What’s going to be next?” he asked, adding, “At the same time, when I call police for stalker people … they don’t come until the next day.”

    Brown’s most famous dust up with the law is when he assaulted his then girlfriend singer Rihanna, after a night out on the town in 2009.

    According to the Associated Press, Brown was released late Tuesday after posting bail of $250,000.

  • Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin with the Guilty Ones to appear at Earlville Opera House

    Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin are well known as founders of the prominent Los Angeles band the Blasters, which existed where blues, punk, country, and rockabilly found a way to intertwine and helped spark the resurgence of what has come to be known as roots rock or Americana music. In the late 1980’s, the brothers went their separate ways with solo acts and side projects, until rejoining forces for 2014’s Grammy nominated Common Ground, a tribute to Big Bill Broonzy. Dave Alvin’s driving guitar work, along with Phil Alvin’s powerful howling vocals, and backed by the Guilty Ones, make for an irresistible sound on last year’s release, Lost Time, also available from Yep Roc Records. That recording saw Dave and Phil continue to pay homage to their influences, and includes four songs written by Big Joe Turner, who they had met when still teenagers. Turner had been a friend and mentor to the Alvins until his passing in 1985.

    As for the enduring appeal of the music they play and cover, Dave Alvin has said, “In some ways, this type of music doesn’t die. It goes through bleak periods or droughts, but I think there’s always going to be a type of kids like us, who are looking for something else. We may not be in the majority, but there will always be a sizable minority of oddballs that find purpose in old music, find meaning in the older music, and then take it wherever they’re going to take it from there.”

    On Friday, September 2, the Earlville Opera House will present Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin with The Guilty Ones, along with special guest opening performer Sarah Borges, beginning at 8:00 p.m.

    The Earlville Opera House is an intimate, historic building originally constructed in 1892. A limited number of tickets remain available for the show, and may be purchased through the Earlville Opera House.

  • Claypool Lennon Go To Bat for Local Artists at Canalside Buffalo

    The decision to pull two popular local bands scheduled to open for the free Claypool Lennon Delirium show tonight at Canalside has caused a lot of uproar and negative attention for the popular duo. The news first surfaced on Facebook yesterday, when Kickstart Rumble & Randle and the Late Night Scandals addressed their fans to apologize for the cancellation of their performances. After the surge of responses online, the local acts have now been added back to the bill for the evening.

    According to All WNY News, both bands attributed Claypool and Lennon’s “refusal to share the stage with local acts” as the reason for this last minute change.

    Kickstart Rumble first informed their fans via Facebook with a message shortly before 8 p.m. that said “BAD NEWS: Even though we won the Canalside/Public Battle of the Bands, due to a contract/booking/talent issue, the headlining act refuses to share the stage with a local act, so Kickstart Rumble will NOT be the opening act at tomorrows final Canalside Thursday concert. We thank everyone who voted for us. We really had a special show planned for you for the big stage…. #winnersturnedlosers”

    Randle and the Late Night Scandals confirmed the rumor shortly thereafter with their own Facebook announcement: “Sorry Fandals. With less then 24hrs notice we have just been informed that our scheduled opening for Claypool Lennon at Canalside this Thursday has been canceled due to the headlining act “refusing” to share the same stage with local opening acts. We were offered a small stage to the side of the venue, with no rain cover but we declined and stand in solidarity with Kick Start Rumble. The Scandals had planned a special show for our fans, and feel this substitution would only compromise the quality of performance we wanted to share with the public. Thank you to all of those that took part in The Public Choice online voting and those who supported us.”

    However, the announcement of their return to the schedule is indicating that Les Claypool and Sean Lennon heard of the incident, and personally contacted their management to request the local bands to get their spots back.

    Canalside Buffalo UPDATE on tonight’s Free Thursday Canalside Concert!: After all the social media comments, Les Claypool and Sean Lennon themselves went to their management teams and made the decision to let the local bands play tonight! The new set times for tonights last concert will be:

    Randle and the Late Night Scandals: 6:00 p.m.
    Kickstart Rumble: 6:45 p.m.
    JJUUJJUU: 7:35 p.m.
    The Claypool Lennon Delirium: 8:30 p.m.

    Both local bands have posted an update to reflect their gratitude for being back on the schedule, and to Claypool and Lennon for standing up for local talent.

  • Corey Taylor Speaks About Fan Cell Phone Incident; Would Do It Again

    Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor, was interviewed recently by Las Vegas Review-Journal freelance writer Melina Robinson. Robinson asked Taylor various questions from what the weirdest thing about Las Vegas is to what its like to be Corey Taylor. She also asked Corey Taylor about when he recently slapped a cell phone out of a fans hand who was on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or playing Pokémon Go, instead of paying attention to the show.

    A video went viral of the incident on social media and YouTube, which made fans who attended future shows standing up close on the rail or inside the pit, think twice about pulling their phone out at a Slipknot show. Taylor does clear up some of those phone issues in the interview.

    Robinson mentioned the recent controversy involving Taylor smacking the phone out of a fans hand at a show. Robinson then asked, “What is your personal take of the connectivity/disconnectivity of cell phone usage?”

    Taylor replied:

    You watch people walk down the street, and they can’t get their beaks out of their stupid phones to cross the street. I love watching people get buried in their tiny little technological worlds, and then reality comes and smacks them in the face.

    I don’t mind people who take pictures. I don’t even mind people who shoot video. I love that because you’re still engaged in the show. A lot of people get the wrong idea, they think that if I just see someone on their phone, I’m trying to rage quit their fun. I’m not trying to do that at all.

    But if I see someone, and it’s so obvious they’re not even there, you’ve got to poke them with a stick to get their attention sometimes. Sometimes that means smacking the phone out of their hands. You can hate me all you want. It’s not going to stop me from smacking those things out of people’s hands.

  • The Budos Band Rented A Vintage Organ. Then They Destroyed it On Stage

    A video has surfaced showing destruction done to a rented 1967 Vox Continental organ by The Budos Band, a group based out of Staten Island.  The cell phone video shows the keyboardist, Mike Deller, on the floor attempting to play the organ that had fallen off the stand, with no one even attempting to pick up or check on the condition of the instrument.  How the organ got knocked off is unclear.  What is clear, however, is that this instrument was being rented out as backline equipment, and Deller is seen literally ripping the keys right off the organ.

    The band responded to the damage on their Facebook page with the following:

    “Over the weekend during our set, we managed to damage a rather expensive rented vintage organ. We regret that our actions resulted in equipment damage and will ensure this will not happen again. We already offered to pay for the damage that was done days ago, and we hope that this incident can be handled in a professional manner. The damage was not done on purpose, and it was an unfortunate side effect of our stage show. If you have seen us play live shows, you know we give 110 percent every time we play. The paying fans expect that much from us and we also expect that much from each other. Playing at our level of intensity sometimes produces unwanted results and we regret any damages we may have caused. 

    We love our fans and the people behind the scenes that make it all happen. We appreciate all of your support and look forward to seeing you out on the road.

    vulpeck gameFunk band Vulfpeck announced their newest album ‘The Beautiful Game’ today in unique fashion. Sending out only the artwork and a link to a Kickstarter, with a goal of $1, the band offers up a download of the upcoming album for only $10, available in October 2016.

    As of this writing, the Kickstarter has raised over $17,000, after only a few short hours since being announced.

  • Kristen May Departs Flyleaf, Feels She Never Fit In

    Flyleaf is now in search of a new vocalist after Kristen May posted a video recently on social media updating her status and announcing that she is departing the band. In the video, May stated that fans have been asking her what’s going on with Flyleaf; if they were writing new music and if the band had any touring plans.

    flyleafMay then did a quick recap of her career up to where she is at now, which is being a mother to her baby boy. She then stated that after three years she was leaving Flyleaf:

    Now is the time that unfortunately have to say goodbye to Flyleaf. It’s sad to say that, because so many of you fans have really accepted me with open arms and loved me. And to not have played for some of you, and you know, I know we have a lot fans in South America and all over the world, um even with all the touring we did, I know I didn’t get to meet you all. So if you were a fan of what I have done with Flyleaf I just want to say thank you so much, and much love to you.

    May plans to continue her music career, just not with Flyleaf. She then touched on another reason why she is leaving the band besides wanting to be the best mom she can be for her child. She says:

    I’ve toured in bands, and been on the road and away from home for 12 years. And so for me to be able to plant some roots for a little bit with my son, and my husband, and our dogs here at my home is really, really important to me.

    As far as will I make music later, absolutely. I know that I will make music again. I already am picking up the guitar again and getting time when I can to make music but, I don’t think it will be with Flyleaf. Though I love the album Between The Stars, and I feel like the guys and I really poured our hearts and soul in it. I never truly felt like I was part of the team in the way that I never truly felt like the band was mine. And I’m sure a lot of people feel that way when they come in to a band that had a previous lead singer, um the story isn’t all mine. And so I never truly felt like I fit in. Life is too short to stay where you aren’t fully growing. Anyway, to be completely honest with you, I need to grow and move elsewhere. Committing myself to one band, just isn’t what is right for me.

    May took over for Lacy Sturm, who stepped down from Flyleaf in October of 2012, after the death of one of the band’s lead audio engineers, and to raise her son Jack. Sturm has recently returned to music with a solo album titled Life Screams. Could a possible reunion between Sturm and Flyleaf be in the works?

  • Brooklyn Comes Alive to Feature 50 Artists this October

    On Saturday, October 22, Brooklyn Comes Alive, an indoor festival that debuted in 2015, will return with performances from 50 artists showcased across three venues – Brooklyn Bowl, Music Hall of Williamsburg and The Hall at MP, each a 10 minute walk from the others. Solo sets, unique acts and familiar and new supergroups will perform throughout the day from 12pm-12am.

    Update 8/18: The first supergroup for the event, Breaking Biscuits, featuring both members of Break Science and Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner of the Disco Biscuits, has been announced.

    Be sure to grab advanced tickets now to secure your spot at one of the most momentous musical occassions of the year! For those seeking to be fully immersed in the Brooklyn Comes Alive experience, consider purchasing VIP tickets, which grant access to the Brooklyn Bowl “Artist Lounge” as well as access to private VIP viewing areas at Music Hall of Williamsburg and The Hall at MP.

    Members of The Disco Biscuits, String Cheese Incident, Ratdog, Lettuce, Trey Anastasio Band, The Nth Power, Dopapod, Gov’t Mule and many more will take part in the day long marathon of music.     Note: both The Hall at MP and Music Hall of Williamsburg are 18+ venues, while the Brooklyn Bowl is strictly 21+. If you are between the ages of 18 and 21, you are welcome to purchase a ticket, however you will not be allowed access to the Brooklyn Bowl.
