The 8th Annual version of UMAF, was held at various venues throughout Utica the weekend of September 11-13. The biggest problem involved with attending this festival is being able to fit in all the great music available throughout the weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going in without a plan\u00a0is probably the best way to attack\u00a0this weekend. Doing it this way, one can experience such pleasant surprises as the young brother and sister combo of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001a34NxxO2WPwJlvmBaUZMZ_-oTMfJipkpaHL-L3MQczk622EPnbVZsvdHq_6JdPFI8z0FtSIioSF7sEhicb8mPUVXE_lkobEuXpX5QFW-cRw_07WGbbbALK7nCFMqN01XTAlH7S4q0i9MXBY19R77RCO8NnwL4Cp7MmRu1Mpl6IQ=&amp;c=MKWMHToPnRGpNI7VIZENMTEZKvDktc6Bd_BQxHRysnEFWPI8kqZbxg==&amp;ch=Dx_wq2wDu2DA8cfBYQCZH2zWWPrUbLulFnUMZsX5ydbshmbdQ7smBg==\"><b>Jocelyn and Chris Arndt<\/b><\/a><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who played a Saturday mid-afternoon set at Nail Creek Pub, in the process winning over those in \u00a0attendance.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90825\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-90825\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/UMAF-NYS-0030-400x500.jpg\" alt=\"Jocelyn Arndt\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jocelyn Arndt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Joceyln is slight in stature, yet huge in vocal talent. She has a soulful, bluesy voice backed up with power; think Bonnie Raitt channeled through Grace Potter with a visit from PJ Harvey. <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/5CuQMvxSZn0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jocelyn\u2019s animated vocal delivery<\/a> commands attention. Her brother Chris, who is also her co-writer, delivers a solid and crisp sounding blues-rock style guitar that is the perfect accompaniment to Jocelyn\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The band\u2019s tour itinerary is scant during the school year, as both are students at Harvard, but they will be hitting stages across New York in the coming weeks. \u00a0Check <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jocelynarndt.com\/shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for dates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending the weekend bouncing between Lukin\u2019s and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nailcreekpub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nail Creek Pub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seemed to be what many people were doing but to do so is to miss out on many of the other acts. Tiny\u2019s hosted several jazz influenced bands, including <\/span><b>Notified<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Carmen Caramanica Jazz Trio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while D.A. Bentley\u2019s entertained the EDM crowd with sets from <\/span><b>DJ D.A.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Vongel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Phungeye<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among others. Harlee\u2019s Pub &amp; Grille was geared towards the metal. Local favorites <\/span><b>Nineball <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Street Rock Mafia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided Friday crowds with high energy entertainment at Harlee\u2019s. Nineball is also festival producer, Joe Sweet\u2019s main project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lukinsonvarick.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lukin\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hosted <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coneheadbuddha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Conehead Buddha<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Friday night. The Albany-area band has been on the jamband circuit for twenty years and showed no signs of wear this weekend. While the band has taken a hiatus here or there within that time, on this night it provided a sharp mix of reggae, ska and jam that has endeared Conehead Buddha to the northeast scene all these years. Also saxophonist Shannon Lynch provided much of the theatrics throughout the set, anchoring the big horn sound Conehead Buddha is known for.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90778\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90778\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-90778\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/UMAF-NYS-0010-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"Conehead Buddha\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Conehead Buddha<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female artists took ownership of this year\u2019s Utica Music and Arts Festival. In addition to Lynch and Arndt\u2019s performances; on Saturday, the festival faithful were treated to the eclectic mix of jangle pop of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sirsy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Sirsy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Lead singer and stand-up drummer, Melanie Khramer and her partner, guitarist <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rich Libutti, had the Nail Creek crowd, the biggest one of the weekend to this point, dancing and singing along. Khramer has the uncanny ability to engage the crowd with humor and powerful vocals with lyrics that may take you to a darker place. The fact that the music is typically so upbeat and Khramer so quick-witted with her banter, may disguise some of the darkness in the lyrics but it also gives the listener pause. \u00a0Krahmer&#8217;s Ella-like voice and stage presence added a terrific touch to the band&#8217;s final song of the night, a cover of Black Sabbath&#8217;s &#8220;War Pigs.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92028\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92028\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-92028 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Sirsy-UMAF-9-12-15-500x281.jpg\" alt=\"Melanie of SIRSY belting it out. \" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92028\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melanie Khramer of SIRSY belting it out.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sirsy will be in Utica again on Dec. 8, performing an all-ages show at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TRAMONTANE-CAFE-129018670661\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Tramontane<\/a> (known familiarly as The Tram). The show begins at 8:00 p.m. and will be a celebration of the band\u2019s new EP to be released the week prior.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploding onto the Nail Creek stage after Sirsy\u2019s set was Brooklyn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shinobininja.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Shinobi Ninja<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With an elaborate and energetic stage show led by lead singer, Baby G, clad in an Iron Maiden t-shirt. It was clear from the start that this wouldn\u2019t be your typical rock show. The band\u2019s uniqueness has been described as being \u201clike the Beastie Boys, Slayer and Lauryn Hill all mixed together.\u201d After witnessing the band\u2019s performance, that is an appropriate description. The following video gives a good impression of a Shinobi Ninja experience. Mix in some metal, reggae, rap, a little punk and a whole lot of jumping and you get this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shinobi Ninja - Save Us (Official)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/deG-mZz1c9g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The uninitiated looked on in puzzling disbelief once the Ninjas took the stage, however in the short time they performed for the UMAF crowd, most of the leery were won over. The true venue to witness Shinobi Ninja is a live one. If this band doesn\u2019t make some noise on the national scene in short order it will be a surprise.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UMAF faves <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hankandcupcakes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Hank and Cupcakes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed Shinobi Ninja to a welcoming reception. Also based in Brooklyn, this duo is all about the performance. The husband and wife duo originally began performing together while serving in the Israeli Army at the age of 19. Colorfully dressed and highly animated, lead singer Sagit &#8220;Cupcakes&#8221; Shir isn\u2019t afraid to get into the face of the audience while performing. In addition to pulling off vocal duties, Shir also drums and plays piano while bassist Ariel &#8220;Hank&#8221; Scherbacovsky keeps the beat and uses samples while safely tucked away stage right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hank and Cupcakes deliver a performance that begs to be seen and the elbow to elbow crowd in front of the Nail Creek\u2019s outdoor staage proved that on a rainy Saturday night in Utica.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90842\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90842\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-90842\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/UMAF-NYS-0058-500x400.jpg\" alt=\"Hank and Cupcakes rockin' the Nail Creek\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90842\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hank and Cupcakes rockin&#8217; the Nail Creek<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other Saturday night headliners performed nearly simultaneously up the street at Lukin\u2019s. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.floodwoodmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Floodwood<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a bluegrass based band comprised of moe. bandmates Al Schnier and Vinnie Amico, as well as Jason Barady, Nick Piccininni and Zachary Fleitz, put together a two set show that, unbeknownst to all in attendance, would turn out to be one of the band\u2019s final performances with this <a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/site\/2015\/10\/21\/floodwood-announces-lineup-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lineup<\/a>. Schnier and Fleitz announced their departure from Floodwood in a release just a few weeks ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90804\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90804\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-90804\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/UMAF-NYS-0064-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"Floodwood\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Floodwood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The band packed the house at Lukin\u2019s, playing right up to the 2:00 a.m. hour, performing Floodwood originals mixed with some moe. covers, Dead covers and other bluegrass. \u00a0A Floodwood show is always a good time. Varick Street Legend, Rainbow Young even made an appearance opening the set with a rousing version of the &#8220;Star Spangled Banner&#8221; that included maximum audience participation. Rainbow&#8217;s presence was seen at Lukin&#8217;s throughout the weekend, cementing the festival as a true Utica tradition.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90801\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90801\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-90801 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/UMAF-NYS-0060-500x400.jpg\" alt=\"UMAF NYS-0060\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90801\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rainbow Young, Varick Street Legend, performing the National Anthem prior to Floodwood&#8217;s set.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in a music glut and looking for something new to listen to, the Utica Music and Arts Festival is the perfect venue to get you out of that funk. Festival organizer Joe Sweet and his booking crew go out of their way to include a huge variety of music to the festival each year. The 2015 edition was no different.
