  • Christmas Releases from Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem and more!

    The holidays are full of surprises, and between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, a bevy of new music was released from some big names.

    First up is a new track from LCD Soundsystem with “Christmas Will Break Your Heart,” a song front man James Murphy depressingly sings to himself each year around this time has been recorded and adds fuel to the fire that LCD Soundsystem may reunite in 2016, possibly at the new Panorama Festival in Queens.

    Future Islands released a cover of the WHAM! classic “Last Christmas,” a fitting tune for the synthpop group.

    Radiohead surprised fans with a rejected theme to the James Bond film “Spectre,” and while it was ultimately not used (Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” took the honors), fans were treated with a Christmas gift in the release of the song.

    Keeping things upbeat this holiday season, Miley Cyrus and The Flaming Lips shared “My Sad Christmas Song.” With her collaborators on Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, Miley has some depressingly great lyrics:

    This is my sad Christmas song
    So I rip another bong
    I never been good at making plans
    Next year, I’m gonna be with my man
    My little sister says I’m the Grinch
    But my mom thinks I’m just a bitch

    Speculation leans to the song being related to her ex-fiancee, Liam Hemsworth.

  • Party Tube Presents “A Very Burghy Christmas”

    Party Tube from Plattsburgh has a new holiday tune for this season, a fun and cynical look at the doom and gloom that Christmas brings to some in the North Country of NY. “A Very Burghy Christmas” was written by Kevin Lewis (guitar, vocals) alongside Sean Godreau (bass, percussion) and Justin Schultz  (guitar, percussion, vocals).

    Party Tube formed in 2014 on the shore of Lake Champlain and have quickly become a North Country mainstay. The group plans on hitting the studio to work on their debut album in early 2016. Download the track here.

  • Felice Navidad! Felice Brothers to Release Benefit Christmas EP

    ‘Tis the season to be jolly, and the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley will be decking their halls with tidings of comfort for families throughout the region through the help of Palenville’s Felice Brothers. The band is set to release a five-song EP, Felice Navidad, of original Christmas-themed songs through their online store on Nov. 30.

    The cost of the EP download is $5, with net proceeds benefiting the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. Those pre-ordering now will receive a free download of the new song, “Country Ham.”

    felice navidad The band will also be performing at Foodstock 8, an annual charity concert benefiting the same food bank at The Chance in Poughkeepsie on Nov. 21. Other bands on the bill that night include Lindsey Webster, Sirsy and Lara Hope and the Arktones. Other dates include a Nov. 28 gig at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, Webster Hall in New York on Dec. 2 and Brighton Music Hall in Boston on New Year’s Eve.

    The follow-up to the band’s acclaimed 2014 album Favorite Waitress is slated for release in 2016. The Albany Times Union called Waitress, “freewheeling, loose and heartfelt…A wild cross between The Band and Nirvana.”

    The Felice Brothers have released their first video from the benefit Christmas EP, set to be released Nov. 30. Ian Felice performs the simple, forlorn tale of Christmas. Felice tells the Wall Street Journal, “It’s a narrative about feeling lonely on Christmas, and the different emotions that can go with the holidays that aren’t always talked about in the happy-go-lucky songs.” Check out the new video here:

  • Mike Campese Christmas Show in Albany

    Hey Albany area rock fans, are you in the holiday spirit? If so, guitar virtuoso Mike Campese will bring his heavy shredding style of hero holiday guitar playing to The Madison Theater in Albany on Saturday, December 5.

    Campese and his band will play rock-themed holiday favorites such as “Deck the Halls,” “Grinch,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Auld Lang Syne” and “Silent Night,” to name a few.

    Show time starts at 8:30 and tickets cost $10.

    Campese has released eight studio albums in his solo career, but the holiday-inspired show will see Campese perform songs from his sixth studio album The Meaning of Christmas, along with some other releases. The well-received album was released in 2008.

    Campese is a guitar virtuoso and composer. He is best known for his time as a member of the symphonic speed metal group Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Campese was chosen over several guitarists in 2004. In his first album with the band, Campese received a gold record for his work on TSO’s fourth album, The Lost Christmas Eve.

    Campese is no stranger to the Albany area, born right in the New York capital and graduated from Shaker High School in Latham. Campese is an honors graduate from the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. Growing up around musicians, Campese started playing guitar at the age of 13. His father was a virtuoso violinist and his brother also played guitar.

    Fans can also catch Campese in a solo performance at this year’s First Night 2016 in Saratoga Springs at Empire State College’s meeting room #1 – 103 starting at 7 p.m. At midnight, Campese will play to the First Night fireworks inside Congress Park to “rock” in the New Year.
