David Gilmour will tour North America in 2016, the first time in a decade.
The Pink Floyd lead guitarist revealed details during an appearance over the weekend alongside wife and lyricist Polly Samson at the Borris House Festival of Writing and Ideas in Ireland.
During the question-and-answer session with Scottish writer Andrew O’Hagan, entitled “Lost for words,” Gilmour revealed the name of his new solo album due out in September: Rattle That Lock.
During an autograph session after the discussion, Gilmour told a fan that he has plans to tour North America in 2016, according to the Pink Floyd-themed podcast Brain Damage hosted by Matt Leonard, aka “the Doctor.”
Leonard also includes in the podcast a quick preview of two new songs that will be on the album, “Boots on the Ground” and the bluesy “Girl with a Yellow Dress” (around 1:30). The material was played from Gilmour’s iPhone, Leonard said in the podcast.
Also during the session, Gilmour and Samson “touched on lyric writing and the nature of creativity, amongst other topics” and “the process of writing lyrics for both On An Island and The Division Bell, Polly expanded on the collaborative nature of her writing for David and Pink Floyd, and how rewarding it has proved to be,” according to Gilmour’s Facebook page.

When one of your favorite bands for nearly 20 years comes around to play a few shows at a venue only two hours away, you make that drive. In the case of Strangefolk, there were three nights of shows at Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre, all worth the commute to Port Chester and full of surprises, guests, covers and classics.
With Jason Crosby (Susan Tedeschi Band, Phil and Friends) sitting in for the entire weekend on keys and fiddle, a venue that grew in attendance each night was treated to classic Strangefolk songs. Thursday’s first set featured “Roads,” “All the Same,” “Speculator” and a creative “Burned Down->Fire On the Mountain->Burned Down,” teasing a theme for the weekend’s sets. The second set led with five Grateful Dead songs: “Althea,” “Deal,” “Dark Hollow,” “Candyman” and “Tennessee Jed” before the band returned to originals including “Cabin John,” “Fountain” and “Westerly.” A surprise cover of John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery” sung poetically by Reid Genauer, preceded “Westerley” while an encore of “Valhalla” finished the night.
On Friday, fans were treated to more Grateful Dead and originals that featured significant exploration inside of jams. An extensive “Alaska” was found in the first set alongside rarer originals “Diary” and “Faces”. There was significant interplay between Jon Trafton and Crosby during “Rather Go Fishin’,” leading to a “Shake Your Body” jam that lit the crowd up.
Set 2 brought out more Dead songs, starting with “Shakedown Street,” “Brown Eyed Woman,” a crowd singalong of “Loser” and “Scarlet Begonias.” Originals ruled the rest of the evening with a lengthy fan favorite “Lines and Circles,” “Rachel” with Crosby on fiddle, “Songbeard,” “45 Degrees” and “So Well” closing out the set. A soulful encore of “Things That Fly” ended the night, a sweaty one for many as club had gotten steamy during the hot second set.
Strangefolk’s three night run at Garcia’s came to a close on Saturday with the trio Sam and Margo opening as fans slowly filled the room. Strangefolk greeted a sold out crowd with “Sweet Libation” before carving deep into their repertoire with “Like You Anyway” and “Poland.” Genauer then brought out Aaron Maxwell, Jon Bevo, and Dan Pifer from God Street Wine, noting that the stage was a “little bit like a clown car” as the musicians joined. God Street Wine had tweeted earlier in the day that the trio would be joining Strangefolk at Garcia’s that night, letting the anticipation build for those attending the show. Having previously teamed with Genauer and fellow Assembly of Dust band members Adam Terrelll and Dave Diamond in 2014 under the Assembly of Wine moniker, Saturday was a chance for the God Street Wine members to play with the rest of Strangefolk.
“Speculator” led off the collaboration between the two bands with Maxwell singing lead vocals and fellow God Street Wine alumnus Jason Crosby trading his keys for a fiddle. “Driving West,” a God Street Wine original, followed before “Sometimes” closed out the band team-up with Maxwell and Genauer trading vocals and Maxwell and Trafton exchanging guitar riffs. As the God Street Wine trio walked off the stage, Genauer hinted at what was to come by informing the crowd “they’ll be back later.” “Whatever” and “Reuben’s Place” closed out the strong opening set with the members of Strangefolk and Crosby posing for a “selfie” with the crowd in the background before heading off stage for the setbreak.
The second set featured the return of Maxwell, Bevo, and Pifer and a journey into the Grateful Dead’s catalog. A gorgeous 17 minute rendition of “Sugaree,” featuring Maxwell on vocals and Crosby returning to the fiddle began the set and “Eyes of the World,” “Jack Straw,” and “Franklin’s Tower” followed with the fans in attendance joyously soaking in every note. Strangefolk closed out the set with their own originals, starting off with Weightless in Water’s “Valhalla” and “Chasing Away,” “Dance,” “…As,” and “Roads” following suit and “Walnut” closing out a special evening and a great three nights in a special intimate room. Strangefolk will play next this summer at the Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport, CT and in September at Lockn’ Music Festival.
Austin Carlile — singer for Of Mice & Men — was hospitalized for undisclosed reasons forcing the band to cancel the remaining dates of the “Full Circle Tour” in San Diego and Mexico City.
The band released the following statement on the situation.
“Austin Carlile was admitted to a hospital yesterday morning, and, per doctor’s orders, has been kept in overnight for evaluation. The band regrets not being able to perform for their fans and hopes to be back in [San Diego and Mexico City] as soon as possible.
“Refunds for both shows will be available at point of purchase. However, Of Mice & Men are planning to reschedule both shows for a later date in the year. We will have more news on this in the coming weeks and tickets holders are welcome to retain their tickets, as they will remain valid for these rescheduled dates.”
Central New York are you ready? It’s time to put the rumor’s to rest and see which bands held up and which bands we just in fact rumor’s. So finally, Syracuse’sK-Rock has announced the line-up for their 20th Anniversary edition of K-Rockathon, which will take place on Saturday July 25th, at the Chevy Court located inside the NYS Fairgrounds.
Some bands leaked the date early, confirming that they would in fact be on the show, just to have their post on social media sites taken down ten minutes later. The week leading up to the announcement, opener’s for the show confirmed on their social media sites that they would be there without it disappearing minutes later.
Now let’s hope for a bigger security presence, more food vendors than beer vendors, a cleaning crew to monitor garbage thrown about the area and finally the ability to keep the plastic cap to your water bottle this year!
Could Pantera finally reunite and headline a future Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival? Probably not but you never know, but if tour co-founder John Reese had his way it would have happened already Reese said in an interview with Examiner.com. Reese even went as far as to saying that he even approached the remaining member’s about the venture.
Reese stated “I’ve even approached them about doing it. Do I think it’s going to happen? I have no idea. I know that a heavy, heavy tragedy happened and there are some hard feelings, but it’s up to those three dudes to decide if they ever want to do something or not. If they would decide to do I would support it wholeheartedly and I would do whatever I could to be involved. But it’s up to them.”
Still shaken by his brother’s death for over 10 years now. Vinnie Paul has stated “Dime was Pantera,” he as has also stated about the possibility of a reunion “it would never happen and not interested.” Of course frontman Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown are open to the idea even with the bad blood that still remains between Paul and Anselmo. In 2004 Dimebag Darrell was shot and murdered by a fan on stage during the first minute of the first song in the set of a Damage Plan show in Columbus, Ohio.
Pantera released nine studio albums before the band officially broke in 2003.
The Second Annual Benefit for Suicide Prevention and Awareness – A Concert in Memory of Tim Rem will be held on June 13 at Parish Public House from 6pm until close. Music starts at 8pm Wiley Griffin and Friends followed by Groovestick.
Liam Bancroft, founder of the event, started this benefit not only raise money for suicide prevention and awareness, but to preserve the legacy of his cousin, Tim Rem. “Tim was a staple in the Albany scene and was an ardent supporter of music, both local and national,” said Bancroft. “He was instrumental in bringing Boombox to the Capital Region for the first time through his friendship with Zion Godchaux. Even though my family holds a golf tournament every year called the Brothers Classic and we participate in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk in Saratoga Springs every year, I felt it was imperative to hold a benefit that was closely linked with one of Tim’s greatest passions.” While preserving the legacy of Tim Rem is a primary focus of the benefit, an equally important focus will be on issues related to mental illness and serious depression that lead to suicide; two things that are closer to home than almost any other illness or disease.
With sponsors including Twiddle, WEQX Guthrie/Bell Productions, Dead Presidents Lounge, Parish Public House, Northern Lights Smoke Shop, Nanola, Heartspace Yoga and Healing Arts, The Machine Art Co-op, McGeary’s Irish Pub, DiCarlo’s, Albany Wine & Spirits, and Capital Wine, the benefit stands to be a strong night of music and fundraising. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

With Disc Jam quickly approaching this coming weekend, June 11 through 14, NYS Music spoke with festival founder to find out more about what makes the collaboration between music and disc golf so cool and also a little bit about what is to be expected.
This is a different experience from the other music festivals because of the on-site disc golf course designed specifically for this event. More than five years ago, the weekend had two pastimes: Going to music festivals and playing disc golf with friends. He aspired to combine the two.
Both events are similar in that they bring out people who like to have fun outdoors during rain or shine. The mindset is to welcome the idea of fun and community. The course welcomes beginners. It is set up on an eye level playing field creating difficulty somewhere in the middle of the skill set so that familiar players can have some challenge but at the same time new players will not be intimidated and can make some shots.
The construction of the lineup goes along with same mindset. With all the different types of music ranging from the funk and progressive rock of Dopapod to the organic electronic sounds of Phutureprimitive. The course is set up in harmonious location so that while playing the game all the music being played on the main stage can be heard. It can be played all day long for free, except during tournament time. Discs are up for loan courtesy of Explore Disc Golf, an Amherst, Massachusetts, based disc golf design firm. The fest has teamed up with Explore to design the official Disc Jam course.
The tournament is $35 per player and you will be playing for prizes such as festival merchandise, Vibram 5 Finger shoes, tickets for Disc Jam 2016 and everyone who signs up for the tournament receives a custom Disc Jam disc golf disc from Innova. When asked, in regards to the bands, if you compare disc golf skills to the skills someone has playing an instrument, they assured me, there was no comparison. So the challenge is out there for the featured musicians to come out and try their luck on the course.

Saturday was one of the best days at Mountain Jam 2015 with endless blue skies, electric green Catskills and another day full of incredible music to ponder. The thousands of festival goers happily greeted the day, feeling recharged as they hiked up the mountain with arms full of drinks, blankets, chairs and sunscreen.
It’s a brilliant concept to have vendors walking thru the music area, dragging coolers of cheap water and Gatorade, ensuring the best policy to rage is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
One of the most charming acts of the afternoon was Benjamin Booker, who brought an earthy back roads set on the West Stage with his sincere loud whisper of a voice. The violin and mandolin added a bluegrass tinge as Booker wailed on his guitar for a dirty rockabilly feel.
A light-hearted, upbeat island ambiance grew from the East Stage and climbed up Hunter Mountain as Rusted Root performed their worldly jams reminiscent of the 1990s. Michael Glabicki nearly broke his strings as he beat the hell out of his guitar and Patrick Norman laid out deep bass bombs. The music is a light mixture of Alice and Chains set in the Outback with a cowbell and washboard. It was Rusted Root’s first time at Mountain Jam and they were eager to share music from their latest album with “Save Me.” It was a new age funky groove with high vocals from Liz Berlin, a heavy percussion solo and frog-in-throat vocal effect from Glabicki. The set ended with their top hit, “Send Me on My Way,” that got the whole mountain stomping before casually coming down with an acoustic serenade.
Texas native, Alejandro Rose-Garcia, better known as Shakey Graves, dominated the West Stage. Performing with a drummer and bass player for most of the set, Graves was left alone for a few songs to be the one-man band he is infamous for. The trio gave off a high energy, down home fun as they jumped with rodeo flair all over the stage. Rebelution brought the West Coast vibe with their swells of brass, beach like melodies and layers of hip hop. An enthusiastic traditional reggae sound with skater park boundless horn peaks. The Rasta atmosphere blazed thru the day as The Wailers awakened the crowd with deeply rooted, rock steady reggae. They performed Bob Marley classics such as “Is This Love?”, “Could You Be Loved?” and “Stir it Up,” spreading island vibes all over the mountain and feeding off the crowd’s radiating appreciation. Festival partner and veteran, Warren Haynes took center stage for a second night with his band, Govt Mule. After the previous night of Dark Side of the Mule, many were looking forward to a set of original Mule tunes that as in the tradition of the festival. One of the highlights of the set was a nostalgic “Million Miles From Yesterday” with special sit ins from Elaine Caswell and Machan Taylor plus a Stevie Wonder’s cover of “Superstition”.
Once the sun went down under the mountain, the temperature significantly dropped causing many to immediately layer up and wrap themselves in each other in hopes to keep warm. The clear night sky revealed hundreds of stars and the captivating color changing forest surrounding the festival grounds. As bitter cold as it was, the sight was breathtaking. Headliner of the night, The Black Keys packed a heated set as drummer Patrick Carney and guitarist Dan Auerbach threw down a hard-hitting rock and roll session. The duo was joined by Richard Swift and John Wood for to create a powerful violent surge of solos that blew the roof off the East Stage. Carney and Auerbach shine best as a duo, proving all you need is a drum kit and guitar to move mountains. Thrashing about the stage with a soul-absorbing sound, it’s no wonder that the Black Keys are considered rock giants, having earned multiple Grammy Awards and platinum albums. The crowd screamed along with dusty garage favorites “Lonely Boy” and “Howlin’ For You,” soaking up the raw talent before them.
The Main Lodge served as a great refuge for the hour set break for those eager to warm up with a full bar, plenty of table seating and an art gallery featuring show posters and photography. Arc Iris took over the Healey Hall with eccentric girl next door pop with a twist of sorcery plus an impressive stand-up electric bassist. The Budos Band closed out the Hall with heavy metal horns and dark ska, sound beckoning the crowd closer to the small stage with big band momentum.
Big Gigantic was one of the top acts of the night with the heavy EDM tunes pumping out classic hip hop mashups with new school flavor. They are closest thing the festival saw to a rave, with hurtling glow sticks and peaks of bass drops that kept security on their toes. The electronic duo from Colorado featured Jeremy Salken pounding the hell out of his drums and Dominic Lalli doing his best Kenny G jazz saxophone work while jamming on his laptop, cranking out funky bass. The final day of Mountain Jam approaches with a buzzing lineup of Lake Street Dive, Amy Helm & The Handsome Strangers, returning act Michael Franti & Spearhead plus headliners Alabama Shakes. As Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) kicked off their 2015 Summer Concert Series, they couldn’t have picked a better choice to lead off with; Brian Setzer and George Thorogood & The Destroyers. Nothing like a rocking good time to set the bar high for the summer concert series.

Always a fan of both artists, I prepared myself for the evening with an umbrella to dodge the raindrops and my dancing shoes to splash in the puddles. Other than my camera equipment and trusty journalist notepad…I was all set. Despite the early downpour, the weather had no damper on the evening as attendees just took cover and rocked the night away.
First up was newcomer Davy Knowles. Known as a blues, rock, and Celtic rock musician, his acoustic set was fantastic. Knowles hails from the Isle of Man (England), and his charming style and manner warmed up the evening and helped chase away the rain as the night began. Although only six years into his professional career, his resume is chock full of gigs he’s played, with a list of legends he’s opened for that would make any musician green with envy. There is no doubt in my mind that in no time flat this young man is destined for bigger things.

Up next was Mr. Brian Setzer, and here is where the party began. There is no way every person in the venue wasn’t tapping their toes to the beats Setzer and his band were setting down. Brian Setzer lead off of course with lead vocal and lead guitar, but with Mark Winchester on bass, Kevin McKendree on keyboards and guitar, and Noah Levy on drums, this group of musicians played like they were just four musicians jamming out together and having a good time playing some great music. The fact that we were there watching…was just icing on their cake.

Their love of music is contagious and there is nothing that makes me smile more than seeing couples all over the venue taking to wherever they could find enough room to cut a rug while Setzer and his band played their famous rockabilly, swing, revival jumping, bluesy tunes. From hit to hit, they never let up, and the energy kept flowing. Heck my arms hurt just watching how fast Noah Levy played those drums. Piece of advice here, don’t arm wrestle that dude, he will stomp you. For the energy these guys put into their playing, the audience gave it back to them two-fold. As song after song played, more and more of the audience rose to their feet, and by the end of the evening, there was a crowd down at the edge of the stage getting photos and selfies with this amazing quartet as they played. This defnitiely was one hell of a set, and definitely a check of that bucketlist for me. May favorite tune, besides the obvious Stray Cat Strut, Great Balls of Fire, and Rock This Town, had to be a tie between his cover of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Bues and his encore of Sleep Walk. This may have been my frist time, but definitely won’t be the last time I see Mr. Brian Setzer and his amazing group of accompanying musicians.
As the stage was cleared, I couldn’t image anyone being able to follow that act and hold their own; until George Thorogood took to the stage. Although I have listened to this rocker since high school, this was the first opportunity to see him live. WOW is all I can say. He is a photographers dream performer. In addition to being one of the most talented musicians/guitar players around, he is the most animated performer. As he performed, he danced, he hit poses, he made animated faces. Hell, he entertained and then some. I read somewhere that he started out in the business to be a comedian. I can absolutely see how with a change of circumstances, he would still be on that very stage, just delivering one liners instead of some of rock and roll’s all time favorite tunes.
George Thorogood – CMAC
Together with high school friend and original band member, Jeff Simon on drums/percussion, George and Jeff are joined on stage by Billy Blough on bass, Jim Suhler on rhythm guitar, and Buddy Leach on saxophone/piano where together they ramp up the audience and have laid down some of rock and rolls greatest hits over a forty-year career. When asked about his career, the man quoted Stan Musial. Stan was asked “What was the greatest day of your career?” He replied, “Every day when I walk onto the field is the greatest day”. George feels the same “Every night when I walk on that stage is the highlight of my career. I hit that first chord, the band kicks in, and we hear the audience respond. That’s the rush. Over 40 years into this, and every night that’s still the only moment that matters.” Okay, as if I didn’t love this man already, quoting one of this lifetime Cardinals fan’s favorite Cardinal players just sealed the deal. George Thorogood, you are definitely BBBBBaddd to the Bone! You truly set that bar high for the rest of the 2015 Summer Concert Series to follow. Well played…well played.
