  • And Your NYS Music March Madness Winner is……

    moe.! It was a close one, but moe. eeked out victory over Eastbound Jesus to take the 2015 NYS Music March Madness crown!

    moe., the #1 seed from the Jam/Funk/Reggae region started in the first round beating out #16 Thunderbody by a total of 111-50. From there, the second round saw moe. beat #9 Mister F 130-68, followed by besting #4 Giant Panda 583-378. Moving into the Round of 8, moe. met up with old friends Conehead Buddha, the #6 seed and beat them by a total of 463-345, their closest match yet.

    Moving into the Final Four, moe. met Rock/Metal division winner #10 Wild Adriatic and beat them handily 469-243. It was onto the finals where moe. met Eastbound Jesus, the winner of the Folk/Bluegrass/Americana/Country, who snuck out victory over Jimkata by a total of 391-321. The finals resulted in moe. beating Eastbound Jesus in a squeaker that came down to the last minutes: 659-631

    Congrats to moe. on their victory! This contest is meant to give exposure to all of New York’s excellent bands and venues. Thanks to all our readers and the participating bands for being good sports and having fun with our “madness”. Keep coming back to NYSMusic for coverage of all these great bands and venues – they are all winners to us.

  • FESTY NEWS: MAYFest to Debut in NY Memorial Day Weekend

    The organizers of the ever popular Catskill Chill festival and the folks at Skybaby Yoga & Pilates have announced a brand new festival to take place May 22-24 at Surprise Lake Camp in Cold Spring NY. MAYfest – whose acronym refers to Music Arts and Yoga – will be family friendly and offer a variety of choices among the three themes.  The days of the fest will be focused on art and yoga workshops with much of the music happening in the afternoon well into the late night. Kids will have a ton of fun options including arts, crafts, a basketball court, board games and a chaperoned late night movie slumber party – allowing parents to have some alone time grooving to the tunes.

    Full weekend early bird passes are available now for $175 and include free camping and parking. Meal plans and on-site cabin rentals are also available for an additional cost. If you’re not the camping sort – single day passes are also for sale.

  • This Is Hardcore Festival Lineup Officially Announced

    This week the official lineup for This Is Hardcore Festival in Philadelphia, PA was announced.  Once again it will be held at the Union Transfer on July 23 and at the Electric Factory on July 24-26.

    Tickets go on sale Friday April 3 at 12PM EST and can be purchased here.

  • Brooklyn Based The End Men Preview Two Tracks off Upcoming Release

    The hard working  heavy blues rock band The End Men are ready to release their newest album – entitled Terms and Conditions – onto the world soon. The touring three piece consisting of Matthew Hendershot on vocals and guitars, Livia Ranalli on drums and percussion, and Matt Elia on Tenor Sax. The band calls Brooklyn their homebase – but they have strong ties to the Upstate New York region. They are part of the local musician collective Built4BBQ, which is comprised of acts like The Slaughterhouse Chorus and Henry’s Rifle, to name a few.

    The End Men’s newest record will be released on April 21 – as a digital download – with a vinyl pressing to follow shortly afterwards. Terms and Conditions was recorded at John Epperly’s 100 Metropolitan Brooklyn studio and engineered by Epperly and Bobbie Lurie. The album was mixed at Mavericks in Manhattan. The nine tracks (eight with a bonus track) were then mastered by Alex DeTurk, who is known for his work with Willie Nelson, Chris Cornell and David Bowie.

    NYS Music is proud to share the  release of two tracks from the record – “Morning Birds” and “East of West” via The End Men’s Bandcamp page. The tracks are a free download with accompanying artwork by Nick Dragotta – famed comic book artist of the Image Comics series East of West – which one of the tracks is inspired by. You can read more about how that song came to be over at Neon Gods. The culmination of all their hard work will be celebrated at Beast of Bourbon on April 25. Take a listen to the two tracks, and follow The End Men on their website for updates as the release date draws near.

  • NYS Music March Madness – The Championship Round

    Welcome to the sixth and final round of NYS Music’s March Madness! This is the finale of our tournament-style competition that pits jam titans moe. up against northern rockers Eastbound Jesus.

    This year’s 4 brackets were based on genres of music – Funk/Jam/Reggae, Metal/Rock, Bluegrass/Folk/Americana and Indie/EDM. Each bracket has 16 New York bands in their respective region, battling it out to reach the Final Four and claim this year’s title. Bands were chosen based upon their origins in New York and popularity in their respective genres. To look back on the battles, view previous rounds: Round 1 (64 teams), Round 2 (32 teams), Round 3 (16 teams), Round 4 (8 teams), and Round 5 (4 teams).

    In Round 5 the two matchups presented clear winners – moe., representing the Jam/Funk/Reggae division bested Metal/Rock/Punk division winners Wild Adriatic, while Eastbound Jesus from the Folk/Bluegrass/Americana/Country field beat out EDM/Indie division winner Jimkata. The finals pits two bands, one established and celebrating their 25th year, moe., against new arrivals on the bluegrass scene, Eastbound Jesus.

    Championship Round voting begins Thursday, April 2 and 2pm and ends Friday, April 3 at midnight. Get your votes in before the poll closes!

    The Finals Are finished. Check back for the results Monday, April 6 at noon.

  • FESTY NEWS: 5th Annual Strawberry Jam Family Reunion and Food Drive

    Shake off those winter blues and get ready for Festy season. One of the first fests of the 2015 season is the 5th Annual Strawberry Jam Family Reunion and Food Drive at Edgewood Mountain in Laurens New, York. This family friendly event takes place May 15– 17. Tickets are on sale now for $65 presale or $75 at the gate for the entire weekend including on site camping and room for RVs. There is an additional Pre-party on Thursday May 14 for $15. VIP tickets will be announced in two weeks and stay tuned for some surprise guests on the bill. The festival includes jam bands from NY in addition to several bands from the Virginia Beach area. Headlining the event is central NY favorite SLUG who is preparing to embark on a national tour over the 2015 summer festival season.  A full weekend of activities are also planned in typical festival style – bonfires, spinning and fire dancing, a Kiddie Camp and family village with interactive arts and crafts for all ages. In conjunction with the event a food drive will be conducted to benefit local food banks and any profits from the event will also be donated to them as well.

  • NYS Music March Madness 2016 – Final Four

    Welcome to Round 5 or better known as the “Final Four” of NYS Music’s March Madness 2016! This tournament-style competition includes the remaining 4 bands and artists who call New York their home.

    This year’s 4 brackets were based on genres of music – Funk/Jam/Reggae, Metal/Rock, Bluegrass/Folk/Americana and Indie/EDM. Each bracket has 16 New York bands in their respective region, battling it out to reach the Final Four and claim this year’s title. Bands were chosen based upon their origins in New York and popularity in their respective genres. To look back on the battles, view previous rounds: Round 1 (64 teams), Round 2 (32 teams), Round 3 (16 teams), and Round 4 (8 teams).

    In Round 4 we had some close matchups, but ultimately only four survived and started the cross genre matches. Representing the Folk/Bluegrass/Americana/Country category is the 8th seed out of the Albany area, Eastbound Jesus.  They will be going against the winner of the EDM/Indie/Other genre 3) Jimkata.

    In the other matchup, the  Jam/Funk/Reggae genre winner and New York legends and the only 1 seed remaining moe. will be facing up to the winner of the Metal/Rock/Punk division Wild Adriatic.

    Round 5 voting begins Monday, March 30 at Noon and ends on Wednesday April 1st at midnight. Round 6, or the Championships, will begin on April 2nd at noon.

  • Mister F “The Machine”

    For the third and last video for their brand new Snow Day Sessions EP – Mister F welcomes us to “The Machine.” The F are NY bred from the Albany area and feature brothers Matt and Ben Pickering on drums and bass, guitarist Andrew Chamberlaine, and jack of all keys Scott Hannay who gave us some details on the song’s background:

    “The Machine” was untitled during most of the Midwest tour –  it debuted on November ’14. We took suggestions from people, we thought of everything we could, but we just couldn’t come up with the *right* name, and didn’t want to just phone it in. We were in the van between shows watching a video of this guy, Bert Kreischer, on Joe Rogan’s podcast, telling a rather involved story about being abroad with a college class of his in Russia. He accidentally introduced himself as ‘The Machine’ to these Russian mobster bodyguards named Igor and Igor, and they laughed, partied, and took him in…and made him rob an entire train(and his classmates) with them. Obviously, we called the song “Igor and Igor”. That lasted for one show – we then decided that “The Machine” was more appropriate for the sound!

    Welcome to Round 4 or better known as the “Elite Eight” of NYS Music’s March Madness 2016! This tournament-style competition includes the remaining 8 bands and artists who call New York their home.

    This year’s 4 brackets are based on genres of music – Funk/Jam/Reggae, Metal/Rock, Bluegrass/Folk/Americana and Indie/EDM. Each bracket has 16 New York bands in their respective region, battling it out to reach the Final Four and claim this year’s title. Bands were chosen based upon their origins in New York and popularity in their respective genres.

    Since we are including all the genres together and you may not be familiar with all the bands, please take some time to check them out. The winner of each matchup will move on to the “Final Four” and go head to head with a band from another genres.  In the Folk/Bluegrass/Americana/Country category there are 8) Eastbound Jesus vs. 10) Blind Owl Band. In the EDM/Indie/Other genre are 5) Manhattan Project vs. 3) Jimkata. In the Jam/Funk/Reggae genre check out 1) moe. vs. 6) Conehead Buddha.  Wrapping things up in the Metal/Rock/Punk division are 12) Jesus Christ & the Hallucinogenic Allstars vs. 10) Wild Adriatic.

    Round 4 voting begins Friday, March 27 at Noon and ends on Sunday March 29th at midnight. Round 5 (The Final Four) will begin on March 30, with additional rounds announced on the NYS Music Facebook page.

    This year’s 4 regions are based on genres of music – Funk/Jam/Reggae, Metal/Rock, Bluegrass/Folk/Americana and Indie/EDM. Each region has 16 Upstate New York bands in their respective region, battling it out to reach the Final Four and claim this year’s title. Bands were chosen based upon their origins in Upstate and popularity in their respective genres.

    Since we are including all the genres together and you may not be familiar with all the bands, please take some time to check them out. In the Folk/Bluegrass/Americana/Country category there is 8) Eastbound Jesus vs. 4) Floodwood and 11) North & South Dakotas vs. 10) Blind Owl Band. In the EDM/Indie/Other genre are 1) Ani Difranco vs. 5) Manhattan Project and 3) Jimkata vs. 2) Phantogram.     Round 3 voting began March 24 at Noon and ends at midnight on Thursday March 26th at midnight. Round four (Elite 8) will begin on March 27, with additional rounds announced on the NYS Music Facebook page.
