{"id":1142,"date":"2014-12-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-12-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/2014\/2014\/12\/03\/josh-ritter-and-the-beast-within\/"},"modified":"2014-12-03T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-12-03T00:00:00","slug":"josh-ritter-and-the-beast-within","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/2014\/2014\/12\/03\/josh-ritter-and-the-beast-within\/","title":{"rendered":"Josh Ritter and The Beast Within"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI\u2019m singing for the love of it, have mercy on the man who sings to be adored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an industry inundated with flash, flare and over the top shock-inducing antics, <a href=\"http:\/\/joshritter.com\/\">Josh Ritter<\/a> employs nothing by way of tactic. \u00a0In fact, there is nothing exceptional to note of the author-singer-songwriter from Moscow, Idaho. \u00a0No fancy foot pedals, no blinding light displays, no revealing bootie shorts. \u00a0Nope, just an every-guy and his acoustic guitar.<\/p>\n<p>What begs consideration however is the depth of his musical catalog and the urgency with which he performs to his loyal following of folk\/Americana aficionados. \u00a0As a performer, Josh exhibits a boyish charm; an ease and accessibility granted through wide eyes and a cheek-straining smile. \u00a0He seems almost smitten to play the songs that he himself has penned. \u00a0Like somewhere in the silence of his own head he is begging the question, \u201cIs this really happening?\u201d. \u00a0This humility and enthusiasm proves infectious to his audience, and those who packed into Water Street Music Hall on a frigid Friday night in November were no exception.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Ritter\u2019s current tour, based distantly on the heels of his 2013 LP <em>A Beast in it\u2019s Tracks<\/em>, is a minimalist presentation and a treat for fans of all things acoustic. \u00a0No frills here. \u00a0Just he and longtime collaborator Zachariah Hickman on string accompaniment, along with a smattering of original folk music that dates back 15 years. \u00a0The audience listened in delight as the duo opened with \u201cMonster Ballad\u201d, \u201cBonfire\u201d and the foot-stompin\u2019 \u201cMe and Jiggs\u201d from the 2000 LP <em>The Golden Age of Radio.<\/em> \u00a0The set chugged along for over two hours, highlighted by classics such as \u201cCurse The Rose\u201d, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/2014\/05\/21\/7th-annual-delfest-heads-to-cumberland-maryland\/\">Cumberland<\/a>\u201d and the painfully revealing yet aptly titled \u201cHopeful\u201d, a song from his current album that chronicles his divorce from musician Dawn Landes in 2011. \u00a0The encore was short and sweet, comprising of the \u201cSo the World Runs Away\u201d B-Side \u201cGalahad\u201d and the all-time Ritter classic \u201cKathleen\u201d from 2003\u2019s <em>Hello Starling<\/em>\u00a0LP.<\/p>\n<p>As the show drew to a close, Josh and Zach pulled back on the strumming and gave the audience it\u2019s long overdue vocal solo:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll have you back by break of day. I\u2019m going your way anyway. If you\u2019d like to come along.
