  • May Day Throw Down with The Word & Kung Fu at The Cap

The historic Capitol Theatre hosted a night of funk and soul on May 1st thanks to supergroups Kung Fu and The Word. The small crowd of over 500 people left more than enough dance room on the wide open GA floor and prime seating in the loge/balcony with universal grand views of the architecture and visionary light show. The Cap is larger than life with its numerous chandeliers, deep colors of carpeted floors and tall ceilings that glow with the psychedelic projections that glide over the venue.

    20140501 - The Word 19

Kung Fu started the evening with a brief set of electrifying rock and funky heavy jazz with members of RAQ and The Breakfast. The dirty rhythm of Adrian Tramontano with the deep bass notes of Chris DeAngelis was the ideal groove to get the night moving. Todd Stoops kept both hands busy on two different sets of keys throughout the set as Rob Somerville blasted light-hearted funk melodies. Kung Fu will bring their lethal funk to festivals this year such as Disc Jam, Gathering of the Vibes and Catskill Chill.

    20140501 - Kung Fu 11

The Word was greeted with overwhelming cheers and general excitement for a night with the quintet of musical masterminds, as well as this being a rescheduled show for the original date in February. The Word reunites Robert Randolph on steel lap guitar, John Medeski on keyboards, Chris Chew on bass and brothers Cody Dickinson on percussion and Luther Dickinson on guitar for the first time since 2012. The Word performed an outstanding three-hour set full of slip sliding guitar licks, crashing cymbals and rejuvenating organ chords full of bluesy rock. Medeski swam laps over the keys with hard-hitting strokes of spiritual reckoning.

    20140501 - The Word 15

Randolph is an A+ entertainer as he karate chops and both figuratively and literally licks the lap steel strings with a smile in his chair or on his feet. Luther Dickinson energized the crowd with his head to head strumming with Randolph and overall, southern rock flair. The big man himself, Chris Chew, laid out a consistent, booming rhythm much to the delight of the fans and band members after his personal health hiatus back in 2012. The Word will be performing at the Jam Cruise 13 but you can catch individual members, Robert Randolph and the Family Band at Mountain Jam Music Festival, John Medeski will be at this year’s Lockn’ Festival and North Mississippi Allstars members will be touring Europe for the summer. The Word continues to bring together music lovers and band members for a fusion of gospel rocking funk to create a unique and instrumental experience.

  • UMBowl V Themes Announced: Odds Are Everyone Wins

Umphrey’s McGee is an innovative band. Striving to provide new experiences for fans with things like sUMmer school, the headphones and snowcones experience, and their subscription model website allowing unlimited access to content for a reasonable monthly fee, the band elevates itself above the pack before you even get to the face melting music. Nothing substantiates this innovation more than the annual UMbowl with version V coming up next.

Starting in 2010 this 4 set experience unites the audience and band into one unit, with all quarters featuring fan interaction that constantly changes. Not surprisingly, these shows sell out immediately and this years fifth rendition is no exception. Taking place at the esteemed Capital Theater May 3rd in Portchester NY, this years themes should have fans mouths watering in anticipation. Here is the breakdown straight from Umphreys.com:

    Q1.

Ah . . . Jimmy Stewart. You never let us down. How much you’ve given all of us through the years. Raw Stewage returns for a three-peat. UMBowl V kicks off with an entire set of your favorite pieces of improv stitched together to create a long-form piece of new music. Ticket buyers will vote on their favorite live moments, and the band will take those Legos and assemble them into one tidy package for Q1. The Raw Stewage quarter has evolved into a song incubator as it continues to spawn new UM originals year after year.

    Q2.

The evening rolls along with the ever popular All Request Quarter. All ticket buyers receive a ballot to vote for the songs you ‘d most like to hear, from rarer UM tunes to alternate versions of “the hits” to classic covers, including multiple new, unreleased options . As in the past, there will also be a write-in category for you to submit your own requests.

    Q3.

Q3 is a Stew Art Event, an S2. This one of kind Umphrey’s innovation returns to the UMBowl for its 5th year. The band will play a full set of improvisation based exclusively on themes, ideas, scenes, and concepts presented by fans. Entries will be submitted via text message by those in attendance and the best of the best will be added to the playbook. The selected themes will appear before both the band and audience in real-time so split second decisions will be paramount. Expect handoffs and Hail Mary’s as one musical idea is lateral to another. The Stew Art Event has become a UM staple

    Q4.

Rounding out the festivities will be the Choose Your Own Adventure experience. Those in attendance will be calling the plays, quarterbacking the music to unfold at your will. A series of choices will be presented to the audience on large projection screens and you will decide the set list in real-time. Voting will occur via text message and the results will be tallied as they roll in. You’ll be able to choose from a wide variety of UM originals, improvisational styles, and cover songs. You pick the plays and determine the strategy to make it a killer set. This one is in your hands. Don’t blow it.

  • The McLovins Shine ‘Beautiful Lights’ on Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre

The marquee at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester may not have been lit but the lights were shining on stage at Garcia’s as Hartford-based improv/rock quartet The McLovins hosted a CD release party for their newest (and fourth) album, Beautiful Lights.

The somewhat mild weather didn’t bring out a large crowd on that Thursday evening, which worked to create a more intimate feel to the show. Despite this, the band didn’t fall back on treating it as a rehearsal and brought a decent amount of energy to their performance, especially during their second set.

mclovins The first set kicked off with the 2010 single “Cohesive,” a collaboration The McLovins wrote and recorded with Tom Marshall (Phish lyricist) and Ant Krizan (of Spin Doctors fame). After getting the room warmed up the band gained more momentum and gave the crowd a good taste of their new album, which made up a significant portion of this set. Unlike McLovins shows of the past the first half of the show was less jam-and-shred heavy and focused more on the straight ahead performance of the new material close to how it was recorded – an intentional move by the band to explore new creative areas. A highlight of this was the title track (an instrumental piece) off the album that features a few simple, yet beautiful ideas that could serve as a conduit for a much longer live performance as the band grows with it.

mclovinsAfter a set break with time to gaze at the numerous photos of Jerry Garcia cladding the walls of the venue, The McLovins started with more energy reflected both on stage and in the crowd. Early on in the set a little sampling of head candy was dished out with a tease of the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen.” About mid-set the band broke out one of their staple earlier tracks, “Tokyo Tea,” which guitarist Justin Berger channeled a few of the familiar guitar tones of Trey Anastasio during many of his improvised riffs directly leading into a refreshing jam on “2001.” More songs from Beautiful Lights were featured including “Birthday,” which was the strongest live performance from the new album as they worked in the cohesive improv they have established their name with. To wrap up the show, The McLovins gave a nice rendition of “The Weight” with each band member taking a turn on one of the verses.

For a young band whose members are still in college, The McLovins can pull together strong performances while showing they are eager to explore new areas and make their next show better than the last. The band has been in its current lineup for roughly two years now – Jake Huffman (drums/vocals), Jason Ott (bass/vocals), Justin Berger (guitar/vocals), and Atticus Kelly (keys/guitar/vocals). With this amount of time together and the release of Beautiful Lights the band is making a new statement about their determination to make it to bigger places. The McLovins have been able to generate a lot of energy with larger festival audiences in the past and it is worth anticipating their next festival stop after the release of Beautiful Lights.

  • The McLovins to Shine Beautiful Lights and Jams on Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre February 20

    1623686_10152863585034057_1848781693_n

Hartford based jam/rock group The McLovins will be shining some beautiful lights on Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre February 20th as they host a CD release party for their latest album Beautiful Lights.

Their fourth full-length studio album, Beautiful Lights, is also the first release written by the band’s current lineup. Produced by Ant Krizan (Spin Doctors), the album marks a turn in the band’s sound and approach to writing. Jake Huffman (drums/vocals) tells that the band, whose members are still in college, has taken a more structured and mature approach to crafting the album. That, however, does not take away from the live performances for which they are recognized and promises for a strong live performance of tracks from their new album after coming off an 11-stop tour in the Southeast last month.

The McLovins have evolved immensely since they gained notoriety from a 2008 basement cover of Phish’s “You Enjoy Myself” posted on YouTube. They draw on eclectic influences to create incredible live performances with intricate improvisation and harmonies. This stage presence has rewarded the band with several festival appearances including Gathering of the Vibes, Mountain Jam and Bella Terra, among others.

Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 day of and available here. Doors: 6pm; Show: 9pm.

Check out the official video for the song “Birthday” off of Beautiful Lights here:

  • Local Limelight: The Garcia Project – Creating The Jerry Garcia Band Experience

The Garcia Project, based in Saratoga Springs, is a faithful conduit for the music of Jerry Garcia Band, conveying emotional resonance through the music that Jerry Garcia fans have known for decades. The Garcia Project includes Mik Bondy on guitar and vocals, and Kat Walkerson on vocals. A cavalcade of musicians join them in various lineups, including Greg Marshall, Jordan Giangreco (The Breakfast, Viral Sound) and Scott Guberman rotating in on keys, Dan Crea, David Alderman and Fred Wilkes on bass and Bob McKeon, Aaron Martin and Brian Sayers on drums on any given night. While the lineup can change from show to show, it’s always The Garcia Project!

    the garcia project

Additionally, Mik and Kat perform the songs of the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band tunes in their our own arrangements, as Acoustically Speaking.

Kat Walkerson has a truly soulful voice, displaying great energy with her passion pouring out from her vocals. A kind soul that brings a warmth to any room she performs in, her voice is a perfect compliment to Mik’s, who is The Garcia Project’s “Jerry”, a part he plays with humility and focus on the music to channel the spirit of the Fat Man. In paying tribute to Jerry, Mik has made two guitars and replica speakers and equipment to bring about the true Garcia sound. Previously, Mik was in the band Tapestry for over 20 years. Recently, Mik and Kat have performed with Melvin Seals and the guys from JGB Band.

Pete Mason: How does The Garcia Project channel the sound and spirit of Jerry Garcia Band?

Mik Bondy: Everyone in The Garcia Project loves the music that the Jerry Garcia Band created. We are all huge fans of Jerry. And much like us, the folks that come out to share in the experience are huge Jerry fans too. This makes the synergy between the musicians and the audience very strong, right from the start. Couple that synergy with professional, seasoned musicians that really want to provide and recreate a Jerry Garcia Band experience and really care about the music and the performance of it – and you have the recipe. We also study the music and the various eras, we build instruments and rigs that mimic the sound and styles. We always do a group huddle before we perform a show and thank Jerry for the music and ask his blessing on what we are about to create with the people. We fell very blessed and are thrilled that folks keep coming out and enjoy it as much as we do. Its really all about the love of the music.

PM: What sets The Garcia Project apart from the other well know Jerry Garcia Band act, Melvin Seals and JGB?

MB: Melvin Seals and JGB are great friends of ours. Kat performed with Melvin and JGB a few times back in 2010-2011. Both Kat and I recently performed with Melvin and members of JGB up in Saranac Lake, NY and Melvin Seals performed as keyboard player for The Garcia Project last year (and will again this year) at Jerry Jam, the best Jerry festival in the Northeast. We really love and respect Melvin and the JGB band.

Melvin Seals has his own new arrangements of songs and writes his own custom set lists. The Garcia Project has been recreating classic Jerry Garcia Band shows and sets and attempts to perform in the same style and tempo as each show and era. Each era has it’s own flavor.  We recently did a 77 show at Mexicali Live that there was no recording of the original JGB show, so we pieced together the show from other recordings from the year for reference and then performed it in that style. Both bands have very unique sound and we love what we both add to the scene.

Listen to the whole Mexicali Blues show where we recreated JGB Nov 16, 1977

PM: Why the music of Jerry Garcia Band? Why not Grateful Dead songs?

Kat Walkerson:  Our love for the Grateful Dead is equal to our love of Jerry Garcia Band. If not for attending Grateful Dead shows, we wouldn’t have known about Jerry Band. Even back when Jerry was around, JGB was much lesser known and attended. It was something special that you were lucky to stumble upon. We feel that the Jerry Garcia Band catalog is an extraordinary collection of wonderful songs. Many of them are songs not original to the Jerry Garcia Band. They were songs that Jerry picked out because they were special. Adding to that, he mixed them all up, rearranging them and making them the style of music that is Jerry Band. We all agreed and loved them too. And we loved what happened to us as a community when we gathered for this music. This music creates a special space, a fertile ground where positive things grow. Love, friendship, community, healing, forgiveness, progress in general.  Jerry Band is a love and connection fest of the purest nature. We always say “The Grateful Dead is like Saturday night, and Jerry Garcia Band is like Sunday morning”. What is created and experienced when we all gather and enjoy this music together is something that  should continue.  So, as we love the grateful dead, and play some whenever we can fit it in, we focus on the Jerry Band catalog. Like the Grateful Dead, there is also decades worth of this music, so many great musicians rolled through the band in (30?+) years. There is so much to hear and enjoy. We want to do our part to make sure this music gets and stays out there.

PM:Is there a certain year or era of Jerry Garcia Band that you particularity enjoy the most? Why?

MB: I really love all of the eras, really. But the 1977-78 Jerry Garcia Band shows have been firing me up recently. I love the tempos and the arrangements.

    KW: All equally

Bob McKeon: Late 1970s and late 1980s.

Dan Crea: 1978 with Donna and Maria.1977 counts too but there was no Maria, and I’m a big fan of hers.  I like the open space that Keith left between his notes and how his sound kept the mix nice and open.  Great “Lonesome’s” in this era!

PM:  Where do you think you’ll be in five years?

MB: We would love to travel and take the music of Jerry Garcia to many more people around the world. With the right team, I could see us touring and playing venues all around the world.

  • JRAD Captivates The Capitol Theatre, December 27, 2013

On December 27, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (JRAD) closed The Capitol Theatre down for 2013 with their second-ever performance. Comprised of Russo, Marco Benevento, Scott Metzger, Dave Dreiwitz and Tom Hamilton, the quintet showed why they wowed audiences in January with their debut show at The Brooklyn Bowl. Their set was largely changed up from that show, so for those who have seen both performances they experienced two varied shows, in the spirit of all things Grateful Dead.

    DSC08356 (1) copy

Starting off with a psychedelic take on “Cream Puff War” the group was firing on all cylinders off the bat. A surprisingly long “Truckin’”, followed after a beautiful transition as the band jammed it out, endlessly dropping straight into a one-two punch of “Dupree’s Diamond Blues” and “Cumberland Blues.”  A quick break in the action allowed Joe to welcome everyone to the venue and thanked them for coming out.  Every song seemed to push the envelope of what a Grateful Dead song could sound like and it all came to a head with a 15 minute set closing “Shakedown Street.”  This version is a must hear as it was ripped right out of discotheque and the audience knew it, dancing their hearts out for the entirety of the song.

After a short break, the band returned, starting up the set with a wild “Space” that went into an amazing “Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain” combo.  This combo took about half an hour to complete and every second was worth it. The “Fire” was an absolute barn burner and really got the second set going. They teased songs throughout their performance, most notably during “Playin’ in the Band” with “The Eleven/The Other One” before going right back into a spacey jam. These jams truly dominated the evening and validated the claim that JRAD is the best Dead-related act out there. The group ended the set with a perfect “Terrapin Station” that seemed endless.  Smiles were seen throughout the building during the opening chords of the suite. A half hour later, the group was walking off the stage before their encore of “Brokedown Palace.”

    DSC08591 (1) copy

The evening was a beautiful way for many people in town for the Phish run to start the end of the year.  Joe Russo has gone on record saying that these shows will be few and far between to ensure they maintain their special quality. This concert showed the crowd that there is still hope for all things Grateful Dead related, whether there is an original member in the band or not.  Joe Russo’s Almost Dead is sure to play a show or two again this coming year and if they do, run, don’t walk, to make sure you get to see it.

Set 1: Cream Puff War > Truckin’ > Dupree’s Diamond Blues > Cumberland Blues, Row Jimmy,  Bertha, Easy Wind > Shakedown Street

Set 2: Space > Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain, Playin’ in the Band, Althea, Turn on You Lovelight, Terrapin Station

    Encore: Brokedown Palace
