Yet Another Big Weekend Coming at Willow Creek Winery July 25-26

Willow Creek Winery will be jumping again this weekend with two days of music. It all starts Friday night July 25, with Badfish-A Tribute to Sublime headlining with special guests Tropidelic and Whiskey Reverb. Saturday will be headlined by Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad with special guests Preach Freedom, Mosaic Foundation, The B-Side Dubs and Funktional Flow.

Badfish-A Tribute To Sublime is a tribute band that was formed in 2001. They have been selling out shows and touring for quite some time and have been giving Sublime fans something to fill their souls since Brad Nowell’s untimely death back in 1996, dissolving Sublime.

Tropidelic who comes from Kent, Ohio, and most recently played at Willow Creek Winery for the 2014 Buffalove Music Festival, won a lot of fans over with their music. Coming back to the same venue should get some fans real pumped up. Combining hip hop, funk, reggae and some cool masks on stage, Tropidelic is surely a must see.

Whisky Reverb will also be the special guest on Friday night, this band was also on this past Buffalove Music Festivals bill. The band hails from Buffalo and has been touring the past few years to about 125 shows a year. They keep evolving and they are becoming a must see band. Check them out and you won’t be disappointed.

If one night isn’t enough music for you, you can camp optionally for 10 dollars and check out the following day full of music with Rochester’s Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Preach Freedom, Mosaic Foundation, The B-Side Dubs and Buffalo’s Funktional Flow. GPSDS produces a psychedelic roots reggae sound that will send jolts through your body of euphoria. The group has been touring extensively the past few years as well as some of the country’s premier festivals. The quintet plays so well with each other adding their own layers together producing an improvisational jam that you will want to be part of.

Preach Freedom brings his soulful happy music to the winery and will get everyone in the right mindset the whole day. Mosaic Foundation comes from the Finger Lakes region, they bring their Roots Reggae to the Winery. The Group is Unique and diverse and will surely get everyone ready for the evening. The B-Side Dubs, whose members all have different musical backgrounds bring it all together producing a groovy reggae tone with a psychedelic vibe.

Willow Creek Winery is no stranger to Funktional Flow, and the band has played their in more than a few occasions. They blew the doors off at Buffalove Music Festival this year, played a great set opening for Conspirator and I would expect no different this coming weekend. You will want to make sure you are front and center when Flow hits the stage. You can grab your tickets through Ticketfly or at the gate.

Hearing Aid: Mosaic Foundation “Signs Of The Time”

Rochester reggae stalwarts Mosaic Foundation have released their latest album, Signs of The Times and have announced a big CNY show with The Moho Collective on Saturday, March 8th at The Lost Horizon in Syracuse. This will be the first time both bands have appeared at the legendary club and a fantastic opportunity for folks to see these two spectacular Rochester-based bands together. Skip to the end for details, but let’s check out the album first.

Mosaic Foundation has been plying their trade around the Northeast for half a decade, always danceable and infectious, open and joyful, reflective of the vibe and groove of their loosely framed genre. The disc jumps out of the gate with “We Can Make It If We Try”, a signature sounding anthem, reflective and positive, upbeat and uplifting, as Cha Cha establishes his vocal command and a flat-out infectious groove. “Reggae Escape” stretches the authenticity of Cha Cha’s voice and the band’s message, “This music is used to settle disputes … used to teach the youth their roots … righteous truths brothers.” The variety of pacing used here keeps the listener anticipating the next, whether driven by JP’s drums or Ken’s funky scratches. “My Planet”, then “Helping Hands” express the joy and sorrow of existence balanced against the perspective of survival and giving, the basic inter-connective tissue between everyone.

The title track picks up the theme and puts a bounce under it, letting the positive outweigh the negative, giving it breath to keep up the fight. Allowing space for reflection and vision while following a true path set before them. “Stand Firm” feels like a homage to those who’ve gone before them and a rallying cry to those they stand shoulder to shoulder with. It’s defiant, it’s firm, but the heartfelt joy comes out on top. “Abundance Of Water” is a call to arms of sorts, asking for vision from those living merely in the present. Then “San Kofa” spins forward the guitars and the band feels the up-shift in pacing, and depth of message, intensifying their passion for both.

“Praises” shows the true authenticity of Mosaic Foundation, each member’s musical instinct understands spacing, pacing and breathing. Reggae must be felt, perhaps more than any other genre, there’s a natural motion implied and if it doesn’t move you, it falls flat. There’s none of that here. “Harder The Battle” remains expressive of the struggle and what will overcome it, unity, love, strength, honesty and joy. “Harder the battle, sweeter the victory” indeed. “Jellyfish”, the closer, let’s the boys cut it loose and jam a little, the mix of the keys is deep and layered, evoking layers of feeling like an oceanic trip. The piano is exemplary, the guitar tasty and the rhythm solid, the idea of closing with an instrumental is unique and confident. Very cool stuff, well played and much respect!

One Last Party at Rochester’s Dub Land Underground

After seven years, Dub Land Underground will be closing their doors for good—but not without one more jam-packed evening bringing together some of Rochester’s favorite bands. Dub Land, which has been a staple of Rochester’s music venues (specifically for jam bands and psychedelic DJs), is ready to say goodbye with a bang, featuring sets from area favorites Roots Collider, Haewa, Mosaic Foundation, Ocupanther, Neurocepter and Tim Tones. There will also be DJ sets throughout the night, with past RIPROC artists throwing down one last set.

The farewell is sure to be bittersweet, but local music fans can expect to see Dub Land go out on a high note, with music starting at 7PM and lasting until 4AM. The show is this Friday, January 10th, and with tickets costing only $10 (21+) / $15 (18+) for virtually nine hours of non-stop tunes, Dub Land’s Last Call is the only show in town.
