  • moe. to ring in 25th year at the Palace

    moe.canalside6-19-14-50moe. will ring in their 25th year as a band with a two-night run at the Palace Theatre in Albany.

    This will be the second year in a row that Jim, Vinny, Rob, Al and Chuck will take the stage at the Palace Dec. 30 and 31. Fans are hoping for a special pair of shows to start moe.’s silver anniversary. Band members wore suits for every show in their 20th anniversary year.

    Last year, moe. opened the New Year’s Eve show with the band rising out of the stage and playing five acoustic songs before a sweet segue into the electric part of the set. In their third set, after midnight, they were joined onstage by the horn section from Conehead Buddha, plus the Paul Simon cover “Late in the Evening” was aided by a few of the band members’ children on various instruments. The show included three debut covers, including an amazing version of “Spanish Moon” by Little Feat, plus two bust-outs that hadn’t been heard since 2012. Each of the moe. band members donned furry animal costumes for a set, some of which showed up again in other 2014 shows.

    The Conehead Buddha horns are slated to join moe. again this year for the 12/31 show. That late announcement, coming two-and-a-half weeks before the run, has been a bit controversial among moe.rons. The horns were an exciting addition last New Year’s Eve, but they’ve joined the band for a number of New York shows in the last year including moe.down, Buffalo and the Saranac Brewery shows in Utica, all of which are considered hometown shows for moe. in one way or another and tend to be highly attended by regular fans. Some .rons who value the unpredictability of a moe. show have complained that the setlists are too similar when the CB horns join the band, but others have faith in moe. to bring the heat and continue to surprise their fans.

    moe. formed at the University of Buffalo in 1989, and they moved to Albany in the ’90s to develop as a band. There they grew alongside Conehead Buddha on the Albany jam band scene.

    On the 30th, the popular Vermont-based jam band Twiddle will open for moe.

    It’s been too long for many moe.rons. The band has been taking a break from the road since they wrapped up a West Coast tour Nov. 8 and played at, One More for the Fans, a concert celebrating the songs of Lynyrd Skynyrd, in Georgia in mid-November. They haven’t played an East Coast show since September.

  • Crowbar, Unearth, Blow The Roof Off Bogies In Albany Last Wednesday

    Bogies of Albany brings Upstate New York some of the heaviest shows, continued the tradition by bringing in New Orleans sludge metal icons Crowbar, with support from Massachusetts’ Unearth, up and coming Black Crown Initiate, plus local bands Gunther Weezul and 40 Dead Men.

    The place was packed, despite the heavy snowstorm that swept through the entire state of New York that night. Proof that great metal bands will still draw a crowd, no matter what. This marks the first time I have been to a show at Bogies. I will say I plan on coming back to more. Great venue, great sound, with an awesome bar and very intimate. Just sucks there’s no place to park. Very similar to the Montage Music Hall in Rochester.

    Unfortunately for me, since I was driving from Syracuse in the loveliest of weather, I missed the local openers but made it on time for Black Crown Initiate, an appropriate band to tour with Crowbar with very heavy prog metal. Black Crown Intimate seemed to be very liked by the younger crowd. It was the perfect band to headbang to. Vocalist James Dorton, guitarists Andy Thomas and Nick Shaw all split vocal duties but they make it work on stage appropriately. Incredibly heavy and talented band.

    Once Unearth got on stage, that’s when the crowd erupted and the mosh pits opened up and few bodies flew across the top of the crowd. They were by far the fastest band of the night. Frontman Trevor Phipps was all over the stage and the band was really clutch. Not really the kind of band you would expect to tour with Crowbar because it’s a different kind of metal but it was still very enjoyable.

    Crowbar finally graced the stage and proved that there’s NONE FUCKING HEAVIER. It was an absolute treat to finally hear some slow, heavy, ugly, sludge metal to make my ears bleed live for the first time in my life. To hear those down-tuned guitars and the deep and scary vocals from Guitarist/Vocalist Kirk Windstein was just surreal. The current lineup for Crowbar is rounded off by Tommy Buckley on drums, Matthew Brunson on guitars, and newcomer Jeff Golden on bass, former bassist Pat Bruders wound up staying with Down last year. Their set couldn’t have started with a better song as they opened with “Cemetery Angels.” To hear the breakdown at the end with Kirk screaming “BRING IT DOWWWWWN!!!!!!” you know shit got real. The crowd went bananas just throwing their fist, stomping their feet and banging their heads.

    The band kept the momentum rolling by playing some new tracks with ”Walk With Knowledge Wisely” and “Symmetry In White.” Some other great highlights of the show were the classics like “Self Inflicted,” “Conquering,” “High Rate Extinction,” and “All I Had (I Gave).” Crowbar went through their set relatively quick only taking a few breaks. With no encore the band closed off the night with the popular “Planets Collide” and the classic from their first album Vacuum.

    Overall a great show, but Crowbar was boss. This is the rawest, purest form of sludge metal you will ever get. Anyone who missed this show should be kicking themselves in the head because Crowbar rarely tours through upstate New York. I had the pleasure of speaking to Kirk Windstein before their set. Let me just say he was a gentlemen. He hung out with people after the show as well. I got the chance to talk to him about the new album and some of his future plans. Windstein confirmed there will be another Kingdom Of Sorrow album. Until then, it’s all about Crowbar. And we should all be embracing it.

  • Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Exodus Level Albany’s Washington Avenue Armory

    As major touring season is coming to a close and a memorable year of concerts approaching to an end, The Washington Avenue Armory was graced by metal’s best bands: Exodus, Suicidal Tendencies, and main headliner Slayer, to a three thousand plus crowd on November 25. Before, during, and after the show, there lots of people screaming “Slayerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!”

    I was late arriving to the show after being stuck in traffic and the line to show was still massive when I arrived, so I wound up missing most of Exodus set, but managed to catch their last two songs “The Toxic Waltz” and “Strike Of The Beast.” Judging by the crowd, they definitely made an impact, they sounded loud, clean, and vital as ever. The recent arrival of vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza couldn’t have come at a better time for the band.

    When Suicidal Tendencies hit the stage, they whipped the crowd clean across the floor. I have never seen any band perform they way they do. It was like they had five frontmen in the band because all five of them were all over the place. Vocalist Mike Muir at age 51 is going absolutely bananas on stage and performs better than any twenty-something person from what I can tell. They opened with my favorite song, “You Can’t Bring Me Down.” Although Mike Muir is the only original member left in S.T., this currently lineup has something special going on and S.T. is here to stay for a long time.

    Suicidal Tendencies also did a great job doing a set list that contained songs that were more “thrashier” to really please the crowd. The second song they played was “Freedumb” before getting the crowd to participate in the classic “War Inside My Head.” After they played “Subliminal” the band took a break and Mike Muir addressed the crowd about the bands history and their love for skateboarding and played one of their trademark songs, “Possessed To Skate.” Then what was probably the highlight of their set, they played “I Saw Your Mommy” before ending their set with “Cyco Vision” and “Pledge Your Allegiance.” I was kind of surprised they didn’t pay tribute to Tim Williams who sadly passed away recently, but did have t-shirts of him over at the merch table. They didn’t play “Institutionalized” but they didn’t need to with such a good performance.

    Finally, Slayer arrived on the stage to make everyone’s ears bleed. This time through, Slayer’s production was massive with four giant upside down crosses hanging above the stage and multiple backdrops throughout their set. They played for almost two hours, ripping through their set, going song after song taking very minimal breaks. Guitarist Gary Hoyt who is pulling a double duty on this tour with Exodus and Slayer, was on stage replacing the late Jeff Hanneman, and did a respectable job in playing Hanneman’s parts. Paul Bostaph was behind the kit, also doing a hell of a job. If you were blind, you would not even know it’s not the original lineup. Tom Araya sounds furious as he ever did, and Kerry King is still boss on guitar.

    Now for me, I did see the original lineup five years ago and it was sad not to see Hannaman there, but it’s a damn shame things didn’t work out with Dave Lombardo, but if it was your first time seeing Slayer, you wouldn’t care because their performance was clutch and top notch. They opened with “World Painted Blood” and other highlights included “Chemical Warfare,” “War Ensemble,” “Hell Awaits,” and “Jesus Saves.” But the best part of the show was when they played “Seasons In The Abyss” because just about all of their set was heavy, up tempo songs, but when they switched it up and played “Seasons In The Abyss,” hearing a slower song seemed to stand out more, and the stage lights went from what was primarily red through the whole show to yellow. At the end of their set, they wrapped things up with their trademark “Raining Blood, Psychopathy Red” before finishing up with “South Of Heaven” (which sounded really fantastic before paying tribute to Hanneman for “Angel Of Death” with a backdrop dedicated to him on display. Even though Slayer at this point of their career it’s more about their business and keeping it going, it doesn’t stop them from giving a performance for their insane fans.

    Overall a fantastic show, personally I thought Suicidal Tendencies owned the show, but obviously the crowd was there for their lords and saviors Slayer. I would imagine all three bands will be back in Albany sooner or later.

  • Black Crown Initiate and Rivers of Nihil set to bring explosive energy to Bogies in Albany

    No stranger to bringing quality music to the area, Bogies in Albany is at it again on Sunday, September 21st. A co-headlining onslaught of heavy music in Rivers of Nihil and Black Crown Initiate, with some great local openers to round out the bill.

    Forest of Remorse is a newly reformed project from Lyme, NY. Promising heavy riffs and brutal slam beats, it will be one of those rare times to see a show with a budding band, that could surprise you and blow up in the near future. King Pariah from Argyle, NY is another up and coming metal band, who have already shared the stage with some big names. They helped open the Summer Slaughter tour at The Palladium in Worcester, MA with Morbid Angel and Dying Fetus.

    Troy locals The Final Sleep are playing just in their backyard and bring a progressive metal edge to the stage, and have just welcomed their new drummer, Mike VanDyne of Arsis. With a technical barrage of three guitars, this is an act not to be missed. Black Crown Initiate is just about to release their brand new record, The Wreckage of Stars, dropping September 30th. So you can expect them to bring all of their intricate epic metal to this show in support of that record. Making waves in the metal scene as of late, these guys might not be playing small clubs like Bogies for too much longer. Check out my review of their new album here.

    Rivers of Nihil also comes from Reading, PA like Black Crown Initiate, and they also have a new record, The Conscious Seed of Light. After signing with Metal Blade Records in 2013, this is their debut album on that label, after a few years of hard work and relentless touring. The double bill of these two bands will be an incredible sight to see and an awesome show to hear. For any fan of death metal, hard, fast and heavy metal, this show is one of the few that has it all and is making it’s stop in Upstate NY.

  • Times Union Center in Albany gets ready to host Five Finger Death Punch, Volbeat, Hellyeah and Nothing More

    This fall marks one of the most sought after tours in recent memory. The incredible co-lining onslaught of Five Finger Death Punch and Volbeat has been an idea in the works for some time, with both bands finally hitting the road together after countless scheduling issues, stopping in Albany. The timing could not be better, as both bands are the premier heavy metal bands on mainstream rock radio.

    Joining them on tour will be Nothing More, the fast rising heavy groove metal project out of San Antonio, Texas. Chipping away at the game with their relentless barrage of work they finally have broken out with their single, “This is the Time(Ballast)” hitting #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart in 2014. As they self proclaim with the inherent question, “Nothing more?”, they immediately answer back, “Accept nothing less.”

    Hellyeah have recently dropped their most defining album to date. Blood for Blood allows the average listener to really get the best interpretation of this ‘supergroup’, and gives the die hard fan a new outlook on this incredible band. Made up of seasoned veterans of the stage Chad Gray (Mudvane), Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan), Tom Maxwell (Nothingface) and Kyle Saunders (Bloodsimple), they are poised to bring the hard hitting heavy rock to this tour.

    Hailing from Denmark, Volbeat is no stranger to the United States. The three-piece continues to tear up stages all over the world, and are primed and ready to co-headline this tour in support of their most recent album, Outlaw Gentlemen and Shady Ladies. Epic riffs and catchy melodies make each show an experience, and with new second guitarist Rob Caggiano (Anthrax) will have the entire crowd banging their heads and singing along.

    Five Finger Death Punch (5FDP) has been wanting to do this tour for sometime, and scheduling has always gotten in the way, as is the case with hard working bands that tour constantly. But the planets aligned and this tour can finally be a reality. 5FPD are riding high off their two releases last year, The Wrong Side of Heaven and The Righteous Side of Hell, parts 1 and 2. The combined sales of those records made the band the highest selling rock band in America. Their live show is one of pure intesity and heavy metal chaos, and one not to be missed when it rolls into the OnCenter War Memorial Arena in Syracuse NY on Setptember 23rd.  Then, on September 27th, the tour will hit the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. This, like so many other amazing shows in the Albany area, is being brought to this area thanks to the tireless efforts of Step Up Presents.

  • Brooklyn and Albany combine as The End Men kick off their tour at The Low Beat

    Thursday, September 11th, the rock will invade Albany at The Low Beat. From the ashes of Valentines, this new venue over on Central Avenue has risen, and has already brought some great live acts to the area. This night aims to be no different, as some locals and some out of town bands will help send off The End Men on their two week tour of america.

    Henry’s Rifle, straight out of Albany, will bring his one man, dirty rocking banjo music to the stage. Fresh of of the Muddy Roots festival in Tennessee, and poised to drop his brand new album, “Barroom Weather” very soon, his rackus, infectious sounds will surely brighten your day and get you ready for the night.

    Sun Voyager, out of Orange County New York, will be slinging psychedelic garage rock licks at the audience in full helpings. Usually hitting the Brooklyn scene, it will be a treat to see them in Albany, alongside such luminaries of local rock and roll. They are part of King Pizza Records, and definitely check out their Bandcamp if you haven’t already.

    Charmboy, another Albany based band,  are a product of the no nonsense rock and roll of the 70’s and they are proud to produce guitar laden rock without gimmick or pretense. Tight riffs and tasty jams will feed the hole in your soul where rock and roll lives. They will be sure to do what they do best; melt faces and hearts alike with their pure inspiring music.

    The End Men, from Brooklyn New York, definitely call Albany their home away from home at this point. Joining up with the fine collective of  musical folks at Built4BBQ, they have made the pilgrimage upstate a number of times to great crowd response. The two piece, though rumoured to be rounded out by a mysterious saxaphone player for this tour, bring an incredibly huge sound with them wherever they set up shop. They have been tearing up stages in America as well as Europe for over four years now, and they show no signs of taking a break. Each time they come to this area they try out new material, engage the crowd on and off the stage, and make for an immersive experience full of their own brand of psycho dirty blues laden rock and roll.

  • Municipal Waste and Madball Set to Play Bogie’s

    Thrash metal outfit Municipal Waste and New York City veteran hardcore group Madball are playing Bogies in Albany tonight in attempt to make a decent draw to potentially save the business, or at least, keep the steady stream of heavy shows coming to the venue.

    Upstate Black N Blue, owned by Mike Valente, released the following statement yesterday on their Facebook page.

    “Here’s the deal. If you care about hardcore and metal, come out tomorrow night (Thursday) to Bogies for MADBALL AND MUNICIPAL WASTE. This is a big tour. It shouldn’t draw less than 400 people in any city. But if we get less than 200 people tomorrow it shows a steady downward trend in attendance and bogies will have to make a decision about whether we can continue to taking a beating and lose money trying to stay open and provide a home to countless bands and people for underground music. So if you want. Bogies to stay open and you like hardcore and metal you better be there on Thursday (Aug 7)”

    Municipal Waste’s latest release The Fatal Feast was released back in 2012 and has been steadily touring in support of that album ever since. Madball’s latest release Hardcore Lives was released just last month.

    Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are only $18 at the door. Honestly, this show should be insane. Metal and hardcore fans need to get off their couches for this show and not only support two phenomenal bands, but help save a venue that has done so much for heavy music in the Capital Region.

  • Dark Star Orchestra will be all over New York State this Fall

    Dark Star Orchestra will be coming back to New York this fall with a tour that will let you dance throughout the state this November. The tour will see the Grateful Dead Tribute act start in Buffalo’s The Town Ballroom on November 12. This will be followed closely with stops at the Reg Lenna Civic Center in Jamestown and the Palace Theatre in Albany on the 14 and 15 respectively. Prior to two nights at Higher Ground on the 24 and 25, the tour will stop at The State Theatre of Ithaca on the 17 and the Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie on November 20.

    dark star orchestra FallFollowing Thanksgiving, DSO will be playing New York City’s Best Buy Theatre for a two night stand on the 28th and 29th. The New York portion of the tour wraps up on December 1st at Syracuse’s Palace Theatre. Tickets for these shows go on sale this coming week. All the dates are below.

  • Consider The Source Overloads The Hollow With Sonic Delight

    “You’re the best trio in the history of music!” a zealous fan shouted between songs during Consider the Source‘s heavy rock set on Friday, July 25. Some whoops of agreement went up from the crowd of approximately 200 at The Hollow, a bar/concert venue on Pearl Street in Albany.  No one disputed the claim.

    CTS took the stage after Ampevene, a young local quartet, who showed that the future of rock is in able hands.  They opened the night with a jazzy set of originals and a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Have A Cigar”.  Ampevene played for nearly an hour before Consider the Source came on around 11, looking sharp in their white business linens. The crowd, which was energetic all night, moved up and in to get a better look at the Sourcerors in action.

    Marin slid his fingers gracefully up and down the top neck of his fretless guitar.  Jeff Mann started the night with a pair of mallets rolling on the drums and John Ferrara—the Ferrari of bassists—came out slapping his 5-string.  The trio showed their versatility immediately with a section of hard rock that became a Middle Eastern tango for three of four measures, then Mann’s double-bass drumming kicked the jam into metal before they transitioned back to jazz.  Ferrara, semi-crouched, smiling, and slapping, faced Marin and the two dueled it out for the last-minute of the tune.

    During “Abdiel”, Marin flipped a switch on his custom double-necked guitar and was suddenly playing a velvety trumpet solo. When he gave his fingertips a moment to cool off, Mann and Ferrara went back and forth, trading drum and bass solos respectively.  Throughout the set, Marin manipulated trumpet, flute, banjo, and oboe-esque notes from his  axe.  The twenty-foot ceilings in The Hollow created great acoustics for Marin and company to jam in.

    CTS blends a myriad of genres and influences into elegantly composed songs with unique movements and stanzas.  The show in Albany was an epic instrumental journey, featuring the stunt guitar, bone-rattling bass, and Mann doing his best Animal impression on the drums.  The set played out more like a unified rock opera than a dozen individual songs.  “__/” (the title is a hand symbol), began with Ferrara soloing and cradling his bass like a baby, as his left hand flew up and down the neck and his right hand alternated between tapping and slapping.  Marin and Mann joined in, as the jam had a pure rock feel to it and a grandiosity reminiscent of Umphrey’s McGee’s “All In Time”.  While most of the ride was dark and spacey like “__/”, “Tihai For The Straight Guy” was a warm reprieve in the middle of the set.

    “We’ve been all over the world,” Ferrara said at one point, “but we are right where we want to be tonight! You guys have so much energy!”

    The front half of the venue was packed with wide-eyed and slack-jawed enthusiasts squished in to get a close-up view.  When not induced into dancing, listeners stood on tip-toes trying to get a better look at the Sourcerors operating their instruments with surgical precision.

    Toward the end of the set, Marin showed his mean streak during “I’ll Fight For The Imp”.  He played with an apparently disgruntled attitude, punishing his guitar for unknown crimes.  Most of the night, however, he looked like a violin savant fitting of the name Gabriel, fingering his custom guitar with deliberate movements of massive fingers.  He shredded with a cool, calm composure, making intricate solos appear effortless.  While he may be the most eloquent guitar player on the rock circuit, he may not even be the best string player in the band.  Imagine the ’90s Bulls.  Now, imagine them with LeBron on the team, too.  You can debate either way which of Marin and  Ferrara are Michael and LeBron.  Mann—who reminded the crowd during the encore, “it’s Friday night; I want you to push that fuckin’ rock button!”—is unarguably Pippen, valiantly rocking the most under-appreciable position in music.

    During the encore, the Sourcerors each showed their prowess one last time.  Mann busted out his electric drum pad and Ferrara played a solo that incorporated classical plucking and heavy womping.  Marin jettisoned his hat and, with his long golden hair flowing free, pumped out spacey laser sounds.  The Hollow was rocking as Consider the Source proved that rock is far from dead.

  • Primus Awards GOLDEN TICKET to Albany, NYC and Rochester

    Oompa Loompa Doopity Doo, has an announcement for you! Primus has announced their fall tour which includes Golden Ticket dates in Albany (10/24), New York City (10/31) and Rochester (11/02).

    Alongside the tour Les and friends will release their 8th studio album, aptly named “Primus and the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble“. The announcement also came with a first listen of the debut single “Pure Imagination”. These are sure to be hot golden tickets, don’t delay!
