  • Crowbar, Unearth, Blow The Roof Off Bogies In Albany Last Wednesday

Bogies of Albany brings Upstate New York some of the heaviest shows, continued the tradition by bringing in New Orleans sludge metal icons Crowbar, with support from Massachusetts’ Unearth, up and coming Black Crown Initiate, plus local bands Gunther Weezul and 40 Dead Men.

The place was packed, despite the heavy snowstorm that swept through the entire state of New York that night. Proof that great metal bands will still draw a crowd, no matter what. This marks the first time I have been to a show at Bogies. I will say I plan on coming back to more. Great venue, great sound, with an awesome bar and very intimate. Just sucks there’s no place to park. Very similar to the Montage Music Hall in Rochester.

    Jay With Krik

Unfortunately for me, since I was driving from Syracuse in the loveliest of weather, I missed the local openers but made it on time for Black Crown Initiate, an appropriate band to tour with Crowbar with very heavy prog metal. Black Crown Intimate seemed to be very liked by the younger crowd. It was the perfect band to headbang to. Vocalist James Dorton, guitarists Andy Thomas and Nick Shaw all split vocal duties but they make it work on stage appropriately. Incredibly heavy and talented band.

Once Unearth got on stage, that’s when the crowd erupted and the mosh pits opened up and few bodies flew across the top of the crowd. They were by far the fastest band of the night. Frontman Trevor Phipps was all over the stage and the band was really clutch. Not really the kind of band you would expect to tour with Crowbar because it’s a different kind of metal but it was still very enjoyable.

Crowbar finally graced the stage and proved that there’s NONE FUCKING HEAVIER. It was an absolute treat to finally hear some slow, heavy, ugly, sludge metal to make my ears bleed live for the first time in my life. To hear those down-tuned guitars and the deep and scary vocals from Guitarist/Vocalist Kirk Windstein was just surreal. The current lineup for Crowbar is rounded off by Tommy Buckley on drums, Matthew Brunson on guitars, and newcomer Jeff Golden on bass, former bassist Pat Bruders wound up staying with Down last year. Their set couldn’t have started with a better song as they opened with “Cemetery Angels.” To hear the breakdown at the end with Kirk screaming “BRING IT DOWWWWWN!!!!!!” you know shit got real. The crowd went bananas just throwing their fist, stomping their feet and banging their heads.

The band kept the momentum rolling by playing some new tracks with ”Walk With Knowledge Wisely” and “Symmetry In White.” Some other great highlights of the show were the classics like “Self Inflicted,” “Conquering,” “High Rate Extinction,” and “All I Had (I Gave).” Crowbar went through their set relatively quick only taking a few breaks. With no encore the band closed off the night with the popular “Planets Collide” and the classic from their first album Vacuum.

Overall a great show, but Crowbar was boss. This is the rawest, purest form of sludge metal you will ever get. Anyone who missed this show should be kicking themselves in the head because Crowbar rarely tours through upstate New York. I had the pleasure of speaking to Kirk Windstein before their set. Let me just say he was a gentlemen. He hung out with people after the show as well. I got the chance to talk to him about the new album and some of his future plans. Windstein confirmed there will be another Kingdom Of Sorrow album. Until then, it’s all about Crowbar. And we should all be embracing it.

Brotherly Love Productions released the following statement:

It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce that 2015 will mark the final year of the Catskill Chill’s glorious run at Camp Minglewood,” said festival founder Dave Marzollo. “We would keep our event at it’s original home forever if we could, but we have been informed that, for reasons beyond our control, we will no longer be able to host our family at the place we’ve come to love. The bright side is that we have one final chance to enjoy those rolling slopes of our intimate campus for one last mighty celebration – The Sixth Annual Catskill Chill Music Festival:  A Farewell to Minglewood!  Whether you have been to every Chill, or you have always wanted to go but never made it, this will be an epic Chill chapter that you will not want to miss.

Yes, the Chill will continue after this year, and we already have a few amazing prospective new facilities to choose from, but for now let’s focus on a weekend we’ll remember forever.  It will be an incredible going away party – one last chance to put our arms around each other and sing our favorite lyrics in that musical sanctuary that’s become such a special part of our lives.”

  • Sully Erna at Riviera Theatre

On December 4, 2014, Riveria Theatre was treated to a spectacular and moving performance by vocalist/songwriter, Sully Erna, best known for his role as Godsmack’s frontman. Sully played to a nearly sold out crowd and was accompanied by lead guitarist Tim Therault, bassist Chris Lester and drummer David Stefanelli.
    DSC_0802-2
Erna delivered a powerful performance with tracks such as, “Departed” and a rendition of “No Excuses” by Alice In Chains. And later in the set, Sully discussed his personal views on music. He talked about how the best music comes from the worst pain and dedicated his song, “Hollow” an original Godsmack song, to all the great musicians who had died at a young age or were considered legends. His memorial included homages to John Lennon, Dimebag Darrell, Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious, Randy Rhodes, Johnny Cash, Kurt Cobain, and of course, Layne Staley.

Afterwards, Sully played his song, “My Light” which was a tribute to his daughter. A large backdrop screen streamed images of her growing up. Then, after that riveting and emotional display of love and affection, he dedicated a song called “Until Then” to the soldiers who have fought and are still fighting for our country. By this time, the Riveria was giving off a somber vibe, and a man several seats down from me took off his hat and put it over his heart. You could see the tears in his eyes as he sang along with Sully.

Later on, Sully discussed his views on music again for about ten minutes. He commented that music is nothing but sound waves played in different orders and how the simple plucks of a chord can trigger the deepest of emotions within the listener.

The show ended with Sully singing “Dream On” and getting the audience involved. Most of the crowd rushed to the stage to help him close out the night. All in all, he put on an amazing performance and will always be welcome back to Buffalo with open arms.

  • The Yusuf/Cat Stevens Peace Train Pulls Into Boston

A frigid and blustery Boston night was braved by a sold out crowd, many who had waited 38 years for Cat Stevens‘ (now known as Yusuf) return to the performing stage. In support of his 2014 studio LP Tell Em I’m Gone, Yusuf is currently playing a limited number of engagements across the US. His second appearance of six dates in the states took place in Boston on Dec. 7, exceeding any and all expectations for the talented and sometimes controversial artist.

    Peace Train

The intimate and ornate Wang Theatre was the setting for a two-set, 105 minute performance composed of Steven’s most beloved classics as well as samples of Yusuf’s contemporary dusty desert blues compositions. The tour moniker, Peace Train…Late Again was reflected in the stage set, which was constructed of a broken down train station that changed mood and vibe based on the song performed.

The concert illustrated the elder Yusuf as an artist willing to reveal and explore all aspects of the Cat Stevens catalog that made him famous, in addition to the expanding song list of current Yusuf compositions. The first hour-long set of the concert settled into mellow dual acoustic guitar groove opening with ‘The Wind’, the same number that opened Cat Steven’s last US tour in 1976. Similarly to 1976, long time Yusuf friend and musical colleague Alun Davies was included on acoustic guitar. In addition to Davies, Yusuf was joined by keyboardist Pete Adams, bassist Stefan Fuhr, Drummer Kwame Yeboah and additional guitarists Matt Sweeney who sat in on tracks from the new LP and Eric Appopoulay.

The first half of the concert drifted between familiarity and discovery with Cat Stevens classic tracks and deep cuts intermingled with Yusuf’s poignant new material. Regardless of the composition, the songs and stories are all developed from the same earth spring of inspiration, the musical and spiritual journey of Cat Stevens. Yusuf reclaimed his early hit ‘The First Cut Is the Deepest’ for his own in a sing along performance featured early in the show. Highlights of the opening set included a rousing reading of Catch Bull at Four’s ‘Sitting’ that rivaled the original reading, a rare and floral ‘All Kinds of Roses’ off of 2009’s Roadsinger and an always relevant reading of ‘Where Do the Children Play’ that received rapturous applause and soulful accompaniment from the crowd.

Yusuf’s voice was a perfectly preserved specimen for the duration of the evening. It’s strength somewhat diminished by time, but its resonance and emotion deepening with every performance. A deft pairing of the old and the new displaying this current vocal approach found Cat Stevens first single ‘I Love My Dog’ given a jazzy reading before followed with 2014’s ‘Cat and the Dog Trap’, in my opinion the most beautiful song both lyrically and instrumentally on the new LP.

The opening set then closed with a collaborative ‘If You Want To Sing Out’ from the 1971 Harold and Maude soundtrack that left the crowd smiling and highly anticipating the second set.

The second set began dark and the train station turned twilight and dim. The Peace Train was drawing near, the band was armed with electric instruments and break into a funky and strident cover of ‘Big Boss Man’ that enunciated the tastefulness and collaborative interest displayed by Yusuf’s touring band.

Yusuf then introduced ‘Eddie Vedder’s favorite song’ before playing an intimate and definitive version of ‘Trouble” off of 1970’s Mona Bone Jakon, an inspired choice. ‘Oh Very Young’ followed and received a standing ovation after a flawless rendition illustrating Yusuf’s acceptance of his Cat Stevens legacy as well as the joy it brings him by playing the music. The set now revealed the big songs, the songs that cemented Yusuf’s career then and now. ‘Moonshadow’ was played by the full band in a triumphant arrangement, ‘Wild World,’ ‘Father and Son’ and the long-awaited ‘Peace Train’ were played with infectious joy and virtuosity. Intermingled with these well-known and sought after classics were the impressive tracks off of the new LP including a soaring reading of Edgar Winter’s ‘Dying to Live’ and the gritty ‘Editing Floor Blues’.

The second half of the performance gave everyone exactly what they had come to see, whether a child of the 60’s, an aging hippy, or a recent passenger on the ‘Peace Train’, there was a song or a message for everyone. Each of the Cat Stevens songs performed felt fresh, their arrangements rediscovered, their melodic nuances fully explored. A celebratory reunion of an artist with his long-lost musical children was taking place on the performing stage.

The hardcore Cat fans were sated throughout the set, first when Yusuf amazingly quoted multiple movements from the 1973 opus ‘The Foreigner Suite’ and then again with the encore choice of ‘Sad Lisa’ which brought the house down in its unique spot as a closing encore number. The set first concluded with the aforementioned Cat Stevens signature readings of ‘Peace Train’ and ‘Father and Son’, songs that defined an era as well as inspiring the beliefs and relationships that developed during the two songs popularity.

Then for the encore Yusuf and band returned with a welcome appearance of ‘Miles from Nowhere’ which made for a Tea for the Tillerman double encore when followed by the spooky beautiful piano based ‘Sad Lisa’. Again, Yusuf sang with precision and grace, offering a broad smile after a slight vocal hiccup during ‘Miles from Nowhere’. The small miscue illustrated a fantastic moment, revealing Yusuf’s new musical joy, and his sincere appreciation for his fans and followers who had waited so long to see him again.

We can only hope that the success and musical developments that have occurred on Yusuf/Cat Stevens’ recent Peace Train…Late Again tour are enough to keep him performing and creating into the near future. The performance at the Wang Center on Dec. 7, 2014 was worth the wait, it offered inspired lyrical stories, instrumental magic and a message of peace by an artist who has rediscovered his place in the world of popular music.
