  • Judas Priest and Steel Panther Announce Tour, Will Play Main Street Armory in Rochester and Barclays Center in Brooklyn

    The metal gods Judas Priest, who embarked on what was thought to be their final tour the previous two years have decided that there is no rest for the wicked and announced a U.S. run with glam metal jokers Steel Panther this fall, with the very first stop at the Main Street Armory in Rochester on Wednesday, October 1 as well as a stop in Brooklyn.  The tour is set as follows:

    Judas Priest are set to release their 17th album Redeemer of Souls on July 8 via Epic Records.  Frontman Rob Halford recently trademarked the term “metal  god” because he wants no one else to ever be known as a “metal god” other than him.  Steel Panther will be supporting last year’s studio effort All You Can Eat.

  • Jazz Fest Saturday: Laughs and Music with Steve Martin & Steep Canyon Rangers

    Steve Martin is a wild and crazy guy. He is also a comedian, actor, screenwriter, author and a fantastic banjo player. All of these talents melded into one superb experience at a pair of sold out shows at the beautiful Kodak Theater at the Eastman School of Music during the second day of Xerox’s Rochester International Jazz Fest this past Saturday.

    Along with the multi-talented backing band Steep Canyon Rangers – from Brevard, North Carolina – and fellow Grammy winner Edie Brickell, Martin kept the capacity crowd riveted. Featuring fantastic original music peppered with comedic and interactive banter, the 90 minute show left no one feeling slighted.

    The show bounced between original songs with a healthy dose of joking in between. The Rangers seemed especially apropos for this part as they engaged in as many belly laughing experiences as the comedic legend did. About halfway through, Brickell took the stage and commanded the crowd’s attention with beautiful vocals that have not skipped a beat from her younger years. She stayed for a few songs including Steve and Edie’s 2014 Grammy award-winning track “Love Has Come For You” and “When You Get To Asheville”.

    A celebration was to be in order this night as well, as it was the bands 5th year anniversary of their first performance. Steve jokingly offered his band members a “free copy” of the 1991 movie, Father of the Bride, as an anniversary present.  Martin even managed to keep the humor local, joking that he was “glad to be where the Botox is fresh.”

  • Vijay Iyer at Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival

    Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer (pronounced “VID-jay EYE-yer”) was described by Pitchfork as “one of the most interesting and vital young pianists in jazz today,” – March 2014 marks the release of Mutations, Iyer’s eighteenth album and his debut for the prestigious ECM label: a recording for piano, string quartet and electronics, the first album to document his works for chamber ensembles.

    Vijay Iyer’s previous release, Holding It Down: The Veterans’ Dreams Project (2013), is his third collaboration with poet Mike Ladd, based on the dreams of veterans of color from America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was hailed as #1 Jazz Album of the Year by the Los Angeles Times and described in JazzTimes as “impassioned, haunting, [and] affecting.” –

  • Free Soulive Show at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival

    SLV_0235Supergroups in music usually consist of members who are individually famous for their prior work with another band. If Soulive were to form today, you could say that they would be a funk supergroup, snatching up members from some of the top bands in the scene. That’s not the case though as this is a band that has been around since the late ’90s and is in the opposite position – they were one of the bands who laid the groundwork for funk’s recent resurgence and the groups leading that push today. The trio consists of Alan Evans on drums, Neal Evans on organ/bass keys, and Eric Krasno on guitar.

    At one point the band had been a touring force, even opening for the Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews. Their instrumental combination of funk, jazz, soul, and rock was enlivening and people were taking notice. With each of these guys though, keeping the pedal to the floor and constantly being involved in the scene has led to other projects and ventures. Neal and Eric are touring to a greater capacity with Lettuce, Eric splits that with contributing in the studio and occasionally touring with Tedeschi Trucks Band, while Alan has Playonbrother who have been making a name for themselves as of late. Alan also owns his own studio and regularly produces records for various bands. The net of it is that Soulive performances are now a rarity and shouldn’t be squandered. Given the fact that their shows don’t happen often, with the talent these guys possess, anytime they do get together, it’s usually a magical performance replete with inspiring moments of musical mastery. This Saturday, Rochester is in for a treat as Soulive is set to perform at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. If my words aren’t a big enough nudge, the show is free and is the only local tour date for the band besides a late August date in Turin when they appear at moe.down. The show kicks off at 9pm at the East Ave. & Alexander St. Stage and is one Jazz Fest act you don’t want to miss.

  • Rochester Jazz Festival 2014 Opens to a Huge Success: Friday Night Photo Gallery

    The 2014 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival kicked off on Friday with large crowds and packed houses. The sites and sounds of Jazz Fest seem to improve from year to year. With free stages offering music in the streets, festival goers also had their choice of local restaurant food vendors, to locally famous food trucks like Cheesed and Confused. No matter what you taste is, it’s sure to be satisfied by this festival.

    Headliner Janelle Moane belted out tunes to he delight of a packed Kodak Theatre. Her unique brand of pop-jazz was a delight. She embodies what a female jazz artist strives to be, while offering up her style and stage presence. For her encore she invited members of the audience to join her on stage.

    Whether you saw any of the free shows or purchased tickets to one of the headliners at the Kodak Theatre, if you attended this weekends festivities you surely had your fix of live music.

  • Water Street Music Hall Welcomes Dan Smalls as the new Talent Provider for the Venue

    h2o streetWater Street Music Hall, which first opened its doors as the Country Warehouse in 1977, has gone through many changes over the years – owners have come and gone just as the name has changed from earlier years. Recently there was a change in the owners of the historical Rochester venue and they were unable to serve alcohol for some time, which led to several shows being moved to different venues within the city. Water Street Music Hall announced yesterday, the addition of Dan Smalls of Dan Smalls Presents, as the newest member of the Water Street family. Smalls will now be the exclusive talent buyer for the venue.

    Currently the exclusive talent buyer for the State Theatre in Ithaca, the summer concert series at Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, and the prestigious Event Gallery in the Woodstock Museum at the Bethel Woods Center for the Performing Arts, Dan joins Water Street with more than two decades in the entertainment business.  This new addition  completes our team in providing a diverse lineup and a variety of genres.

    Anthony Marsocci, owner of Water Street said, “Dan is the consummate talent buyer, he is smart, dedicated and one of the most down to earth persons I have ever met.  We feel fortunate that Dan has joined our team and shares our vision of creating a memorable experience for both the artist and fan. Tickets are sold out for both shows of Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell and for Earth, Wind and Fire.  – Buy tickets online at rochesterjazz.com, at the door if not sold out, or at the Ticket Shop, 100 East Ave and Gibbs St., 10AM – 11PM daily during the festival, 585-454-2062

    Club Pass Shows: Exchange Club Pass tickets for Passes before getting in line to attend any show at the Festival Ticket Shop – Corner of East Ave & Gibbs St., the Kiosk at the Corner of Gibbs Street and Main St. (4PM – 10PM) or the Merchandise Tent on Gibbs Street (4PM – 11PM). Tickets cannot be exchanged for passes at venues. Admission to Club Pass shows is with the Club Pass or $20/ $25 Kilbourn Hall, cash only at the door, no advance sales for individual club pass shows. First-come, first-served for everyone!

  • Rochester’s Party in the Park 2014: June in Detail

    Rochester’s annual Party in the Park weekly concert series begins next week, June 19, 2014. All shows will be held at the original P.I.T.P. location Martin Luther King Jr. Park – formerly known as Manhattan Square park – at the corner of Court and Chestnut streets downtown. All shows are 5$ (Children 12 and under are free), or 35$ for a party pack that offers entrance to all 9 shows (a 10$ savings) and an express entry line.WAILERS

    Ticket’s may be purchased at the gate, the Blue Cross Arena box office, or via Ticketmaster (w/ additional service charges). Space is limited so make sure to show up early or pre-purchase to guarantee entry. Food will be available from several of the area’s top food trucks and drinks will be supplied by local breweries Rohrbach’s and Genesee.

    Party-goers should know that while blankets are allowed, lawn chairs are not, and everyone may bring in one sealed bottle of water. Parking is available at several local garages, or for a 7$ charge you can park conveniently a half block away at The Strong Museum of Play. All shows run from 5-10PM and will also include buskers throughout the venue and local talent on a side stage.

    June kicks things off on the 19th with The Wailers. Originally fronted by the legendary Bob Marley, nowadays original members of his group have split into two sets of Wailers. Rochester music fans will recognize that the Original Wailers closed out the annual Lilac festival, so it seems fitting that the other crew kicks the P.I.T.P. season off. Fear not, as both sets of Wailers include original members. Providing support will be Rochester’s Noble Vibes and Trinidad & Tobago Steel Band.

    The June fun continues on the 26th with the folk-country-americana of Lucinda Williams. As a 35+ year veteran of the music scene, Lucinda has a deep and celebrated catalog and is widely regarded by her peers as one of the few remaining true old school country elements within the pop-befuddled modern scene. Providing support will be the outlaw country rock outfit The Kenneth Brian Band.

    After the “honky-tonking” is complete, night owls can continue their night of music enjoying the Rochester International Jazz Festival with several venues offering late night shows.  A half block away at The Montage Music Hall – which will have after party’s throughout July and August as well – will be The Ivan Jansen Aruba Jazz Project. Other options to close out the evening are The Hypnotic Jazz Ensemble at the corner of East and Gibbs, or, if some screaming blues guitar is your thing, 29-year-old prodigy Selwyn Birchwood will be at Abilene.
