  • Hearing Aide: LYON ‘Onyx’

Daniel Lyon, drummer from Ithaca’s electronic trio SOLARiS, has released his first solo album Onyx under the name LYON. The album is under an hour with a range of 11 ambient tracks, an easy listen that is ideal for relaxing at home or in the car on a road trip. LYON is a drummer who literally steams during live performances with hard hitting beats and a dark rhythmic sound with focused energy. His solo work is no different, showcasing detailed and digital emotions that we can all relate to. His new album is available for free download and streaming via Bandcamp. You can catch LYON in action with his SOLARiS band mates at The Beagle Pub in Johnson City on the 21st of March and The Other Side in Wilkes-Barre, PA on the 22nd. SOLARiS will also be performing at one of Upstate NY’s newest Festivals, Rock n Roll Resort, in Kerhonksen, NY with tickets and rooms still available.

The album starts with the roar of “Animal”, a simple beat that eases you into the album with gentle echoes and light funk vibe. “Without Her” begins with beautifully sorrowful strings before it mixes with a techno melody combining a modern yet vintage twist on lost love. “Meridian” contained limitless echoes of all tones with a quick pace making for an easy groove. “Onyx” features SOLARiS keyboardist Jared Raphael, adding a futuristic funk with disco that was captivating and “The Overlook” with a groovy bass line with jazzy flair. “Small Beginnings” is the perfect ending to the album, the upbeat melody that has a great build up throughout the song, giving a taste of what’s to come with LYON’s solo work.

  • Bobaflex with Tantric at Bogie’s

Named after the iconic bounty hunter from the original Star Wars arch, Bobaflex and the music it plays is just as keenly adept to bad-assery.

Those familiar with George Lucas’ mythology are also aware of the lack of respect bestowed upon the anti-hero, Boba Fett.  That lack of respect, is an unfortunate fate also familiar to the band. The introduction to their latest release, Charlatan’s Way, is a dramatization of an actual voice message the band received several years ago from an agent.

“You know out West, they have a name for your kind: Working Class Trash. You don’t come from shit.  You ain’t never gonna be shit…  You think because cause you pissed in Gatorade bottles, lived off the Dollar Menu and played the dirt circuit, that it’s your time?  Heh. It’s over. It never began. An intelligent person would just give up!”

Bassist Jerod Mankin said, the monologue is taken “pretty much at verbatim.”

Mankin was not asked to reveal a name, as he said, it’s not worth dwelling on the negative. Today, married and still touring, he considers himself successful. “If you can say you are happy and personally satisfied, I consider that a success.”.

On Thursday, March 20th, this five-piece nu-metal band out of West Virginia travels well north of the Mason-Dixon line to share a playbill with Tantric at Bogie’s in Albany, and venture off to Syracuse to play Monirae’s the following night.

The band has a reputation for relentlessly touring throughout a career that has spanned for the better part of two decades.  Hitting the road gets the needed face time with fans.  And, while on stage, they are one of the liveliest performers in music.

They are currently on a promotional tour that has included more than 100 stops.  Charlatan’s Way, their sixth studio album, was released last September. The first single, “Bad Man,” charted at No. 33 on the Active Rock Radio charts in the United States and has since been followed by “I’m Glad Your Dead.”

Bobaflex advertises as a Nu Metal band, akin to Korn and Limp Bizkit.  But, this release comes across as good ‘ol fashion rock, complete with an edgy bass, a generous supply of drums, and racy lyrics that Mankin nearly sounds apologetic. “It’s a little bit racy for what people care,” he said. “It didn’t come out purposely, it just came out that way.”  What immediately comes to mind is the track “School for Young Ladies,” providing the description of a young woman in traditional schoolgirl outfit, and the events that surround her.

In its entirety, Charlatan’s Way is the kind of CD you throw in and don’t take out until the last few notes of “Rogue” are done playing. From beginning to end, Bobaflex announces what it is, and is unashamed about it. Machismo lyrics always have a place in Rock – it’s what I grew up on, listening to Van Halen, Motley Crue, and Warrant, and there will always be a place for it.  If that’s wrong than I don’t want to be right.

  • It’s Time for March Madness!

Welcome to March Madness! This is our first year in creating this tournament-style competition between artists and bands that originated in Upstate New York and we think with Upstate New York’s history of incredible musicians, we have the potential for an interesting style of March Madness to share with you all.

For starters, there are four regions, made up of the four parts to Upstate NY – Western NY, Central NY, Southern Tier and Eastern NY. We broke them up by Area Codes – West Region covers 716 and 585, Central Region covers all of 315, South Region includes 845 and 607, while East Region is 100% 518, stretching all the way to Canada.

We chose these bands based on their historical presence in Upstate NY, their origins in Upstate, popularity, a selection of many genres (but no cover bands, sorry), focusing on who comes to mind in each of these four regions. We ranked them based on the best known band/artist from each region, 1 through 16.

Did we miss some? Let us know! There were some bands that didn’t make the cut, and some we might have overlooked in this process.

Voting will begin on March 17th at Noon with the first round, which ends on March 20th. Round 2 will start the 21st, with more announcements as each round progresses.  Stay tuned to our Facebook page and .com for details and to see who advanced to the next round!

    – Pete Mason, Managing Editor,

A note to moe. fans – we know they started out in Buffalo and then developed a larger following while in Albany, but have had 14 (soon 15) moe.downs in 315 – we split the difference to place them there.

  • 315 Central Region: Vote in the First Round of March Madness!

Upstateology Breakdown: This might be the toughest region to come out of. You have a metal rock god in Dio, 70’s classic rockers Blue Oyster Cult and guitar god Joe Bonamassa in the top 4. moe. is 3rd and has called 315 home for moe.down since 1999. Joanne Shenandoah celebrates the Oneida Nation heritage and has won a Grammy for her singing while Martin Sexton’s songwriting and singing have made him a national touring act of great influence. Bluegrass legend Tony Trischka, Syracuse University product Ra Ra Riot and Geneva’s own Gym Class Heroes all pose serious threats with large fan bases to support these acts. A variety of sounds fill out the next few slots, with thick funk from Sophistafunk, jamgrass from Floodwood, classic 90’s jam band Dexter Grove and Los Blancos who have won many regional awards for their blues. Rapper/beatboxer Joe Driscoll and bluegrass band Birdseed Bandits round out this region that will surely be a tough one to emerge victorious from. Best of luck to the 315 bands! – Pete Mason

  • Scott Ian’s “Speaking Words” turns Family Affair

Anthrax guitarist and founder Scott Ian stopped at Syracuse’s Lost Horizon for his “Speaking Words” tour and delivered an insightful, intimate, and amusing show in front about 100 people.

Ian, who is in the tail end of the “Speaking Words” Tour, is also in the middle of working on Anthrax’s 11th studio album (slated for a later 2014 release), and said to be wrapping up his autobiography that’s due out next year.

There was speculation whether or not Joey Belladonna was going to make an appearance, he did not.

Doors opened at 7, the show actually started about 8:10,  It was a small-scale production show.   It was just Scott Ian with a projection screen that showed some amusing comic slides, that show cased his stories in amusing manner. Of course as expected, a few drunk and obnoxious people in the crowd, Ian gracefully told them to, “shut the fuck up” more than once.

Ian opens his set by throwing the crowd off by reading from Red Hot Chilli Pepper‘s frontman, Anthony Keidis’ autobiography.  Then as expected he chatted about his upbringing, to starting the band, to getting signed by Def Jam Records.  Then he shifted gears and spoke about how he first met Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, sharing all the goods of his relationship with Lemmy, and the times he thought he could keep up drinking with him.  The crowd could not stop laughing. Ian is a great story-teller.  The comic slides just made it more amusing.  Then after what was about 45 minutes of sharing crazy Lemmy Stories, the crowd was blessed to hear some funny party and prank stories that Ian shared with the late and great Dimebag Darrell.

Towards the end of the show Ian did a Q & A session with the crowd. (Yes, I got my question in about Damnocracy from the VH1 show “Supergroup”) This ultimately led to what may be the craziest incident of any concert.

A man, bald and sporting a goatee, emerged from the crowd and accused Ian of being his biological father.  It was apparent that Ian recognized the man, who claimed to be 30-years-old, as before the mystery man spoke Ian immediately yelled, “Dude, I am not your father.”

The man continued to tell the story shared to him by his mother that she allegedly had relations with Ian in New York City more than 30 years ago.

“Dude, your mom’s a fucking liar,” said Ian. “Sorry, man.”

The man was escorted out by security, apparently crying and Ian swiftly deflected the situation from being a further distraction to the show.  It was, however,  definitely the highlight of the show, or in that case the highlight of the entire “Speaking Words” Tour.   The show almost felt like a metal version of an episode of Maury.   Talk about something that people don’t normally see every day.

(I did speak to Ian after the show, and he said he had no doubt in his mind that the story behind the man’s claims was fake.)

Once the theatrics concluded, the Q & A session resumed.  There were some questions apparently inspired by alcohol and foolishness, but there were some great questions from the crowd including too.  One man asked Ian about the times he spent with the late, and great, Ronnie James Dio (who was also receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAMMY’s).

The show finally ended around 10:30.  Ian did do a VIP meet and greet after the show, doing autographs, and sharing more stories.   I chatted with Ian about the Yankees and cool Anthrax experiences, also there is the possibility of doing another Spoken Word Tour that will include Fozzy Frontman/WWE Superstar Chris Jericho.  They did a tour together in Australia last year and it was very successful.

Overall, it was great show for anyone that is into Anthrax, or Heavy Metal in general.  And, of course, Scott Ian tells great stories that will guarantee you a nice chuckle and some stories to tell all your friends and family.  Hopefully he brings the Speaking Words show back to Syracuse, as well as a full-blown Anthrax show as well.

  • Photo Gallery: 3 Doors Down Unplugged at Turning Stone’s Event Center

After nearly 20 years of being plugged in, Mississippi rockers 3 Doors Down decided to go unplugged and get back in touch with their roots.  Setting up the stage similar to a basement and going nearly acoustic, 3 Doors Down has taken their stripped down version on the road delighting fans across the country.  Their stop in Verona, New York at Turning Stone Casino was no exception.  A packed house of over 1000 fans came out to see the band perform their hits and a couple of very well received covers.  The boys from Mississippi got their country on when they played Garth Brook’s classic, “The Dance”.  However, this metal head appreciated their take on Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” during the encore.

In light of the original bassist’s recent legal issues, the band parted ways earlier this week with Todd Harrell. Rest assured, young Justin Biltonen can hold his own.  His acoustic bass sounded good and the young women in the audience seemed to take a liking to the newest member of 3DD.

Setlist: Father’s Son, Let Me Be Myself, Be Like That, Landing in London. The Dance, When You’re Young, Let Me Go, Pages. Away From the Sun, It’s Not My Time. Duck and Run, Loser, Kryptonite

Encore: Nothing Else Matters, Here Without You, When I’m Gone
