  • Hearing Aide: Dan Johnson “Mercury 85”

a4120112466_10Despite calling Vermont home, the origins of Dan Johnson’s music career lie here in Upstate New York, where he first strummed his guitar to the public inside where Valentine’s Music Hall and Beer Joint once stood. Valentine’s is gone, but Dan Johnson’s Americana sound continues today with the release of his latest, Mercury 85.  The album was released on May 27th.

Located off Albany’s New Scotland Avenue, Valentine’s was a popular venue for live music before it succumbed to a local hospital’s progressive movement to expand last year.  Johnson, along with his Expert Sidemen, had hosted his Americana music series every Tuesday night featuring the likes of Woody Pines, Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs, The Farewell Drifters, Hamell on Trial, JP Harris and the Tough Choices, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, and Eastbound Jesus.

“Most of the album is about people I’ve known,” said Johnson, “especially folks from the time I spent in Buffalo, but also moving from New York to Vermont, and life changes [too]. The songs mostly use driving and cars as a metaphor for writing,” he added. “I’m curious about what other people get out of the songs so don’t want to go crazy breaking it down.”

    Dan and Mike

Mercury 85 is Johnson’s third album and features twelve original songs that were all recorded at his home in Jericho, VT. It presents a departure from the live instrumentation of his previous releases, featuring drum machines, amp modeling and MIDI instruments to support his acoustic guitar, banjo and mandolin. While the instrumental support has taken some new turns, said Johnson, the songwriting remains rooted in storytelling and first person narration with strong poetic imagery.

Johnson’s unassuming approach to the mic is intended to allow the story to take the spotlight: Well-matched with his low-key but welcoming attitude towards the listener. The presentation is reminiscent of Bob Dylan, as each song tells a story surrounding common people remembering yesterday, lamenting today, and looking forward to a better tomorrow. Never does there seem to be a resolution to change. As with “Rose”, for which Johnson only recently released a video, the protagonist speaks to another about a woman he casually met at a bar his band had played. Over the course of one night, skirting around the truth and telling lies over cups of coffee, he fell in love. But, it’s apparent he has since spent a long span of time searching her at each bar he happens to play and seems to have given up hope on ever finding her. “If you ever see this girl, she’s got a tattoo of a rose.  Tell her that I miss her when the chilly wind blows.”

Johnson attributes the country landscape of his new home for the stripped down production of his latest release. The focus on the storytelling is certainly his strong suit, and is the most appealing factor to this album. This same quality may also be off-putting to the casual music fan used to a contrasting style, but it is a sound that can easily find itself played at trendy coffee houses.  And, for those who appreciate good storytelling, Mercury 85 is worth a preview (and purchase) on Bandcamp or contact the artist directly on his Facebook page.

Key Tracks: Rose, Mercury 85, and Allentown.

  • Preview: Boston Calling Music Festival May 23-25 2014

For quite some time there were no major music festivals in Boston besides EarthFest—an all-day summer concert, which holds the title as the biggest free radio station concert in the country (hosted by Radio 92.9). And then only last year, an event called Boston Calling sprung up out of nowhere, dipping its toes in the festival waters. Surely enough it did not disappoint and with bands like Of Monsters and Men, Portugal. The Man, The Shins, Matt and Kim, Fun. and The National all performing, the festival even developed its own sound. With the widely acclaimed success of its first event, Boston Calling 2014 geared up soon after for a September 2013 festival, this time featuring acts like Vampire Weekend, Kendrick Lamar, Passion Pit and The Airborne Toxic Event. The festival was even more popular the second time around than the first.

    2013-08-26-BC_CITYHALLPLAZA

Now, in only two weeks, the third-ever Boston Calling is coming back from May 23-25. This Friday through Sunday weekend event features some of its biggest names yet including Jack Johnson, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Death Cab For Cutie. The ticket options consist of a 3-Day Pass, a Weekend Pass (just Saturday and Sunday) and then single-day passes for each day.admat-spring

The festival, which is held at City Hall Plaza, kicks off Friday when the dates open at 6pm. The main entrance is located on Congress Street and the staff highly recommends taking public transportation as the event is easily accessible from multiple MBTA stations, including the Orange, Blue, Red and Green lines. Friday features the mellowest superstar—Hawaiian native Jack Johnson, along with Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and Cass Mccombs. The music is expected to end that night around 11pm.

Saturday’s gates open at 12pm and the all-day event will, again, go on until roughly 11pm. With Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, The Head and the Heart, Frank Turner, Jenny Lewis and The Neighborhood it should be an exciting day. Also scheduled to hit the stage is Warpaint, Walk Off the Earth, Maximo Park and Magic Man. Sunday starts and ends the same times as Saturday. Modest Mouse, Tegan & Sara, Phosphorescent, Built to Spill, Brand New, and Bastille will all be playing. Additionally there will be Kurt Vile and the Violators, The Districts, and Tigerman WHOA!.

Altogether it’s looking like a great weekend for Boston that’s sure to live up to past Boston Calling festivals, if not surpass those.

  • Real Estate Plays The Higher Ground in Burlington, VT – March, 21

It’s not common to see an staff writer stray from his or her namesake territory and cover a show on foreign turf. Every so often, an act so deserving makes an appearance in a neighboring state, a small road trip ensues and the audience is made even more aware of the boundless concert opportunities offered in the Northeast.

The most recent example of this came about on Friday night at The Higher Ground in Burlington, Vermont, where the New Jersey-based jangle-pop outfit, Real Estate put on a headlining set with opening act, Pure X.

Currently on the road in support of their recently released third album, Real Estate played several dates at South by Southwest and two sold out nights in Cambridge, Massachusetts before heading north to Burlington. Their tour with Pure X is currently en route to the Midwest before heading overseas for a European Circuit in May.

While Real Estate’s set at the Higher Ground featured a large portion of material from their debut LP and 2011’s Days, much of the set was made up of material from the latest addition to their discography, Atlas.

Real Estate introduced their set with “Had to Hear,” the same track that opens Atlas. “Had to Hear,” along with much of the material on Real Estate’s latest album, focuses on the barriers in communication brought about by life on the road. For someone who writes so openly about the difficulties of touring, however, Martin Courtney gave the impression of being perfectly comfortable on stage at The Higher Ground.

Real Estate’s live set was incredibly cohesive; Courtney, Bleeker, and guitarist Matt Mondanile’s experience playing together since high school is entirely apparent in their performance. The threesome’s ability to lengthen their songs into intricate jams showed an amazing level of musical awareness. With the recent addition of keyboardist Matt Kallman and contributions from drummer Jackson Pollis, Real Estate’s live sound features a collection of textures and layers that produce a remarkably full sound.

The consistency in Real Estate’s current lineup is largely the result of the recording process behind Atlas. During a sting of tour dates in Wilco’s schedule last summer, Real Estate took over Jeff Tweedy’s Loft studio in Chicago and recorded the album in a relatively short period of time, coming into the process with the album completely written.

It was no surprise on Friday that Real Estate’s set had been the product of more than a year of rehearsing Atlas’ material. While Burlington may be a hike from the Upstate area, Real Estate’s appearance at The Higher Ground proved to be a wholly acceptable reason to make the weekend trip to our northern neighbor.
