  • Yarn and The Brummy Brothers to Perform at Red Square on Valentine’s Day

On Friday, February 14th, Yarn, a Brooklyn based band with members originally from Schenectady will take the stage at Red Square. These fellas have cultivated a following across the United States to which the fans affectionately call themselves the “Yarmy.” Perhaps it is the incessant touring that attracts old and new fans, but more likely Blake Christiana’s art of song crafting captivates and rivets the world of Roots Americana. The Brummy Brothers will be making their debut appearance in Albany as they open for Yarn.

After spending a few weeks in the recording studio, these bluegrass rockers are ready to stretch their legs for a lively night of song and dance. Eric (mandolin) and Dave Brumberg (upright bass) were joined by Andrew Morris (guitar) and Russell Gottlieb (banjo) in 2012 to form The Brummy Brothers, touring the Northeast heavily. These New Jersey boys would inspire all to “shake their brum.” Doors are at 8 pm, show starts at 9pm. Don’t miss this one! Pick up tickets at the door for only $10.

  • The Fab Faux Coming to The Egg This Saturday

The Fab Faux, accompanied by the Crème Tangerine Strings and Hogshead Horns will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the arrival of The Beatles in New York with a concert at The Egg on Saturday, February 15th at 7:30 PM.

    php53Imn5PM

Unlike Beatles tribute bands who sport wigs and period costumes to recreate a Beatles concert, the Fab Faux instead features some of New York’s top studio musicians – Jimmy Vivino and Frank Agnello (guitar), Will Lee (bass), Jack Petruzelli (keyboards) and Rich Pagano (drums). With a commitment to the accurate reproduction of The Beatles’ repertoire, The Fab Faux will perform a concert of songs rarely or never performed live by the Beatles.

This will include a set of “unplugged” tunes. While the Beatles often used acoustic instruments on their recordings, they were hard pressed to play their quieter material in concert due to the volume of the ecstatic audiences who screamed and cheered through their live performances.

The concert will also feature works from their later recordings, which featured highly developed arrangements, often enhanced with strings and horns. By the time these works were written and recorded, the Beatles had stopped touring so they were never performed in concert.

Tickets are $35-$45 and are available at The Egg Box Office at the Empire State Plaza, by telephone – 518-473-1845 – or on line.

  • Blues Singer Alexis Suter Performing at The Recovery Lounge and BluSeed Studios February 15-16

There are gems in the Adirondacks, hidden places for music, speakeasies of the forest, places where they appear to be normal businesses by day and then at night transform into underground music venues. Superhip shows occur, spread by word of mouth, donations at the door with shared communal liquids and solids. Two such venues, The Recovery Lounge and BluSeed Studios, are hosting visiting International Recording Artist Alexis P Suter and her band the weekend of Feb 15th-16th.

  • Spend an Evening with Alt-Country Legend Steve Earle at Club Helsinki

The Saturday of Presidents’ Weekend should be a blast at Club Helsinki in “Upstate’s Downtown” Hudson, where Steve Earle will be belting out some of his signature rockabilly, alt-country, and anti-war tunes. Garnering inspiration from musicians such as Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, many of Steve Earle’s songs have been recorded by country superstars including Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Joan Baez. After a brief hiatus in the early ‘90s, Earle came back strong with an album that returned to more of his folksy acoustic roots. This tour will be in support of his latest album Townes, comprising songs written by Earle’s mentor, the late great singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt.  Come on out to spend an evening with this triple Grammy-winning legend, who is kind enough to make the trip to our neck of the woods for a performance.

The show will be starting at 9 PM, with the doors opening at 6:00. Come early if you can, and be sure to enjoy a tasty dinner of slow-cooked southern cuisine served up in the restaurant right inside the club! • Clap Your Hands Say Wow! Alec Ounsworth Rocks Big Blue North Studios in Utica

Picture hundreds of people huddled around, smoking cigarettes, drinking beers under the bright lights of the grand marquee waiting to get into the show. Now take that image and think the complete opposite and that is the feel of the Alec Ounsworth (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) living room tour. If a patron of the concert at Big Blue North Studios in Utica didn’t have specific directions and overview of what they were in for, they would have thought they were in the wrong place. A huge church that Big Blue North Studios now calls home was dark with nothing but a candlelit pathway leading to the entrance on January 28th.

A kind woman was at the door, taking names, letting fans know that coffee and tea were available to the right. Yup, you heard it right coffee and tea. This was a concert? The ambiance at this point was that of an AA meeting. Confusion filled the room; confusion and anticipation. As the crowd of 40 people or so sat in metal folding chairs, the stage was set up just as if it were a living room (hence the tours name) with ablack and white TV with a scrambled image, a tan fuzzy chair, a fireplace, a table and a microphone in the middle of it all. Intimate doesn’t even begin to describe the atmosphere. When Ounsworth walked through the crowd and stepped on stage he had everyone’s utmost attention.

This was more than a show, it was an experience, a rare one at that. Seeing an indie hero such as Alec Ounsworth playing his usually fast paced songs, stripped down and played completely different, while the farthest person away from him was 20 feet away. Ounsworth proved to his fans that he still has it and with the new formation of CYHSY, the new album has nothing but the possibility of greatness.

Opening up with the beautiful David Bowie classic “Absolute Beginners” highlighted Ounsworth’s vocal range and not stretching it too far to get a feel for how the room would sound with an audience. The intimacy was so apparent that Ounsworth not only didn’t mind fan interaction, but encouraged it. By talking to the fans throughout. When he played “Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood”, a classic off the CYHSY self-titled debut album, there were people quietly sitting but yet moving to the music, smiling, mouthing the words, as not to disturb the ambiance of the room. At this point where the man of the hour started to cough, and sniffle a bit, making comments implying he may have a cold, but not only didn’t he stop the show, or take a break, he continued his high pitch on the verge of whiny vocals. Ounsworth offered fans a treat by playing “Blameless”, a new song off the full bands album set for a spring release, transitioning smoothly into “In this Home on Ice”, stripped down, even more so than the song’s previous versions. The show closed with “Underwater (you and me)”, off the bands second album Some Loud Thunder, a spectacular way to end the set. Arguably the bands most beautiful song made even that much more due to the intimate surroundings.

Ounsworth proved to his fans that he still has it and with the new formation of CYHSY, the new album has nothing but the possibility of greatness.

  • The Chronicles End Their January Red Square Residency

With three weeks under their belts, The Chronicles finished up their residency at Red Square on January 30th with a great set of music honoring the late J Dilla as well as some of their own music.  Starting the evening off was Ithaca’s Big Mean Sound Machine.

The band stays true to their name, with everyone barely fitting on Red Square’s stage and blowing the audience away with music power that is seen so rarely.  The funky numbers they played showcased each member’s talents flawlessly.  The three person horn section was strong throughout the performance, leading most tunes along with the drums, bass, and congas.  Both the guitars and the keyboards are used more as filler than as leads like they are in most bands.  It gives the band a unique sound that should be enjoyable to everyone, and with a new album coming out in June, it is looking like a big year is coming for Big Mean Sound Machine.

    20140130 - The Chronicles 4

The Chronicles came out after a short break and tore through a set that included guest JB for the J Dilla portion of the set.  J Dilla is of course best known for the producing he did on many amazing hip hop tunes throughout the 90s until his death in 2006.  JB flawlessly rapped over the music and clearly enjoyed helping The Chronicles out with this special show.  “E=MC2”, “Stakes is High”, and “Fall in Love” were great highlights of the set.  Jeff Nania, who mainly plays various saxophones, even took a turn at the mic during the evening.  The Chronicles closed the night, and ran out in style with a one two punch of “Village Livin’” and “Mr. Clean.” This run let the band stretch their musical chops out to all regions of the music landscape and it suited the band well.  Hopefully Albany will see another residency down the line.

Setlist: Time, Gobstopper, E=MC2, Move, Won’t Do, Stakes is High, Fall in Love>Think Twice>Fall in Love, Interzone, Just Knew, Strasbourg/St. Denis, Village Livin, Mr. Clean
