  • Dierks Bentley Announces Utica, NY as Part of Second Leg of #RISERTOUR

Included in the first round of announced cities for Dierks Bentley’s second leg of his Risertour is Utica.  In a genius of a marketing concept, fans are asked to unlock the cities by sharing the announcement.  As the percentage of shares increase, so do the list of cities until all cities and details are announced.

    Dierks Bentley
    Dierks Bentley

Dierks Bentley will be joined on this leg of the tour by Randy Houser, Eric Paslay, and Tim Hicks.  Fans in attendance at the Taste of Country Music Festival this past June at Hunter Mountain saw first hand the amazing job Randy Houser did in the 9th hour, putting on an acoustic show as his bandmates sat with the broken down bus on the side of a Pennsylvanian highway.  Also performing at the Taste of Country was Eric Paslay who is quickly making a name for himself in country music with hits such as “Song About A Girl” and “Friday Night” and wowing the audiences.  Canadian country star, Tim Hicks, will join the group north of the Mason-Dixon line and will learn first hand just how much these northerners love their country music and these superstars.

  • Triumph to Invoke The Disco Biscuits at The Parish Public House

This coming Friday, August 15, will be a pretty heady evening at the newly revamped Parish Public House in downtown Albany. People will come from all over to see what has changed at the historic venue once know as Red Square. Last weekend in Washington, DC and at the Gathering of the Vibes, the Disco Biscuits put on some of their most historic shows, playing with Grateful Dead drummers, Billy Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart. This was a rare appearance for all involved, as the rhythm devils, Hart and Kreutzmann have not played together since 2009, and the Disco Biscuits have played sporadically over the last few years, leaving songs that fans love to fall into a “Great Abyss”. This is where Triumph: a Tribute to the Disco Biscuits comes in.

Forming out of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, members of B.A Dario and Resident Frequency have come together to bring these adored songs out of obscurity. They will be bringing their take on these songs to Parish Public House 8 pm on Friday, August 15th, with special guests, the very experimental and abstract Squid Parade. This is a night any fan of transfusion should not miss. Take a listen for yourself below to these great live versions of both bands.

Tickets for the show are $10 the door.

  • Robin Williams 1951 – 2014

One of our writers approached the editorial staff on Monday morning about writing a preview for a local comedy show.  As it is, few publications dedicate themselves to writing comedy reviews, and after a lengthy online debate, neither is this one.  But by the following morning, I shot an email to the rest of our editorial staff to inform them of my intent to write about another comedian.

The irony in which Robin Williams lived his life, and how it ultimately came to an end, would not be lost on his beloved Dead Poet’s Society character, John Keating. The comedian and respected actor, according to several news reports, chose to end his life Monday morning at the age of 63. The news of such a vibrant life that had suddenly been extinguished was shocking. Once details emerged as to how, sentiments quickly turned to heartbreaking.

The Academy Award winning actor, and five-time Grammy Award winning artist, was introduced to the limelight in 1978 in the starring role of the television sitcom, Mork and Mindy. With such an expansive career that has since stretched across five different decades, Williams touched millions of people that includes Upstate New York. News of his death traveled across social media.  On Facebook, Plattsburgh alum recalled his performance at the school in the mid-’80s.  Sean Allen, Director of Marketing for The Palace Theatre, said his performance on the Albany stage in 2008 was “the top five funniest live performances I have ever seen in my life.”

His stand up routine was a window into his own life, with Williams commonly running at a manic pace for sixty minutes or more, with hardly a few seconds between jokes. The subject often referred to drug and alcohol abuse, to which he had openly admitted to being a recovering alcoholic.  In his 1986 performance at New York City’s Metropolitan Theatre, he had said he gave up drinking, and remained sober for 20 years before a brief relapse.

Contrasting his adult-themed act on the stage, Williams touched young fans with several performances on both television and silver screen – the aforementioned role as the alien, Mork; as the Genie in Disney’s Aladdin; and his first movie role as Popeye. In several interviews, Williams attributed his comedy to being shy as a child. He allowed his imagination to create characters, and lived out stories as a one-person performer.

Williams was among 20 students accepted into Juilliard School in New York City in 1973, and ultimately one of only two accepted into the Advanced Program by John Houseman that year. The other actor was Christopher Reeve, whom Williams maintained a friendship with until his death in 2004. It was later in Williams’ career where he received his most notable acclaim in adult dramas- as an English professor in Dead Poet’s Society; as a doctor in Awakenings and Patch Adams, and in What Dreams May Come.  As Dr. Sean Maguire, Williams earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for his performance as a grieving psychologist determined to get through to a troubled patient played by Matt Damon, in 1997’s Good Will Hunting.

Williams’ body of work covered the dreams of childhood and the hopes and struggles that come with being an adult, which perhaps has made it difficult for his fans to deal with the news of his passing. His candid interviews and heart-touching roles have endured the years, having sometimes served as ever-present lessons about life. Yesterday’s news was as sudden as the end to his 1982 film Life According to Garp, and continues to echo out into the silence he has left behind. The deafening of which compels one to scream out “Jumanji” in an attempt to reverse the day’s events. I know you can’t rationalize the act of a depressed man, but I wonder if Robin Williams would have known just how many people would be pained by his death, would he have carried through with it? I don’t see the need to judge him. I can empathize to an extent. I suppose as common as it is for people to call him selfish, there are just as many people who wonder how it could have been prevented. And, that’s not to blame the people close to him either. He is a celebrity, and too many people have an unhealthy obsession with famous people. But, he was a part of my childhood and I related to him after learning he was painfully shy as a child, as was I – and still am. As trite as it sounds, to hear he died was a punch to the gut. To hear he chose suicide, I felt the loss of opportunity – to see him again, to extend gratitude towards him for sharing his talents. For the lack of a better phrase, it plain sucks that he’s gone.

    O Captain! My Captain! Godspeed.

  • The Zombies Invade Peekskill this Friday with Special Guest Bruce Sudano

No, there is no zombie invasion, but ’60s British Invasion band The Zombies will be bringing nostalgic sounds back to the Paramount Hudson Valley Friday evening with Bruce Sudano

    The Zombies
The Zombies in their current lineup

Reforming in 2001 after a couple of one-time reunion stints since their active years in the ’60s, The Zombies currently have only two of the original members in the lineup. However, that hasn’t stopped them from actively touring every year in the past decade. Aside from original members Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone, the band has tapped bassist Jim Rodford who played bass with The Kinks from 1978 until they disintegrated in 1996. Also joining the band are Tom Toomey on guitars and Steve Rodford on drums.

The Zombies were the second British band to achieve a chart-topper in the United States following The Beatles with “She’s Not There”. Of course, they’re also known for their other hits “Time of the Season” and “Tell Her No”. Their album Odessey and Oracle was recently ranked at #100 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.

Opening the show will be singer-songwriter Bruce Sudano. The Brooklyn native has been performing in a solo career since the ’80s, but he has a rather impressive songwriting resume having written songs for Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and his wife Donna Summer, who the music world lost too soon in 2012.

The show starts at 8pm on August 15th. Tickets are available from the Paramount here.

  • Alan Evans Playonbrother Ready for Free Show in Buffalo

Alan Evans might be a seasoned vet in the Buffalo music scene and beyond, but with a new member recently brought into Playonbrother, there’s a freshness and excitement that has been propelling the band as of late. Just over a month ago now, longtime keyboard and organ player Beau Sasser left the group and was replaced by a new, yet familiar, face in Kris Yunker.

alan evans buffaloTo backup, Alan originally met Danny Mayer, Playonbrother’s guitarist, when Danny’s On The Spot Trio went to record at Alan’s studio. The keyboardist for the group was none other than Kris Yunker, so when Alan had to begin looking for Beau’s replacement, he didn’t have to look very far.

The energy within the rejuvenated band is at an all-time high with Kris adding an element of musical excitement. The band has always been a creative powerhouse, churning out two studio albums in their short existence, but they are visibly feeling it now with the latest addition. Just four shows in to Kris’ Playonbrother career, the band made a stop at Evergroove Studios in Colorado while on tour back on July 14. What was initially setup as a free, live webcast eventually turned into the first recording of the new arrangement.

Listening to the show live, you could already hear the chemistry and potential the new lineup has. The album opens with two Playonbrother classics in “Who Dare Knock” and “Drop Hop.” It understandably takes those two songs for Kris to get his feet underneath him, but as the band dives into the new material on the remaining tracks, it’s clear to see what the newest member brings to the table. As a side note, the new music heard on this live cut will be part of their latest album that is set for release at the end of September. All and all, if you want to get a taste for this new lineup, you can listen or buy the EP here, or check out the video at the bottom of the article of the studio session itself.

alan evans buffaloIf reading that get’s you excited, the band is set to play a free show in Alan Evans’ hometown of Buffalo, NY tomorrow, Wednesday, August 13 at Larkin Square. Being that it’s been over a month since the lineup change and having around twenty shows under their belt, Playonbrother is bringing a highly anticipated set back to where it all started for Alan. As for any show in his hometown, Al always seems to bring something extra on those nights, so make sure to head to Larkin and catch what the new lineup has in store for us.

Opening the night will be Buffalo’s own, the Forealists. This is a band you’ll want to make sure to arrive early and check out. They feature one of the top up and coming musicians in the Buffalo music scene in bassist Zuri Appleby. Her ability on the instrument far surpasses what you might expect a local musician to be capable of. Her talent alone should put whatever project she is involved in on everyone’s radar, and that is on top of the other talented members of the band. What is extra special about the Larkin Square shows as well is the collaboration between the opening and headlining acts that closes each show. We saw local music critic Jeff Miers and his band mix it up with Aqueous just a few weeks ago and now there are high expectations, at least from me, to see what Wednesday’s collaboration will churn out. As the title states, the show is free, so there is no excuse why you shouldn’t stop down and check out two incredible acts tomorrow night. The show has an early start at 5pm, so don’t be late!

Also to note, Playonbrother will be hitting a few other dates throughout Upstate New York in case you can’t catch their show in Buffalo.  Check them out at the following shows:

8/14: Funk ‘n Waffles in Syracuse, NY
    8/16: Mazzstock in Marlboro, NY
8/17: Newbury Life Food & Music Festival in Buffalo, NY (FREE EVENT)

  • Origin and King Parrot Start National Tour in Clifton Park

On Wednesday August 13, Origin and King Parrot start their month-long adventure of bringing crushing metal to the masses of America. This first show is also a homecoming, of sorts, for  some members of Origin, as it is close to their stomping grounds and is the only East Coast date on the entire tour. Playing within the intimate confines of Trickshot Billards in Clifton Park, N.Y., all the bands featured on this bill will be in rare form, showcasing metal all night long.

    Origin
    ORIGIN. Photo provided.

Starting at 6 p.m., Declension, and then The Killing Condition, will bring serious hometown metal to the stage and should not be missed. Origin cut their teeth on stages much like this one, and it is always a treat to see what the local music pool has to offer. Brutal local flavor, served right up front.

Following them is Abolishment of Flesh, on loan from Texas, who aim to bring the full performance of their combo of black, thrash and death metal to the stage. Beyond Creation from Quebec, Canada unleash their relentless assault of progressive death metal next, and by then the show will be almost ready to hit its boiling point. King Parrot will surely tip the scale right over with their heavy Australian brand of thrash metal tearing the final pieces off the roof, and setting the stage for the headliner.

Origin, hailing first from Kansas, the band was the incredible brain child of Paul Ryan (guitar) and former member Jeremy Turner (bass), later eventually replaced by Mike Flores (bass/vocals). Through different line-up changes, the four piece now features Jason Keyser (vocals) and John Longstreth (drums). Jason and John both call Upstate New York home, and seeing this powerhouse band come to this area is a rare treat. Their new album, Omnipresent, has been getting great reviews since it’s release on Nuclear Blast and Agonia Records in July. A mix of the great grind and death metal tropes that Origin is known for, along with fresh melodic and majestic musical ideas, songs like the tour title ‘All Things Dead’ will be a high point in a night of great metal moments.

  • The Great New York State Fair – There Is a Reason It’s Called “Great”

This year’s Great New York State Fair is adding up to be one spectacular event with headlining shows at the Grandstand and Chevy Court venues, while the regional stages offer a diverse mix for music lovers of all genres. Taking place for 12 days and nights – August 21-September 1, 2014.

The Great NY State Fair is appropriately named as Syracuse, NY was the site of the nations very first State Fair back in 1841. The fair traveled for the next 47 years amongst New York State cities until finding its final home in Syracuse in 1890; when the Syracuse Land Co. donated its current 100 acre property. Originally held to promote agricultural improvement and local farm and home, the fair has evolved over the years to feature not only these items, but also to promote both local musicians and national musicians as they celebrate traditional customs and cultures of regional areas and attract families to the event. In 1972, Sonny & Cher’s performance broke all concert attendance records, holding the record until 2009 when Shinedown’s concert of 15,000 strong exceeded the record, only to be ousted once again in 2011 when Bruno Mars drew more than 35,000 concert goers to Chevy Court. Can any acts beat that attendance record this year? It could happen I believe with the stellar line up being offered.

In addition to multitude of fair like attractions; i.e. livestock, carnival rides, competitions for home-made goods and wares, and of course fried everything, the New York State Fair also offers five stages throughout the fairgrounds featuring the most diverse collection of music and entertainment for all attendees.  The State Fair Grandstand is the largest venue hosting the powerhouse performers and events each evening, while Chevy Court is an attendee favorite as huge acts come to perform for the fairgoers free of charge right inside the main gates twice a day. The Midway Music Series features acts on the west side of the fairgrounds over by the Midway carnival rides showcasing national and regional performers of all sorts throughout the entire day, while the Regional Artists Variety Stage features special regional artists and acts from our great state. The Empire Theater Stage is located inside at the Art & Home Center and features a multitude of talent from special speakers, to performers, and dancers all day long inside the cover of the Art & Home Center Building.

NYS Music Music Guide will be there throughout the week to highlight as many shows as possible for our readers. With acts all over the grounds at the same time, our team will try to bring to you a diverse mix of national, regional, and local entertainment throughout the week with sneak peek photos, social media uploads, and a full review of shows, interviews, and photo galleries we are able to document.

    Overview of  Venue Lineups

Grandstands – For dates, times, and ticket information please go online to www.nysfair.org

Brad Paisley/Randy Houser/Leah Turner/Charlie Worsham – This amazing line up has been touring this summer bringing down the house in venues all over the nation.  Each one of these acts are favorites in country music and to have all four together is a real treat and a must see lineup for everyone.  Brad Paisley shreds like a rock star, Randy Houser still has me floored with how he showed up at Taste of Country after his bus broke down and did the most amazing acoustic set I have ever seen, while Leah Turner rocks the stage like a country superstar, and one of the most loved new artists Charlie Worsham gives so much back to his fans that it’s no wonder he’s a fan favorite.

Carrie Underwood – Super excited to have this sensational powerhouse here this year.  One of the first to be announced, the anticipation of her arrival performing at the Grandstands mounts daily.

Train/Wallflowers – Having Train and the Wallflowers together totally is mind-blowing and has me in high anticipation of this show as these two Grammy award-winning groups will absolute blow the roof off the stage. Can’t wait. Forget San Franciso, just save me.

Jason Aldean/Florida Georgia Line/Tyler Farr -Wow is all I can say about this trio of acts.  Some of the biggest names in country music on the stage on the same night?  Each should be headlining their own shows, and together they are a winning trifecta. Definite winning bet.

Kid Rock with Big Smo – This multi talented musician has made leaps across genres bringing to audiences everywhere an amazing eclectic sound.  Opening with Big Smo, who is categorized as an american country rap musician, what an awesome combo.

Pitbull – The 315 can’t wait to welcome the 305 to the state fair this year as this international superstar fires up the stage at the fair.

CHEVY COURT – for dates and times please go online to nysfair.org

Jason Derulo – Can he possibly break the record set in 2011? I’m betting on this one.

Kellie Pickler – Opening the stage for the first show, this country superstar will get this party started.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts – Nothing is cooler than a rocking chick with a guitar, and Joan Jett is the epitome of rock and roll.

Angie Johnson – Up and coming country artist Angie Johnson is best known as part of Cee Lo Green’s team on The Voice, but what makes this young lady so special is her dedication to her country as part of our military.

Eli Young Band – This highly popular country band has been topping the charts over the past eight years, and for those who have not had a chance to experience the  Eli Young Band, you are in for a treat.

Uncle Kracker – Hugely popular country musician, Uncle Kracker is one of those musicians that can leap across genres with the ease of spiderman.  Love that voice.

MKTO – These two young men share their talents in not only stage but screen.  Emerging pop duo hit the charts already with “Classic”, can’t wait to see what else is on their new album.

Phillip Phillips – Hard to believe Phillip Phillips just won Idol only two years ago.  Since that time he’s released two albums hitting the charts and making his way in the business as a veteran now.

Barenaked Ladies – This Canadian rock band certainly has a way of bringing to life their music in a fun-loving, quick quitted, fast paced manner, that makes it fun to experience.

Smash Mouth – California-based rock band, Smash Mouth has a unique way of bringing to life covers as well as their own original music that has an effect on your feet that can’t stop them moving around in time to the music.  Strange…very strange.

The Bacon Brothers – Okay, who’s with me on this one?….Is there anything better than Bacon?  Okay maybe two of them then.  I stand corrected.

Sean Kingston – This dynamic Jamaican based musician brings the tropics together with the asphalt jungle mixing music in a way that moves his audiences.

Herman’s Hermits Starring Peter Noone – Original lead vocalist will bring audience members back to their 60’s roots with hits such as “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” and “There’s A Kind of Hush”

Bowser’s Rock and Roll Party – Like to travel back to the ’50s Bowser certainly has a way of transporting you with his Rock and Roll Party

Night Ranger – Turning the volume back up with Night Ranger is just what the audience will love as they belt out hits such as “Sister Christian”

Chef Anne Burrell – Originally from the central New York region (Cazenovia), it’s a pleasure to welcome back Food Network host and great Chef Anne Burrell.

The Neighbourhood – It’s fitting to have the band who plays “Sweater Weather” come to upstate NY and share their talents. We promise to keep it cool without the need for any sweaters.

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes – Jersey based rock group, this band has been making music with the likes of Steve Van Zandt and the Boss and Jon Bon Jovi over the years.

Bell Biv Devoe – When talking about R&B and Hip Hop in the 90’s you can’t help but think of Bell Biv Devoe.  Again, it does something to your feet, where twitching begins and movement takes over.

John Kay & Steppenwolf – Classic rock at it’s best, these guys were “Born to Be Wild” and CNY is ready to be wild right along with them.

The Doobie Brothers – No introduction is needed for this group.  This group is considered timeless rock, and deservedly so.

As you meander around the fairgrounds don’t forget to stop in at the Region Artists Variety Stage, The Midway Music Stage, and the Empire Stages to get a taste of local and regional music and performers. Looking to see dancers, don’t miss the Ukrainian Dancers, the Irish Dancers, or the Cloggers. For a special treat this year you can see the contestants from The Voice, three of the original Brady Bunch children, ice carving demonstrations, comedians from Chelsea Lately, a hypnotist, favorites from The Amazing Race and Big Brother, and variety of instrumentalists. As for music, there is something for everyone from Caribbean and Latin acts of One Black Voice and Panigma Steel Drum Bands, and Grupo Pagan, to Polka with Fritz’s Polka Band.  You’ll have Indian music with Veena & Devesh, and Folk/Americana Music with Mark Zane, Dark Hollow, Ruddy Well Band, and Big Eyed Phish.   If Country is more your thing fans will see John Anderson with Logan Brill  and Morgan Frazier, and newcomer Shannon Marie. For those into Hard-Rock/Rock  you’ll love Afterburn, Pacinello, Young The Giant, 4 Point 0, Mo Chester, and Action Item.  For a diverse mix, don’t miss these other regional favorites – Ferguson & Rogers, Margo Macero, Wagner Inc., Two Hour Delay, Ashley Allen with the Goonies, Cold Sweat Roc, Jenna Renae, Action Item, Bill Schmitt & The Bluesmasters, Until It’s Over There, Merry Mischief, Cash, Chris Dukes Band, Anthony Gargiula & The AG Dance Crew, Jason J., Megan & Liz With Heyday, The Lake Effect, the Rick Short Band, and Michael & Anjela Lynn featuring the Talented Ones.
