  • Interpol Summer Tour Includes NYC Date

Interpol made their mark on the US and UK alternative rock charts in the early 2000’s with hits such as “Slow Hands” and “Evil” and have a summer tour coming to NYC.  Combining a modern American rock sound with a ton of ’80s post-punk British influences like Joy Division, the band picked up a solid following of faithful “‘polsters”. Despite that, no one’s heard much from Interpol since their 2010 self-titled release, until just recently.

The band has released an extensive, festival heavy tour schedule, including a June 7th date just across the border at the Field Trip Festival in Toronto and a homecoming show June 8th at The Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City.

This will be their first time playing in the US in nearly three years.

It was filmed in 1983 over the course of three December nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater during the “Speaking in Tongues” tour. • Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band’s First Time in Buffalo

Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band is a little lengthy of a band name in my opinion, but lucky for everyone, they’re also known, simply, as “Booty Band.”  As much a mouthful the name is, their sound is a lot for your ears to take in as well.   Their self-proclaimed raucous live show is a humble statement and their mix of deep funk with rock, soul, and rap makes for an interesting combination. Make no mistake, you might not take them seriously at first, but after hearing their spin on funk, you will begin to understand why they can put the fun in funky and showcase some serious chops at the same time. So, hearing all of this, are you ready for a last-minute Booty call?

Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band

Just announced today, the band is slated to hit the stage at Nietzsche’s next Thursday.  The first-ever show for them in Buffalo is a great way to kick off the weekend a little early, and with a $7 ticket price, how can you argue?  With the release of the latest album this past October and a heavy tour schedule, they are making their name known, regardless of length or variation.  The show was put together by ECE Presents who have been doing a outstanding job in the Western New York area as of late, bringing quality talent and growing the scene organically, one show at a time.  Joining Booty Band and opening the night will be The Wakos who were hand-chosen for the show as they are the perfect fit for Booty’s Band’s bodacious sound.

Check out a sample of Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty here and get a taste of what’s in store for next week:

  • Kesey’s Son To Bring Furthur Back

The quaint village of Millbrook, nestled in the geographic middle of Dutchess County, is no stranger to celebrities.  Located no furthur than a 90-minute drive from New York City, it also boasts a population of less than 1,500 neighborly residents.  Actor Matthew Modine and music artist Daryl Hall – both local residents – can often be seen visiting the local farm market, and do so with an apparent confidence they won’t be approached. As is life in the quiet village of Millbrook.

But, it wasn’t so placid in 1964 when Timothy Leary established residency at one of the local estates.  The Dietrich Estate, its gatehouse can be viewed by those traveling NYS Route 44A, briefly served as headquarters to promote his “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out” philosophy. What happened at the estate is recorded in Tom Wolfe’s 1968 novel Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, which recounts the cross-country trip Wolfe took along with Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters, aboard the technocolored bus named Further .

Now, Kesey’s family is planning on furthering the patriarch’s legacy.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kesey’s cross-country journey, a Kickstarter venture is underway to bring the iconic bus back to life and tour the country again.

As of today, May 23rd, the initial goal of $27,500 has been surpassed.  Part of the money is being used to refurbish the original 1947 bus, which will also serve as a “rolling recording studio with live FM broadcasting,” as stated on the family’s fund raising page.  The rest, well, it looks as if they will be doing their best to recapture the “magic” from the ’60s.  Their intentions are printed on Kickstarter, in bold face.

    further

We expect a huge turnout in 2014 as we, with your financial help, show up in full Prankster style in various cities, parties, and the vibrant festival scene.

To which towns, cities, parties and festivals we will be able to bring the Bus and the Pranksters is entirely contingent on your generosity.  The trip could be a few short weeks, or a few months, covering countless miles and many parties: it all depends on your contributions.

The more we raise over our target, the longer Furthur and the the Pranksters will be able to be on the road and recording the fun at every stop!

    – Furthur Bus 50th Anniversary “Trip”

      Zane Kesey and Derek Stevens

Unlike 1964, this 8,500-mile tour promises a multi-media experience that will include video streaming, Internet updates, along with the aforementioned audio recording.  Pranksters will be hired as “extras” to star in the videos throughout the journey.

The original cross-country trek did involve filming, but the intent of releasing the footage as a feature film never came to fruition.  Nonetheless, the bus trip, and the events surrounding it, became the stuff of legend.  The Who released “Magic Bus” in the summer of 1968, in reference to Kesey’s bus.  The Grateful Dead did the same in 1971 with their release of “The Other One”.

As magical and whimsical the eyes of the “Baby-Boom Generation” may view Kesey’s journey, it’s not shared by all.  Decades after Kesey and Leary finally left Millbook in 1970, residents still talk about the past as if speaking of their own misguided, adolescent children.

The psychedelic parties at the Dietrich Estate came to an end, thanks in large part to then-Dutchess County Assistant District Attorney G. Gordon Liddy.

Before his involvement with the Watergate burglaries, Liddy made a name for himself for his unrelenting pursuit of Leary.  He initiated numerous busts on the estate, leading to arrests for narcotics, public nudity, and lewd and lascivious behavior.

It is assumed with great confidence that Kesey will not be approached by the residents of Millbrook to be added as a stop on the latest tour.

  • Phish Announces New Album ‘Fuego’

Fuego, the first studio album from Phish in nearly five years, will be released by JEMP Records on June 24. Later that day, they will perform on ‘Late Show with David Letterman.” Phish recorded Fuego with legendary producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel) last fall, as the band’s 30th anniversary approached. They memorably performed brand new songs for their Halloween ‘musical costume’ on October 31st at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

phish Fuego albumToday NPR Music’s “All Songs Considered” premieres “Waiting All Night,” one of the album’s 10 original tracks. Fuego is available for pre-order now in digital, CD and vinyl formats at Phish.com. The iTunes album pre-order will launch tomorrow, May 15. Fans who pre-order Fuego at phish.com or on the iTunes Store will instantly receive a download of “Waiting All Night.”

The songs for Fuego took shape during a series of visits to Phish’s longtime creative hub, The Barn, a rustic, reconstructed barn-turned-rehearsal/recording studio located outside Burlington, Vermont. There they explored dozens of ideas, which led to a notable shift in the band’s songwriting approach. While Fuego includes tracks that individual members brought to the table in usual Phish fashion, the bulk of the material was written by all four, working together at The Barn.

“For years, there’s been a distinct difference between how we did things live and how we did them in studio,” notes Jon Fishman. “But the way we go about things live, the way the musical ball is passed around, is now happening much more in the studio-not because we’re trying to duplicate how we play on stage, just because this is how we operate as a band, period.”

Fuego was recorded at Ronnie’s Place and Anarchy Studios in Nashville, TN, Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL and at The Barn in Vermont. A variety of background vocalists and horn players contributed to the album. The title track was recorded at Boardwalk Hall on October 30, as Phish prepared for the Halloween show.

  • The New Mastersounds Announce First Show in Buffalo with Orgone

Just announced today, The New Mastersounds will be playing their first ever show in Buffalo, NY later this year on Wednesday, September 3rd with Orgone. Calling England home, it’s understandable why this funky four-piece hasn’t played the area, but The Tralf will welcome them with open arms as the group has always had a great following due to their unique blend of music.  Their most recent album, Therapy, was released earlier this year in March to great reviews and adds to an impressive catalog of music since their inception in 1999.

Joining them is another band who’s rarely played Buffalo in Orgone.  The L.A.-based band is well-known on the West Coast, but has rarely done any extensive touring on this side of the country.  Like The New Mastersounds, Orgone has its roots in funk, but stretches the boundaries in many directions as they touch on soul, boogie, disco, and afrobeat.

The combination of the two bands is going to make for one incredible night of music as they compliment each other well and likely won’t be back again for quite some time.  Stay tuned for ticket info this Friday, and make sure to grab them fast to take advantage of this rare opportunity.
