  • Thank Jesus, Metal Returns to Saratoga

The Saratoga Springs, New York horse racing tourists are going home, students are going back to school, and the metal is returning to the Putnam Den. Hometown hard rockers Thank Jesus Christ and the Hallucinogenic Allstars [JCHA] are offering up a great night of music on Friday, September 5th. Five dollars will get you through the door, and into a night heavy on the music and the fun.

JCHA has been hosting a monthly heavy music residency at the Den, whose reputation leans toward jam music.  The monthly onslaughts have been importing talent from around the northeast along with other local heavy hitters.  This month is no different except that instead of it’s normal Thursday occurrence, Metal is invading the Saratoga prime-time, a sacred Friday night.

Crown of Vultures, formerly Vacant, from Albany, will bring their progressive metal to the stage. Then the incredible two man assault of Foaming at the Mouth is an act not to be missed, bringing black and death metal to heights you might not soon forget. Surfacing, from Brooklyn will round out the eclectic night with metalcore reminiscent of Miss May I, and are poised to release their debut full length CD in October.

JCHA is the premier stoner heavy rock band in the region, and along with their on stage bartender/light show technician, will project a performance that has to be seen to be believed. Local artist Alexis Herzog will be painting live during the show, and her finished work from the previous show will be raffled off to one lucky winner, courtesy of only the price of admission.

Summer is over, fall is about to begin. Friday nights in beautiful Saratoga Springs can be unfiltered excitement during this time, as businesses are resetting from a busy season, and ready to entice the Upstate crowd to come out. Have faith, for JCHA, along with the Putnam Den, promise to provide you with a great show to have some fun, and bang your head.

  • Interview: Escape The Fate at Rockstar Uproar at the New York State Fair

Escape The Fate have been making waves in rock and metal the past few years and currently are on this year’s Rockstar Energy Uproar Tour, headlining the Festival Stage in support of their latest album Ungrateful. I was honored to get the opportunity to spend a couple of minutes getting to know them. Drummer Robert Ortiz and guitarist “Thrasher” Bell were kind enough to invite me into their tour bus and gave me some insightful information on their music, the tour, and how rock and metal music is finally getting some recognition it deserves. Listen to the interview here or read it transcribed below.

    etf1co

Jay Saint G: So far, how’s the tour been going?

Robert Ortiz: It’s been going great man every show has been crazy it has been a good time I really enjoyed it and we have played some headliners and intimate shows; just added them to fill in the dates when we haven’t been doing Uproar and those have been going great too cuz it gave us the chance to get up close to our fans, and that we haven’t done in while and it’s been good.

Jay Saint G: I understand you’re from Upstate as well?

Thrasher Bell: Yeah, born and raised in Albany, NY. I used to play Saratoga Winters and Valentines growing up. It’s awesome to bring this package to Syracuse this year.

Jay Saint G: Very nice. Also, I know Maria Brink from, In This Moment, is from the same area if I’m not mistaken, so have you guys played any shows together?

    Thrasher Bell: No, we didn’t.

Jay Saint G: Figured I’d ask. I understand the band has gone through quite some changes since Dying Is The Latest Fashion and some transitions in the band if you want to give some background on that.

Robert Ortiz: The band has been ever-evolving this is our 10th year.A band is hard thing to keep together especially rock ‘n’ roll. We just roll with the punches, the important thing is where do we go from here, we have a lot of love for what we’ve done with each album and each member and there’s a great history and we want to continue and make more history.

    etf2co

Jay Saint G: I see you guys are under Eleven Seven Records, who have been one of the more prominent rock labels in the last decade. How long have you guys been with Eleven Seven Records?

Both: I believe about a year and a half.

Thrasher Bell: They’re a good rock label.

Jay Saint G: If I may ask..you guys have been hitting radio hard with “Picture Perfect”, the latest single?

Robert Ortiz: Yea we hit it hard too with “One For The Money” and we figured it was the right time now to release “Picture Perfect” which is more of a ballad-type song. Its a somber song, not a depression song but deals with loss and having to overcome and learn from the things you may have missed out with the loved one during the time they spent with you. This year I lost my grandfather at the middle of our tour.

    Jay Saint G: Condolences.

Robert Ortiz: Thank you. It was a really difficult thing to deal with and playing that song really helps me deal with it. It’s what it’s all about so we are hoping that this song can get on radio stations and reach people’s ears and maybe help them through a tough time.

Jay Saint G: Yeah I saw the video, very moving, so if you haven’t seen it, check it on Escape the Fate Vevo on YouTube.

Thrasher Bell: Yeah check it out at escapethefate.com is a good source for all our videos and tour dates.

    etf3co

Jay Saint G: I have to ask, have you guys played central New York?

Thrasher Bell: Yeah, I played all over New York.

Jay Saint G: What about the great New York State Fair at all?

Robert Ortiz: No, this is the first time. We played Albany and Buffalo, but never Syracuse. This is my first time at the State Fair. I’m looking forward to our show, I’ve seen all the bands before so I might go around and enjoy all the sights and sounds of what’s going on today.

Jay Saint G: I believe this is the second or third time Uproar has been to the fair, and as a native of Syracuse myself, when you’re here at the fair, you got to indulge in some of those deep-fried Oreos and wine slushies and fried Twinkies.

Thrasher Bell: So this is where it’s at. My inner fat kid is stoked!

Jay Saint G: Gianelli Sausage, Dinosaur BBQ, Tully’s and their tenders.

Robert Ortiz: Ok so what’s the spot I have to hit?

Thrasher Bell: I heard they have fried chicken and Krispy Kreme.

Jay Saint G: Yes there’s a place called sticks and things, they have shark on stick, alligator on a stick, it’s a pretty big hit here along with Dinosaur BBQ. They’re famous here in Syracuse, Rochester, New York City, but there’s all those tiny places you gotta hit like Jim’s Fried Specialties, they’ll fry anything! I get fat just thinking about it. I think I clogged an artery just talking about it.

Robert Ortiz: So what you’re saying is this day is going to take four or five years off my life.

Jay Saint G: I certainly hope not.

Robert Ortiz: I hope so cuz it will be worth it cuz it sounds amazing.

Jay Saint G: I think the fair is the only thing that keeps central New York going, so I gotta ask, going back to music, and less food, what was some of your musical influences?

Thrasher Bell: I was influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Slash, Eddie Van Halen, then took off to progressive metal.

Robert Ortiz: I was raised as a metal head. My parents were rockers. They raised me with the classics like Ozzy and Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin to Aerosmith, Guns n’ Roses and Metallica and all that awesome ’80s metal and then I fell in love with the big four of thrash metal that was all my shit. And that’s what influenced me to play metal, and then led to some of the newer bands like Thrice and Avenged Sevenfold. All that stuff that was new when I was in high school. And, now it’s almost everything. If it touches me in some way and I like it and it finds its way into everything I do. I always go back to those classic fuckin’ rock and metal bands that will always be in my heart.

    etf8co

Thrasher Bell: Yeah, anything they play on 103.5/103.9 The Edge.

Jay Saint G: Yes, great stations. I always check it out whenever I travel to Albany I put it on The Edge. Another question, is there any music you guys are listening to right now that may be out of the ordinary?

Thrasher Bell: Interesting one, we are listening to Jay Z right now which is classic to me.

Robert Ortiz: To me if I haven’t heard it its new to me. I tend to dive into weird stuff that will make me think like why was this artist huge? And I just never heard them? Maybe it’s before my time or a scene I was never into, so ill go back , or if its Mexican music or fucking some pop artist or anything like that, I always dive into it, last few months its been fucking Vicente Fernández, the mariachi music. He’s the man. I’ve been jamming that, but it’s weird and I love it so I don’t care. Lately been getting into this new band that just signed with our label what are they called? They’re getting huge on the radio…what are they called?

    Thrasher Bell: Nothing More.

Robert Ortiz: Yeah, Nothing More. That’s one I’ve been listening to.

Jay Saint G: Yes, they just played a local festival here in Syracuse called 95x Fest. They absolutely killed it. Them and Otherwise blew all the other bands out of the water and that was my first exposure to Nothing More and they have been rapidly growing. It’s good to see that kind of music making that dominance to mainstream radio. It’s kind of refreshing to hear that.

    etf6co

Robert Ortiz: Yeah and that’s where I was coming from. We are definitely in the same vibe as them. They seem to somehow finally be breaking the mold of rock n roll radio has been the last 10 years. And I don’t think rock radio has taken a lot of chances, and they’re taking a big chance with them and it opens the doors for different bands that you know…that kids have been following for a long time. That style. That genre. Kids have been following, and that’s the direction rock has been going the last 10 years and now there’s finally one going balls to the wall with that sound and making that and growing that sound. And people may not have given that style of music that chance. In rock music they never would have given that chance back then and they are now.

Jay Saint G: Any chance we will see Escape the Fate and Nothing More tour together in the near future?

Thrasher Bell: I did tweet them that I was listening to their new record at the gym and they offered to do a little tour with us. So it’s a possibility.

Jay Saint G: We will keep our fingers crossed, and will be first to release that news.

Robert Ortiz: Honestly that tour would be awesome. We should call that the new face of rock radio

    Jay Saint G: The Revolution.

Robert Ortiz: Yeah, the rock revolution tour

    etf5co

Jay Saint G: That would be killer. I don’t want to keep you guys too much longer. Couple more questions; Any crazy stories from the tour so far?

Thrasher Bell: Godsmack threw an after party. It was cool to hang with those guys so they had a lot of cool stories to share.

Jay Saint G: Yeah, them and Buckcherry are the veterans of the tour so they must have crazy stories to share.

Robert Ortiz: Honestly nothing crazy yet. But that drum solo that Godsmack does, everyone needs to see that because it’s such a spectacle.

Jay Saint G: You guys have been together 10 years and growing strong. Do you guys have any advice for up and coming bands that just started and how they can make it in rock n roll?

Thrasher Bell: I would say try to find a unique voice. And stick to your guns and practice, practice, practice. You want to rehearse before your shows and play as many shows as possible. And that’s how you grow as a band.

Robert Ortiz: I would say follow what’s in your heart. If you like it, someone else will like it.

  • A Bluegrass Double Header with Railroad Earth and YMSB at Rochester’s Party in the Park

Rochester’s Party in the Park has returned to the original location of the concert series this summer and music lovers couldn’t be happier about the move. Music events are always well attended in the city center and with the spectacular lineup of artists, this summer of music has been a good one, especially with Railroad Earth and YMSB.

    Kelli_Marsh_Justin_YMSB-1016

With the recent surge in Bluegrass music in the last several years, Rochester bluegrass fans were in for a treat when Party in the Park served up a double-header of bluegrass with Railroad Earth and Yonder Mountain String Band as co-headliners of the Thursday night event. The show brought a full crowd to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at Manhattan Square Park for a night of dancing and local food from on-site food trucks. The energy was phenomenal, the music was on point and concert goers were delighted with the sounds of bluegrass music.

YMSB opened the night with a set list full of favorites like “My Gal” and jammy, out of the ordinary, fantastic “Only A Northern Song” – where the band proved that even without Jeff Austin, they still have undeniable energy that can’t be contained. With Austin’s departure the band had to look elsewhere for someone to fill that void and the result has been the addition of mandolin player Jacob Jolliff and Allie Kral on violin. Although Austin’s place could never be filled, the addition of Kral and Jolliff seems to be a comfortable fit.

    Kelli_Marsh_Justin_YMSB-1005

Highlights of the night included the addition of Allie Kral on violin with YMSB and two songs with RRE; after the departure of Jeff Austin, fans have been wondering which direction the band was going to go in with filling in his place, without replacing what Austin brought to the band. The result was a more than pleasant surprise with her addition.

I had the opportunity to speak with Kral after the show and I asked her about leaving Cornmeal and what it was like to be on stage with the boys from Yonder Mountain String Band and whether this was a permanent thing for her. With a giant smile on her face she explained how she had only been playing with Cornmeal for so long and now she’s learning  jazz and more bluegrass and it’s awesome; she went on to say that her husband was happy she was on tour and enjoying herself. When I asked if this might be a permanent gig for her she stated, “Not permanently but I’m happy to be here.”

  • Breaking Benjamin Ends Hiatus With Brand New Line Up

After being away for five years, everyone was wondering if Scranton, PA alternative hard rockers Breaking Benjamin would ever come back. Now the silence is broken, fans rejoice! Breaking Benjamin is officially back.

The news broke this week when Breaking Benjamin posted a new video on their Facebook that they have a completely new lineup. Frontman and lead song writer Ben Burnley is the only original member left in the band, which has been inactive since 2010 with Burnley dealing with health issues and was in a legal battle against former members Aaron Fink and Mark James regarding the release of the remixed version of “Blow Me Away” which was released as a single to radio when their greatest hits album was released.

breaking benjamin hiatusBurnley won the legal battle in April 2013 and announced plans to continue under the Breaking Benjamin name, playing a few acoustic performances later that year. No word on former members Aaron Fink and Mark James musical plans are. Former drummer Jeremy Hummer is currently touring with Creed frontman Scott Stapp, and former drummer Chad Szeliga spent a few years with Black Label Society.

breaking benjamin hiatusJoining Burnley in what is the third version of Breaking Benjamin are drummer Shaun Foist, bassist Aaron Bruch, former Red guitarist Jasen Rauch and ex-Adelitas Way guitarist Keith Wallen.

This marks the first time Breaking Benjamin as a five piece band.

Breaking Benjamin currently has no plans regarding a new album, touring plans, and hasn’t revealed what record label they are signed with. Breaking Benjamin spent their whole active career with Hollywood Records. The last Breaking Benjamin album, Dear Agony, came out in 2009.

Benjamin Burnley was originally in a band named Breaking Benjamin in 1998 that played “softer music” such as Weezer and The Beatles covers, and was “nothing like” subsequent lineups. The name originates from an incident in which Burnley broke a borrowed microphone, prompting its owner to retort, “Thanks to Benjamin for breaking my fucking mic.”

Expect more news on Breaking Benjamin shortly.

  • Queens of the Stone Age Paid a Visit to Rochester, NY

It’s 6:30 PM on a warm Friday night in downtown Rochester, NY. A lengthy line stretches down a sidewalk running parallel to the historic Main Street Armory; the venue that is about to house the alternative hard rock sound of California’s own Queens of the Stone Age. As this show was their only stop in Upstate, NY, there was certainly no shortage of eager fans packing the floor and balcony of the large performance room.

Taking the stage first was the freshly signed (Sony Music Entertainment) New York City trio, Unlocking the Truth. Considering  their roots come from setting up shop in Times Square, along with the fact this was only their third stage show ever, one would assume that a hint of nervousness would be obvious, especially when not one member of the band has hit their fourteenth birthday yet. Instead what the crowd got was a surprisingly heavy sound from the incredibly talented and comfortable teens on stage. The band was able to get the night started on the right foot, drawing cheers and immense applause from awe-stricken faces in the crowd. They continue their route to fame in the fall as they tour with rock veterans, Living Colour.

Next on stage was Aussie rocker and wife of Josh Homme, Queens of the Stone Age frontman, Brody Dalle. From start to finish in their ten-song set, the band delivered an edgy, up-tempo punk rock sound to the ever-growing audience. Along with a majority of newly written songs, Brody Dalle also threw in the single, “Coral Fang” from her prior musical project The Distillers. The fast paced sound that Brody Dalle delivered kept the anxious crowd energized and moving as they awaited the main act of the night. The band continued touring the United States through the end of July before they traveled across the pond to tour Europe during the month of August.

At 10:00 PM, the light panels at the back of the stage displayed a sixty-second countdown to which the ever-ready crowd counted along as the moment they had all been waiting for, finally became a reality. The large venue was sporting a packed balcony and limited free space on either side of the floor. As the band dove right into the popular hit “No One Knows” there were few heads not banging along to the music as well as fists stuck straight up into the air demonstrating a love for the ones on stage. As the show continued, it was hard not to appreciate the amount of work that went into stage and lighting setup. With elaborate overhead and backing lights, the mood of each song could be captured by different colors and light speeds. After powering through six or seven fast-paced, in-your-face fan favorites, Josh Homme took the piano to slow it down for their song, “Like Clockwork”. The crowd stayed rowdy and slowly more lighters than camera phones began to prevail from the sea of people. They did not keep the mood mellow for long as they revamped the tempo with more crowd favorites like “Sick, Sick, Sick” and “3’s and 7’s”.

The Queens of the Stone Age were admired as kings of rock n roll for the night, from beginning to end, keeping the audience jumping and cheering with no signs of stopping. The sweat-soaked band members finished their set, leaving the audience begging for more. As they walked off the stage, the overwhelming cheers begging for an encore began growing louder and louder. Gone for no more than two minutes, the band took the stage, beers in hand, welcomed back by the adoring fans whose cheers now reached a new peak. The three-song encore satisfied the crowd above and beyond what they could have hoped for, and shortly after the band left the stage for good, the lights came on and the venue was clear of the majority of people. Queens of the Stone Age put on not only a terrific musical show, but created an experience for their fans that left ears ringing and heads pounding for the ride home. The band continues its tour throughout August as they head to Norway to appease even more insatiable fans

  • Origin Tour Kicks Off in Clifton Park

The All Things Dead Tour kicked off in Clifton Park, NY on Wednesday, Aug. 13. Promising to be one of the heaviest tours this fall, it is a month-long assault on the United States and Canada. Fresh off of the Summer Slaughter tour, Origin headlines an impressive lineup, and this first show at Trickshots Billiards started with a bang.

The first band on the stage was the only local support, Declension, playing practically right in their own backyard. Having shared the stage with bands like Dying Fetus already in their short career,  they showed no nerves warming up the already sixty plus crowd. Starting with an epic intro, it foreshadowed the five-piece band’s talented dual guitar harmonies in later songs. Crushing riffs and old school metal guitar solos, reminiscent of King Crimson, made for a good start on the night.

Next up was Texas band Abolishment of Flesh, who wasted no time diving into their brand of southern extreme metal. The bass and guitar launched into tapping riffs and the singer showed an impressive range from guttural low screams to almost black metal highs. They employed interesting musical breaks in a few of their songs, which was a little surprising, but worked very well with their overall sound.

Trickshots has been putting on consistently good shows, along with Joelggernaut Productions, and this night was no different. A big, heavy sound and a great light show highlighted the talent on stage, and the bar was slinging drinks and food at a rapid pace. Beyond Creation, hailing from Montreal, Canada, was the first band of the night to draw a big crowd right to the front of the stage. The attendance was steady from the time the doors opened at 6pm, and they were all happy to be there. Lots of familiar faces from the Upstate metal scene, and also many new fans as well, giving the bar and the merchandise booths a lot of business.

The first two bands on the night were showered with impressive strobe lights, to accent their brutal music. Beyond Creation projected talent and precision, commanding the stage in a hard red light, allowing their music to speak volumes. Two eight string guitars lent to the deliberate sonic destruction they were dealing to the audience, and the crowd response was just as huge. Parallels could be made between the tight, honed presence of Cryptopsy and the intensity of Lamb of God.

All of the great moments of the night so far could barely prepare the crowd for the incredible energy of King Parrot. All the way from the other side of the world, Australia, they joked at one point that they thought they might be in Billiards, New York. But, this was actually their second time in the states, and definitely feel at home being on stage in America, or more likely, anywhere. Toddy, the singer, strutted on the stage shirtless and began to whip the crowd into a frenzy, running to the back and the front of the club with his wireless microphone. It was a sight to behold, and it felt much like catching a crazy punk or metal band at CBGB’s in late ’70s. They instigated the first ever Wall of Death at Trickshots, and the audience happily obliged. A cross between Rob Halford and Iggy Pop, the singer brought everything he had and more, at one point jumping on the bar in the middle of a song. Their unique brand of heavy thrash metal and punk impressed the entire club and set the stage for the headliner.

Origin just released their new album, Omnipresent, to great reviews from fans and critics. Fitting nicely into their own headlining tour, they were poised to bring their special brand of shredding death metal to Clifton Park. Exploding onto the stage with a relentless onslaught of metal, they drew the biggest screams of the night. The also had the best mix from the soundboard, allowing the audience to really hone in on the intricate music they produce. John Longstreth, revered by many as one of the top drummers in the metal genre, kept the entire set in perfect time with crushing percussive energy. Both John, and the singer, Jason Keyser,  call Upstate New York their home, and it was a treat for the crowd to see this band in this area. Jason led a three-part vocal assault that mesmerized the crowd as well as riled them up. They had incredible energy and an amazing stage presence that even allowed for Jason to crowd surf at one point. Being a weekday show, it abruptly ended at 11PM, with Origin possibly cutting their set short. But no one in attendance was unhappy with all of the incredible talent presented before them, getting what they played for and more.

Origin is a very hardworking band, and headlining a tour like this shows all the fruits of their intense labour. For the rare time they, and the rest of the bands, graced the stage in Upstate New York, it was definitely a show that the people who were in attendance will wear that like a badge of honor. For anyone reading this in cities where this tour might be making a stop, it is a heavy metal experience that is not to be missed.

  • Rock’s Newest Stars, Nothing More, Offers High-Energy Performance

When Jonny Hawkins was cut from his San Antonio elementary school chorus, he adopted the belief that he couldn’t sing. But he loved music, and he isn’t a quitter, so he turned to drums. By the time he was in middle school, he had joined with Daniel Oliver and Mark Vollelunga to form the band Nothing More. As the group developed and began to seriously consider a career as a rock band, Hawkins began to question the life-long belief that he couldn’t sing. Questioning that belief allowed Hawkins to uncover a surprising and strong talent. Today he is lead singer of Nothing More, and the band is working its way to the top of the charts.

The idea of questioning beliefs is the theme of Nothing More’s 2014 self-titled album. The band performed to a small but enthusiastic crowd at Upstate Concert Hall on Aug. 15, 2014. Using their own experiences as inspiration, songs like “This is the Time (Ballast)” encourages listeners to open their eyes and not be blind to reality. “Mr. MTV” is about greed and gluttony, pointing out a very real problem in America today, which is an insatiable need (want) for material things that don’t truly satisfy.

Nothing More’s music and message were received well by fans. Almost everyone crowded towards the stage once the band came out, leaving many open bar stools (which is extremely rare at this venue). The band brought on Paul O’Brien for drums, allowing Hawkins to move to the front of the stage as lead vocalist. It’s great fun to watch him bang on his small auxiliary drum-set, but even when he isn’t drumming, he clearly wants to bang on something.

Hawkins wasn’t the only one with energy though. All the guys were into the performance. Of note was the inclusion of an interesting prop used to mount the bass guitar and allowed Hawkins, Oliver and Vollelunga to play the instrument together. The choreographed performance of “Salem” was also high energy, giving all four musicians the chance to drum together.

The opening acts, too, had a lot of energy. Into Shadow, an Oneonta-based band, opened the night with a distinctly ’90s sound. Sleepwave, a new group led by Spencer Chamberlain, former lead singer of the immensely popular Christian metal band, Underoath, is a very interesting blend of influences and styles. They mix ’80s headbanging with sounds reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails, Green Day, and Jane’s Addiction. Chamberlain’s dramatic performance makes it appear as if he was in severe emotional pain, but that passion does keep eyes on the stage.

All three bands have upcoming tour dates; Nothing More is continuing on a very ambitious schedule well into October.

  • Hearing Aide: King 810 ‘Memoirs Of A Murderer’

king-810-memoirs-of-a-murdererFlint, Michigan metallers King 810 have released their first full length album Memoirs Of A Murderer released by Roadrunner Records. A band, who are no stranger to arrests and controversy. Machine Head’s Rob Flynn has praised this band for their balls to the wall violent ways – But does Memoirs Of A Murderer live up to expectations?

My immediate impression with opening track “Killem All” is that this band is a mix between hardcore and death metal; if that makes any sense. It’s very aggressive sounding with very violent lyrics. The album does maintain a consistent theme with the whole “I wanna kill you” attitude that is present in almost every song. This band sends a message that they have been around violence all their life and want to translate it using metal music.

The album has aggressive electric guitar sound until the fourth track where it briefly changes pace with an acoustic but haunting sounding song “Take It”. Then the next track goes heavy again with “Fat Around The Heart” by delivering the message that the band has been around so much violence and wants to tell the listener not to try to live that kind of lifestyle because you won’t make it. Vocalist David Gunn goes spoken-word with “Anatomy 1-2”  which is a good change of pace so the album does not sound all the same.

“Eyes” is an impressive track. The bands lyrical style changes as well as musically and goes into a melodic direction showing that the band has depth.

“Desperate Lover” goes back to the heavy and violent direction. Anyone that has ever fantasized about killing an ex-lover would love this song. Moving forward, we get another heavy track with “Boogeymen” and another acoustic track with “Devil Don’t Cry” before we get another spoken word track with “Anatomy 1-3”. The rest of the album continues with the heavy tracks before it finally closes with acoustic closing track “State of Nature”.

Overall, a solid debut. Simple but catchy rifts throughout, very violent but memorable lyrics.  This band is the next controversial band, expect them to ride the wave of bad publicity, but their talent can’t be overlooked.

You can purchase the album here.

KEY TRACKS: Fat Around The Heart, Eyes, Desperate Lover

  • Billy Idol Album and Book Out Soon

British punk rock legend, Billy Idol is busy putting the finishing touches on what will be his eighth studio release.

Once released later this year, Kings & Queens of the Underground will be Idol’s first release in eight years.   The album features Steve Stevens, his long-time lead guitarist, Stephen McGrath on bass and Billy Morrison on guitar, with Eric Eldenius on drums and Paul Trudeau on keyboards.

The 58-year old has kept his fans abreast of his on-going plans on his Twitter page.  Such plans not only include the upcoming album, but an autobiography as well.

The autobiography, Dancing With Myself, promises to discuss his early days as front man of Generation X, to his life on top of the world during the 1980s.

“I am hopelessly divided between the dark and the good,  the rebel and the saint, the sex maniac and the monk, the poet and the priest, the demagogue and the populist.” stated Idol, through a press release posted on his official website. “Pen to paper, I am putting it all down, every bit from the heart. I am going out on a limb here, so watch my back.”

Release dates have not been announced as of date.  But, unofficial word through sources in the United Kingdom suggest that both the album and book will hit the shelves shortly before Idol tours Europe in November. His website also alludes to the possibility of a larger world tour.

This is the latest Billy Idol album since Happy Holidays in 2006.

  • New Music Releases To Be Moved From Tuesdays To Fridays?

How do you defend yourself against pirates? By moving to Friday apparently. According to sources, in order to reduce illegal downloading of music, leaks, and pirating, Billboard is looking to set a global release day to Friday for all new music releases worldwide.

The whole idea came about when Australia saw success by moving new releases to Friday. In recent years, music has already hit torrent sites before albums even reach their street release dates. Especially in the U.S.

According to Consequence of Sound and Ultimate Guitar, sources say the policy could go into effect as early as July 2015, but others suggest that it hasn’t been agreed upon completely by everyone in the industry. But there can be setbacks.

“This global streetdate is necessary for the industry but unfortunately it will be awkward for the physical retailers to change their ways of doing business,” one label executive told Billboard.

Personally, this makes Fridays even better. Not only is it payday for most hardworking Americans, now they can have something to look forward to investing to when they get paid.   I’m sure there will be plenty people who would much prefer to keep it on Tuesdays.

What do you think? Keep it Tuesdays or embrace the change for Friday? Comment below.
