  • The Great NY State Fair Starts With a Bang

Starting The Great NY State Fair has started off with a bang, and some lightning, Kellie Pickler took the stage at Chevy Court to a packed crowd holding umbrellas and wearing ponchos.  These hardcore country fans were in for a treat at the Fair’s first free show.  Full of charm and talent, this young lady brought sunshine to the audience as she sang, shared stories, and gave an amazing performance to kick off the fair’s first show of the year.

Randy Houser – Grandstands Day 1

DAY ONE – Rain or Shine, The Show Must Go On

The one thing that stood out about Kellie was how personable she was with the audience.  Whether it was waving to those shouting her name, holding up signs, or just waving her way, she made sure she acknowledged each and every one with a smile and a wave as though seeing an old friend once again.  She even signed several autographs during her encore number.  My first time and definitely not the last time I see this country girl perform.

Day  1 at The Great NY State Fair was chock full of country superstars.  Country music fans hit the lottery with the Grandstand lineup Thursday evening with one of country music’s most loved entertainers, Brad Paisley headlining and he brought along some very special guests, Charlie Worsham, Leah Turner, and Randy Houser to join him.

I had the opportunity to cover these four performers earlier this year for NYS Music at the Taste of  Country Music Festival down at Hunter Mountain in the beautiful Catskills.  I immediately spotted Charlie Worsham out in the crowd doing what I loved about him most. He was down in the audience just hanging out and talking with all his fans, signing things, and being incognito right up until the time he put his earpieces in and jumped up on the platform and began singing and showing this audience just what he’s about.  This young man is one hell of a guitar and banjo player.  Sporting his signature orange converse, which he claimed he wore in honor of our Orangemen, he came right out in to the audience to pick and shred number after number.  He told the crowd, “You may not know me….yet,” “yet” being the key word in that sentence as once you see Charlie in person, he’s really hard to forget.  Yes Charlie, I was there for your first experience crowd surfing.  It was epic and I have photos to prove it.

Immediately following Charlie was one of country music’s on the rise female artists, Leah Turner.  The one thing that strikes me about Leah Turner is her strength.  Her voice is strong, her presence is strong, and her impression is lasting.  Rocking the audience and turning heads, the amazing performer is quickly making her mark in the country music business as a force to be reckoned with.

The next artist opening up for Brad was Randy Houser.  I was happily anticipating this particular artist because this would be the first time I saw Randy perform his full show.  Randy’s musical talent was put to the test this past June when on the way to the Taste of Country Music Festival, his bus broke down somewhere along the Pennsylvania highway.  Making a split second decision, Randy and keyboardist, John Henry Trinko, packed it up and headed up through the mountains literally arriving five minutes before he had to go on.  Playing an all acoustic set that was spectacular, I couldn’t possibly imagine how he would top that show.  Well, the bus arrived this time, and he brought it.  With a full band behind him, Randy whipped the audience into a frenzy, leaving it all out on the stage.  One word,  sensational.  So happy I was able to see and hear him both full on with a full band and then stripped down acoustically.  When it boils down to it, he is truly an amazing musician and vocalist, and talent such as that is unmistakable.

With the audience primed and ready to roll, the main event began.  The one thing I must say about Brad Paisley’s show, is that it’s two shows in one.  The perfectly choreographed video that plays behind Brad as he plays hit after hit, is spectacular and puts this show on a whole different level.  I should expect no less, as Brad is truly on a different level.  Brad is and amazing vocalist, but is also one amazing guitarist, I must add.  I think it’s the one part of the show I look forward to the most.  Shredding out like the rock star he is, you can’t help but love the new direction country music has been taking, getting back to their southern country rock and roll roots.  For those of you who haven’t followed Brad and the comical tweets of late, Brad has been mischievous to say the least.  With a new album, Moonlight In The Trunk, ready to be released this week, Brad took matters into his own hands allowing his fans bits and pieces of the album prior to the release date and against the wishes of his record label. This release was extremely important to Brad as his last album didn’t have the intended effect it was supposed to have.  Brad felt that taking control and releasing on his terms would accomplish not only the message he wanted to send his fans, but thank his fans for being supportive over the years. Have to say, the comical scuttlebutt between Brad and his label was fun to watch unfold, almost making you wonder if it was a practical joke.  In the end, Brad got his wishes did things his way, while the label did things their way and invited the  fans to thank him personally by leaking his real email address.  In the end, Brad, Label, and Fans all were happy.

DAY TWO – The Show that Could Possibly Break All Records

With Day One in the record books as an amazing start to the 2014 Fair, Day Two was bound to possibly be one of those days that beat some records.  There are several factors that would assist in making a day at the Fair a record-breaking day….cooperating weather…special events going on…special day for select groups…or the acts at the stages…yep it was the act going on at Chevy Court at 8PM that would definitely shatter some records this day.  This artist was one of those names that would surely draw a full paying crowd at the Grandstand, but instead the Fair treated their attendees to this act for free.

The Fair treated fairgoers to Jason Derulo.  I am still waiting to see if Jason was able to break the Bruno Mars attendance back in 2011 of 35,000.  Looking at the crowd that evening, I believe it may have come close.  Attendees began saving their seats before the 2pm Smashmouth show, and by the time 6pm came along, the inner area was cordoned off.  This wasn’t just an entertainer coming out to the middle of the stage and singing.  This show had everything.  Jason Derulo is already known for his amazing musical talents as a vocalist, but until you see him live, you can’t ascertain his true talents.  He came out with a full entourage of professional dancers as he commanded that stage keeping up with each and every step they laid down.  All I kept thinking of was how much he reminded me of Michael Jackson, with the voice and the moves.  He definitely has something special.  Dancing With The Stars would be handing him that trophy for sure if they included him in one their upcoming seasons.

DAY THREE – Mr. 305 Hit’s the 315- Everyone Loves Some Bacon, Brothers That Is

As Day Three began, the NY State Fair included two amazing shows at the Chevy Court stage.  The 2PM show was Sean Kingston, which I unfortunately missed, as I’m still figuring out how to be in two places at once.  However I was able to take in their 8PM show with The Bacon Brothers Band.  What an amazing group of performers they were.  Rocking with a bluegrass, country, jazzy, pop vibe this group were thoroughly entertaining and very talented with a big variety of instrumentation which included various percussion, harmonica, mandolin, electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards, etc.  Was so pleased they made Central New York one of their stops on their summer tour schedule.

At the Grandstands on Day Three we had Mr. 305 himself, Pitbull.  This distinguished performer is hugely talented and one of the best business men I have ever seen in the music business, taking the business by storm and branding himself as a worldwide superstar.  He has appeared in numerous collaborations, taken home award after award (including a Grammy) and built himself an international empire in a ten year span. Taking the stage in a tailored suit and sunglasses, his charm, style, and charisma spilled over into the audience as they screamed and cheered his name.  Singing hit after hit, Pitbull had a stronghold on the audience from the moment he came out.

As NYS Music covers the Great New York State Fair, we would like to point out a few notables to make sure you take the time to see.  I always have loved the 25 cent milk, the butter sculpture, and all the animals, this year my new discovery was the butterfly exhibit.  For a single $1, you can enter a tent filled with the most beautiful butterflies as they twitter and land on you.  Was an amazing experience and such a cool find right inside the Horticulture Building.  Oh, and while you’re there don’t forget to get your $1 baked potato.

Looking forward to the next three days there,  the musical acts, foods, and adventures you too can share at the worlds first and best the Great NY State Fair.

  • Lionel Richie Brings the Party to Saratoga Performing Arts Center

As one of the final stops on the All The Hits, All Night Long Tour, a tour that spanned the world from North America to Asia, India, and down under, it was certainly an extreme honor to be able to cover Lionel Richie for NYS Music at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on July 25.

    lionel richie saratoga
Lionel Richie – Saratoga Performing Arts Center

Lionel Richie truly needs no introduction, but humor me as his career deservedly should be applauded.  Throughout his years as both a member of the Commodores and as a solo artist, Lionel Richie is and has achieved….

    • 100 million albums sold worldwide
    • Oscar winner
    • 5 time Grammy winner
    • 16-time American Music Award winner
    • Golden Globe winner
    • 5 time People’s Choice Award winner
    • A World Music Lifetime Achievement Award recipient
    • A Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame
    • An ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award recipient
    • A United Negro College Fund Achievement Award recipient
    • A Goldene Kamera Award winner. Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee
    • Tuskegee Institute Honorary Doctor of Music Degree
    • Germany’s ECHO Award for Lifetime Achievement
    • TV Land Icon Award recipient
    • Hong Kong’s Rojo Award winner
    • Alabama Music Hall of Fame Inductee
    • Italy’s San Remo Festival Lifetime Achievement Award winner
    • World Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award Winner
    • National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Governors Award winner
    • One on only two songwriters to achieve #1 records for 9 straight years.  The other accomplished songwriter?  Irving Berlin

Opening the evening clad in red and hot, hot, hot was CeeLo Green and his amazing band.  Belting out tunes, performing and dancing as hot as their costumes, this group of entertainers sure turned up the heat to prepare the audience for the main event on this summer evening. Not that Lionel needed any warm up, but just the same Ceelo definitely provided an audience geared up to go and ready to dance all night long.

This tour was named appropriately, All the Hits, All Night Long, as Lionel took the stage and commanded the love and admiration of fans that span generations belting out hit after hit and inciting the audience into dancing all night long.  Just saying, ‘He was spectacular’ doesn’t begin to describe what I witnessed on July 25th at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.  He took the stage and from the moment he began interacting with the audience I witnessed a tidal wave of sheer enjoyment from VIP fans in the front rows of the pit to the those seated in the balcony and out on the lawn.  He forewarned the audience that as he performed throughout the evening, memories would flood back to a place you were when you first heard the song; a time you recalled that marked special meanings in your life, and perhaps install the courage of karaoke as each member in the audience became a singer, singing along with each and every song.

It was true.  It happened.  As he belted out his ballads, I was back in high school at the prom dancing to “There Times A Lady” and on the dance floor taking my first dance as a wife to “Truly” and back in my first car with the windows rolled down singing at the top of my lungs to “Brick House” –  as I thought I was the best backup singer ever.  He did transform me back to those moments, the audience did sing along with each and every song, and I must admit, I did too.  What’s amazing is although I aged, he didn’t age a bit.  His voice was pure, his performance agile and tireless, and his ability to connect with his audience spot on.  Perhaps he drank some of that mineral water years ago from the springs in Saratoga, giving him the ability to share his music forever with his fans.  His secret I wish to know, because Lionel is timeless, his music timeless, and his energy tireless.

Also requiring applause is Lionel’s band.  Lionel is such an amazing performer, he could take a microphone out to the middle of a stage and just sing acoustically without any problems and rock the house.  However, with Ben Mauro on lead guitar, Ethan Farmer on Bass, Dino Soldo on Saxophone and Harmonica, Oscar Seaton on Drums, and Chuckii Booker on Keyboards, these five powerhouses turn up the volume on this show and bring the party all night long with Lionel.  Shredding alongside Lionel throughout the night, hanging upside down off the piano, and rocking all over the stage the band truly were the cherry on top of this amazing sundae performance – okay it was Friday, but you know what I mean.

With a few new dates being announced on Lionel’s website, please take a moment to see if and when you have the opportunity to see his next show, I give it an 11 on a scale of one to 10, and 6 out of 5 stars.  That’s allowed, right?  Nonetheless, I think you get my point, if the opportunity presents itself to take in one of his shows, I highly recommend it.  Tell them NYS Music sent you.

  • Dierks Bentley Announces Utica, NY as Part of Second Leg of #RISERTOUR

Included in the first round of announced cities for Dierks Bentley’s second leg of his Risertour is Utica.  In a genius of a marketing concept, fans are asked to unlock the cities by sharing the announcement.  As the percentage of shares increase, so do the list of cities until all cities and details are announced.

    Dierks Bentley
    Dierks Bentley

Dierks Bentley will be joined on this leg of the tour by Randy Houser, Eric Paslay, and Tim Hicks.  Fans in attendance at the Taste of Country Music Festival this past June at Hunter Mountain saw first hand the amazing job Randy Houser did in the 9th hour, putting on an acoustic show as his bandmates sat with the broken down bus on the side of a Pennsylvanian highway.  Also performing at the Taste of Country was Eric Paslay who is quickly making a name for himself in country music with hits such as “Song About A Girl” and “Friday Night” and wowing the audiences.  Canadian country star, Tim Hicks, will join the group north of the Mason-Dixon line and will learn first hand just how much these northerners love their country music and these superstars.

  • Enter The Haggis Once Again Tops it off at Saranac Brewery Thursdays

Enter the Haggis has become a well-loved tradition and crowd favorite at Saranac Thursdays lineup.  The lads always draw a sell out crowd, and this year’s event continued the custom.

Enter The Haggis - Saranac Thursdays
Enter The Haggis – Saranac Thursdays

These five musicians make up one of the most dedicated bands I’ve had the privilege to meet and work with over the last few years.  They are always giving back to their fan base, lovingly referred to as Haggis Heads.  One of the first bands I know to successfully take over their own management by using Kickstarter and Pledgemusic.com, they are now three albums into making music on their own terms, exploring new avenues and pushing their limits musically and creatively.  This is what makes Enter The Haggis so amazing; They are never stagnant and always looking ahead to new creative ways to bring messages of love, life, and family to their listeners.

Enter The Haggis - Saranac Thursdays
Enter The Haggis – Saranac Thursdays

Anxiously anticipating their upcoming release of their latest project, The Penny Black Project, this album is going to be solely for their fans, as the music has all been inspired by the stories submitted by Haggis Heads. This band continues to push their limits and stretching their capabilities to bring about the most diverse sounds. Not categorizing them into any one genre but giving them a unique mix of all their influences over the years.  I think this is what is most appealing to me as a music lover.  Their lyrics tell a story, the music accentuates their mediums, their sound is never the same – they evolve. Over the years this is what translates into musical longevity.  Times change, current events change, technology changes, and music should follow and evolve in the same manner.  Enter The Haggis identifies with change and embraces the opportunity to bring to their fans a piece of themselves.

Enter The Haggis - Saranac Thursdays
Enter The Haggis – Saranac Thursdays

As they took the stage at Saranac, the audience was ready to party along with the band as they played some of their best-loved songs.  It never ceases to amaze me how this band can pump up an audience to the point of frenzy with “Lannigan’s Ball” and “Gasoline”. Those numbers incite an almost riot and singing and dancing each and every time they play them.  However it was their encore number, “Long Way Home”, that left me speechless this time as it’s flavor was a mixture of sounds of celtic, bluegrass, and folk instrumentally and lyrically.  Not sure as I’ve ever heard them play that one before and I must add, “Wow!”  Hoping this is part of the new sound they are turning towards in the impending album, because it’s uniquely distinctive and appealing.

As always, Enter The Haggis’s performance at Saranac was amazing to say the least, and the CNY fan base just absolutely loves them.  Stay tuned to NYS Music in the near future for a preview and interview with the band about their new project and what fans reactions are.  If interested in supporting the project please visit their site for more information on their new album and upcoming shows.

  • The Great New York State Fair – There Is a Reason It’s Called “Great”

This year’s Great New York State Fair is adding up to be one spectacular event with headlining shows at the Grandstand and Chevy Court venues, while the regional stages offer a diverse mix for music lovers of all genres. Taking place for 12 days and nights – August 21-September 1, 2014.

The Great NY State Fair is appropriately named as Syracuse, NY was the site of the nations very first State Fair back in 1841. The fair traveled for the next 47 years amongst New York State cities until finding its final home in Syracuse in 1890; when the Syracuse Land Co. donated its current 100 acre property. Originally held to promote agricultural improvement and local farm and home, the fair has evolved over the years to feature not only these items, but also to promote both local musicians and national musicians as they celebrate traditional customs and cultures of regional areas and attract families to the event. In 1972, Sonny & Cher’s performance broke all concert attendance records, holding the record until 2009 when Shinedown’s concert of 15,000 strong exceeded the record, only to be ousted once again in 2011 when Bruno Mars drew more than 35,000 concert goers to Chevy Court. Can any acts beat that attendance record this year? It could happen I believe with the stellar line up being offered.

In addition to multitude of fair like attractions; i.e. livestock, carnival rides, competitions for home-made goods and wares, and of course fried everything, the New York State Fair also offers five stages throughout the fairgrounds featuring the most diverse collection of music and entertainment for all attendees.  The State Fair Grandstand is the largest venue hosting the powerhouse performers and events each evening, while Chevy Court is an attendee favorite as huge acts come to perform for the fairgoers free of charge right inside the main gates twice a day. The Midway Music Series features acts on the west side of the fairgrounds over by the Midway carnival rides showcasing national and regional performers of all sorts throughout the entire day, while the Regional Artists Variety Stage features special regional artists and acts from our great state. The Empire Theater Stage is located inside at the Art & Home Center and features a multitude of talent from special speakers, to performers, and dancers all day long inside the cover of the Art & Home Center Building.

NYS Music Music Guide will be there throughout the week to highlight as many shows as possible for our readers. With acts all over the grounds at the same time, our team will try to bring to you a diverse mix of national, regional, and local entertainment throughout the week with sneak peek photos, social media uploads, and a full review of shows, interviews, and photo galleries we are able to document.

Jason Aldean/Florida Georgia Line/Tyler Farr -Wow is all I can say about this trio of acts.  Some of the biggest names in country music on the stage on the same night?  Each should be headlining their own shows, and together they are a winning trifecta. Definite winning bet.

Kid Rock with Big Smo – This multi talented musician has made leaps across genres bringing to audiences everywhere an amazing eclectic sound.  Opening with Big Smo, who is categorized as an american country rap musician, what an awesome combo.

Pitbull – The 315 can’t wait to welcome the 305 to the state fair this year as this international superstar fires up the stage at the fair.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts – Nothing is cooler than a rocking chick with a guitar, and Joan Jett is the epitome of rock and roll.

Angie Johnson – Up and coming country artist Angie Johnson is best known as part of Cee Lo Green’s team on The Voice, but what makes this young lady so special is her dedication to her country as part of our military.

Eli Young Band – This highly popular country band has been topping the charts over the past eight years, and for those who have not had a chance to experience the  Eli Young Band, you are in for a treat.

Uncle Kracker – Hugely popular country musician, Uncle Kracker is one of those musicians that can leap across genres with the ease of spiderman.  Love that voice.

MKTO – These two young men share their talents in not only stage but screen.  Emerging pop duo hit the charts already with “Classic”, can’t wait to see what else is on their new album.

Phillip Phillips – Hard to believe Phillip Phillips just won Idol only two years ago.  Since that time he’s released two albums hitting the charts and making his way in the business as a veteran now.

Barenaked Ladies – This Canadian rock band certainly has a way of bringing to life their music in a fun-loving, quick quitted, fast paced manner, that makes it fun to experience.

Smash Mouth – California-based rock band, Smash Mouth has a unique way of bringing to life covers as well as their own original music that has an effect on your feet that can’t stop them moving around in time to the music.  Strange…very strange.

The Bacon Brothers – Okay, who’s with me on this one?….Is there anything better than Bacon?  Okay maybe two of them then.  I stand corrected.

Sean Kingston – This dynamic Jamaican based musician brings the tropics together with the asphalt jungle mixing music in a way that moves his audiences.

Herman’s Hermits Starring Peter Noone – Original lead vocalist will bring audience members back to their 60’s roots with hits such as “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” and “There’s A Kind of Hush”

Bowser’s Rock and Roll Party – Like to travel back to the ’50s Bowser certainly has a way of transporting you with his Rock and Roll Party

Night Ranger – Turning the volume back up with Night Ranger is just what the audience will love as they belt out hits such as “Sister Christian”

Chef Anne Burrell – Originally from the central New York region (Cazenovia), it’s a pleasure to welcome back Food Network host and great Chef Anne Burrell.

The Neighbourhood – It’s fitting to have the band who plays “Sweater Weather” come to upstate NY and share their talents. We promise to keep it cool without the need for any sweaters.

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes – Jersey based rock group, this band has been making music with the likes of Steve Van Zandt and the Boss and Jon Bon Jovi over the years.

Bell Biv Devoe – When talking about R&B and Hip Hop in the 90’s you can’t help but think of Bell Biv Devoe.  Again, it does something to your feet, where twitching begins and movement takes over.

John Kay & Steppenwolf – Classic rock at it’s best, these guys were “Born to Be Wild” and CNY is ready to be wild right along with them.

The Doobie Brothers – No introduction is needed for this group.  This group is considered timeless rock, and deservedly so.

  • The Civil Wars Close a Chapter

Together since 2008, Joy Williams and John Paul White – known to their fans as The Civil Wars – have meshed their talents in a seamlessly beautiful quilt of music.  It’s sad however that the two who work so creatively together to produce the most amazing music, could not mesh these notes together to continue the upward motion this duo was on.  Having just won the 2014 Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, it seemed unlikely that they would soon be announcing their parting of ways.

In comments posted to their official webpage yesterday Williams and White gave their statements to fans, along with a free download as a thank you for their support over the years.

Joy Williams comments, “I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least. JP is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together. I sincerely hope that ‘You Are My Sunshine’ will be accepted as a token of my gratitude for every single person that has supported our duo throughout the years. I’m so thankful and my heart is full. Looking ahead, I’m excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this difficult transition. I’ve loved being back in the studio, and have missed performing live. I look forward to seeing you soon.”

John Paul adds, “I would like to express sincere thanks to all who were a part of the arc of The Civil Wars—from the beginning, to the end, and all points in between. My deep appreciation goes out to all who supported, disseminated, and enjoyed the music. Whatever shape or form the next chapter takes, thanks for being a large part of this one.”

    10406663_10152505734921789_7652211736328699154_n

Although short-lived in the eye of the storm, the talents of these four-time Grammy winning artists have forever created an impression on the world of folk and country music and the fans that adore them.

In a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone, Williams explained that although they were in tune in the studio, the multitude of hours they spent together touring had taken a toll on their friendship and professional relationship.  Having taken a hiatus in 2011 after recording what would be their third and final album, the two couldn’t find their ways past their differences and have now announced they will be parting ways for good.

  • Brantley Gilbert Turns the Turning Stone Bottoms Up

Brantley Gilbert certainly brought his ‘A Game’ when he visited Central, New York July 10 at the Turning Stone Casino. This Georgia born entertainer, recently awarded the coveted ACM 2013 Top New Male Artists award, has certainly been busy over the last few years cranking out hit songs for himself and other Nashville artists. Touring with the likes of Willie Nelson, Eric Church, Toby Keith, and Tim McGraw.

Recently in Upstate, New York as one of the many top-notch country performers at the Taste of Country Music Festival at Hunter Mountain, concert goers got a small taste of the no holds barred artist that writes and plays from the heart sharing from real life experiences. This young man makes no excuses for who he is, what he believes in, or how he looks. He’s been labeled a bad boy of country music, however his polite persona shines through to give you a hint that there is so much more to this artist than what’s on the surface.

Opening for Brantley was newcomer Brandon Lay who took over the stage and warmed up this audience; winning over new fans left and right.  Covering original songs of his own and covers like a pro, it was our honor to give him a warm CNY welcome to our neck of the woods, with the hopes of returning again one day soon on his own headline tour.

I was really looking forward to seeing this rebels full show, having seen Brantley just a few weeks prior at the Taste of Country Music Festival, and he absolutely didn’t disappoint. As a performer, it’s great to have hit songs to belt out to an audience, but it’s the delivery that makes the show. It’s the opening number that pumps up the audience and begins the evening, it’s the interaction with the audience as the performer is singing, and it’s the momentum that builds as each song plays into the next one. Brantley has an innate ability to deliver these critical aspects that hook his audience and reels them in number after number. His opening number and accompanying video totally delivered this one-two-punch that hooked the audience, built them up to an expectation of greatness, and delivered from that point on. No matter how much of a showman this young man is, you cannot mistake his talent in songwriting. It’s his songwriting that truly shines bright amongst the chains and tough exterior, as he shares in each number a piece of who he is and how he perceives his life experiences.

Surrounded by some of the top-notch musicians in the business, his band perfectly accompanies Brantley on each number delivering the ambience in one killer set. With Patrick Stevens on guitar and background vocals, Jonathan Waggoner on bass and background vocals, Ben Sims on drums and percussion, BJ Golden on the mandolin ,acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, and background vocals, and Noah Henson rounding them out on rhythm guitar and background vocals, these guys commanded the stage meshing perfectly together to bring the show all together and build up that electric feel that delivers this show over the top.

Brantley Gilbert is a force to be reckoned with as country music switches tides to deliver an eclectic sound that mimics a mixture of country, bluegrass, and rock and roll. Perhaps it’s this mixture and the fact that Brantley doesn’t sway away from his goal to deliver his sound his way that has hooked me as one of his BG Nation members. Coming back through NY August 22n to the Watertown Fairgrounds, it is my suggestion if you love the new direction of country rock you definitely need to take the time and the ride up north to see Brantley.

  • 93Q Summer Jam Rocks Papermill Island

For the sixth year now 93Q has celebrated the beginning of summer with a party.  This year’s party was held June 22, at Papermill Island in Baldwinsville, on the perfect sunny 70 degree evening.  As the gates opened, the stage began to fill in as though a tide was washing the crowd inward.  This evening definitely had the potential to bring the party up a notch or two with a stellar lineup just ready to start the summer bash off right; beginning with Erin Bowman, then followed by the new hit group AJR, My Crazy Girlfriend, and ending with the AMA award-winning Hot Chelle Rae.

As the shows began, Erin Bowman, a stunning young lady with a powerful voice, won over the crowd immediately with her original tunes such as “King Boy”, “Problem”, and of course her new smash hit, “Hey Summer”.  It was the mash-up medley though that truly showcased her vocal range, style, and influences in music with songs as diverse as “Oops I Did It Again”, “No Diggity”, “If You Want to Be My Lover” and even REM’s “Loosing My Religion”.  This diverse collection was beautifully choreographed and delivered perfectly. Every performer/band has a signature look that makes them unique.  Erin was no exception.  Her look was classic 1960’s retro from her high wasted shorts and donut themed top to her retro camera and felix the cat looking phone cover.  This musician was extremely talented, playing and writing her own songs, and wowing the audience.  She definitely left an impression on the audience who now know her as an up and coming star.

Next up for the evening was AJR.  Watching these three brothers, Adam, Jack, and Ryan, take the stage I felt a bit reminiscent of how the fans must have behaved with the Beatles all those years ago.  These young fans were pushing and shoving, shouting and crying, just to get a view of them.  As they began to play I could see why.  Their style was uniquely their own.  Raised and influenced by many great artists of the 60’s and 70’s these young men truly shone through in a Beach Boys kind of way.  Their breakout hit “I’m Ready” featuring the voice of cartoon character SpongeBob Squarepants is one example of their creative and fun-loving mannerisms and musical style.

Next on the bill was the pop/hip hop group My Crazy Girlfriend.  Myah Marie, Cosmo, and twins Justyn and Bennett Armstrong took over the stage and won over the audience with their harmonic, upbeat and individualistic style.  Performing for years individually, their unique style and outstanding stage presence meld together perfectly to bring audiences hit songs such as “Crazy, Stupid Love”.  The one thing that stood out with this group was their love of their audience, as they demonstrated doing everything in their power to reach out and make their day as they were performing.

The final act of the evening, and Central NY favorite, Hot Chelle Rae took over the stage and owned it the moment they came out. These three young men  never cease to amaze me with their talent.  Taking American Music Awards Best New Artist award in 2011, it is apparent why Ryan and Jamie Follese’ and Nash Overstreet continue to create hit after hit forging new directions with their music each time they put out an album.  Can’t think of a better band to start-up the summer fun with or a better setting to do so.

  • America’s Got Talent Breakout Star Robert Channing Awes & Amazes Central New Yorkers

What do 45,000 runners, Howard Stern, and Jimmy Fallon all have in common?  They were all blown away by the amazing talent of Robert Channing, spell binding mentalist and artist from New Hartford, NY.  Most recently seen on this season’s America’s Got Talent, Robert Channing wowed the judges and audience collecting four straight “Yeses” to move on into the next round on the NBC summer hit show.

As Utica prepared for the 2014 Boilermaker Road Race, a worldwide event with runners from all continents, it only seemed fitting to have a worldwide star like Channing take the stage at the beautiful and grand Stanley Theater in Utica the night before to send off positive vibes for all those racing the following day.

As Channing began his performance, he immediately won the audience over with his charismatic presence and quick wit.  His unique talents, albeit different, demonstrated both Robert’s creative mind and talents splendidly. After being blindfolded by two complete strangers, Robert showed off his inept intuitive ability to identify articles, individuals, and facts, stupefying the audience more and more as the show progressed. This mental capacity to call out things that nobody could possibly know is an amazing gift.

    Robert Channing - Mentalist/Speed Painter
    Robert Channing – Mentalist/Speed Painter

As Channing wrapped up his show, the last two minutes were the most impressive.  To paint a painting is a talent not many of us can achieve, and if a time limit was added to that task, the result would most likely resemble a round of drawing during a game of Pictionary for most of us.  This was not the case for Channing as he painted and danced in a performance, captivating the audience and leaving them on the edge of their seat to see who the subject of this artwork would become. Literally within two minutes, Robert completed his painting, and in cloud of glittery dust, a still life of the iconic Marilyn Monroe came to life on the stage.

Channing’s works of art have become highly collectable pieces, being sought after with prices upwards of $100,000.  As the artist performed for Heidi Klum, Mel B., Howie Mandel, and Howard Stern on AGT, the artwork came to life, and Howard, who is never at a loss for words, was stunned by this amazing creation, while the other judges were left in jealous awe of what they had just witnessed.

I had the opportunity to interview Robert and found him to be the most interesting individual.

Kathy Stockbridge (KS) – How long have you been sharing your mental abilities with audiences? When did you discover this gift?

Robert Channing (RC) – Since I was five years old, I have been messing with not only my mind skills, but other people’s thoughts.  It’s 35% Extra Sensory Perception, 35% Showmanship, and the rest is dumb luck.

KS:  What is your most memorable mental performance?

RC:  Performing in Monaco for Billionaire Alex and Carrie Vik and their lovely family for a private event at his home on the ocean. My family and I were flown first class and performed two private shows for the Vik’s and their clients. Amazing Place!

KS:  Have you found this gift to be one that you can use in everyday life to help others?

RC: The gift that was given to me and helps me put smiles on people’s faces and provides me the ability to help people in need. So far, over the last five years, I have helped raise over $150 million for a charity called “Hunger to Hope” with YUM Brands! as a sponsor alongside President Bill Clinton, Maria Carey, and Christina Aguilera. Yum Brands! It is the largest food organization in the world.

KS: What are some drawbacks being able to read others thoughts?

RC:  My reading of minds is just that..a show. A show of what you can do if you just tap into your own mind’s ability. Scientists believe we only use a fraction of our minds in a lifetime.

KS: How did you begin painting?

RC:  In 1988-1989 I performed with a gentleman named Denny Dent who did a speed painting show called “Two Fisted Art Attack”, and his performance and energy along with his ability to inspire people motivated me to study him and this performance art form. I’ve had this doormat for a few years and decided after some trials and tribulations in my life to express myself with painting, creating extraordinary pieces of art for clients, celebrities, family, and friends.

KS: How did this speed painting using glitter come to be? And how did you know it should be part of your performance?

RC:  It was something that I created with my daughter as an art project, and one that I was inspired to perform on stage by the reactions of my test audiences who first fell in love with my glitter paintings.

KS:  As a contestant on AGT, how did it feel to completely surprise the unsurprisable Howard Stern?

RC:  Being on America’s Got Talent, it was an exhilarating experience that will never be forgotten.  To have Howard, Heidi Klum, Mel B., Howie Mandel, and Nick Cannon give me over a 2 1/2 minute standing ovation along with the packed audience of over 5,000 people at Madison Square Gardens in NYC, and to have Howard Stern join me on stage to sign and ask to own my painting, was like a beautiful dream that I could only imagine.  That it came true is amazing to me!

For those of you who have yet to see Robert live, your chance is right around the corner.  He will be returning to The Stanley Center for the Arts once again, November 15, 2014.  Tickets will go on sale this Friday, July 18 at noon.  Patrons can get them online at www.mvcc.edu/tickets and www.thestanley.org, by phone at (315) 724.4000, or by visiting the Stanley Box Office. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the BELIEVE 271 FUND, which provides awareness, educational programming, and financial assistance to volunteer firefighters, EMTs, and Ladies Auxiliary members in Oneida and Herkimer Counties who suffer from a life threatening illnesses.  Don’t miss your chance to see the phenomenal Robert Channing and his amazing works of art come to life this fall at The Stanley Center for the Arts.

When asked to provide a quote for the readers, Robert left me with this thought that absolutely encompasses his performance and the man behind the spotlight:
