  • Hearing Aide: Brendan Benson ‘You Were Right’

Singer/Songwriter and power pop emissary Brendan Benson will be releasing his eighth solo album on November 29, 2013 for a Record Store Day Black Friday vinyl only exclusive, and in official digital/CD capacity on December 10th, through his own Readymade Records.

Benson, who is recognized as the other principal songwriter in addition to Jack White in the Raconteurs, has again developed a melodically infectious and lyrically intelligent collection of songs.  Released only a year removed from 2012’s What Kind of World, You Were Right collects the entirety of Brendan’s special Readmade single releases throughout 2013, in addition to demos unearthed and reworked from Benson’s vault to round out the substantial 15 song release.

    brendan benson

For fans of Brendan Benson, the usual hallmarks can be expected on this release, sugary sweet melodies, lofty vocals and a willingness to experiment. For those new to Benson, expect to find relevant and often self-depreciating lyrics supported by sturdy melodic foundations that echo Benson’s long and varied list of influences. Benson is blessed with the innate ability to draw the blood out of any melody and inject it with originality and a humble translation. Through his truthful and often humorous commentary on the male/female dynamics of relationships, Benson has developed into one of the greatest modern day songwriters, and on You Were Right, he again delivers a divergent collection, able to sit comfortably under any classification or critique. After a few spins this LP soaks in to you skin, finding you singing in the shower, humming in the car, and waking with its numerous melodies bouncing around your skull.

The LP opens with the hook of a song that is instantly recognizable, yet brand new and completely unique. Just like an ‘old familiar friend’, the opening track ‘It’s Your Choice’ elicits the rare feeling of loving a song the first time you hear it. The addictive instrumentation forces the listener’s ear to crane, like a dog who has just heard a random rustle or tussle outside the window. Benson’s full pop sensibilities are on display with this introduction to the album. Sounding like a classic in the making, the harmonies give the song a big and sleek sound and an groovy aesthetic.

Tracks like ‘Rejuvenate Me and ‘As of Tonight’ continue the theme of Benson’s penchant for opening his records with powerful tracks, a habit that can be traced back to his debut LP. In contrast, ‘Diamond’ which was released as a single, reflects some of the down home influence Nashville (where Brendan lives and the LP was recorded) has had on Benson, both in attitude and melodic expression. This track is a recipient of Benson’s inherent gift to mix any genre with his pop influence, coming out with something contemporary and mellifluous. ‘Diamond’s’ melody line is a high and lonesome back porch holler, smelling of wood smoke and booze, it’s Appalachia backbone transposed with a urban recording studio. The myriad of diverse styles and approaches continue throughout the record spotlighted in tracks such as the 1960’s flashback “I Don’t Want To See You Anymore’, the smoky reggae burn of concert favorite ‘I’ll Never Tell’, and a song that encapsulates Benson’s songwriting style, the vocally dead pan, musically flamboyant ‘She’s Trying To Poison Me’

‘Purely Automatic’ was also one of the singles Benson released this year, and for good reason. Beginning on an edgy descending rock and roll introduction, the longest song on the LP springs excitedly into a banging march. The song was originally a contender for Benson’s 2009 LP My Old Familiar Friend, somehow falling by the wayside, and luckily reappearing here. ‘New Words of Wisdom’, ‘Oh My Love’ and ‘The Fritz’ all use the acoustic guitar as their respective foundation and are the melodic teeter-totters rebounding Benson’s resonant musical ideas. The next to last track of the record is another song featured as a 2013 single release, ‘Swimming’ is easily one of the strongest tracks both musically and lyrically from Benson on the LP. The album concludes with the number ‘Red White and Blues’, a honky-tonk bar room brawl of a tune. Metaphorically referring to certain pharmaceuticals, the track feels as if it could have come from a Raconteur’s recording session, lending itself to that kind of edgy reading.

Brendon Benson’s new LP release You Were Right is a record that offers a rare guarantee to the listener, a promise that the music found within will be honest, made with an attention to detail, and played with conviction and attitude. Benson’s consistent musical output has shown no decline in quality, only an increase in willingness to experiment, and the ability to take chances through artistic expression. Benson has and will continue to offer an honest analysis of the dynamics and intricacies of interpersonal relationships, as well as humorous and always self-aware glimpses of his life and commentaries on our own. His musical development is in constant flux, and his collection of melodies, harmonies and production talents continues to grow and find differing avenues for expression. Lovers of rock and roll that can make you think, as well as dance should look no further that Brendan Benson’s new record You Were Right, available November 29 in a limited LP release and December 10 here in its official capacity.

  • Dark Star Orchestra Brings The Dead Alive at the Palace Theater

Dark Star Orchestra took the stage at the Palace Theater in Albany on November 16th playing the original Grateful Dead setlist from the May 19th, 1977 at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, one of the infamous Spring of ’77 shows that make up a huge dynamic of what the Grateful Dead did in their prime.

Dark Star Orchestra is a band completely established around the extensive archives of the Grateful Dead and their immense set lists that spanned the 30 years of touring. To some, it may be an anomaly how a cover band could acquire the amount of attention that Dark Star has achieved in their 15 years of touring, but after seeing them live it is no wonder they have gained as much positive attention and feedback over the years.

The scene outside of the Palace Theater before the show began could have been passed off as a Grateful Dead Show of the past. Deadheads swarmed the street, some selling goods, others talking about their excitement and predictions for the show.

The show began with “Promised Land” into “Sugaree”, which indicated to any knowledgeable Grateful Dead fan that this was going to be an excellent night of music. The Spring 1977 tour for the Grateful Dead was perhaps the pinnacle of their performances, including such famous shows as May 8, 1977 at Barton Hall at Cornell University. Much like most Grateful Dead Shows of the past the Palace theater was thick with smoke and the aisles filled with dancing fans, engulfed in the music. Dark Star Orchestra has an uncanny way of encapsulating The Grateful Dead’s sound and vibe throughout each show.

The highlights included the first set’s “Sugaree” and “Dancing in the Streets.” The “Sugaree” from May 19, 1977 is referred to as perhaps one of the best of all time. The second set was on fire with a phenomenal “Ramble on Rose,” “Terrapin > Playin’ in the Band > Uncle John’s Band> Drums > The Wheel > China Doll > Playin’ In The Band.” May 19th did not have an encore, so Dark Star Orchestra closed with “Let Me Sing Your Blues Away”, which they proclaimed defined exactly what they were about as a band. Their second encore was the famous sing along, feel good song, Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves In London”, ending what was clearly a crowd pleasing show that definitely made its mark on Albany.

Set 1: Promised Land, Sugaree> El Paso, Peggy-O, Looks Like Rain, Row Jimmy, Passenger, Loser, Dancin’ in the Streets

Set 2: Samson and Delilah, Ramble on Rose, Estimated Prophet, Terrapin Station> Playin’ in the Band> Uncle John’s Band> Drums> The Wheel>China Doll> Playin’ in the Band

Encore: Let Me Sing Your Blues Away, Werewolves in London

  • Has Statewide Music Found a New Festival Home at Carey Lake? – Phallfest in Review

Statewide Music has become well known in Upstate, NY for well run, family friendly, and talent loaded music festivals throughout the years. However the past few sites have been hampered by poor maintenance, were way off the beaten path and couldn’t handle a little weather like any good mother nature hardened festival denizen. Enter Carey Lake and the debut of Phall Fest. Gone are the muddy ruts, the precarious hills to navigate, and the millions of mosquitoes circling overhead. This site is amazingly convenient; located just off of Route 441 in Macedon NY, has ample flat space for both car camping and woods camping, plenty of room for centrally located vending, and a restaurant and bar at the front of the property for those that like to fest high brow.

    DSC_0249

The lineup was primarily made up of Rochester based bands with a handful from the Syracuse and Buffalo areas. Vending was available and convenient and the porta-potties never got to that ‘OMG level’ many festivals can attain. Beyond the two days of top-notch musical entertainment, there was also some excellent pyro-spinning and eating from the Solare Flare troupe. Musicians wandered freely pow-wowing with fans and sitting in with fellow music makers. Both stages were professionally built and beautifully decorated, the main one wrapped in an autumn motif; the woods under a canopy of tarps and Christmas lights. A new home indeed.

If you missed the fun, don’t fret as Carey Lake will be a busy place next year, with the second annual Spring Revival (May 9-11th) and third Fiddler’s Picnic (July 11-13th) already scheduled.

  • Hearing Aide: Tennis’ ‘Small Sound’ EP

NEW_20Album_Cover_FinalIt’s been more than three years since the North Atlantic sailing trip that inspired Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley’s first album under the musical moniker, Tennis. The duo released Cape Dory in 2011, a collection of surf pop tunes that displayed Moore’s swooning vocals among breezy guitar riffs and beach rock beats. Their 2012 follow-up, Young and Old, showed progression; with producer Patrick Carney of the Black Keys involved, Tennis’ music became more than just a summer soundtrack. The album provided a more complete set of tracks, blending rock ‘n roll elements with their signature island sound.

Tennis’ most recent release comes at a time when the sunshine days of summer finally feel like the distant past. Their new EP, Small Sound, features Moore and Riley moving forward as musicians, distancing themselves even further from their Cape Dory days. After working with Carney on their previous project, Small Sound’s production is the product of another one of today’s biggest indie rockers, the Shins’ Richard Swift. This collaboration results the most developed sound Tennis has created to date.

Small Sound opens with its first single, “Mean Streets.” From the get-go, Small Sound continues Young and Old’s focus on Tennis’ evolved musicianship. In an age where indie pop’s utilization of keys generally means danceable synth sounds, piano acts as a driving element throughout the EP. Introducing itself in “Mean Streets,” Tennis’ usage of piano continues into “Dimming Light,” a song whose R&B influences are apparent in a chorus of percussive claps and incredible vocal range. As Small Sound progresses throughout its five tracks, Moore and Riley continue to provide listeners with new components of their music. Small Sound is Tennis’ most complete piece of work yet; it’s the next step in an already impressive career.

Key Tracks: Mean Streets, Dimming Light, 100 Lovers

  • Journey to China: Suck It

    Some dog mounts Nikki’s bitch

You would think after Kid Rock got into the mix with Tommy Lee back in 2007, no one would want to bother with any of the members from Motley Crue.

    Oh, no.

Nikki Sixx was minding his own business before some dog decided to get friendly.

Meanwhile, Tommy had his own battles to contend with.

In case you didn’t hear us before…

    20131118-100854.jpg

Last Tuesday marked the end of a two-week, marathon “eulogy” for Lou Reed by Rolling Stone magazine.

Reed died on October 27th, after a long bout with liver disease.  And, the magazine was not about to let anyone forget him.  Each day, for two-weeks, they tweeted something regarding the deceased.

After serving as guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter of the Velvet Underground, Reed’s solo career spanned several decades. The Velvet Underground were a commercial failure in the late 1960s, but the group has gained a considerable cult following in the years since its demise and has gone on to become one of the most widely cited and influential bands of the era – hence Brian Eno’s famous quote that while the Velvet Underground’s debut album only sold 30,000 copies, “everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band.”

After his departure from the group, Reed began a solo career in 1972. He had a hit the following year with “Walk on the Wild Side”, but subsequently lacked the mainstream commercial success its chart status seemed to indicate.

More than 150 people attended a memorial service in New York City’s Lincoln Center last Thursday.  Reed, himself, was a New York resident. His voice resonated through the air by means of mounted speakers speckled throughout the park. Many who speak of Reed’s talent, speak of the intimacy of his delivery; singing as if he was having a direct conversation with his audience.  Perhaps that’s why RS felt the need to stretch out this period of mourning.  But, the national attention that the magazine garners, coupled with the low-turnout for the memorial, makes one wonder whether or not such attention was in the service of his fans, or merely a few editor’s morning in public.

    Happy Birthday

    20131118-100954.jpg

Pearl Jam took a moment to pay tribute to one of their influences, when they wished Neil Young a happy birthday.

Young’s time in the spotlight started as a member of Buffalo Springfield, and later playing on as a fourth member to Crosby, Stills & Nash.  But, his fame is predominately established through his own, solo work, which spans nearly 45 years. In certain circles, Young is considered the founder of the grunge sound that made Pearl Jam successful back in the early 90s, thanks in part to the heavily modulated guitar play in “Hey Hey, My My” off of Rust Never Sleeps.  He was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 as a solo artist, and again in 1997, as a member of Buffalo Springfield.

    Young turned 68 last Tuesday.

    Journey: “Send Her My Love”

    20131118-142641.jpg

Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippine Islands on Thursday, November 7th.  It registered as a Category 5, “super” hurricane.  At it’s peak, it was recorded with sustained winds of 195 miles per hour (mph), with gusts of 235 mph.

In its wake, nearly 11 million people were impacted directly by the storm, many of whom are believed to be homeless and deprived of food.  Climatologists and some politicians have quickly linked the strength of the storm to global warming. While politicians continue to squabble over the facts of climate change, there are some within the music industry already taking arms in providing aid to the Philippines.  One that stood out the most last week was Journey, who donated $350 thousand.

The band announced the donation on November 15th, and it will go to the United Nations World Food Programme, which is providing Filipinos with food assistance.  The donation should provide 1.4 million meals.  Arnel Pineda, the band’s lead singer, is Filipino.

To lend perspective on the band’s contribution, the rockers in Journey donated three times more than the country of China alone, who donated only $100,000.
