  • HALESTORM Shares the Stage with DAUGHTRY and 3 DOORS DOWN

    This week, Halestorm hits the stage for the first time with Daughtry and 3 Doors Down on several select dates, including Big Flats, NY on July 13th and Canandaigua, NY on July 16th.

    halestormFrom Red Lion, PA, Halestorm has not stopped rocking the stage since 2006, opening for bands like Chevelle, Shinedown, Evanescence, Stone Sour, Three Days Grace and many more. Band members consist of the Hale siblings, Lzzy (vocals/guitar) and Arejay (drums), Joe Hottinger (guitar), and Josh Smith (bass). Halestorm has released two full-length albums, their self-titled (2009) and The Strange Case Of…(2012). Through their hard work, the band won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for the song “Love Bites (So Do I)”. For sure, Lzzy Hale is ready to knock everybody out of the ballpark with her powerful pipes.

    Daughtry:

    Fronted by American Idol’s season 5 finalist, Chris Daughtry, this five-pieced band from McLeansville, NC hits the stage for a third tour leg with co-headliner 3 Doors Down. Band members consist of Chris Daughtry, Josh Steely (guitar), Brian Craddock (guitar), Josh Paul (bass), and Robin Diaz (drums). The band has released three albums, Daughtry (2006), Leave This Town (2009), and Break The Spell (2011), with a total of over 6.7 million records sold in the United States. Hit singles include “Over You”, “Home”, “It’s Not Over”, “No Surprise”, and many more. Daughtry is more than ready to show everyone what they have in store for this tour.

    3 Doors Down:

    Hailing from Escatawpa, Mississippi, this five-pieced band, consisting of Brad Arnold (vocals), Chet Roberts (guitar), Chris Henderson (guitar), Todd Harrell (bass), and Greg Upchurch (drums), hits the stage with Daughtry for a third time since the start of their co-headlining tour in December 2012. 3 Doors Down has released a total of five albums, The Better Life (2000), Away From the Sun (2002), Seventeen Days (2005), 3 Doors Down (2008), and Time of My Life (2011) with a total of 23 singles including “Kryptonite”, “Here Without You”, “When I’m Gone”, “Citizen/Soldier”, “It’s Not My Time”, “When You’re Young” and “Every Time You Go”. 3 Doors Down knows how to put on a hell of a show and they are ready to do so this summer.

  • Trombone Shorty Plays Final Day of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Fest

    The 12th Edition of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (XRIJF) wraps up today with free shows on 4 outdoor stages featuring Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue back for his fourth appearance. Plus, a full night of shows in the clubs, all followed by the final jam session at the Rochester Plaza. This year’s festival has been a showcase of “known” and “unknown” musicians – tonight will be a party in the streets that should not be missed!

    The latest album from Trombone Shorty and the Orleans Avenue, For True, offers substantive proof of their explosive growth, further refining the signature sound Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews has dubbed “Supafunkrock.”

    Andrews hails from the Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans’ 6th Ward, getting his nickname at four years old when he was observed by his older brother James marching in a street parade wielding a trombone twice as long as the kid was high. He got his start early, learning how to play drums and the trumpet at the age of three. By the time he reached six, this prodigy was playing trumpet and trombone in a jazz band led by his older brother James.

    The band – Mike Ballard on bass, Pete Murano on guitar, Joey Peebles on drums, Dan Oestreicher on baritone sax and Tim McFatter on tenor sax – stirs together old-school jazz, funk and soul, laced with hard-rock power chords and hip-hop beats, and they’ve added some tangy new ingredients on For True as they keep pushing the envelope, exploring new musical territory.

  • Sunday Night Dead: Dark Star Orchestra at Waterstreet Music Hall

    A show on a Sunday? Ordinarily it’s a no for me but the universe had been aligned in just the right way. Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) had no plans of stopping in Upstate NY on their way to the Jubilee in Ohio until a previous gig at Mighty High Mountain Festival was cancelled and they chose to come shake their bones with us at Waterstreet Music Hall on May 19th.

    DSO shows are always built upon the extensive Grateful Dead catalog – the band has a knack for hand picking all the right shows and I’ve yet to be disappointed with any of their shows, in 10 years of seeing them play out the masterful sounds of what so many of us hold dear to our hearts, a lifestyle formed around the music of the Dead. It only took a few songs into the show for me to realize they had chosen a show from 1979 – once the notes of “Jack A Roe” hit my ears I knew with certainty that it was 2/7/1979 – the setlist immediately played out in my head and I envisioned the night ahead was going to be a good one.

    Shows like this are far and few between for me these days but this night was one for the scrapbooks for sure. Friends and co-workers were in every corner of the music hall side of the venue and the band was putting down some heavy tunes. The energy was flowing and the band looked like they were enjoying playing for us as much as we loved having them play. By the time
    Peggy-O” came on, it was time to put down the pen and paper and get out on the dance floor with the others.

  • A Threesome of Trios: Haewa, Legit, and Heady Yetis at Montage

    Rochester’s Montage Music Hall is primarily known for its metal shows but has occasionally branched out into the jam scene with varied success. The venue has made some sound upgrades recently and is again making forays into jamland. Friday, May 17th was one of these adventures, with Buffalo’s Heady Yetis opening for Rochester’s Legit and Haewa. Early on, it was apparent that this would be a successful journey as people crowded the venue at show time, many having traveled all the way from Buffalo to support the Yetis’ early set.

    The Yetis are a young band primarily composed of members of the University of Buffalo’s jam club. They also comprised the surprise of the evening, as the jam force is strong with this young group. Playfully moving between songs with soaring solos from guitarist Philip Dreisen and rock solid rhythms from bassist Paddy Donnelly and drummer Nathan Bakowski, the Yetis showcased talent well beyond their years. Unfortunately, given the impending summer college break the Yetis will be on extended hiatus. Let’s hope this “jam-pire” strikes back as the deafening roar of the crowd end set indicated they all wanted a lot more.

    Following the Yetis was the Rochester mega-group Legit, who played their second performance ever. Legit is composed of drummer-for-everything Matt Ramerman, Roots Collider’s  Wil McKenna on bass and keyboard whiz Charles Lindner of The Manhattan Project. In complete contrast to their jazzy coffee-house-esque debut show at Roam Cafe earlier in the month (which you can read about here), this set was a rager filled with playful improvisation and a very adventurous take on The Beatles “Eleanor Rigby”. It was abundantly clear that this band knows how to play to a room and the frenzied crowd in house definitely brought out their animal instincts.

    During setbreak I find myself outside pow-wowing with Ocupanther‘s Jason Gilly, Roots Collider’s (and LEGIT’s) Wil McKenna, Thunderbody‘s Sam Snyder and Dopapod‘s Rob Compa. This is a typical situation in Rochester’s booming music scene, with musicians happy to support each other, sit in, and do whatever it takes to help each other succeed. Which is exactly how it should be.

Fronted by Berkelee educated ax wizard Collin Jones, with a rock solid rhythm section of Ben Chilbert (Bass) and Riley Dichairo (Drums); the band has been blanketing the local area with shows and have been rewarded justly with a noticeable degree of improved tightness in their complex compositions. The trio has no fear of experimentation and while this can sometimes cause a train wreck, more often then not, it works beautifully. The group powered through their itinerary of originals with reckless improvisational abandon, much to the glee of the packed house. Mid-set, the already salivating audience was rewarded with a sit-in from the aforementioned Rob Compa, and watching these two guitar wizards play off each other was an excellent ending to a jamtastic experience. Although next time Rob, please turn it up to 11.

  • Funkin’ for your Feets: Turkuaz Storms Water Street

    “Turr-kwaz” is how you say Turkuaz, and you should remember that pronunciation, as this Brooklyn based band isn’t going anywhere. The word as defined is the Turkish translation of  turquoise, but unlike the gemstone there is nothing blue about this band. Their style is pure funk, which is deliciously refreshing in the modern landscape of never-ending jambands with musical Attention Deficit Disorder.  Don’t mistake this musical singularity for boredom though, as only moss-covered rocks and Nickelback fans could possibly not feel the urge to dance their posteriors off while Turkuaz rages their funktasticness, and Thursday, May 16th at Rochester’s Club at Water Street would be no exception. Blessed with a large crowd, at least partially in part due to the earlier Rusted Root show at the annual Lilac Festival, the band took full advantage of the packed house and played their asses off for two sets.

    The first set from Turkuaz featured tons of original material showcasing the band’s deep influences from old school masters such as George Clinton and James Brown to 90’s funk machines like Galactic and Lettuce. Sexy people playing sexy music laden with delicious horn sections: this always works. Some highlights of the first set included exploratory jamming within original compositions with names like “Bubba Slide” and “Electric Habitat” as well as a nicely chosen array of covers including “Slippery People” by the Talking Heads and Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright”. Towards the end of the first set, Dopapod’s Rob Compa joined the band on guitar for the original tune “Physical Challenge” and a cover of The Band’s “The Shape I’m In”. Rob can often be found sitting in or attending Rochester shows when Dopapod is on break and he always brings the heat on his 6 string.

    Despite being a weeknight, the venue only seemed to get busier during set-break and the second set featured perhaps the most energetic crowd this writer has EVER seen at Club-side Water Street during the week. The segues were heavy and it almost seemed as if the music never stopped; fine by me! The ladies ruled the roost for much of this set, with top notch vocals by Sammi Garret and Geneva Williams. Really, beyond the excellent  music, this band has some of the finest vocals out there, with all four singers laying it down with heaping spoonfuls of soul goodness. Set highlights included all the segues, the twosome of original “Chatte Lunatique” into Hot Chocolate’s “Everyone’s a Winner” and a spot on funky-blast-off version of Led Zeppelin’s “Trampled Under Foot”.

    Beyond the music, the crowd, the sit-in and everything else; it was inherently apparent that this band is a group of people who have deep kinship. Throughout the night they were endlessly smiling at each other, putting their arms around each others shoulders and cheering each other on. Any group of fine musicians can put together an excellent itinerary of rage, but when one can sense an internal warmth; a group that is truly acts as one soul; it brings the entire experience over the top.

    Check out Turkuaz’s next stop in Upstate NY on June 29th at The Westcott Theater in Syracuse. You will not regret it.

  • Rochester Jazz Festival Schedule Update | Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings Cancel

    rochjazz13-logoRochester Jazz Festival has offered a schedule update – Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings announced that plans to tour in 2013 have been postponed due to illness. Sharon Jones was recently diagnosed with stage-1 bile duct cancer – which doctors say is both operable and curable. and The Rochester Jazz Fest wish Sharon all the best and a speedy recovery.

    The James Hunter Six, previously scheduled for 7PM on June 28th, will now play at 9PM. Added to the schedule, now performing at 7PM on the 28th, is two-time Grammy nominee, Shemekia Copeland. Both are free shows on the City of Rochester East Avenue and Chestnut Street Stage presented by Rochester General Health System.

    More than 1200 artists from around the world will perform in 280 concerts including more than 75 free shows at 19 venues and outdoor stages. Last years festival drew more than 187,000 people from around the world and across the U.S. XRIJF has grown to become one of the worlds largest jazz festivals with one of the nations most extensive international lineups.

  • Rochester Jazz Festival Now Offering Free Shuttle Service for Attendees

    This year’s Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (XRIJF) will be offering a free shuttle service, courtesy of Simcona Electronics and Horizon Club Tours. Shuttle service will be offered at no charge all nine days during the festival, June 21 – 29, to make it easy for patrons to get to and from downtown parking garages and lots surrounding the festival.

    Continuous round trip service will be provided daily from 5:00pm to Midnight. Buses will run on an approximate 15-minute schedule for each stop, last pick-ups will be promptly at 11:30pm. Festival brochures and program guides will be aboard each bus for patrons and each shuttle is air conditioned as well as equipped with bathrooms. Download a map of the Shuttle route

  • Rochester’s Party In The Park Concert Series Lineup 2013

    Rochester has announced a star-studded lineup for this year’s Windstream Party in the Park 2013 concert series this summer. The concerts will all be held at the Riverside Festival site at Court St. and Exchange Blvd. Tickets are $2 per concert or $15 for a 10-week party pass. Tickets can be purchased online, at the Blue Cross Arena or on-site the night of the concert. Children under 12 are free.

    Also this year, concert-goers can enjoy food from several local food trucks, including Brick-n-Motor, Le Petit Poutine, Roc City Sammich and more.     Local food and drink will be a highlight of Windstream Party in the Park. Food trucks will roll onto the Riverside Festival Site each week. Gourmet offerings from local trucks Brick-N-Motor, Chowder Up Seafood, ROC City Sammich, Wraps on Wheels, Le Petit Poutine, Tuscan Wood Fired Pizza and Natures Pirates will be available. Local beer from Genesee Brewing Co. and Rohrbachs Brewing Co. will be provided.

    Parking at Party

    Parking is available on-street and at nearby parking garages, including the Court Street Garage at the corner of South Avenue and Court Street and at the Sister Cities Garage, 28 S. Fitzhugh St. for a $5 Special Events fee.

    Other Site Rules

    • For the comfort and safety of everyone, patrons are asked to leave their skateboards, in-line skates and pets at home.
    • The City maintains a “No Chairs” policy for the safety of patrons; however, bleachers are provided.
    • No cameras or recording devices.
