  • Merry Upstate Metal Xmas

Right about now, we expect most of you are hung over on Stewart’s Egg Nog and family bickering.  And, we’re absolutely positive that if you hear Dominick the Donkey one more time, you’re going to kill someone with that Fender guitar you just got. Merry Xmas from Upstate Metal.

So, with that said we’re bringing back what we’ve found on Al Gore’s Interwebs, hoping to find what others are doing today.

Here’s your little bit of valium.

The economy has been improving across upstate New York, but some of us still find it difficult to rub two pennies together.
One of our competitors, the Capital Region’s Metroland, has witnessed the residual effects of the Great Recession, first hand. Above, a parent appears to be bragging over his or her Dickensian approach to soften the blow to the kids.
“I told my kids, ‘it’s Jesus’ birthday, not your birthday. You’re not getting anything’.”
    Ouch!
That’s a tough pill to swallow right there. Hopefully Santa Claus found his way there last night. Something made from the heart is always better than something bought. Remember that, kids.

KISS’ Gene Simmons and his family paid a visit to Uncle Huge at the Playboy Mansion for an epic holiday party on Christmas Eve.
He took a moment to snap off a picture of his 21-year-old daughter, Sophie Tweed Simmons, snuggling up to a 20-foot tall Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Sophie has been in the headlines herself, having competed briefly on Fox Network’s The X Factor, last year. And, earlier the year, English newspaper The Daily Mirror published photographs of her in her thong bikini, while on vacation with her boyfriend in Ha’waii.
Sophie is one of two daughters between Simmon and 1982 Playboy Playmate of the Year, Shannon Tweed.

Halestorm lead singer, Lzzy Hale uploaded a photo of the family Christmas Tree from her mother’s house. this morning.
2013 has been a good year for the Hale family. After releasing their second album The Strange Case Of… in April of 2012, the song “Love Bites (So Do I)” won their first Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance on February 10, 2013.
Halestorm is scheduled to launch a 12-stop European tour on April 1, 2014. The band just recently stopped in our area to perform. Go take a look for an awesome write-up and fantastic photos of the band.

Vince Neil cares not for a White Christmas, at least not on his Christmas card that pictures him and girlfriend, Rain Andreani.
The 52-year-old, former frontman of Motley Crüe, is currently dating the 32 year-old hair dresser while separated from his fourth wife, Lia Gerardini. Neil married Gerardini in 2005, but announced their separation in 2010.
Neil made headlines in late 2012 after collapsing on stage at a concert in Sydney, Australia. Aside from music, the hard rocker ventured into the Gentlemen’s Club business, opening Deja Vu Presents: Vince Neil’s Girls Girls Girls in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Girls, Girls, Girls was the Crüe’s forth studio album, released back in 1987.

    20131225-131737.jpg

Black Label Society frontman, Zakk Wylde is absolutely giddy over the Arthur Fonzarelli doll he apparently received from under the tree this morning.

The 46-year-old founding father of the LA rock group is certainly young enough to remember Happy Days from before its time in syndication.  And, for those of us old enough to remember the ultra-cool character that was made famous by Henry Winkler can completely understand the excitement over receiving such a gift.

This has been a busy year for Wylde and his crew.  Following the release of Unblackened, the boys went out and participated in this summer’s Gigantour IV, along with Megadeth, Device, Hellyeah, Newsted and Death Division.  Wylde is reportedly working on material for yet another release next year.  Since the band’s inception in 1998, the band has launched nine studio albums, two live albums, two compilation albums, an EP and three video albums.

The posting of Wylde’s mug in full scream makes one wonder if he’s truly excited over getting The Fonz, or is he trying to release the tension from his all of his work.

There could also be that fact that he’s upset over the departure of Nick “Evil Twin” Cantanese from BLS.  Cantanese, who has been with the band since the start, reportedly set sail on December 2.

In case you’re looking to spend some recently acquired cash, a vintage Happy Days‘ Fonz doll from 1976 is currently selling on eBay for $26. (Imagine how much it would have been worth had he never jumped that shark.)

    20131225-131831.jpg

Orianthi Panagaris was recently getting into the festive spirit, as shown here from a picture she posted on her Instagram account a few days ago, apparently stealing shit out of her Christmas Tree’s closet.

Or, maybe, that’s how they dress where she’s from in Australia.

The amazingly gifted guitarist is currently in between tours, having closed out traveling with Alice Cooper over the past several months as part of the 98Rock Halloweenie Roast.

The 28-year-old released her third studio album, Heaven in This Hell,  this past March and ultimately earned a three out of five stars from Allmusic.com.  A deluxe version of the album was subsequently released this past September, which included three extra tracks.

For you stalkers who have yet to happen across her Instagram account, well, go Google it.  But, I’ll tell you, the girl’s got a special relationship with that phone of hers.  It’s not uncommon to see four or five updates on her account on any given day.  Of course, the girl was just touring, and she gifted her fans with plenty of images from behind the scenes.

She goes back on the road next March, as she’ll meet up again with Cooper overseas as part of the European Rock Meets Classic Tour.

Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year’s to you all from UpstateMetal!

  • Review: Monster Energy Drink Outbreak Tour 2013

Monster Energy Drink’s 2013 Outbreak Tour invaded the Mid-Hudson Civic Center Sunday, Oct. 20 in Poughkeepsie N.Y.

    Matt Tuck
    Matt Tuck

Headlining the tour was Bullet For My Valentine with special guest Black Veil Brides, Stars In Stereo, and Throw The Fight.

    Bullet For My Valentine
    Bullet For My Valentine

Opening the show was Throw The Fight. I have never seen this band before, but they totally rocked live.

    Matt Tuck
    Matt Tuck

Lead vocalist James Clark gave a brief, heartfelt speech about being a cancer survivor and reminded everyone to chase their dreams, because five years ago he was in the crowd as a fan, and now he is on the stage living his dream.

    Matt Tuck
    Matt Tuck

I recommend going out and seeing this band live if you get the chance. I had a chance to talk with them after their set, and they are a bunch of really cool down to earth guys besides great performers.

Stars In Stereo were slated in the second spot for this event.

    Bullet For My Valentine
    Bullet For My Valentine

This is now my third time seeing Stars In Stereo this year. It seems like they are opening for everybody these days.

    Throw The Fight
    Throw The Fight

Bec Hollcraft is really starting to come into her own as a performer. Last time I saw her, I felt like she was a little bit reserved but not anymore.

Guitarist Jordan McGraw has a lot of energy and is always playing to the crowd, pumping them up.

The first two times I saw them, they played a cover of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” but didn’t touch it this time and just played tracks off their album.

    Outbreak Tour 2013
    Outbreak Tour 2013

Up next in the three spot was Black Veil Brides. I know this band had their detractors, but every time I see them on a show, they give a really good live performance.

Andy Biersack of BVB even said during his thank you speech to everyone in the crowd who is not a BVB fan, “Thank you for putting up with us and letting us perform for you before Bullet For My Valentine came out.”

Just like some of the “boy bands” you see in the pop genre, I think the young female teenage following they have generates most of the negative press they get from fans. BVB seems to be the “boy band” of rock music.

Welch metal-core rockers, Bullet For My Valentine, are up next in the headlining forth spot for this show.

BFMV came right out and kicked @$$ from start to finish.

This was one of the best live performances by a band that I’ve seen all year! This was my first time seeing BFMV and I was not disappointed.

Bullet is a really solid band, and the crowd just ate up their energy. Lead vocalist Matthew Tuck is just amazing on vocals live, and Jason James was just as good with his screaming/growl backing vocals.

From drums to guitar to bass, these guys are all very talented musicians.

Near the end of the set, Matt invited out Jordan McGraw of Stars In Stereo and Ryan Baustert of Throw The Fight. Matt said that “tomorrow is these guys’ birthday,” and brought them out for a drink on stage.

    Throw The Fight
    Throw The Fight

Matt made them do a head stand as members from BFMV held their ankles and poured a nice alcoholic beverage in a red solo cup down their throats. Ryan failed his first head stand attempt, which made Matt quip in with “you’re not to flexible, are you?”

Bullet performed “Tears Don’t Fall” as the last song of the night. I don’t think they had a choice. When Matt told the crowd this was going to be the last song of the night, the crowd started an immediate chant of “Tears Don’t Fall,” which brought a huge smile to Matt’s face.

This was a really good concert from start to finish. It might even be in the top 10 of best concerts I’ve seen in 2013. All the bands were really good on this show, and if you love music like I do, and you don’t get into the band bashing like some fans do because they don’t like a certain band’s image, go out and see these bands when they come to your area. Remember, it’s all about the music and having a good time!

  • Preview: Thriller A Metal Tribute To Michael Jackson

Thriller Tribute Cd Cover ArtCleopatra Records is set to release a rather interesting compilation cd on Oct. 22, 2013. Thriller: A Metal Tribute To Michael Jackson, with artists past and present on this project, I am really hoping that this is going to be a really good cover album and not a bust. I guess it all depends on the musical arrangements for each track for success, and I can’t wait to see what these artists come up with.

Although it’s labeled as “Thriller,” it is not a cover of the “Thriller” album itself, but rather many of MJ’s hits are covered instead. In fact, 13 songs are covered on the disc. I wish the Three Days Grace’s cover of “Give In To Me” made it on the cd and rounded it out at 14 tracks.

Nonpoint’s Elias Soriano is on the track “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground).” Chris Jericho of Fozzy does a version of “Dirty Diana.” Asking Alexandria’s Donny Worsnop and Mr. Big’s Billy Sheehan are one the track “Man In The Mirror,” and the cd would not be complete without the Alien Ant Farm cover of “Smooth Criminal.”

Track Listing for Thriller : A Metal Tribute

    1. Thriller – Chuck Billy ( Testament )
    2. Man In The Mirror – Danny Worsnop ( Asking Alexandria) Billy Sheehan ( Mr. Big)
    3. The Way You Make Me Feel – Angelo Moore (Fishbone) Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake) Rudy Sarzo (Queensryche)
    4. Black Or White – Lajon Witherspoon (Sevendust) Bruce Kulick (ex-Kiss) Tony Franklin (The Firm)
    5. Beat It – Pirya Panda (Diemonds) Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (Guns N’ Roses)
    6. Billy Jean – Corey Glover (Living Colour) Phil Campbell (Moterhead)
    7. Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) – Elias Soriano ( Nonpoint)
    8. Rock With You – Doug Pinnick (King’s X)

  • The 2nd Annual Fiddlers Picnic – A Good Old Ho’down in the Mud

The roads were treacherous, the mud was deep, the sun was out and the sounds of bluegrass filled the warm summer air. The 2nd annual Fiddlers Picnic in Marion, NY brought us securely into full blown festy season. With a lineup that impressed bluegrass lovers young and old, this intimate festival nestled in the woods was of all things one hell of a family ho’down!

Friday: Ahhh, the first day of the fest; always a wild card in my book. It can go two ways really, calm and chill and hanging with friends – gearing up for a late Saturday … OR it’s the night that we all get crazy and dance barefoot in the mud with a jar of pineapple moonshine in our hands till the sun comes up.

Highlights from Friday included Eastbound Jesus with the sounds to bring people from setting up their camp to dancing in the hay covered mud. The Blind Owl Band who set the bar high for the two remaining bands that night, played their hearts out while a barrage of friends graced the stage.

The night got better as it progressed with South Carolina’s Dangermuffin keeping the energy high! The straw dance floor atop the mud only added an old-timey feel to the family ho’down this festival had become. It was clear that this weekend was going to be filled with sit-ins and campfires, despite the weather just a few short days before. Late-night Friday belonged to Hogmaw from Pennsylvania who rightfully refer to themselves as ‘bringing a distinct abstract sound to string band music that can only be best described as THUNDERGRASS!’

    Hogmaw

Saturday: The day began with The North and South Dakotas, a great sting band with a drummer and amplified instruments. It was quite relaxing and a beautiful way to start the day –  sunshine in your face sitting on the grassy hill, enjoying the people watching , and girls with hula-hoops and a jug o’ shine to set their dancing mood.

    Clinton's Ditch
    Clinton’s Ditch

Saturday Afternoon brought us to the 3rd stage for the Aaron Austin Band which slowed things down a bit more than the previous act. For a lovely cover of “Tangled Up In Blue” we sat in the hammock and enjoyed the coolness of the shade. Late afternoon developed into a gathering of close friends and families; children in rain boots and hay strewn across the ground to make a dance floor above the muddy earth. Festival goers were also treated to sets by Still Hand String Band, Boots n’ Shorts and Rochester natives, Clinton’s Ditch.

    Boots n' Shorts

Black Mountain Symphony on Saturday was another first timer for this gal and of course another delightful choice of bands, which has been the theme for the fest so far. Black Mountain Symphony features Annie Campo, a soulful singer/violinist with talent far beyond her years. Drummer Bill Palinski shared the duties of vocals and artistic drumming that kept the beat like a locomotive barreling down the tracks.  Bear Campo on keyboards also brought an intense sound to this performance. This band will be a welcome addition to any festival – their sound is all encompassing with strings, keys, guitar and drums.

    Black Mountain Symphony

The real treat Saturday was the surprise first time live performance of Ms. Haley Rose (age 12) with her breathtaking rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” and a captivating “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, which brought festival goers to a stand still on the hill as she sang her heart out to the ears of fans and family alike. Natural talent runs in her family and it’s worth noting that Haley’s singing talents were equally impressive to that of her younger brother, Brayden Vaughn, whom MC’d the entire festival with the experience of a seasoned announcer.

Also on the bill for Saturday was Boots n’ Shorts, Jatoba, Floodwood, the Rumpke Mountain Boys and a late-night jam with Free Grass Union. Saturday night’s Jatoba set gave us a fast-ass-jam-grass version of Phish’s “Rift” that had phans hootin and a’ hollerin for this Vermont-based festival favorite.

Bands these days are creating side projects for themselves that seem to be crossing the genres in which they have been known in – Floodwood is no exception to this trending concept in music. moe. band members Vinny Amico and Al Schnier are credited for face melting jam-rock while also belonging to a down right kick ass bluegrass ensemble. Floodwood followed suit with the rest of the weekend and brought the roof down with their original brand of newgrass.

After a set with Floodwood, the energy was high and the mud was deep – the Rumpke Mountain Boys, from Ohio, brought the music hungry crowd to the second stage for what turned out to be one of my favorite jams from the weekend. The band has molded their own style of bluegrass/jamgrass into what they call ‘trashgrass.’

Unfortunately because of the severe weather warnings for Sunday, Fiddlers Picnic had to cancel the music for Sunday – when campers woke to down pouring rain early Sunday morning, we were sad about missing the music for that day but relieved that we got the warning early enough to pack-up. Gear loaded onto the back of a sleeping-bag, we embraced the mudslide down the side of the hill we were perched upon so happily the two previous days of the festival.

This festival had a stellar line-up from morning till late-nights, the family-friendly vibe, and beautiful camping spots. Fiddlers Picnic should be on the radar of any bluegrass lover. Cheers!

  • Mountain Jam 2013: A Photographer’s Perspective

While Thursday at Mountain Jam 2013 was rainy and cold, the music kept things warm.  People braved the weather to enjoy incredible sets from Rubblebucket and Primus.  Along the hillside were even some fire dancers and fire eaters.  The ceremonies started with a smudging to purify the air and good vibes for the weekend.  Mountain Jam was about to begin and Thursday was full of energy and excitement.  How better to end the night than a late night set from the powerful duo known as Big Gigantic.

When the sun came up on Friday, it was sadly behind thevclouds.  Most campers slept in their cars as tents were blown over and rivers of mud passed through the grounds.  Braving the weather, coffee was my original quest.  After that first cup of Joe, it didn’t matter how much it rained, music was in the air and caffeine was in the blood.  Friday brought  incredible acts such as Nicki Bluhm, Deer Tick, The Avett Brothers and Widespread Panic.  Mud wasn’t going to stop Mountain Jam, it was just going to add character.

Saturday finally came with a weather report that included No Rain! Yay!  And what a day on Hunter Mountain.  From Swear and Shake, Amy Helm and Gary Clark, Jr. on the side stage to Michael Franti, The Lumineers and Gov’t Mule on the main stage, Saturday was non-stop jams, non-stop dancing and well, still a little slippery in the mud, but at least it wasn’t raining.  The theme of the day was going into the audience, as Franti and the Lumineers got up close and personal with the crowd.

Sunday fit it’s name perfectly – it was a sunny day and finally the mud started to dry up and spirits were truly soaring.  While some people left early for their Monday lives, the ones that were able to stay saw some great performances.  London Souls bassist passed out backstage Soulive bassist filled in.  ALO, Dispatch, Jackie Greene and of course Phil Lesh and Friends.  I even got a sneak peak of upcoming Spencer on the inside stage.  Remember that name, you will be hearing it often and soon on the radio.

  • Weathered but not Worn: A Recap of Mountain Jam 2013

“Pri-mus sucks,” was the battle cry of die-hard fans waiting to see Thursday night’s headliner at Mountain Jam 2013.  By this point it was hard to know if the sky was black because darkness was falling or the rain clouds took over or if Primus was channeling the shadow Gods in preparation for their performance. Two giant inflatable astronauts flanked the stage and a large screen in the backdrop, “Pri-mus sucks,” was heard again and again.  Albeit an odd welcoming and kick off to the ninth installment of Mountain Jam, it’s hard to imagine a band like Primus filling a headlining spot at a festival (it’s not the first) given that they are not the stereotyped festival band, but it worked.  It would mark the beginning of a long and very strange trip.

Primus is a master of the presentation of music, holding the patent on the craft.  The music is to be heard, and that is what we did, listened.  The band members were cloaked in darkness while the screen played reels of various fitting images in sync with the rhythm.  Appealing to a varied crowd, Primus played some widely known songs such as, “ Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” and encored with “Tommy the Cat.” Appropriately, they included, “My Name is Mud.”   Spirits were soaring high and Primus was no match for the weather.  The dance party was just getting underway on the Healey Brothers Stage with Kung Fu hosting.  The funk-fusion electro-pop quintet was full of energy and simply fun.  The Kung Fu Band handed the baton over to Big Gigantic who kept the party going until the early morning hours.

The second day of the festival was an unfortunate doozy as a result of terrible weather.  Sideways, torrential down pour for hours upon hours dampened spirits, made for a super-saturated ground and prevented many from re-entering the mountain site for more music, at least the majority of the day.  Some folks packed up their camping gear and went home, others stayed in their hotel rooms and streamed the festival and of course there were the purists who ventured out for their must-see-live band of choice.  There were a few positives to the wretched weather.  For one, Mountain Jam is located at a ski lodge which offered a warm place for people to dry off and socialize, complete with a full bar and a cafeteria type food fare.  Albeit, music was sparse except for periodic noodle-ers on a small, corner stage and muffled bass emanating from the attached Healey Brother’s Hall.  Another positive is that Healey Brother’s Hall was jam packed with people getting out of the rain.  Both David Wax Museum and Futurebirds had a large draw, mostly by default.  However, both performances were well received.  Many people started filing back in to the mountainous amphitheater in spite of the continued downpour to catch both Avett Brothers and Widespread Panic.   Mountain Jam organizers accommodated Jammers accordingly by providing towing services for vehicles that became stuck in the mud.  Organizers also laid hay and added stones to more worn pathways.  The stage equipment was protected as well.

ilent Bujak was even moved into the ski lodge to avoid the mud at the Campgrounds Stage.Scott Avett’s energy on stage was exuberant and contagious, not unlike the catchy folk rock sounds of Avett Brothers songs.  The crowd consumed his rawness like they had been held captive and just given permission to release.  He cried out, “The rain/it fell/and we got down” making the old adage, “learn to dance in the rain” ring true as the brothers jumped around dancing, playing, singing and stomping.  The revival was underway.  The Avett Brothers moved through a set of mostly fast tempo songs.  Highlights are the extraordinary vocal harmonization as exemplified in David Childer’s, “The Prettiest Thing.” After a power paced set, the brothers closed out with two slower songs, “I and Love and You” and “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise.”

Widespread Panic was highly anticipated as they rarely venture to the northeast.  The sonic sounds emanating from the stage were smooth and mellow and subtly hinting that these fellas were southern rock.  The first set comprised mostly of original songs and the second set consisted of a batch of covers with a few sit-ins.  Both Bill Evans of Soulgrass and Gov’t Mule, and saxaphonist Danny Louis joined Widespread for a rendition of Traffic’s, “Low Spark of High Heeled Boys,” a popular song choice played multiple times throughout the weekend. Evans stuck around for a “Surprise Valley” sandwich that included a drums segment before moving into Talking Heads’ “Papa Legba” before returning to end “Surprise Valley.”

By the time Saturday rolled around, Jammers were calling upon the sun Goddess, and she answered, finally! Ponchos and boots were traded in for sun-kissed shoulders, pretty little dresses and a jubilant vibration of absolute appreciation.  Saturday meant a full day of music, no exceptions and no excuses.  Swear and Shake, shook the West Stage in a relatively early slot.  Looking dapper in their suits of blue, while the lady of the band, Kari Spieler, sang folk songs in her checkered blue skirt.  It would seem that folks took notice, in a big way, of The Revivalists, a soulful band all the way from New Orleans.  A jam-packed Healey Brother’s Hall for round two was a testament to their music and perhaps gaining a few more fans.

Mountain Jam has always been a festival that includes the Woodstock, NY family of musicians and it was only fitting that the Amy Helm Band performs.  Miss Helm invited the cream of the crop to join her on stage with Marco Benevento on keys for the entire set.  Mike and Ruthy, and Connor Kennedy sat in for “Long Black Veil.”  Amy Helm dedicated a song to her daddy as well as others that had passed in The Band with a heartfelt, “It Makes No Difference.”

With Mountain Jam under full swing, the decent weather allowed for all activities to resume.  Vendors were happy people were shopping, food was selling like hot cakes, beer was pouring from the taps and the sky ride was now open.  Riding up the mountain to take in the scenery is always a big hit.  For five dollars, Jammers can relax comfortably on the chair lift, breath in the mountain air and hear their favorite artists’ songs as the sound waves ascend the lush green incline.

Gary Clark Jr. has been at his craft for a while but he is just now breaking through on scene.  His set was full of fire and brimstone but without judgment and eternal damnation.  He is rock and roll and he made sure we knew it.  The Lumineers have expanded their song catalog to include snippets of Creedence Clearwater Revival and Bob Dylan’s, “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” paying homage to their roots in folk music.

Festival host Warren Haynes and his band, Gov’t Mule took the stage as Saturday’s headliner for two sets.  One of the most enjoyable aspects of a festival is the ability of a band to include collaborations and Gov’t Mule was no exception.  Bill Evans played for moe.’s “Opium.”  Gov’t Mule played Creedence Clearwater Revival’s, “Effigy”, adding a “Folsom Prison Blues” jam.  Including an all-star cast of musicians: Bill Evans, Eric Bloom, Neil Evans, Ryan Zoidis, Hook Herrera and Eric Krasno, Gov’t Mule encored with Tom Waits, “Get Behind the Mule.”

As Sunday rolled around, sleepy campers emerged from their tents and shuttle buses dropped off hotel guests ready for another full day of music under the blue skies.  A lively and fun set from both Dispatch and Jackie Greene primed the crowd for the much anticipated closer, Phil Lesh and Friends.  The Friends included: John Scofield on guitar, Joe Russo on drums, Jeff Chementi on keys and of course, Warren Haynes on vocals and guitar.  As always, the last day of a festival is bittersweet.  But, to quote The Grateful Dead, “What a long strange trip its been.”
