  • The Big Takeover this weekend in Poughkeepsie & Hudson

    The Big Takeover is a unique concoction of backgrounds and spirits that perfectly creates a version of reggae that is fresh and vivid.     The Big Takeover is making a return to Ciboney Cafe in Poughkeepsie, NY, April 12th. The show starts at 8pm and goes till 11pm. A dinner menu is available between 5pm-10pm and a Happy Hour from 6pm-8pm. Tickets can be purchased at the venue.

    The band then moves onto a show at Club Helsinki in Hudson, NY, April 13th. Dinner will be served at 6pm and the show starts at 9pm, Rich Shultz is the opening band Saturday night. Admission is $10/$12 and you can purchase tickets online Here.

  • Marco Benevento at the BSP Lounge in Kingston, March 30th

    To close out March, the BSP Lounge had a fantastic night of music filled with creativity and improvisation and Marco Benevento.

    The night started with Home Body, the wonderful music of Eric Hnatow and Haley Morgan. Their sound was just as unique as their look.  Eric has a way of looping his keys around Haley’s soaring vocals that fuse the two together into one beautiful wall of sound.  With dance moves that go along with the beat of their songs, Home Body is very entertaining.  Another interesting part of their show is that they have lights arranged around them that meld perfectly with their music.  It is one of the best do-it-yourself lightshows I have ever seen.  Home Body is not to be missed when they come to your area if you are looking for interesting, creative, and experimental music to dance to.

    Marco Benevento came to the stage next and slayed the crowd from the get-go with “Fireworks” that got the room moving immediately.  There is a freedom to how Marco moves up and down the keys that forces the audience to guess what is coming next.  He has become very comfortable leading the band into anything from his repertoire.  The recent addition of vocals has added another layer to his music adding a beautiful new instrument to the mix for him to play with.  The vocals are often manipulated by one of Marco’s toys on top of his piano and this makes it seem as if there is a hidden robot on stage that knows how to sing.  This is just the beginning of a new way for Marco to experiment on stage in broadening his sound.

    The talented Dave Dreiwitz on bass and Andy Borger on drums backed him throughout the evening and made it feel like a nonstop jam.  Since the release of Tigerface, these three have been touring hard and the way they play off one another shows how confident this band is right now.  All three are masters of their instruments and any song is possible for them, as was highlighted by the teases of The Bangles’ “Walk Like an Egyptian” and LCD Soundsystem’s “Someone Great,” both of which occurred as tangents in the middle of original music. The night also saw the debut of new music that the three of them have been collaborating on and the direction that Marco’s music is going is great.

    Though the crowd was not large, they were more than ready to show as much love as they could for what was happening on stage.  They helped count off the beginning to “The Real Morning Party” and danced and shouted throughout the songs as though nothing else in the world mattered.  The great “Limbs of a Pine” followed soon after and the jamming went wild as the tiger head Marco has on his piano was passed around for each musician to wear as they got their individual moment to shine.  This is a trio not to miss as they are the top of their game and constantly looking to improve by trying out new ideas.  They push one another to new musical heights that seem to have no limit.  Marco Benevento can be seen at the Brooklyn Bowl on April 20th.

    OCMSNorth East natives Old Crow Medicine Show (O.C.M.S) will be playing the Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, Sunday, May 26. Brought to you by Dan Smalls Presents, this bluegrass/American roots experience can not be missed!

    With fifteen years of touring, 800,000 albums sold and appearances throughout the year at the Grand Ole Opry, O.C.M.S is certainly in good company with bluegrass all stars like Doc Watson, Del McCoury and countless others whom have graced the stage of the Nashville landmark.

    Old Crow Medicine Show has been on the radar of bluegrass heads for years now, legend says they were discovered while playing on a street corner in North Carolina where bluegrass grandfather Doc Watson just happened to walk by one afternoon. They were immediately invited to Watson’s MerleFest which led to a residency at the Grand Ole Opry, which led to appearances at renowned festivals like Bonnaroo, Coachella, and now they will be making history headlining the 6th annual DelFest.

  • Marco Benevento coming to the BSP Lounge in Kingston, March 30th

    The BSP Lounge in Kingston has been stepping up their talent booking as of late and on March 30th they bring a New York favorite to its stage, Marco Benevento. For those that have seen him before you know what to expect, but if you haven’t seen him before be prepared to be amazed.  Known for his exploratory jamming and expertise on the piano, Marco is sure to leave you in awe.  His latest album, Tigerface, has been getting rave reviews by many critics as has this tour in support.  He has continuously grown as an artist over the years, adding in new elements to his shows and this tour is no different.  This time, it isn’t new gadgets on top of his piano, but words to his songs.  He has decided to open up his voice to expand his sound farther than he ever has before.  This is one of his last scheduled dates in the area, happening after the snoe.down kick off on March 21st and before his April 20th show at the Brooklyn Bowl.  Catch him while you can in these intimate settings and be prepared to get down and dance.  Get tickets now at Eventbee or at The BSP Lounge box office.

  • Kung Fu, McLovins, Steve Broderick, and MazMyth at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, March 15

    On March 15th, The Chance was filled with funk all night long for a great night of music, with Kung Fu, McLovins, Steve Broderick and MazMyth. To start the night, Jordan Dummond of MazMyth stated that he would be playing solo material because the rest of the band was unable to perform.  He had some help from a guitarist and drummer, which added some extra texture to his looping baselines and overall Claypool-esque sound.  With some spacey jamming involved, Jordan’s material would be perfect for a late night spot at a fest for those looking to dance and groove into the wee hours of the morning.  Up next were Steve Broderick and his band.  While their set started out with songs reminiscent of The Band, they quickly changed into a full on funk/rock fusion that sounded like it could have come out of a club in the mid-70s.  Their cover of “Miss You” by The Rolling Stones had some edge to it that The Stones never put on it and it was welcomed by the crowd.  Although they only had a half hour to play, they made the most of it, wasting no time between songs and won over fans by the end of their set.

    McLovins were next and showed why they are on the rise in the community.  With fast beats and catchy choruses, along with quality jamming, they really know how to put on a show.  The McLovins not only can jam, but they like to show it off too, and it’s not a bad thing.  They can go from indie rock to 70s Grateful Dead in a matter of moments.  Ending their set with a funk laced “2001”, much to the crowd’s delight, they went out on a high note and got the crowd ready for what Kung Fu was about to throw down.

    Kung Fu came out of the gates hard and got the crowd, which had been only lively at times, up and dancing immediately.  Rob Somerville’s saxophone playing was a great partner to Tim Palmieri’s guitar playing.  Both of them used each other to push themselves and the music constantly forward.  Rob and Tim took turns taking the lead the whole night and then supporting the other.  Todd Stoops has a way of playing the keys that I have never seen.  He slaps away at them like a bass player would slap his bass.  It was an interesting way of playing and very fun to watch.  The sounds that came out of his keys were some of the funkiest sounds that I’ve ever heard.  The three of them made sure to not step on one another’s space during the evening, giving each ample time to shine and wow the crowd with their beautiful play of their respective instruments.

    By the third song Chris Deangelis and Adrian Tramontano were locked in with one another playing the bass and drums respectively.  These two laid down the foundation over which the others improvised.  They pushed the music without letting up for a moment throughout the show.  Chris dug deep a few times to really get the funk moving, pushing the whole band to meet up with him.  Adrian finally got time to shine with a drum solo and it made the crowd stop dancing and just watch as he demolished his set.  The whole band was having fun on stage and was obvious in the music.  The addition of having the sax in the band was something that should be seen more in music.  It added that extra layer to their music, making them stand out from other bands.  These guys are a must see when they come to a town near you.  Make sure you don’t forget to put your dancing shoes on before leaving your house.

  • Formula 5 and The Assortment of Crayons at Oasis Cafe in New Paltz

    A cold wet day in New York didn’t keep the people of New Paltz from coming to check out a great night of live music at the Oasis Cafe, located on Main Street in town. It’s an easy venue to get to from the Thruway, with friendly staff and the place to go for those who like intimate shows with the bands who are playing.

    oasis cafeThe night started out with The Assortment of Crayons, hometown favorites from New Paltz and the crowd really showed up in force for their hour long set. Their funk came out immediately in full force and elicited a feel for Shakedown-era Dead. Matt Richards’ keys kept the music moving along nicely bringing it back and forth between funk and space. Erik and Sean Hill not only play guitar and bass, but also switched during the set, each holding their own on either instrument and Batu Attila’s drumming kept a steady groove for the others to layer over. A great opening set that had two covers, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” and “Crazy”, with help from some lovely female vocals and great segues between songs and a tease of “2001”.

    Albany’s own Formula 5 came on next and slayed the crowd. Their two hour set had no lulls, keeping the energy high at all times. The crowd, although it had become a little thin near the 2:30 A.M. end, danced all night long. They opened with “Perch” and came firing on all cylinders, with great jamming where no member stepped on another’s notes and let each person shine for a bit. Then “Epiphany” hit and the funk oozed throughout Oasis. The dance party really got going here and never let up for a moment. This one had a great Dead vibe to it and it segued into “Uh-Oh”, which led to a noticeable Phish vibe. Joe Davis was hitting beautiful bright and lively chords, Bill Shattuck kept a mean rhythm going with Greg Marek, and Mike McDonald played the keys to match what Joe was doing. This is a band that knows how to jam.

    oasis cafeThe night continued and soon the night seemed like one long jam. Around 1:50 A.M., Joe mentioned Phish had announced their tour dates and maybe a little celebration should go down. With that, the band started up Phish’s “Ghost”. Formula 5’s take on the Phish classic was fantastic, funky, dirty and a little bit of rock thrown in. They did the song justice and followed it up with moe.’s “Happy Hour Hero”. These covers back to back showed who they are influenced by, but also how great their musicianship is to give both songs their due. They ended with a bluegrass tune “Catch Me” and followed it up with the space funk of “Houdini” to end the night. Both of these songs showed how diverse this band can be at any given moment. If you have a chance, make sure you see these guys when they come to your town.

  • Kung Fu head to The Chance in Poughkeepsie on March 15th

    Coming to The Chance on March 15 is a great lineup of music for those who like to keep dancing all night long. Kung Fu, coming off an impressive winter tour that saw high praise from many people, lead the way with their unique style of funk.

    They are no stranger to The North East and those who come should be looking forward to their long jams that are going to make you want to keep moving all night once they hit the stage. Opening for them are The McLovins, another band who is no stranger to the North East. Be ready to watch all of their impressive segues that will keep you guessing what is coming up next. Supporting both bands are MAZMYTH and Steve Broderick.

  • The Big Up 2013 – August 8th-10th at a new home in Claverack, NY

    There was an immense amount of disappointment voiced when Shireworks Productions announced the one year hiatus of The Big Up festival in 2012. The mass letdown only fueled the excitement when they announced that they would be back Summer 2013. This year, however, the festival will be held in Claverack, NY which is just a quick 45 minutes from Albany.

    The time has come to start planning your summer festival schedule and it seems like The Big Up is at the top of many festie-goers list this year. The dates are Thursday August 8th – Saturday August 10th

    “Wow!   • Dopapod and Schleigho announced as headliners for The Spring Revival

    Dopapod and Schleigho are your Friday and Saturday night headliners for The Spring Revival, a brand new live music with camping event May 9th – 12th at The Hideaway in Lyons, NY

    Taking the main stage Friday night will be the return of Schleigho, one of the northeast’s top touring bands of the late 1990’s / early 2000’s festival scene. Described best as “Music for the Minded”, Schleigho’s legendary jazz/fusion will no doubt educate a new generation of jam-prog fans, while reviving fond memories for the scene’s older generation.
