  • Rochester Lilac Festival May 10-19, 2013

    The 1,200 lilac bushes decorating the 22 acres of Highland Park Rochester Lilac Festival
    will put on a spectacular show May 10-19, 2013, exploding with color and fragrance during the Rochester Lilac Festival — showcasing the world’s largest collection of lilacs during the largest and oldest festival of its kind.

    The 105-year-old festival this year has a new name, adding the word Rochester to the title, plus a new logo, new events and attractions, high-profile national music acts,  and a new producer, The Springut Group.

    What’s new and notable for the Lilac Fest in 2013?

    Wine & Chocolate Tasting: 

    Three evenings of a Wine & Chocolate Tasting under the big tent, where you can sample more
    than 150 different local, regional, and national wines from more than 30 wineries — from 4
    to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 14; Wednesday, May 15; and Thursday, May 16.

    Craft Beer Garden: 

    A Craft Beer Garden will offer more than 20 varieties of eclectic regional and national beers on
    tap on a rotating schedule of five different beers per day, for sale alongside a variety of beers
    from Genesee Brewery. The featured breweries are Ithaca, Victory, Long Trail, and Pyramid.

    Kid Power!

    Each year a portion of the park is transformed into a mini amusement park during the Lilac
    Festival. And this year the children’s rides and entertainment will feature new mini rides and
    several bounce houses and inflatable obstacle courses. The kids’ stage will offer a variety of acts
    and is being relocated closer to the rides, in an area now being called “Kid Power!”

    Demonstration Stages: 

    Along the paths, a variety of demonstrations will be taking place, from gardening tips to
    woodworking.

    Lilac 10K and Family 5K: 

    This annual event, sponsored by MedVed, is a picturesque run through city streets on the final
    day of the festival, Sunday May 19. New high-tech additions help runners track their midway
    and final times, while automatically sending texts to family and friends.

    Art In the Park: 

    More than 130 artists will be exhibiting on the South Avenue Green in this year’s juried Arts
    and Crafts Shows, open 10:30 a.m. to 6 pm. Saturdays and 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Artists
    from more than 10 different states are participating, with art ranging from ceramics and glass to
    jewelry and metal/sculpture.

  • Phish Blossom Music Center 95 show now available on LivePhish

    Phish released another live gem from the good ol’days of 1995 6/20/95 Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls, OH; from which a few other shows from the same tour have previously been available (Lincoln NE, Orlando FL, Hershey PA) now the pick of the litter is available exclusively at Livephish.

    1995 was the peak of everything the band had done up to that point in their career.   • Family-friendly DelFest is Full of Tradition

    With the official start to summer vacation only a month away, DelFest veterans and newcomers alike are eagerly awaiting the Memorial Day Weekend and the 6th Annual DelFest in Cumberland, MD taking place May 23-26 2013. This festival has rightfully been tagged the family-friendly festival of the season by those who have attended in previous years because, DelFest doesn’t just offer family camping areas, they offer a complete family vacation experience where children are encouraged to join their music lovin parents for a weekend of arts & crafts, jambands and bluegrass.

    delfestFrom its inception DelFest has set out to be a festival of traditions, music tradition gathered with family traditions of camping and sing-alongs around the campfire, with Bluegrass being the traditional music of America, a festival that offers both is a magical wonderland in my book. Del McCoury has been an American bluegrass legend since his days with Bill Monroe but, he has also been embraced by the jamband scene, where he has shared the stage with Phish, Keller Williams, Yonder Mountain String Band and many more staples in the jam music scene. Bringing the two music scenes together at one festival has promised to produce one of the most popular festivals of the Summer of 2013.

    delfest familyBefore the music even starts at DelFest, festival goers who are also musicians are encouraged to attend the DelFest Music Academy, where the teachers are The Travelin’ McCourys and The Rambling Rooks. It takes place between May 20-23rd, the three days preceding the music festival. The cost of the academy includes a 4-day festival pass and camping. This year’s lineup includes the festival’s namesake and headliner legendary Del McCoury, Trey Anastasio Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Yonder Mountain String Band, Trampled By Turtles, Leftover Salmon, an All Star set dubbed the Masters of Bluegrass pairing Del with other luminaries Bobby Osborne, J.D. Crowe, Bobby Hicks, and Jerry McCoury. With an intimate indoor area at the DelFest Music Hall, these crazy nights are fueled by 2 bands whom also have main stage appearances during the weekend. Late Night performances begin after music has ended on the Grandstand Stage. Doors open at Midnight and specific set times are TBA.  Admission is $20/show.     In addition to all this amazing music tradition, DelFest is family-friendly, other festivals include kids in some fashion these days and family camping sections have always been created but what DelFest does differently is they completely include children in every aspect of the festival. Yes there is a family camping section and it is actually quiet at night and brewing with energy in the early morning but that’s how us festie parents like it. Kids make-up a large portion of the students who attend the DelFest Music Academy, there are organized arts & crafts projects like tie-dying, an art bus from the local community is parked in the family camping area all weekend too!

    I attended the festival for my first time last year and there were kids and families everywhere enjoying a swim in the Potomac River to relaxing in hammocks side-by-side. Even the late night shows have taken into consideration that children are there and sleeping and because late nights are held inside the little ones can sleep while the party people are hootin’ and hollerin. It’s also common to see many campfire jams into the wee hours of the night which lends to the feeling of tradition and family that fills the air at DelFest.

    I’ve seen a lot of music and I’ve taken the kids and not taken the kids and this year I will be attending the festival with my 7 yr. old daughter with me because I missed her so much last year with all the other kids around. Well that and because she’s also a bluegrass and jamband fan like her Mama.

    DelFest is just a month away and already tickets for 4-day passes have sold out at every price, the RV and VIP passes have been sold out for some time now.   • Mike Gordon’s ‘The Egg’ Live From Albany. Now Available

    After becoming a phan-favorite in a short amount of time, the intimate show with Mike Gordon and his band at The Egg in Albany will be released as a 3-CD set and a free MP3 download; Simply titled The Egg.  The December 2011 show produced remarkable acoustics in which the entire band drew energy that night so it’s no surprise this show was picked by Gordon for release.

    You can get the free MP3 download at LivePhish.com. The 3-CD set is available as a very limited physical run, with deluxe packaging that includes a custom round tin with three discs tucked away inside a custom Egg cotton stash bag. It is available for pre-order now exclusively at Phish Dry Goods and Mike’s online store and available for shipping by April 30th 2013. It will not be available in stores.

    The show features originals from Mike’s catalog, including “Horizon Line”, “Only A Dream”, “Voices”, and “Hap Nappy”. Phish fans will recognize “Sugar Shack” and “Suzy Greenberg”, which included The Dude Of Life on vocals.   • Bob Dylan’s ‘AmericanaramA’ Tickets on Sale April 30th for Upstate NY

    Bob Dylan recently announced he will be joined by My Morning Jacket, WILCO, Ryan Bingham and more, for the Bob Dylan_AmerricanaramaAmericanaramA tour this Summer. Presale tickets went on sale for select shows this morning through Dylan’s website, where the initial announcement was made. Details are few but we do know Upstate NY will host this event at both Darien Lake Performing Arts Center and Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) this July.

    AmericanaramA will be at Darien Lake on July 18th. Presale tickets go on sale through Dylan’s website April 30th at 10am and regular on sale is May 4th at 10am. July 21st is the SPAC  show.   • Greensky Bluegrass Will Play the Westcott Theater April 24th

    Greensky Bluegrass will play the Westcott Theatre, with their own brand of Newgrass band that has helped to re-invent this newer genre reminiscent of the old-timey bluegrass of Bill Monroe, but with a fresh jammy sound.

    The band has recently announced performances at Delfest, Telluride Bluegrass and Northwest String Summit and several more. They are also offering fans 5 of the 10 songs on their new album ‘Handguns’; Stream it for Free below or available on the Greensky Bluegrass website for anyone who wants to listen.

    As their name might suggest, Greensky Bluegrass utilizes traditional bluegrass instruments – dobro, banjo, guitar, upright bass and mandolin. However, the music that they make is anything but reversionary and the new album, Handguns is a brave expression of what separates their original music from the rest of the bluegrass genre.

    Greensky has continued to gain national momentum since they won the Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s coveted Band Competition in 2006 and have sold-out dates across the country as well as played at Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, NPR’s Mountain Stage and many more. As these diverse festivals would suggest, they’re a bluegrass band but they’re not. Bluegrass doesn’t have distortion, or horns for that matter. Greensky does.

    Greensky Bluegrass will play April 24th at the Westcott Theater in Syracuse, NY. Admission is $15 advance/$18 at the door. This is an all ages show, with 2 full sets by Greensky. Show starts at 7:00pm and you can get your tickets online or at the venue.

  • Cabinet Brings Bluegrass to Upstate NY April 19th & 20th

    There just isn’t enough Bluegrass music here in Upstate NY. We do get a semi-acceptable amount of amazing bluegrass bands and small festivals in this area but acceptable amount to me would be relative to living in Nashville, TN.

    Nestled somewhere in between Bill Monroe and John Hartford you will find Cabinet. A simple little name for a six-piece string band with deep roots in the old timey bluegrass tradition of story telling from our ancestors of the Appalachian Mountains.

    Their lyrics tell stories of family, love, and life; but most of all Cabinet has that gift of putting last night’s shenanigans and the morning afters repercussions into a neat little four minute package of an old timey moral lesson.

    “When we get drunk on wine and shine, we talk about the past and better times, I got drunk on wine and moonshine … Saturday night brings Sunday morn.”

    Tonight all my boot stompin, skirt twirrlin, bluegrass needs will be met and most likely surpassed. Cabinet is playing at Sticky Lips Juke Joint in Rochester, NY. The opening band will be the Ruckus Juice Jug Stompers.     The band is also playing at St Lawrence University’s Springfest on the Java Stage in Canton, NY the following night. Cabinet goes on at 4:00 pm and then heads to the Waterhole in Saranac Lake, NY. Admission is $10, ages 21+. Doors are at 9:00pm with opening band The Blind Owl Band. The show starts at 10:00pm.

    With the release of their most recent album Leap, Cabinet has toured most of the United States this past year. Things certainly continue to grow for these hard working musicians, this year will also be their inaugural Old Farmers Ball music festival being held Saturday May 11th featuring, Cabinet, Yarn, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Miz,  And The Moneynotes, Pappy, Kyle Morgan and also the Coal Town Rounders. A limited amount of tickets are still available through Live Nation.

    Hope ya’all come out for this band this weekend, you will not be disappointed, in fact you will probably end sore the next day from all the dancing you will do at the show.

  • Furthur Announces Summer/Fall Tour 2013

    furthur_summer2013.jpgJust when we were beginning to think that All Good was actually going to be their only summer 2013 appearance, Furthur announced their East Coast heavy summer 2013 tour dates today! Looks like All Good is now just a midway point on a long strange trip between East and West coasts for this psychedelic troop.

    The Band will come through Upstate NY twice this summer, while also playing other popular North East venues like, home to the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, Barclays Center; and first time appearances at New Hampshire’s Meadow Brook. This tour will also be the first time the band has done a 4-day run, September 19-22, at Red Rocks!

    Personally I had my doubts too. Heads from Rochester to Toronto were legitimately almost convinced we wouldn’t see any Furthur. If we weren’t going to the Port Chester sold out shows or All Good, then we just might have our first summer in years without the sweet sounds to fill the air.

    Furthur is playing the Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, NY on July 14th. Mail order tickets will go on sale April 16th online Here. Internet Pre-Sales  are during April 16-18th, and regular on sale April 19th. They will return to CMAC in Canadaigua, NY on July 19th.   • Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition’ poster show to be held during Phish’s three-night run at SPAC

    Summer in Saratoga will take place at The Saratoga Hilton on July 5, 6 & 7 th. Admission is Free and open to all ages. The exhibit will run all three dates from 10am-3pm. The poster show will feature the best Phish inspired art, including limited edition art made specifically for the show.

    The poster show featuring Phish artists from around the country was developed and produced by a group of artists and fans, this poster show will be held in the middle of a weekend of Phish.

    Phish poster shows have been held over the years with great success, as unique posters made for the Phish shows that weekend and stop on the tour feature some of the best concert art being produced today. ‘Summer in Saratoga’ is the second event produced by The Mothership Art Collective, a group within the Phish community, comprised of artists and organizations who promote the art inspired by the band Phish. Their initial poster show, ‘First Tube’, was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey on June 16th, 2012 and was a success for all who participated in the event and raised $2000 to benefit The Mockingbird Foundation. The eclectic artists featured at this poster show displays the broad scope of Phish related art and capture the inspiration of the band in their art. The creative fan base that Phish has makes for amazing art inspired by the band, the locales and the music. The collective works hard to bring an art show to the Phish touring public each year.

    In keeping with the great tradition and success of past poster shows, Summer in Saratoga will offer free entry to all patrons, tubes available for purchase, charitable donations from the event made to The Mockingbird Foundation and a wide array of artists with posters to fit any budget. Artists will be announced in early May, as well as any special edition works that will only be available at the show.

    The Saratoga Hilton is located in downtown Saratoga Springs, only 3 miles from Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC).

  • The Big Takeover this weekend in Poughkeepsie & Hudson

    The Big Takeover is a unique concoction of backgrounds and spirits that perfectly creates a version of reggae that is fresh and vivid. With Jamaican born and raised NeeNee Rushie as a captivating and memorable front woman, this movement complete with a playful horn section, pulsating bass and drums, and a hypnotizing rhythm section fills its audience’s hearts with good vibes and solid joy.

    The Big Takeover is making a return to Ciboney Cafe in Poughkeepsie, NY, April 12th. The show starts at 8pm and goes till 11pm. A dinner menu is available between 5pm-10pm and a Happy Hour from 6pm-8pm. Tickets can be purchased at the venue.

    The band then moves onto a show at Club Helsinki in Hudson, NY, April 13th. Dinner will be served at 6pm and the show starts at 9pm, Rich Shultz is the opening band Saturday night. Admission is $10/$12 and you can purchase tickets online Here.
