  • Keller Williams Plays to an Intimate Crowd in Rochester

NYS Music was lucky enough to capture two Keller Williams shows in Upstate NY, a solo performance at German House in Rochester on September 12th and at Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs, NY on October 10th with special guests, New York’s very own Floodwood sharing the bill.

keller williams rochesterKeller Williams is truly a Renaissance Man of the music world. With an album repertoire including, to name a few –  a Children’s album, a piano infused Grateful Dead covers album (Keys) and a bluegrass treat with the Travelin’ McCourys (Pick) – all in addition to his noteworthy one-man-show events, set Keller far apart from the Jamband pack.

Currently on tour across the East and West Coasts, Keller can be seen on any given night of the week as either his solo performance or accompanied by one of several bands like –  Floodwood, The Travelin’ McCourys or More Than A Little.

The German House performance played to an intimate local crowd with energy that filled the air while permeating the dance floor with a flood of dancing shoes.

keller williams rochesterArriving onstage barefoot in rolled-up khakis and strapped with a guitar, Keller beat on the strings of his guitar to a wordless jam with increasing intensity of sound. Whilst twirling around the stage in circles with silly faces and comical interactions with the crowd, Keller’s inner presence beamed from his gestures – it was clear the crowd was in for a fantastic evening.

This particular night Keller was consistently impressing fans with sampling several different instruments at once and dancing around while creating music, amazing music! Many were in awe of how seamlessly he was not just making music, but he was the music, it was all-encompassing and a delight to be a part of.

    SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

Keller’s version of Ani DiFranco’s “Freak Show” was an excellent first for me – Keller giving credit to the creators of the song he was making his own, saying – “bass line by the GD words by Ani Difranco”. Freaker by the speaker created a funky psychedelic jam that blew the roof of the house that night.

During a drum beat infused Franklin’s Tower the crowd erupted into a sing along where Keller Williams improvised lyrics to say, “If you get confused listen to the fake trumpet play” – as he created trumpet sounds from an iPad on a stand. It seemed to be a spiritual moment in the German house where,  we as a music community in Rochester, NY, once  celebrated the life of a fallen brother, Scott Schojan – the words “may the four winds blow you safely home again” sends a warmth thru my body knowing at that moment, Scotty was in the room with us.

  • Avett Brothers Energized Fans at CMAC on July 26th

The Avett Brothers brought their unique punk-rock, rockabilly, rock ‘n’ roll style of bluegrassy music to CMAC on July 26th – to a crowd that was pumped to experience the energy that this band brings to the stage, each and every time, increasing their antics to new levels without pause or hesitation.

Opening with “Live and Die” – the bar was set high for the night, the crowd roared and cheered to this upbeat song about finding love to make it through a conflict. Seeing this band live is an interaction between artist and fans using the universal language of music, portraying emotions we can all relate to in one way or another, and this is why their fans adore them so.

This is not a band that stands in one spot jamming out on their guitar; no no, The Avetts live and breathe the music they create, they leap around the stage with their instruments without missing a note, they jump on top of the piano and speakers, with the enthusiasm of a child; it is nothing short of a spiritual experience to see this band live.

During a high energy “Kick Drum Heart” Seth leaped into the crowd and body surfed deep into the crowd. Fans went wild with excitement at the opportunity to be a part of Seth’s well-known rock-star behavior. Singalongs with the entire crowd on nearly every song fueled this fire as well. There was no time to sit down! Hell, there wasn’t even a setbreak. The band played their heats out and the crowd ate it up like musical dessert.

Bringing the show full circle from hard-hitting ballads to down right drinking songs – the night ended with this gal’s all time favorite, “I And Love And You” the outpouring of emotion seen on Scott’s face was epic. With one finger pointed straight into the air the crowd and band together belted out: “Three words that became hard to say, I and love and you”. One couldn’t have asked for a more intense show if they dreamt it. The Avett Brothers came to rage! – game, set, match.

The Avett Brothers July 26, 2013 CMAC in Canandaguia

Set 1: Live and Die, Got To Sleep, The Fall, Slight Figure, 74, At The Beach, Head Full Of Doubts, Melody Anne, Winter In My Heart, Just A Closer, No Place To Fall, Paranoia, Kick Drum, Geraldine, Feb 7, Laundry Room, Old ??, Gimme a Kiss, Indolence, Life.

  • Cabinet Plays the Cyber Cafe in Binghamton on August 30th

Cabinet will play Upstate NY in Binghamton on Friday August 30th at the Cyber Cafe. The show starts at 9:00PM and you can purchase tickets at the venue box office.

When it comes to the music of Cabinet, the essential bywords are soul, simplicity, and serious musicianship. In concert, the combination of these qualities invariably yields an experience that is so celebratory and moving that the very word Cabinet takes on a new, vivid meaning for anyone in the audience. An inclusive and engaging energy is the uniting through-line as Cabinet weaves bluegrass, country and folk influences to powerful effect.

The band is – Pappy Biondo [banjo, vocals], J.P. Biondo [mandolin, vocals], Mickey Coviello [acoustic guitar, vocals], Dylan Skursky [electric bass, double bass], Todd Kopec [fiddle, vocals], and Jami Novak [drums, percussion], all love and live music. They each have a nuanced approach and posses broad talents in their own rights. But the passionate, affirming, and joyous musical world that they create together is Cabinet.

This is a band that wants to play music, that loves to play music. You can hear in each song a bridled optimism, like they are just waiting to take you on an extended journey across the countryside. It is this tension, perfectly crafted with each player trading licks, that holds the listener in rapt attention.

  • The Westcott Theater Promoters ‘Upstate Shows’ Take Over Booking for Lost Horizon

Syracuse’s Lost Horizon has undergone some recent changes and fans can expect to see a lot more music there in coming months. Starting in September Upstate Shows – the promoters for The Westcott Theater, will take the helm at The Lost Horizon. The venue, located just off Erie Blvd. will expand its already popular hard-core metal lineup with new promoters.

Eric Binion and Dan Mastronardi, are the owners of Upstate Shows and currently book shows exclusively at The Westcott, the F Shed and the occasional show at The Landmark in Syracuse, NY. The duo will be looking to expand the current calendar of metal and punk-rock shows at this smaller venue.

With their success at the revitalization of The Westcott Theater – now one of Syracuse’s premier music venues, the team hopes to do the same for this historical gem. Lost Horizon has, for some time now, been considered the main venue for heavy metal, rock and punk-rock type shows; the new promoters told Syracuse.com that they look forward to booking their more intimate shows at the Lost.

Fans of the current style of music coming to the venue need not worry, Upstate Shows plans to add to the calendar by bringing in a wider scope of musical taste. With its history in the city that dates back to the 1970’s – fans can now see local bands like Dark Hollow and local favorites like Driftwood in a more intimate setting than larger venues in Syracuse.

We are always happy to learn about new places to see good music and our entire Syracuse Staff looks forward to covering more shows at this venue in. Shows are already being announced for the Lost, look for regional acts like Aqueous on October 23rd, the full schedule can be found at www.thelosthorizon.com.
